Guest Reviews
- Roxanne (10/5): - The Motel is conveniently located to all the services. It was quiet even though is close to the highway. The room was large and had a kitchen which is great. The only down was the room needs some air freshener or cigarette odor removal. Other than that it was a nice stay and I would consider a one month stay in October.
- Joan (10/5): - Very pleasant stay..good location and recently refurbished room
- Sheila (2/5): - The room was full of cobwebs. Cigarette burns in the sheets. Everything is old and needs updating. All the beach towns around have poor accommodations.
- Ruben (10/5): Great stay! - Our stay was great! The place is conveniently located and there is easy access to whatever you need. Rooms were super clean and confortable. Highly recommended.
- Peter (6/5): - Hardware needs improvement
- Tekonyote (10/5): Beautiful motel - My partner and I went for a powwow near by and decided to go last minute and we needed a place to stay the night and this place had a great price and great location as well. The room was fantastic the staff was amazing overall I highly recommend this place to stay I loved it. Fully renovated room we got to stay and it was beautiful.
- Shunmugapriya (6/5): - Staff were excellent. Property is older.
- Cheryl (2/5): - The room was disgusting, no face plate on the plug outlet.
Bathroom filthy disgusting.
- Erica (8/5): - The location was quite good. Ample parking. Efficiency unit modestly appointed but had what you needed. Shower stall was a little small but overall, good spot. Kudos to Rick who checked us in!
- Shannon (8/5): - The room was freshly renovated, the room could use more furniture as well a small table outside between the chairs. The shower was quite small. The host was pleasant, welcoming and friendly. The price was right!
- Dipankar (8/5): - Polite management, we arrived late and still no problem
Property is bit old, but clean , note its basic but we liked the little kitchen and 2 rooms , great for a nights rest without the frills
will visit again
- Robert (4/5): - Was given an annex room in the back of the property. Can’t speak to the rooms in the main building as shown in the picture but my room felt dirty and seemed to be used as a last resort. Plus, the adjoining room had long term residents in it.
- RICK (6/5): - 2 bedrooms
- Ruthann (4/5): - The owner is very nice. The rooms are old but clean. The noice level from people in other rooms is just awful. Two people in our room but only one hand towel one shower towel. Beds are ok chair has no padding left in it you sink right to the wood frame. I will maybe give the new rooms a try when they are finished after the fire. But it’s handy to everything
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Management was very easy to work w. A great stay!!
- Kelly (2/5): - Horrible disgusting rundown and not clean even to the dirty towel we found hanging behind the door. The only time we spent there was to sleep and even then my kids asked to sleep in car.
- ed (2/5): - Run down. Not clean.
- Ken (6/5): - Good location
- Sachin (8/5): Good. - Good affordable Motel for one day business trip. Will stay in coming days as well and will see the consistency.
- Kevin (8/5): - I constantly stay in motels for work. I will definitely stay again. Great value for the money.
- Johanna (10/5): - The rooms might be a little tired but the friendliness and hospitality from the host made up for it. Short distances to everything we needed made it a great holiday for my young son & I. Will definitely return!
- John (2/5): - The room was dirty; the comforter on the bed had a big spot on it; the vinyl on the chair was deteriorating. It appeared the room had not been vacuumed.
- Rae (10/5): - Excellent little motel. Loved having a kitchen.
- david (10/5): - the place was very clean and functional and the best price around
- vacation (8/5): - Just need to be more clean at carpet floor
- Carolina (8/5): - The place is very out dated and not so clean but it was cheep and close to the beach enough to settle and enjoy
- Verified traveler (4/5): - This motel was such a great location and price but not good enough for the cleanliness. I am comparing to motels of same price point not a luxury hotel so I am not going to mention shower facilities bed size or pillows. I am being fair!
Hair trimming in the sink either beard hair or armpit- of previous tenant.
Sticky nightstands. Crumbs of food on top of mini fridge. No extra garbage bags to pack my own garbage.
