Guest Reviews
- Markus (6/5): - For the price of a five-star resort, the experience delivered little more than three-star comfort. The property’s setting is undeniably scenic—nestled amid Newport’s storied outskirts and within easy reach of the grand mansions—but beauty alone cannot disguise the shortcomings within.
At $500 per night, expectations naturally rise; yet the reality was underwhelming. The room felt dated, the bed lacked comfort, and the bathroom offered only the most basic amenities. Everything was clean, certainly, but devoid of the charm or coziness that might redeem its simplicity.
Even at half the rate, the experience would have been disappointing. At full price, it was verging on absurd. In short, this is a property whose setting promises far more than its execution delivers.
- Charles (6/5): - Rooms all on 2nd floor - no elevator. Property under construction. Bar and restaurant closed when we stayed.
- John (10/5): Great getaway. - The parking is plentiful and close.
- David (10/5): - Ocean view, rooms
- Gail (10/5): - This is a beautiful property! We loved staying here. The staff was exceptionally helpful in giving us information about the area since it was our first visit to Newport.
- Katherine (10/5): - Such a beautiful property and the Staff were very friendly and helpful.
- Jorge (10/5): - Absolutely beautiful accommodations on a very unique property. The service was excellent from check-in at the bar and beyond.
- Iveta (4/5): - Wedding party was from 5:30 to 8:30 pm but the loud noises and music continued until after
11:00 pm. No response from staff or management. Had to resort to calling the police.
- Eric (10/5): - Beautiful views of the harbor from the property.
- Dave (10/5): - Quality customer care all around and Amazing views.
- Rosella (6/5): - OceanCliff is a beautiful property with stunning views of the Newport Bridge—that’s the highlight. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience fell short. Our Queen room was very basic, reminiscent of a college dorm, and located directly above the kitchen. By 7 AM, loud music coming from the kitchen made it impossible to sleep in.
We also had a poor experience at the on-site restaurant. After a polite greeting, the hostess Rae seemed annoyed with us for no reason. Though we asked to sit outside on a beautiful, empty evening at 5 PM, we were told the tables were reserved. Eventually, we were moved outside, but when we left around 6:30, the outdoor tables were still unoccupied—clearly, they were never actually reserved.
To top it off, one of us got food poisoning. And at checkout, no one even asked how our stay was—which is usually standard. It just reinforced the feeling that OceanCliff doesn’t care about guest experience.
Between the rude service, early morning noise, and questionable food, we won’t be returning. A pretty view isn’t enough to make up for poor hospitality.
- paulune (6/5): - It was very disappointing the first night there was a wedding and it was so loud and filled with people who had too much to drink, we couldnt sleep. The next night it was too quiet the bar and the restaurant was closed. Staff never said hello or good evening.
- Michelle (10/5): - A stay at Oceancliff is amazing. We attended a wedding this past week & it was beautiful.staff is terrific as are the views.location is perfect- 10 minutes from downtown Newport .
- laurie (10/5): - Great
- Brian (8/5): - It’s a historic hotel, so it does not feel like a new or updated hotel, which is not a bad thing! Very clean and has a beautiful view. Bed was comfortable. There is only 21 rooms or so, so it is very quiet but the walls are thin - easy to hear people in the hallway. The restaurant was closed while we were there (which is odd since we were there on season). About a 10 - 15 minute drive to downtown Newport.
- Kasandra (6/5): - The view
- Leanna (10/5): - Stunning property
- Heather (6/5): - Hotel is adorable. Gorgeous views from back terrace. Staff are lovely.
Giant air conditioning units on roof right outside our window. Like listening to an engine all night.
- claudine (10/5): - I have always wanted to stay at this location . The hotel it self is beautiful. The room was not so much.
- Kenneth (6/5): - The only staff we had contact with was the front desk. They were cordial. No staff available in the breakfast area -toaster was not plugged in so it wasn’t working. Refrigerator in room cycled on and off and the bed was creaky.
- Caryn (10/5): - Beautiful Scenery!! Wonderful Staff! We Will Be Back!!
- marilyn (10/5): - Beautiful both inside and outside
Gracious staff
- Alexa (2/5): - Hotel is very dated and not well maintained.
Room was clean but carpets were old and dingy
The hotel was so so so so loud. Our room was apparently above the kitchen where there started yelling, playing music and banging pots and pans at 8:00am. You could hear clearly loud announcements like “one order of calamari”. We called the front desk to ask about the noise and the gentleman we spoke with made it seem like it was no big deal and the only solution offered was to move to different room which was apparently more noisy? So that was confusing. The doors had visible gaps along the top and sides and you can hear everything happening in the hotel and through the windows. To cap it off there were wedding two nights we were there, due to the age and lack of noise insulation the hotel really needs to let guests know when they are booking that they should expect noise until 12. We wanted a nice relaxing beach hotel and this was sadly not that. There was one really nice and helpful lady at the front desk.
