Guest Reviews
- Alla (10/5): - Very clean.
Friendly place
- Jane (8/5): - Need arrive early to meet someone
We arrived around 9 pm so we are waiting until someone open front door but breakfast was outstanding
The girl gave us food to go also
She was nice
Room was very clean big for 3 people
Shower was very good
Better then in other hotel in Iceland
- Helen (10/5): - This hotel is super clean and nice, with breakfast included. The staff are very friendly, though their English skills are limited. It is the largest hotel I've stayed in, and the room includes a bathroom. Additionally, coffee and tea are available.
- JAMES (10/5): - I was initially worried (after reading other reviews), and the place looked empty when we arrived, but I was surprised at how good this place is. Yes, it does have self check in, but many places in Iceland do this. The room was very clean. The shower was the best one I’ve had this week, and we’ve stayed at different places each night. The continental breakfast was amazing! It had much more variety than at an American hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My only problem was getting the check in code, but I blame Expedia for not forwarding it to me ( same thing happened at another stay).
- Tzirel (2/5): Do not stay here - There is a self check in system and there was nobody to talk to so we couldn’t get our check in code.
There was no way to access our hotel room.
So if you are relying on sleeping here for a night there’s a good chance you’ll be stuck like us.
- Susy (10/5): - Everything was great, the staff was fantastic too
- Abhinav (2/5): - Extremely rude staff. No one is at check in desk. We never rcvd the check in code. Tried to call the number listed on the booking atleast 100 times but there was no answer. The housekeeping staff there does not know english and were unwilling to listen to anything. Another couple was also going through the same thing at the same time. There was no one. Check in process is horrible. Rooms are ok.
- THAI (10/5): - Self check-in was a little bit hiccups at first. But after that everything was great. The shower area was a little bit too small but we managed that.
- Peter (10/5): - Ismail was very resourceful there and went above and beyond to accommodate me and check in early during a snow storm. Great experience overall!
- Adrian (8/5): - Easy to get to from the main highway and great process to get the key with minimal effort. Would recommend this spot to others.
- JOSE ABRAHAM (8/5): - It's a good place to hunt north lights
- John (8/5): - The property itself was fine. The fact that no one is around and you do checkin by phone is a bit weird but maybe that’s the new normal. They have an awesome dinning facility but it’s closed. The only place to eat is the large N1 gas station which was good but about 2 miles away. Just odd for such a nice place. Rooms were good and very clean. Just kind of odd the way things were. There were about 6 other cars that came. It’s really the only place to stay in this part so don’t hesitate to book it but be prepared. It’s quiet.
- Amber (10/5): - This was a beautiful and quiet stop across our journey around the Ring Road of Iceland. This stay was conveniently located along our route and thought there is not much else located around this stay, we did find the BEST restaurant in Iceland, Sjávarborg Restaurant. This was by far the most amazing food experience in Iceland.
- Chhaya (10/5): - Defines great place to stop in, quiet and nice history of the establishment
- BEI (8/5): - The hotel is a basic but clean. The complimentary breakfast is a plus. However, there was some issue on obtaining the lock passcode from the hotel. I was told that the passcode will be emailed to me on the day of my check-in but I did not receive it by email. I had to use roaming of my phone to call the hotel at noon for the passcode.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Well organised place we had a pleasant stay - Beautiful place in a quiet location perfect to relax and enjoy the natural environment. The room was big, clean and well taken care of. Easy check in using lockers for the keys. Overall it was a pleasure staying there!
- Mark (6/5): - Difficulty in checking in, no instructions on how to open the room door. No cups or classes in the room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Poor value - I would find other accommodations, honestly. There was no Internet, no TV, no amenities in the bathroom, no hot water kettle, no refrigerator, the showerhead had little pressure. The bed was comfortable and the heat worked. Very poor value for the money.
- IMAN (8/5): - Very clean. Staff should improve their hospitality; or may be they just don't speak English well, so they are a bit shy.