Basically looked like nobody cleaned it and yes I did go out and buy cleaning products. It is unfortunate because you know in the summer it is a busy place and you feel bad to ask for a different room so you take what you can get.
- Greg (10/5): - The wife and I were up Aug 17-18th. Had a great stay at Maplewood Motel. Owner was a great guys very friendly & helpful. I would stay there again.
Thanks Greg & Julie
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The guy that owned the place was really nice and I wanted to like it. Some updates have been done like new flooring and paint but our feet were filthy after a small amount of time walking on the floor. Tub and vanity were very old/dirty, the roller blind was very broken and the bedding were typical motel bedspreads from the 80s. It was nice to have a fridge microwave and tv and it was just a quick stopover for us but I was hoping it would have been a little cleaner.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Needs major overhaul !
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The staff was very friendly and apologetic, but they need to get more organized
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Had no blanket on bed so we bought our own, everything was very dated except the tv. Like very dated. Our lounge chair looked like it was picked up from the curb it was imitation leather half was peeled off. We wouldn't use it. Fridge was dirty inside and not clean at all. We cleaned the toilet. One set of towels for 2 people. We did get a second set. If you want a low price motel that's quiet this is perfect with just a few issues. Beats paying over $300 a night at Holiday Inn. We paid $79 a night.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The person who was at the reception was the worst ever i met and he does not how to speak with people.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Location great. Hotel not properly cared for due to insufficient staff.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Place was filthy. People nice. But really gross.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Uncleaned
- Jamie (4/5): - Disgusting
Not clean
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great location, reasonable cheap. I feel it could of been cleaned better, some basic dusting etc....
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room needed a total over reno. Bed was clean but not comfortable. Room needed to be cleaned dust on
radiators, stains on doors, screen door had a large hole
where it had obviously been kicked. Kitchen utensils were
stained and dirty, liked that is had a small fridge and microwave. Television did not work no instruction on how
to operate it. Have stayed here a few times but it has gone down in appearance, maybe due to Covid. Will not stay here again and would not recommend it
- Verified traveler (2/5): - no hygiene and the bathroom seems to never be cleaned ... I can't take a shower
- josie (4/5): maplewood - the hotel is needing some repair and it needs to be cleaned a lot better inside..the staff were very friendly but the hotel room needs a facelift..the one chair was very ragged and floors needed to be cleaned better..it was way too pricey for the room even though it had 2 bedrooms and a kitchen ..that was nice to have those and a fridge.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The room wasn't very clean. It was supposed to have an equipped kitchenette, one fork, no cups, 2 chipped tea cups, no coffee maker, no kettle, and the only cooking pot was a bent frying pan. The only way to turn off the light in the kitchenette area was to unscrew the lightbulb. No GFI in the kitchen or bathroom. The walls are paper thin and we could hear EVERYTHING in the other units either side of us. There were only two towels in the bathroom. I could choose to either plug in the bedside light or the airconditioner, not both at the same time.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The air conditioning unit in the walls had holes all around it with tape that fell off. Bunch of bugs in the room. Hairs in both beds.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Me and my girlfriend went to this hotel for 3 nights. 89$ plus tax per night.
Let's just say, I regret not reading the reviews more thoroughly, and checking the room before paying.
When we first arrive, there was nobody at the receptions, door was locked. Had to call two numbers to get a hold of someone. A young guy came and unlocked the door for us. The guy wasn't very friendly, no hello, just kind of seemed to want to get the check-in over with.
The room we got was not in the main building, it was located in the back, in a seperate building which was smaller and separated in 4 rooms. Me and my girlfriend thought that was pretty cool.
When we opened the door, we were very disappointed. The room smelt of a musky odour drowned in the smell of two air freshener. The room looked as if it hadn't been properly cleaned for a long time. There were disgusting hand mark on the walls everywhere, I even saw some boogers on the wall. The carpet was stained at multiple spot, and the biggest stain between the beds was sticky to the feel. The linen was clean, but decided to check the mattresses. There were no bed bugs, but disgusting stains and no proper mattress cover. Also saw some mold near the bathroom door.