- Ruth (4/5): - Loved the old orginal building. Our room was large in a quite side of the building.
The room phone didn't work, had the maintenance person check it, but it wasn't changed out with a working phone. Each time we used our cell phone and left messages at the front desk for help, the staff never received the messages. There was no maid service to replenish supplies.
- Verified traveler (10/5): It's like staying in a castle. - The facility is beautiful with a view of the water. The staff was friendly and everything was clean. There was no elevator but staff is willing to help with bags if you need it. I really enjoyed the facility and the area.
- Alexis (4/5): - The room was extremely outdated, no thermostat to control temp (it was freezing from the AC), uncomfortable bed and pillows, and the sink water never ran warm/hot! They only had a continental breakfast available with no options for hot breakfast food. For the amount this was nightly, it was far below expectations especially for a 4 star hotel. Views were the only good thing.
- Wei-Guang (10/5): - the view is very scenic
- Portia (8/5): - Lovely location, relaxing, beautiful sunsets! Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- martine (6/5): - While the property was beautiful and the room was clean and comfy, we were really disappointed with our stay. There was a wedding that evening and our room was right above the venue so it was loud (sounded like we were in a karaoke bar) until very late and then everyone was hanging out partying right outside the bedroom windows. We hardly slept and wished this could have been a room reserved for wedding attendees and we could have been somewhere far away. Definitely not upset with the wedding party, but the hotel shouldn't have put us there.
- Maria (10/5): - If you love and appreciate history, you’ll enjoy this property.
The main house, setting and views, in particular, are spectacular. It’s mainly used for wedding and group events and we could see why - the views from the main dining room are “Wow”.
It’s doesn’t have an elevator which wasn’t a problem for us. Some of the later additions could have been more sensitive to the original house in terms of finishes and HVAC placement, but maybe that’s what was available at the time. Some updates could really make the building sing again.
Our room was spotless. We thought it was very good value.
All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.
We would definitely visit again.
- ROBIN (10/5): - Beautifu!!!
- Khaled (6/5): - Hotel is historic and really charming... However, there are many areas of improvements to be considered:
1. There is no in-room control for heating/cooling as it is controlled centrally.
2. No extra blankets provided in the closets
3. Breakfast is waaaaay lower than our expectations for such a nice hotel building: Not manned (nobody to help), no sliced bread provided (only bagels), no hot items (no scrambled eggs, no pancakes, no waffles or sausages), no hot milk for those preferring cereals that way, no honey as sweetner option, only one type of fruit provided (cut pineapples).
4. If there is a wedding on the night you're staying, don't expect to be able to sleep before midnight, as the noise and DJ banging is audible and you could hear (and feel) in your bed!!
Briefly, great building and nice staff... everything else is disappointing. Note to management: You can make this place a heavenly hotel if you do a little bit more in the areas I highlighted. Thank you
- Tara (10/5): - The grounds, and the area on the water, are so beautiful. We had a great deal for a big old handsome room. We did have the compressors outside our window and there were tents and music as they set up for a wedding, but I enjoyed the old fireplaces and wide stairs and feel of the old building. And the bed was very comfy.
- William (10/5): Wow! - Our first time here and they extended the hospitality of Rhode Island. There was a wedding photo opp. that day and we saw the lovely couple posing for their once in a lifetime pictures from our room. What a privilege to be able to see them.. God Bless them....
- David (10/5): - Beautiful property with great view!
- Mary (10/5): - I like the decor , the view was obstructed by generators.
- Mark (10/5): - Beautiful hotel
- Richard (10/5): - Amazing Mansion with wonderful water views.
Staff is super friendly and very accommodating.
Love this hotel!
- Judith (10/5): - Grounds beautiful and onsite restaurant a plus.
- virginia (10/5): - The hotel has unique charm and a romantic feeling. It’s a beautiful setting. We loved our stay and look forward to coming back.
- Macayla (10/5): - beautiful would stay again!
- Roxanne C. (6/5): - Staff is attentive. My "ocean-view" room had a huge air conditioning unit outside the window. Did not see any ocean. Heat is not controlled by customer...how inane is that? No handicap accessibilty, and no indications of same. Very , very harmful for handcap customers. No vending machines, no ice. TV so small, cannot see clearly from bed. Not a good experience.
- Cathy (6/5): Beautiful hotel. Great staff - It’s not ADA compliant. As a handicapped person it was very difficult for me to get around.
- Grace (8/5): - Easy parking and great sea view.
- Monica (10/5): - Ocean Cliff is a beautiful hotel sitting atop a cliff away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The room was spacious and bed comfortable with a mini fridge, coffee maker and safe. We loved the restaurant and the views.