- Keith (10/5): - Employee was very accommodating regarding extra towels. Our stay included a very good and versatile breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel was extremely clean and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and felt safe with all the precautions in place.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Very unkind stuff and They locked the restaurant door. We used a cup of water the day before. So terrible.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Spotted Northern Lights! - Room was very basic, but clean. Shower was too small. Water had a bad smell to it. Bed was ok, not too comfortable. We drove south of this guesthouse for about 15 mins and spotted northern lights
- LMW (8/5): - Property conditions in general well maintained, quite and clean, good location for Northern Lights.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff are very nice . I have little problem with car, one screw on door was lose. He came to check and found rench to fix it. I like to say thank again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - There was no staff to attend to our needs. It’s located far far from anything. Far from shop. Far from restaurants. Breakfast was bad—nothing nice to eat. Choice of food very very limited.
- Kj (10/5): value for money - 1. Room and bathroom is big.
2. Good lighting inside bedroom which will not cause too bright for our eye.
3. Good breakfast.
Comment : suggest to add a holder for the cover at the breakfast area ( ham & fruit, beside the staff kitchen entrance ).
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I was worried about self check in. But it went smoothly.
- TT (8/5): - No kitchen. Otherwise is good. Clean, quiet, private bathroom.
- S.B. (10/5): - Great location, accomodation very comfortable and clean. Couldn't have asked for more.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very comfortable, private bathrooms, breakfast included. The self check in process was good.
- Cheryl (8/5): Quiet and relaxing stay! - Excellent stay! Quiet and comfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This hotel was good. Nice facilities, great views.
- Claudia (6/5): Sort of weird, but usable. - It was a little weird to show up and call somebody from a phone in the lobby (no front desk person) to find out our room code. Also, the light in the part of the hotel we stayed in, which was not attached to the main building where there was supposed to be complimentary coffee and tea (but not enough clean cups), was on a movement timer and kept going off if you didn't get into your room fast enough. But, overall I guess it was okay for a "pit stop."
- Amanda (10/5): - Cute hotel with a good breakfast buffet to start your day. There is an N1 (gas station) 1km away that has a restaurant. Next nearest restaurant is 30+ min away. However, bed was super uncomfy, ended up leaving the duvet on the bed to add padding (could feel mattress springs pressing into my back).
- Jon (6/5): - Nice for a stop off on your way traveling around Iceland. Rooms are a bit outdated. Still very serviceable hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - breakfast included,good location,comfortable place.
- Darren (8/5): Great halfway point between Reykjavik and Akureyri - Cosy hotel. Plenty of room to move in the lounge area and pretty filling breakfast. Only staffed at breakfast time but super easy to locate and check in.
- Spock (10/5): - Love this hotel, self check in system is great. Breakfast could be better
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The walls seemed from paper.
We have spent two nights there and around 10 p.m. a famuly arrived who booked around 5 rooms around ours. And were shouting all night from one room to another listening loud music etc. The internet is working just on the corridor and not in the rooms. The hairdryer was not working.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Clean and modestly priced hotel - It was a great place to stay for our trip around the ring road. The hotel was very modestly priced, had a good breakfast buffet, and had clean, comfortable beds. The blackout curtains were the best we encountered during our trip to Iceland. (Important if you need a dark room to sleep in) There nothing to "do" in this location. Only gripe is that there is NO front desk person. You "self check-in" with a code and key box next to your assigned room (sent in an email before you arrive to the hotel) so if you want to talk to someone or ask questions, there is no way to do it. If you are okay with this, then the North Star Hotel is a good choice for your stay too.
- Helen (8/5): - It’s on road 701 just off from A1. Quite and very clean hotel
- Peter (8/5): Good value, but expect a simple experience - The hotel is simple and basic - which is why it is inexpensive. The self check in makes sense to lower cost but could be better executed. We didn't receive an email with self check in instructions prior to our arrival (we booked only one day in advance) and the phone numbers provided we always busy. There was a email address at the front desk which responded within 15 minutes. Once we had the info we needed things were pretty easy. However, in the evening we tried to contact them about needing more toilet paper and couldn't reach anyone. However, the cost was low and the room was clean, so we didn't get to frustrated about the lack of response. The included breakfast was simple but we were grateful for it because there is nothing nearby and we were on bike. In a car I think there is one gas station about a minute away and then the next option would involve a 30 minute drive. The hotel itself doesn't sit on outstanding property - but the surrounding area is beautiful. You are right at the bottom of the bay and about a half mile from the main road, which insulates you from road noise. This road is paved and well maintained. We'd stay here again.