Esthetically, wasn't that good either.
Our expectations were not to high as we knew we were getting one of the cheaper options compared to other motels in the Bruce Peninsula.
But there should be a standard for cleanliness at any motel.
I don't recommend this Motel
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Place located conveniently, however overall the appearance of the apartment poor and cleanliness was lacking and only 1 towel for 2 people.
Wouldn't recommend this motel and I would definitely not stay here again.
Overall dissatisfied
- Verified traveler (2/5): - They need to clean this place
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Understanding the low price in beach town ... it still remains a smelly dump ... no pride in ownership ...
- 18Chris86 (2/5): Absolutely filthy - very disappointing. - We used to stay at this motel 2+ years ago, it was lovely and clean. NOW, it was absolutely filthy. Floors had not been washed, the kitchen and bathroom were disgusting, no towels, dirty sheets, garbage under the beds and behind the nighttable. Dirty dishes in the sink when we arrived. Stuff spilt in the fridge. No kettle, a dirty coffee maker, etc. We would not eat there and will never stay again.
- 195destinys (2/5): AVOID, TERRIBLE! - This place is disgusting. Please avoid. The place hasn't been cleaned at all. We got the one bedroom kitchenette room, wanted to stay a month- however, quickly switched to 1 night after seeing and going through what we did. There was black mold, dark hair in the shower (as though it was a community shower that doesn't get cleaned), remotes were sticky, walls were splattered with God only knows what, the freezer had yellow stuff growing in it, we could hear mice in the walls, nothing had been swept/vacuumed for probably a good month.. etc. I could go on. Avoid.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The pictures look a lot better then what you get. It wasn’t horrible if you know there is no kitchenette. And if you are not expecting folded towels. Think the management is a bit overwhelmed by running it. Need to do something about the garbage. The best thing is the manager is very friendly and wants to help.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It looks better in the pictures. It is almost like it is too much for the staff to handle. He is extremely friendly though.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The bathroom and carpet etc were filthy. The manager was creepy and confrontational. Many of the rooms are rented by week or month to welfare recipients.
Hotels.com should NOT be listing the Maplewood!!!
- George (4/5): - The place is a little run down and dingy, especially the bathrooms.
- Craig (8/5): Good stay - Certainly not 5-Star, but clean, well maintained.
- Luisa (4/5): - First of all when checking in the person could not find my reservation. When I did check into the room, i was not happy with the room. It had a musty smell and it didn’t appear to be clean, especially during a Covid 19 pandemic. I was in the room for about 5 minutes and asked for a refund. The person at the front desk didn’t speak English well, and refused to give a full refund because I booked with Expedia. I had to pay 30 dollars for a room I didn’t even stay in. Very disappointed with this experience.
- DMCBWXT (2/5): Filthy and overpriced - Filthy shower stall. All the furniture looks like it was found in people's garbage. Whole place needs a full renovation. Dirty sponge on the kitchenette sink. Long black hair in the shower.... I have very short brown hair! Overpriced. Over $100/night is an absolute joke. The only reason I didn't leave is because I expensed the cost.
- garbearz (2/5): Disgusting Rats Nest - The #1 worst motel I have EVER visited. Run, run very far away.
HOUSEKEEPING - Non- Exisent. Glad we had our (winterized) RV for accomodation. Needed a comfort station. Would not have removed my boots in this claptrap. Use shower??? Not on your life. Damn expensive crapper.
- Ann (6/5): - there wasn't a mattress protector on the mattress and our sheet loosened up and there was blood on mattress,,,It was quiet though,,, likely won't stay again
- Verified traveler (4/5): Rundown - Location of motel great. Rooms need updating. No mirror I bathroom. Bedding was clean but the rest of room wasn't so clean. Can't complain too much for the price.
- 827marichuc (8/5): Small but neat - This is a family-owned motel business and it’s close to port elgin beach. The room is small but everything you need is in their. They have fridge, microwave, plates and utensils. Washroom is well cleaned and maintained. If you travel long drive and needed a place to sleep and rest a bit, this is a good and affordable one. The front desk is very helpful and friendly as well.