- Theresa (10/5): - I love this property. Room was beautiful and had a Toto toilet as an added treat. Thank you!!
- Linda (10/5): Nice couples hotel - We had a lovely weekend at OceanCliff. Well maintained property and very nice employees.
- Andrea (10/5): - This is a historic building so your room may not be perfect. We appreciated how this made the hotel unique. Our room was on the third floor. We had windows on both sides of the room giving us sea, sunrise, and sunset views which was so unexpected! Our room had two closets with built-in drawers and shelves. Breakfast was sufficient for continental (bagels, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, granola, orange juice, coffee). The housekeeping services were great; our room was so carefully tended when we returned. The views from this property are spectacular.
- Rita and Charles (10/5): Xmas in Newport - Simply amazing
- Brian (6/5): Sad excuse for a hotel - Would not recommend, hotel , for a restaurant that closes very early you can’t get room service or a snack . Rooms very poorly decorated. No where to hang clothes etc . It’s at best a bed and breakfast. A shame because the place as huge potential
- Nola (10/5): - Our stay was quiet; we were upgraded to a larger room which was lovely. The views were spectacular and the hotel itself was unique and historical.
- Karen (10/5): - This is a fabulous, historic property with views that are unbeatable and lawns that extend to the ocean's edge. Wonderful, helpful staff and an incredible setting, Highly recommend!
- Linda (10/5): - Beautiful setting and was previously a private residence which added to the ambiance
- Thomas (8/5): - Great views. Good breakfast
- Suzanne (8/5): - Beautiful location outside of town. Easy self parking, with gorgeous views of the harbor. There were weddings there both nights we stayed, so was a little noisy. They offered to switch our room for us, which was nice. Breakfast is continental, but we enjoyed eating it with the beautiful view!
- Paul (10/5): - quiet and clean
- Francis (10/5): - Excellent
Was a Monday so restaurant was closed
Staff was excellent
- Lucia (6/5): - Stay was deceit but not as expected for the price. Checking in staff was less than friendly. Room was uncomfortably warm, necessary to call front desk to cool down and then it went from warm to freezing temperature. Not well controlled.
Attended wedding during stay, great experience and fun. Bar severs pleasant. Food servers less than friendly.
- Darci (10/5): - Beautiful area
- Jennifer (8/5): - Beautiful grounds - perfect event venue. Continental breakfast was OK.
- Glen (8/5): - This is an old mansion turned into a hotel. As a result the rooms and bathrooms are on the small side.
The hotel is a popular wedding venue with a wedding both nights we were there. While attempting to check in and unload luggage a wedding party decided to have a photo shoot in the circular driveway. The wedding party was very nice and even helpful but the photographer was rude acting as if were were intruders even telling us to “hurry up”.
- Steve (2/5): - Very expensive small room with no chairs. Impossible to watch TV, Stairs with no elevator. Tough on 80 year olds,
- Michael (10/5): - Could not have been nicer
- Marianne (8/5): - The property was completely beautiful. The location is stunning. They were completely quiet on Wednesday night with no one Staying there, yet they put us in the attic room with poor air conditioning. Not sure why this has to be if they had no one staying there?
- Zena (4/5): - Can be found charming for a wedding venue, but best to stay elsewhere for anything else.
No shuttle, no pool, no vending machines, no mini fridge, A/C makes a lot of noise, pillows are too hard.
5 out of 5 for clean rooms.
Didn't try the restaurant.
- Liz (4/5): - We were put in a room that adjoined with another random guest and could hear every little thing even when they weren’t being particularly loud. We were kept up all hours of the night because you can hear every single thing. Even them peeing in the bathroom sounded like they were in our room. Past midnight and up at 6 it was terrible.
- Grace (4/5): - Unbelievable that the wifi service was sooo weak and spotty for the amount that this hotel charges - it seems they take for granted that most guests are there for a wedding - and therefore have no choice but to stay there regardless of the inconveniences … For everyone else, they should stay elsewhere
- Verified traveler (10/5): spending the night in a Newport mansion - The hotel was formerly a summer "cottage" in Newport, a perfect place to stay after touring some of the other "cottages" like the Breakers & The Elms. It's primarily an ocean-front wedding venue, although we had the place almost entirely to ourselves on a Mon-Tu stay. Wonderful old mansion, very friendly staff.
- albert (8/5): - Breakfast was nice
Didn't like the restaurant/bar being close monday & tuesday!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointed - The hotel room lacked proper A/C. I turned the room unit on but it was to loud to keep running all night.
The only positive comment I have regarding our visit would be for the view. The view from the lawn was exceptional!