- Jason (8/5): Clean, efficient, and economical - Generally very comfortable room, and breakfast was although the self check-in felt a bit cold. Room was in good condition and clean, but the carpet was quite worn and needs to be replaced. Black-out curtains were wonderful!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Not very much here, facilities are kind of old and dated. Clean enough but a little dim and dingy.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This hotel is perfect for its price. No complaints. Clean and quiet. The breakfast was also good.
- Cameron (10/5): Good location, right off of the Ring Road (Hwy 1) - I was quite happy with my stay! My room was very comfortable, well-furnished and the included breakfast was quite nice. This is a self check in hotel (which are common in Iceland), so you will be emailed your door access code number in advance of your stay. I had no problems at all with this check in process.
- Kaci (6/5): Nice Hotel- Problematic Check-In - Before selecting the North Star Hotel, I read other reviews that cautioned about the self-service check-in and lack of desk staff. Before our stay, I received the expected email with the code to secure the key; however, when we arrived, the assigned room had been given to other guests. We called the help line multiple times with no answer. Eventually, the guests that occupied the room we were assigned were kind enough to go wake the breakfast staff that live on site to try to address the situation. Using Google translate to communicate with the staff, we eventually succeeded in asking them to call the owner and were able to use another room. The breakfast staff were very kind in trying to help us, but we did not speak the same language. On the whole, this is a lovely, charming hotel. The self-service check in is not the problem, but there must be clearer communication if changes or reassignments need to occur.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A bit old, but clean. Nice Breakfast.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Towels was dirty. Very small the room. Smels terrible the room and the bed linens.
- Tab (8/5): - There were no staff in front desk. Self check in. The place was dated and it was very hot that day with no air conditioning. For the price, you get what you pay for. If you just need a place to sleep for the night, it’ll do. They had a decent breakfast spread. Overall, it was ok with me. My wife hated it.
- Hotelmotel (4/5): - I didn’t know Iceland had a period of 70s motels but clearly they did. This felt more like a truck stop or a gas station then a hotel. The towels were all ragged and gross. The room had stains on the furniture and carpet. There were black Beatles in my bathroom. I guess this beats camping because it has a shower but otherwise I would say skip it and stay somewhere further or closer to your next destination. Nothing has been replaced since the day it was built
- sun (6/5): - i think good idea self check in and check out we went our room on bed socking wet towels that makes blanket got wet. breakfast was ok but staff he came looks like he just wake up not clean up him self
- Verified traveler (8/5): Exactly what we needed - Noted that this is not a 5-star hotel and the facilities are dated. The hotel was kinda located in the middle of nowhere. There was no staff at the front desk 24/7. However, we've found a hotel that was clean and the bed was comfortable. The email with instruction to open the box for the room key was received well in advance and the instruction was very clear. The breakfast selection was good enough for our needs. And the coffee wasn't burned like other "better" hotels that charged us more money.
- J (6/5): There is no hotel. Just only a room - Self Check-In was Ok. The only employees there are those in the kitchen in the morning. The outside area of the hotel is neglected. Just only 6 TV channels. The price that I paid was ridiculous high for that kind of hotel.
- kate (6/5): - Breakfast staff was wonderful! The room was just ok but the people in the morning were so friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Only hotel for many miles, nicely located about 1 km from N1. Easy to use. Would appreciate a microwave oven and pot to boil water when we arrive. Otherwise, forced to go to eat at N1. Rooms good size. Breakfast good. Staff friendly.
- Molly (6/5): No frills hotel! - No frills hotel. Self serve check in, tv in room but did not work, no extra pillows and breakfast buffet was just okay. Not a lot of options in the area.