- Carolyn (2/5): - It was a good location not too far of a walk for pimpkin fest and near restaurants
- Verified traveler (10/5): - convenient, kitchenette, can walk to shopping and services,
- Tyler (2/5): - Dirty poor customer service wouldn't go back or recommend to anyone
- 103beverleys (2/5): Dirty rooms - Stayed at this motel in August. They gave us room 19 first..it was dirty, microwave had crumbs in it, no stove. We Asked for another room. This room had cobwebs, stove top was very dirty, had not been cleaned recently. Beds were not made each morning, room was not vacuumed all week and we took out our garbage each day. Tiles were lifting in the bathroom.. a safety hazard and floor of shower stall was broken.
Would not recommend this motel. Will not be returning.
- nancy1411 (2/5): rooms were dirty - We stayed at this motel for a week in Aug. Since Tony & his wife Sue left the place has turned into a dump. The rooms were never cleaned on a daily basis. I bought cleaning products at the dollar store to clean before we used anything. The floors were covered in dirt and crumbs. The carpet had never been vacuumed since I don't know when. My bed had two pillows but only one had a cover. The pillows smelled and I slept with a towel over the pillows every night. They never came in to pick up the garbage. We put the garbage out each day and asked for new bags. We were't even sure if the bedding had been changed. The only thing they changed was the towels every day and they were usually handed into us. There was one chair outside for each room. There was garbage on the lawn which never ever got picked up. Dirty ash trays were outside the rooms which never got emptied. We would never again stay at the Maplewood. I asked for the owners name but was told that they couldn't give it out without his permission. I phoned the Chamber of Commerce but they are not members of the Chamber. I hope that the owner reads this as I plan on phoning him.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Recieved an upgrade without asking. The owners are great.
- Heather (2/5): Avoid this place - The garden view was of a picnic table with a half drank bottle of beer left on it. The washroom was disgustingly dirty, we actually used toilet paper to try and clean the toilet, floor, sink, mirror which resulted in a quarter filled garbage can of black toilet paper. The microwave was food incrusted and the dust around the coffee maker was apparent. Coffee stain in the cups. Duct tape around the edge of floor and tub, shower/tub was dirty too. Was charged $131 for a night. Refused to stay there and got a full refund.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Dirty, disgusting, run down, in need or repair. Bed had someone else's hair in it. Bath room was gross. Floors not swept. Tub was destroyed. The type of place you left your shoes on slept in your clothes.
- Jess (4/5): - The hotel was very dirty. The staff seemed friendly but the rooms were very outdated and not clean. Not what I was expecting.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not so much the property, but the way business is conducted. They wouldnt acknowledge a confirmation from Expedia and we had to make a last minute reservation at another hotel for an additional $60 per night. I cancelled another reservation for the next night and was charged a cancellation fee equivalent to the original cost of the room. They couldn't take payment from the Expedia site or over the phone but they have no problem taking the cancellation fee directly from the credit card on file with Expedia. Very disappointed. We are working in the area for the next 2 months, but will be taking our business elsewhere.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Upon arrival, the motel appeared to be clean and well kept. The staff member was friendly but once we got our room key, we were disappointed by the cleanliness of the room.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This place was horrible! We were shown two rooms because the first one had a horrible stench of cigarette smoke. The second one wasnt any better. We asked to cancel our reservation because my mother couldn’t stop coughing as soon as she entered the rooms. There were bugs all over the entrance of the doors. The place was dirty and the kept. Thankfully we got a full refund, and went somewhere else.
- Stephanie (2/5): - This place was beyond terrible. Never again would i stay here.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The young lady at the front desk for checking in was very helpful and friendly and knowledgeable.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This place has really gone down since the new owners took over. The washroom, carpet, bedding, fridge and microwave were all dirty! I was totally disgusted with this place and will not return. Stayed in the same room last year and it was a much better experience. I certainly do NOT recommend this place at all.