- Jeffrey (6/5): - The hotel is a vintage hotel which was interesting but because of that it was basic. The room was clean but a bit cramped and the overall facility needs some updates. There were no need issues but a small hotel there were extras beyond a simple clean room. The location is beautiful but remote to Newport proper. There are weddings every day but they shut down at promptly 11:00. Most of the property seems to be dedicated to the weddings so there is little try public space or grounds. Signage would be a simple upgrade for the property, even the room numbers were hard to read.
Overall a beautiful, smaller, older feeling hotel; a bit Faulty Towers in a way but most of the facility and staff are concentrated on the rental, wedding venue.
- Colin (4/5): - This is definitely a wedding hotel. If you're not staying for a wedding it's beautiful but it's not the best option. The mattress was terrible, there wasn't anything in the room to sit on to put your shoes on. The staff wasn't in the front desk for 15 mins when I was trying to check in. The views in the back are wonderful, but I wouldn't stay there again.
- Kara (10/5): - Super cute place. Very quiet - maybe because it was during the week. A little confusing to find the place. Would have been nice to have an onsite restaraunt.
- Pam (6/5): - This is more about the wedding venue than it is a hotel for other guests. Wedding parties are their bread & butter but not other guests and us as guests get that vibe. The bar and restaurant was closed for a private party so no accommodations for others and at over $350 a night, not worth it
- john (8/5): - Rooms were small amd missing some amenities that you would expect at the rate. Public areas were very nice ,guestrooms just fair
- Christine (10/5): - Ocean Cliff Hotel was a gem of a find! We absolutely loved it! The views were spectacular!! It’s a very short drive to the lighthouse / another gem of a find! And the sunset there was magnificent!! We ended up having dinner there - which was delicious! Breakfast was included, lots of options, and you couldn’t beat the views of Narragansett Bay! We will definitely be going back!!!
- Kurt (10/5): Beautiful Hotel - OceanCliff is a beautiful Hotel. Very elegant, the views and the grounds are amazing. The staff is friendly and helpful.
- Janna (10/5): - Beautiful property
- Jeffrey (10/5): Beautiful! - It was a remarkable location and is a destination venue for anyone who wants to be in one of the most beautiful places on earth and where you can relax and enjoy yourself sitting on the lawn watching the sailboats cruise on Narragansett Bay! Don’t pass up this jewel!
- Marissa (6/5): - It is an historic building which is cool, until they have a wedding and you can hear and feel the vibrations of the music in your room until late at night. If you sleep deeply and don't have to be up early then you are all set. Didn't seem to have any quiet hours as we were woken up by guests screaming in the halls. Stayed there to be close to the start of the Newport 10 miler so wasn't thrilled with the quality of sleep I was able to get before the race. The grounds are gorgeous though.
- Linda (8/5): Relaxing Stay - The view is spectacular, right next to Castle Hill, very relaxing location.
- Erin (10/5): - What a view!!!
- Dave (8/5): - Great view
- Mary (10/5): - The views and proximity to Ocean Drive are great.
- Mike (10/5): - Excellent property. Friendly staff
- janice (8/5): - There was a wedding this night and the music was loud till after 10- good to ask prior to booking
- denise (10/5): - Beautiful ocean views, hotel is lovely. We enjoyed our stay.
- Joseph (10/5): - Awesome place.
- Autumn (8/5): - Despite some of the reviews I’ve seen, we had a great stay. We had issues with check in as they said they didn’t see my reservation but I had proof I booked through Orbitz. The night guy gave us a key with the proof and by morning during check out it was found that my reservation was still actually there and there was a mix up, they just didn’t print a card that was needed to be signed. Regardless, every one was super nice. We stayed one night and the room was nice, clean and the bed was comfortable. We had no issues with “noise” BUT we also went in March and not during peak booking times. We would definitely stay here again!
- James (10/5): - Ocean views from the room
- You (4/5): - The air conditioning system in my room was terrible. It's as cold as the outdoor in winter.
- Rich (10/5): - A
- Tasneem (8/5): - Family friendly with nice view
- MARLA (10/5): - Fabulous room and view!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Wonderful! Just a little too warm in the room. Wish we could have had a thermostat in our room to control it.
- Dwight (10/5): - Fantastic, staff and customer service!
- Joann (10/5): - The staff were so accommodating. The property was amazing. I loved everything about it!
- Amy (4/5): - Checked in New Year’s Eve, the bar and dining closed at 8pm! And there’s no room service either. It was not communicated to us during check in. We were hoping to stay at resort and have nice time but had to drive out to town for dinner. When we returned we asked front desk for more water guy said no! Didn’t offer to sell or call house keeping, offered no assistance. Will not return. One positive was the bathroom was clean.
- Michael (10/5): - Great place
- Alison (8/5): - Warm and inviting. The continental breakfast was delicious and the view was amazing!