- Albert (8/5): No-thrills overnight stop - Good no-thrills overnight stopover between Reykjavik and Akureyri. Reception not manned but the email contains a code to obtain the room key. The room is comfortable and does the job to provide a good night's sleep.
- SIO MUI (8/5): nice hotel - nice hotel but nothing around, self checkin needed
- Chantal (2/5): Don't book there. No front desk, no service - There is no front desk!!! When we arrived, impossible to reach the owners by the number indicated on the desk. A couple had the entrance code for their room but did not know the room number. They tried the code on all the locks in the rooms !!!
So we slept in the car!!!
- Alex (10/5): Nice hotel without any staff - Hotel is nice (comparing the price and quality). Rooms are quite huge and clean, hot water is not a problem in shower, breakfast is good also.
Moreover it is very interesting experience being in a empty hotel without any staff)
Staff is appeared only to serve breakfast in the morning.
Check-in and check-out are as fast as possible. BUT only if you know that e-mail form hotel with all required data shold be recevied few days before checkin.I observed some frustrated people near the empty reception.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean and comfortable sufficient for a night stay, tea & coffee available in the dining area 24hrs.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Pit stop in between Akueyri and Reykjavik - It is a good inexpensive place to stay and rest your head in between Akueyri and Reykjavik.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - We did not get an email with key code, and when we called the number to get it nobody picked up the phone.
Also, there was no kettle or any cups to have some tea or soup and there is no coffe machine for it.
- sianp (8/5): Perfect for a stopover - We were travelling from Akureyri to Reykjavik. North Star hotel was roughly halfway. Good value for money. Nearest restaurant is the N1 service station approx 2 km - reasonable food. Hotel was quiet. Check in was automatic but not obviously straightforward - Expedia send you a code, you enter it into the combination lock next to the door and hey presto your door key is released (easy when you know how).
- Judith (2/5): - This is an unmanned hotel – meaning no front desk staff and you access your room by a frequently untended number to find out your room number and access code. VERY difficult to communicate with whoever runs/administers the hotel--took close to a dozen calls to get anyone to answer phone. Hotels.com was useless in assisting to obtain the room number and access code.
No heat. Two lights burned out. Tube tv w/o remote, would not turn on. No posting of breakfast time. There are at least two buildings but no map indicating where the rooms are. Ours was in a second building that looked like a work shed from outside. No tissues. No wash cloths. Shower gel/shampoo dispenser missing. Minimal lighting in hall for entering code to obtain key. Pool table with two cues and two balls in main building. But better than trying to drive many more km or sleeping in car.
- Verified traveler (2/5): The room heating was not working. - The hotel did not have a reception at the property but the management said we would always be able to contact the hotel by either phone or email. I called the hot line and many, many times and wrote 5 emails to ask about the room heating. No one answered the calls nor was there any reply to my emails. DEAD SILENCE...........
- Amy (4/5): Very basic - We arrived tired after a long drive, and the room wasn't yet ready. That was ok as we sat in the lobby using WiFi and went to the service station for an early dinner.
The room was basic but clean. Unuseable WiFi in the rooms. I was profoundly annoyed by the hotel's website promising a kettle (and phone, not that we needed it), but none was there. Some of the budget hotels didn't offer phones, but if it's promised it should be delivered. It also says there's a wood fire in the common area, which there is, but it's not lit so not as cosy as implied. Having said that, the ruins themselves had effective heating.
We were happy to get moving again the following day.
- Harrison (8/5): Quaint hotel without room WiFi - Check in procedures are not very clear. As well, the phone number we are instructed to contact in case of issues is NEVER PICKED UP. EXTREMELY difficult to contact the hotel with issues as they arise.
