Guest Reviews
- Melanie (8/5): We stayed two nights. We enjoyed our stay and might return for one night, but for a longer stay we’ll choose a different - This was an excellent location for us, and the staff were friendly, professional, and helpful. The beds were comfortable and the shower was very good. The freezer in the fridge was excellent. The room was quiet. Parking was easy. Our room was hot when we arrived and it took about 2 hours to cool it to a comfortable temperature. The wood stairs and decks need some minor maintenance like restraining. The chair in our room was uncomfortable. The pool was very clean, but extremely small.
- Regina (9/5): Good - It Was nice and clean and the staff were very kind and helpful The Room was a lot smaller than we thought it would be for the price we paid. We also had a not working TV which did get somewhat fixed. Unfortunately, it kept restarting all night, about every 15 mins.
- Jennifer (10/5): Fantastic -
- F5412LUrichardp (10/5): Best Place to stay in the Black Hills - excellent clean and comfortable family run motel. Convinent in town Location Nice Beds Mostly remodeled comfortablerooms /bathrooms. room front parking. free fast wifi.
- Dianne (10/5): - Clean room quiet very nice people
- Foster (10/5): Great and will probably be back next year. - Location was nice and convenient. Great customer service. We didn't experience any issues.
- 698rachelleb (10/5): Very Nice! - We loved staying here! The location was perfect and the room was very nice. Perfectly clean, updated and also very roomy! The owners are super nice and welcoming. They kept us well supplied in coffee! Will stay here again for sure if I get to come back to the Black Hills.
- Paul (10/5): - The entire interior was new.
Very quiet. Cool amenities such as bbq(s) multiple.
Staff is amazing!! I needed a park pass printed and the nice lady at the front desk printed it right up (after helping with formatting it).
I booked the same day as arrival and she sent me my room entry code via text. Although her text was clear, I was tired and misread it. I called at 9:30 pm, she walked me through getting in and couldn’t have been nicer.
Also, the Inn is right across the street from a great supermarket and the price of the room was fantastic.
Super stay and a wonderful property!!
- Jennifer (10/5): Love the black hills - Great place to stay. Very friendly owners
- Lynda (9/5): Great small hotel in a great location, definitely a good value - highly recommend - A little gem close to Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore. Room and bathroom were small but clean and comfortable with nice colors and finishes. The couple that own the motel were very nice ... and free coffee in the lobby. We were happy to support a small family owned property. Great value and centrally located near attractions and food. The bathroom sink was the smallest one i've ever seen! But we made it work :)
- Y7901RMemilyv (10/5): Will be staying here again ✨ - Amazing guest experience. Friendly staff, very clean room and property. Plenty of parking for truck and trailer. Knowledgeable about the area. Oh and a very comfortable mattress!!
- JillintheCountry (10/5): Perfect place to stay while enjoying the Black Hills - 5 Stars! Our stay was great and the owners were on site and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. We were traveling with our club and booked most of their rooms. We were in town to do trail riding on our UTVs. The location was perfect. The rooms weren’t huge but they were comfortable and had everything we needed. I would definitely come back and recommend Lantern Inn to friends.
- Virginia (10/5): - Clean. Quiet, good value, nicely decorated, walking distance to Main St.
- Linda (10/5): - We were bicycling cross country and the staff was great to work with!
- Y3869MFmarkg (10/5): Awesome place to stay! - Classic Motor Inn vibe! Small hotel in the heart of Hill City. This was our third time staying at Lantern Inn. Rooms are always clean and comfortable. Conveniently located within walking distance of downtown shops and restaurants. Due to its central location both north and south black hills attractions are easily accessible for day trips. Owners are on site and have a great knowledge of the area and are very helpful…….also make a great cup of coffee! How many hotels can say that these days. This is our go to place to stay when motorcycling. Convenient off road parking for truck and trailer.
- Patricia (8/5): - Across the street from a nice grocery
- Tina (8/5): - The room was very clean and the hosts were very friendly. I did not like that our room did not have a window it felt kind of like being in a cell it was small but again very clean and I would stay again. I am not fond of Hill City there is not much to do here but it is close to area attractions. Nothing to do at night.
- MICHAEL (10/5): - driveway is not easy to see. Watch for the sign and turn quickly
- Tamra (8/5): Great value - The motel was dated but that’s what gave it its charm. Very clean & orderly. I would def go back
- Sherry (10/5): - Cute cozy inn in a very convenient location. The bed was wonderful and room was very clean. Would definitely stay there again.