- Sallyieh2003 (8/5): Great location - Older motel but clean, linens clean and in good repair. We stayed in a two bedroom suite and it was spacious and well laid out. Kitchen had a small fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker and kettle. Two countertop burners. Kitchen table and chairs. Staff very nice and helpful. Lots of shopping and restaurants in walking distance. I will return to this place.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The new management has not kept up on repair and cleanliness.
Shower squirts water everywhere.
No “extra towels” one set per person
Found wrappers food crumbs on floor, dirty fridge and microwave. Dusty cobwebs in all corners. Scummed toilet. We had the young cleaning crew redo our room with instructions from us. I don’t think they had any training. Not blaming them. Staff needs training, good equipment, feed back appreciation and to be paid well.
We did receive a $70 refund. The difference between a room and kitchenette since stovetop didn’t work.
Hoping they can pick up on all this because I had stayed there before without complaint.
- 14carolina89 (8/5): Passing through - Pleasant room at rear of premises. Quiet. Two comfortable beds and small kitchenette area including coffee pot, fridge and microwave. Parking area outside. Pleasant area and close to amenities and countryside.
- melody (4/5): - I called ahead to make sure I was confident I was getting what I was asking for. I called twice. It was too easy for them just to say don't worry, everything is here you will need. That was not the truth! We did not get what we asked for at all. Then when we put a Do Not Disturb sign on our door, we get back and they had been in our room and made the bed so they do not pay attention to that either. We were going for 4 nights, only stayed 2 and changed places.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Old building, they smells a bit.
Customer service was great
- Verified traveler (10/5): - For the price, it was a nice place. Walking distance to all food and other stores. It is an old place , but it is clean and well maintained. I stayed with my spouse and young kids, and everyone was happy about it. Would love to go there again.
- JS (8/5): - The facilities were clean, reasonably priced. Fast food restaurants are near by (walking distance)
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Accommodating staff ! Nice quiet room and very helpful manager.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Towels, soaps, and wash were available and the room was clean.
But the building is getting a bit old. You hear cracks/creaks all the time and the furniture has chips, etc.
Slightly overpriced for the quality of stay.
- lovestotravelToronto (6/5): Okay for an overnight stay - Maplewood was average, we didn't expect too much since it was inexpensive. It was clean so that was not an issue. Didn't like to look of the bad and dirty looking caulking at the base of the shower. Totally put me off even stepping in it. Other that that, the location was easy for getting around and the owners were very nice and helpful. I would go back, other rooms could have been different too. Worth the $89.00
- heavenlygal (8/5): Very nice stay - My husband and I stayed here during a week day in June. We were there to attend a funeral. The owner Tony was very pleasant and friendly.
The Motel had everything we needed to have breakfast in the room. (We brought my gluten free food and toaster bags)
There was a nice hot shower with good water pressure. The rooms were spotless and who could ask for anything more.
I would stay there again, since the price was very fair for the type of room we had.
Thanks Tony.
- travelroc12 (6/5): chaep-outdated-clean-run-down - title says it all. well past ite prime, i doubt an upgrade is possible without tearing it down.
BUT.... it was clean, amazed that no bugs seen. inexpensive. owner friendly, beds need to be improved. let's say it represents "local color".
- allena905 (8/5): Comfortable, one night stay during the Huron Fringe Birding Festival - This is an older roadside motel operated by very friendly and helpful people. The room was clean and well equipped with fresh linen, good wifi, new flat screen tv and a small, stocked kitchenette. The small bathroom was also well stocked with clean towels, soaps, shampoos and skin moisturizers.
It is located within walking distance of some restaurants, Tim Horton's, Walmart and Giant Tiger.
- Rubyslippers16_11 (6/5): Reasonable, clean motel - We were looking for a one night mid-week place to stay in Port Elgin and came across this nice motel. It was very reasonably priced and included 2 rooms with a queen bed in each. Plus a kitchenette. It was close to downton and the beach. There was only a shower, no bath. I would definitely stay here again.