- Jasmine (2/5): What is this place?! - My fiancé and I had booked to stay here for one night while driving along the Ring Road. Boy should we have listened to the terrible reviews, but at the time of this booking there was no other place in Hvammstangi available. The process is self check-in; no big deal we thought. Once we got there, there was an area where the keys for each room were. However, there were no instructions associated with who got which key. Thankfully another couple had checked in around the same time and told us that about a month prior he had been emailed the room number and passcode to his room. I frantically searched my email and expedia, but sadly had never received such information. The hotel had a number posted to call if we needed assistance, but the kept going busy and NO ONE answered x3 (we tried at different time intervals too). Finally the janitor? showed up to the front and when we asked for assistance, he said he had the passcodes to all the rooms, but just needed us to tell him our room number; other than that he couldn't help us. Already this was a big safety/security flag, and to be honest really unsettling. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Thankfully, we were able to locate a wonderful hotel 40 minutes north (Daeli Guesthouse...which we would recommend to EVERYONE! Run by an amazing family and located in a breathtaking setting.
- William (6/5): Nice if you get in, be sure to receive email - This is a self check-in hotel. You must receive email with your room number and code to get key in advance; kind of like the lock box realtors use. If you arrive late and call for help, no one will answer. There were people who spent the night in the lobby. I would not book this hotel last minute, but all worked out well for me.
- Tatiana (10/5): - This is self check in hotel and the telephone number for help was not answering. Many thanks to very nice people from Bulgaria who were working in the restaurant kitchen at the hotel who helped us to check in.
- Alena (6/5): Did the job - Couldn't get a response from the hotel via email or phone at all and I contacted them multiple times, multiple days. I finally read a review to check my spam folder and saw the key code confirmation email. Room was decent with comfortable beds and a nice bathroom. The main common area was left open so you can hang out. Breakfast was quite basic. One of the bathroom sinks in the hotel lobby bathroom had brown running water. Good for a quick one night stay if you don't require hotel service.
- George (4/5): Meh it's ok, I expected better for the price - Positive: Once you pay for your room, you get a email conformation with your room number and the key lock code. It's fast and easy. The room was large and had a large washroom. The beds were comfortable. The place is off the main highway, so it's nice and quiet. After along day of driving, it's nice to go to sleep here. The breakfast was free and was good. There's a gas stating down the road, so you can get food and drinks.
Negatives: I don't like writing these, but it's just the facts people. No staff except during breakfast. They advertised a flat screen TV, I got a old tube TV and only 4 channels seem to work. The wifi did not work at all. the common room was nice, but the tv didn't seem to work, the pool table was slanted. The toilet was high, I'm 5'9 and when sitting I had to tiptoe?!
- Verified traveler (6/5): economic hotel - a country side hotel, nice outlook but the room is quite old, the room wifi is not working but no staff inside the hotel can help. The closest facility and restaurant is 5 minutes drive of petrol station.
- Patrick (6/5): Make sure to check your junk folder - They send you an email with your room number and pin code and this email was sent to my junk folder so when I showed up there was about 30 mins of panic. Thankfully another guest let me use his hotspot since the hotel wifi was really spotting and eventually found the info necesary so that I could get into my room since there is no hotel staff on duty except for when they serve breakfast in the morning.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Had problems checking in. The phone number left at the desk did not reach anyone. In the 2 hours it took to solve this 8 different groups came in with the same problem. Hotel.com also had issues with reaching a staff member
- Verified traveler (4/5): Run down hotel with no staff on site to hel. - We booked the room for the same night on Expedia at 1800, it was confirmed and we drove over arriving around 2030. There were no staff there to greet us or check in. We phoned the two phone numbers given to check in and both were busy. Other guests said it had been busy since 1500. There was an email on the voicemail and we sent an email to them but it was an automatic reply saying they were on vacation. We found 2 more email addresses and 2 more phone numbers, all with no answer to them. Eventually I found a random 4th email address with help from other guests who had similar issues, and got a hold of someone. They sent me an email with my room number and the code to the box holding the key. We were stranded in the lobby for 2.5 hours after being up since 0530 that day. If a hotel is selling me room after check in I should be able to access that room right away. I have emailed them to get answers but nothing yet. They promised flat screen TV's but it was not even close to it. The hotel was falling apart in the area we stayed in.