- SheriJ2006 (10/5): Wonderful accommodations! Very clean, nicely updated, and wonderful owners!!! - My husband and I were there on an anniversary motorcycle trip to the Black Hills area. We stayed three nights, it was amazing!!! Great location! Our room was VERY clean, nicely updated and had thoughtful details like USB port o the nightstand, room darkening curtains, and a nice coffee maker with timer on it ;) The owner Laura was so accommodating and made us feel right at home while we were there! The outdoor of the property was wonderfully landscaped with beautiful flowers as well as a nice picnic/barbecue area. Great place to stay in the Black Hills, we will definitely be back!!!!!
- joanneb435 (10/5): The Lantern Inn is the perfect place to stay - My husband and I stayed 3 nights and were very pleased. Room was exceptionally clean and plenty of space. Temps were in the 90's and the air conditioner kept the room nice and cool! The refrigerator in the room worked great and the freezer kept our cold packs frozen. Which is rare for a hotel room frig! Beds and pillows were very comfortable and the bedding was of good quality. Nice white and crisp! The towels were nice and fluffy. The pool looked very nice and clean. BUT...the best part about the Lantern Inn are the owners. They are a young couple who totally refurbished the Inn and made it new again. Julie and Nick were welcoming and always made sure we had everything we needed. Our car had some problems and needed to be towed. Julie looked around and found a tow company. Even offered to come and get us! There is a grocery store directly across the street which came in handy to get fresh deli sandwiches and other items to take with is everyday when touring the area. We had an emergency back home which caused us to cut our trip short. Julie was so kind and caring.
- Cindy (8/5): - This worked out great for your group of 7 couples! We were all able to “hang out” at the end of the day. Fire pit area was nice also.
- Roger (10/5): -
- Brenda (8/5): -
- Robert (10/5): - Rooms are clean, comfortable, and a good central local. Definitely would stay again.
- Marjorie (10/5): - Wonderful stay! Amazing location, great room!
- Keith (10/5): - Very clean and friendly
- Jessica (10/5): - We spent two nights at the Lantern Inn and loved every minute! With the pool and the availability of a charcoal grill, we made dinner in the yard there while the kiddos enjoyed swimming. Staff was wonderful!
- J3694GGjohnnyp (10/5): Great! - Great place to stay, I would go back. Smaller place real personal, The staff took good care of us & friendly. You can Grill if you wanted to sit around with your friends they had tables and umbrellas.
- James (10/5): Easy access - 10 out of 10 I’ll stay there again.
- F5412LUrichardp (10/5): The best Place to Stay in the Black Hill!! - We have stayed at The Lantern Inn a few times During the Sturgis Rally. It is a Clean, well maintained hotel and the owners couldn't be nicer or more willing to help in any way. It is located in Hill City not far from restaurants, hiking trails, and black hills attractions. You will never Regret choosing The Lantern Inn.
- Carl (10/5): - Excellent location. Short drive to everything. Easy walk to downtown Hill City. Friendly staff, clean and nicely appointed room. I would absolutely stay here again and I highly recommend.
- Peter (10/5): - The inn was conveniently located and reasonably priced as compared to similar properties in that local. The room was clean and quiet, however if you’re looking for a luxury, full service resort, look elsewhere.
- helmi (10/5): Geweldig - Zwembad

- Carmen (9/5): Superb - The friendliness of the staff, the ease of booking, the location and a clean and comfortable room.
- jsm28np (10/5): Wonderful, peaceful setting - Loved our accommodations at Lantern Inn for a three night stay, room #17. Home base for numerous area attractions (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer state park, Keystone, Hill City, Rapid City). We actually drove to Devils Tower too. We loved our room, especially because it was so clean and numerous amenities (refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave, excellent A/C). Plus we felt safe while staying at Lantern Inn, my husband loved that he could park his truck in front of our door. Very peaceful setting, quiet and no noise from outside activities, deer roam on the property too. Owners are friendly and helpful. We would definitely return for a stay when we return to South Dakota (we want to visit Badlands NP and Wall Drugs). There are many others places to stay, but did my research on Trip Advisor and all other reviews are correct, truly a lovely, peaceful stay.
- GayLynn (10/5): - Wonderful stay! Thank you!