- brynet2017 (10/5): Brian & Annette Cunningham - We couldn't ask for a better place to stay. Rooms are clean, beds are confortable, you couldn't ask for a better location and the owners are awesome people.we have been going there for the past 5 years and going to continue . It's a home away from home.
- 416WendyA (6/5): Basic and Clean - Redesigned park model trailer turned into two units. King size bed. Microwave. Fridge. Coffee maker. New sink etc. Air conditioned. Cable tv and free wifi. No frills but does the job if you are staying short term. Pleasant owners.
- thedwightway (8/5): I always feel special here - Once again I'm running the gauntlet to deal with family emergency and the couple that runs this place is there for me again. Last minute booking, great rate, clean, affordable, quiet room. Rooms include a small kitchenette, free parking and very comfortable.
- HESSN22 (8/5): Little old fashioned with old fashioned price to go with it! - Selected this hotel as other Trip Advisor Contributors had given it 4.2 out of 5 and it was far less expensive than the other hotels in the area by $50 - $60 per night; was only looking for a place to sleep while visiting family. Rooms are a little dated, but room was clean and bed was comfortable. Room hade a micro wave, two burner built in hot plate, small fridge, tv and free wifi. Owner was very hospitable. When I made the reservation, two weeks in advance, did not need to provide a credit card to guarantee reservation ... refreshing change. Would definitely stay here again ... right across from McDonald's, next door to the beer store, pub and Mary Browns ...
- Redfox-7 (6/5): Low Price but some Deficiencies - The Maplewood is operated by friendly people and offers comfortable beds. The kitchen is pleasant and well equipped. Unfortunately, you can hear every noise from adjoining rooms. The taps in the bathroom leaked badly and the shower head was very loose. The arrangement of the queen size room was cluttered and difficult to navigate. This motel is acceptable for a one night stay at a low price.
- rockybeach10 (4/5): Some things you just can't ignore - I try to stay at "mom and pop" places when I can. After all, it's usually just a place to sleep.
Maplewood is an old motel, which they have worked at to modernize, and they keep it clean and tidy.
The grounds have big shade trees, and it is on the 'main drag' close enough to restaurants and shopping that you can easily walk.
I was in room 10, which had a small kitchen area with sink, fridge, stove, counter, and all the cooking and eating utensils and tools you'd need, plus a microwave.
While small, there was a table for 2, a comfortable bed, with side tables, a big dresser, and arm chair, as well as a small clothes cupboard.
The large tv had plenty of cable channels.
The wifi was free, easy to access, and quick.
There was cross-ventilation with a screen door, and bathroom window, as well as an air-conditioner which I didn't need.
While sometimes it took a short time to arrive, there was plenty of HOT water.
The small bathroom had a sink, shower, and toilet, as well as a small shelf with toiletries for 2, as well as face cloths, hand towels and shower towels, and a shower mat.
Even though I didn't leave towels on the floor, they were replaced with clean ones, but the shower towels were thin, and smaller than I'm used to.
Parking is right outside your door, with the spaces clearly delineated with a 'walking area' marked off between each space.
There was a table and umbrella outside every second room, and Muskoka chairs outside each other.
The room was clearly marked no smoking.
The bed was comfortable, and overall it was a quiet place.
BUT
The bathroom shower stall in #10 had lots of mold along the three walls of the base. One side wall was loose, and that was the source of the problem, and where it was worst. It will only get even worse, and lead to some structural failure. For this reason alone, I would not stay here again.
If you want to get picky, I have never seen crown moulding installed flat along the wall, as opposed to obliquely against the wall and ceiling.
And while there was nothing wrong with the tv, I have never had to use 2 remotes, for doing different things - like one for channels, and the other for volume.
I could hear what the folks next door were talking about, but I presume there were hearing issues involved there, and I had to up the volume quite loud on the tv to cancel out their choices - probably to the detriment of the folks on the other side of me.
They were smokers, outside at the table, but that meant I had to close the screen door.