- David (2/5): Terrible experience - When I arrived, I found out my room had been double booked and given to someone else. I had to sleep on a couch in the lobby. The hotel was unstaffed and EXTREMELY hard to reach on the phone. The woman who answered was incredibly rude and impatient, and hung up on me without trying to help at all. Worst experience I've ever had with a hotel.
- Ryan (2/5): Hotel takes money, provides no room - North Star failed to provide me with a hotel room once I arrived at their hotel. They overbooked it, as every room was filled. The room that they said would be mine was already taken. They were very disorganized, and did not seem to know who to talk to or what to do next. Eventually, they just said good luck and left me to my own devices. Because they did not have a room for us, we had to keep driving a few more hours through the night. And although they answered their emails the next we had problems, when I asked for a refund of our reservation money (we pre-paid), they said it was against their policy, and couldn't refund it. It is a very nice looking hotel with a decent price, but based on the service and the money that was taken from us, I can't recommend it to anyone, unless you like being stranded without a room in Iceland, and like having money taken in exchange for no services.
- Anthony (8/5): A little wierd but nice place - It was a strange check in process no staff but the overall experience was fine. Nice breaky
- DS (8/5): - Not close to any city/town services so be prepared. Great views!!
- Rob (4/5): Self check-in doesn't work here - The Hotel appears clean and comfortable, but when you walk in there is a phone provided with a number to call for self check-in. You need to speak to someone to get your room number and code to access the room key. After 2 hours of calling with no answer and no way to leave a message we finally gave up. Some guests had received their code through email, but us and four other guests had not. If it weren't for the maintenance staff living next door, we would have not gotten into our pre-paid room. He would have let us in sooner but he said the owner threatened to fire him the last time. Obviously it's an ongoing issue. Out of 10 accommodations that we stayed at in Iceland, this one rated last. The other issue, was wifi was not working in our room and the tv also did not work, but these I cared little about.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect hotel, the best in our trip in Iceland - The common areas are really nice, room clean, breakfast included and thé, café available at any time.
- marc (8/5): Close to gas/grocery - The hotel has self check in which is a first for me. Each room has a lock box outside the door and they send you a code to open it to get the key. the hotel is located conveniently close to gas station and grocery.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good budget stay in the north west of Iceland. - It is an ideal affordable stop on highway in the north west of Iceland. Sadly it is not very close to any of the "big" attractions.
Ideas for improvement would be a more personal service, wifi that works in the room and working lightbulbs in the bathroom.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Hotel in the middle of nowhere - The hotel is literally located in the middle of nowhere. During our stay, we did not see a single other person in the hotel which made an otherwise nice hotel seem like a scene from a scary movie. The emptiness of the building is what made our experience here eerie and uncomfortable.
- Hailey (2/5): A risky little spot to book - Reservation was lost, management not on-site, unclear if we had purchased breakfast or not but no one was there to clarify for us anyway, hotel was very difficult to find, only a bottle of handsoap left in the bathroom for shower use.
We are very low-maintenance and easy to please. Walking through waist-high hay in the pitch black night to knock on the door of a man who may or may not have been the hotel's housekeeper in order to get access to a room that we paid for a month in advance fell outside of our comfort level.
Be sure to follow up ASAP after booking to confirm all of your details and get access to your room. We did this and were assured that an email had been sent with our key code information. We called from another hotel in Iceland and again were assured the email was sent. We never received which led to the aforementioned scenario on the night of our reservation.
- Chris (8/5): Easy to find - Convenient place to stay just off the Ring Road, we had a good nights sleep.
- Joseph (8/5): Convenient, no-frills hotel right off route 1 - Overall the hotel was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone traveling in Iceland. It is VERY convenient to 1 (the ring road) and I loved the self check in/out procedures. We arrived very late so it was nice to just go directly to your room and not have to worry about someone being at the desk. The only issue we had was the heat in the room was not working properly, so it was a bit chilly. Also breakfast is way over-priced (even for Iceland). Do yourself a favor and go down to the N1 for a better deal.
- Shannon (8/5): Good stopping place before heading to west fjords - I saw many negative reviews prior to my stay because it is self check-in. I had no issues with this at all. I received an email well in advance with instructions on how to get a key to my room. It went very smoothly. The place was clean and a good stopping point for our trip on the ring road before heading into the West Fjords. The only downside I saw, was it would have been nice for the pool cues and balls to be available to use the pool table. This wasn't a big deal though. I would stay there again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Strange experience - I'm not sure how we ended up in this place, but it was by far the strangest hotel experience I've had (though technically it's a guest house). Not to say we didn't enjoy it for its strangeness if not for comfort. There's no staff on site for check-in so we let ourselves in after communicating with the staff by phone to get a code for the key. Rolling up, it felt a little desolate and dark on a hill overlooking the highway. Our room had two twin beds which weren't comfortable, but the room warmed up quickly. We decided the furniture style was Florida circa 1980s; unfortunately there was no Wifi in the room, and we didn't bother with the TV. The communal area where we could access Wifi was dark and we didn't want to make noise to disturb other guests so we didn't linger. We did sleep in the next day and missed the breakfast by a few minutes; the door was closed and all was quiet again so we had breakfast at the N1 restaurant / gas station down the hill - convenient, since it seems to be the only restaurant for many miles around. We had dinner there the night before too and the food was good and the place packed full of people. All in all it was just a really strange experience which we chalked up to being unfamiliar with Iceland guest houses.
- Narayanan (6/5): Okay room, wonderful scenery around! - Okay room, clean bathroom, awesome scenery around, non-existent service. Self-checking. I had not received the code for the keys and ringing phone at the desk was futile attempt for half an hour. Luckily, all the pain to check in was rewarded when we got awesome northern lights display!
- Verified traveler (6/5): imaginary wifi - pretty good except the "free wifi"? yeah, that's only in the lobby. so if you need to check email or whatever, you cannot do it from your room.
- Virginie (6/5): A little disappointing with NO service - There's literally no service. We stuggled with finding our room for a little while and couldn't reach anyone on phone number provided (I discovered then that trip advisor had a few similar reviews). Although we eventually figured it out, the room was very cold when we got in as all heating was off. Again no drama as the heater warmed up pretty quick (I guess just over an hour). But like the temperature, it all just felt a bit cold. We were there only for a few hours, exhausted from the day and just wanted to go to bed and it was clean, so all in all we didn't mind the place. Didn't try breakfast. The lounge area seemed nice (pool table) but was lifeless when we got in. Really not that bad, but price felt high for having absolutely NO service and no atmosphere, just clean beds and bathroom in fact. Sadly this all let the place down compared to all other hotels on our trip.
- patricia (6/5): Nice space - The shower was not made properly. The guard around the shower did not hold back the water. So when the shower was done you squeezed for ten minutes and still had a wet bathroom. Loved the room and space. Nice area but nothing really around. Ate at the n1
- GAURAV (8/5): It was beautiful outside... - The hotel has a self check in process, they send you details by email including the room number after booking online. It was very simple, there is a small box along side the door of the room, there is a code to open the box and you will find the key inside. There is also breakfast available which we did not know about at the time of booking. It was challenging to find the hotel by GPS we had in the car. Prepare your instructions as it is not exactly in Hvammastangi, it is around 32 miles from it.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice , and quiet independent if staff - Nice hotel modern and brand new, quite and clean , nobody at reception therefore we can say if the staff is nice jeje
- Heather (2/5): Discourteous and unprofessional - Arrivedlate, but apparently they only have a 5 hour check in which you have to do yourself, IF you happen to have internet in the middle of Iceland. They say they are in Hvangammi, but they re actually 40 minutes south of that, and so if you are using maps, instead of GPS, you may get lost. But don't expect the hotel to care if you show up late. They won;t answer the phone to help you check in even though your room is FULLY paid for. They stole my money and did nothing to call me or contact me to be sure I would be able to check in. Robbed. In addition, I had to stay in my car in their parking lot with my friend and drive to the next place with no sleep. Ruined the next day for me. I can't believe they have no way to check you in after hours if you don't have a phone/internet available.