- Steve (8/5): - Great hosts. Small little property. Recently remodeled. Small clean rooms. Not the Hilton, but great location for exploring the Black Hills.
- connieg280 (10/5): Best place in Hill City and surrounding area! - This was the best place! Everyone was so friendly and the owners are the best. It felt like staying with family, especially when a bunch sat around a bon fire in the parking lot!!! Would tell anyone to stay here and will only stay here in the future!!
- Beth (10/5): - The sheets were bright white, and the bed was comfortable.
- Olga (3/5): Poor - Friendly staff Dirty towels, super loud air-conditioner, tiny bathroom
- X3806DZchelseag (10/5): Great stay in the black hills! - Very clean, nicely renovated and welcoming vibe! The pool was awesome, my kids loved it and the owners were so friendly and made our experience one we won’t forget! Will be staying here again 100%. The location was perfect too, so central to all the things we wanted to do as a family. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Daniel (10/5): - friendly service, told you up front that they would not be entering your room unless you needed service. small but perfect rooms.
- Sheldon (9/5): Superb - Very clean. Liked having multiple surfaces for belongings. Bathroom was very small, but okay.
- G7775JBaustinb (10/5): Great place to stay - Very accommodating, clean and well maintained. It also helped that it was walking distance to all the shops and attractions.
- VaLynda (10/5): - Owners were very friendly. Supplied a fan for my grandson to use. Pool was very clean. Accessible to walk to downtown Hill City.
- Culture40654442540 (8/5): Thumbs up - It was nice it had a microwave and refrigerator. A/C worked great, nice location. Only downfall was the pool wasn't ready yet, otherwise it was a pleasant experience.
- Brady (10/5): - Owners are super friendly. Property is very clean and located near the Mickelson Trail. We thought the price was a great value!

Hidden Gem Alert!
We loved our stay at the Lantern Inn! From the moment we arrived, it felt like a home away from home. The family that runs the place is incredibly warm and welcoming—seriously, they thought of everything we could possibly need.
The pool? Absolutely perfect. Clean, refreshing, and a total hit with the kids (and us too!). After a swim, it was an easy stroll downtown where we discovered charming local coffee shops, cute boutiques, and great spots to eat. Plus, having a grocery store nearby made our stay super convenient.
If you're looking for comfort, location, and genuine hospitality, this is the place. Already planning our next trip back! 🏊♀️☕🛍️🛏️
- Jeremy (10/5): - Clean room and the property itself were well maintained. Close and convenient to all things in Hill City. Staff were friendly as well. My only knock on the room was the walls were a bit thin as I could sometimes hear the tenants in the room next to mine. However, I never heard them enough to bother or inconvenience my experience at the Lantern Inn. I'd definitely consider staying there again on my next visit to the Black Hills.
- Jenny (8/5): - Cute resort and
- E5132BZbonnier (10/5): Clean…enjoyed our time here - We were very pleased with both rooms. They were very clean. Although they are very small they were functional. Two comments, 1) the room needs a luggage rack; 2) two bars of soap. One for the shower and one for hand washing. My husband had an extra bar in his travel bag. So we were ok. But, would have liked a second bar provided. The check-in was great and the staff were wonderful. We would definitely stay here again! Thank you for a comfortable stay.
- cathX5583MG (10/5): Perfect place - Always my go to place to stay. Sooo clean and quiet. I’ve been staying here for over 15 years. The owners are hands on and so sweet 🌻pricing is unbelievable. And not to forget the sweetest pup. Would and do recommend 10 out of 10. Perfect spot to stay if you want to spend a few days touring the Black Hills
- 460rachellec (10/5): Great place to stay - We had many choices to choose from to stay for our daughters wedding. We chose Lantern Inn and we are so happy we did!! From day one Laura was very accommodating and attentive to our all our needs. The room was very clean, upgraded, and comfortable. We would highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed!
- K5109FHsarahc (10/5): Clean, cute, and very convenient location. - Perfect for a quick overnight stay. If you are looking for something simple and just need a place to sleep this is it. - Colo01 (10/5): The Gem of Hill City - Visit SD 4-5 times a year. First time staying in Hill City. Saw this place on the web and they have great reviews. So I booked for two nights (Friday and Saturday) Check in was smooth with no issues. Room 22 was cleaned and nicely laid out. Two double beds separated by a small offset wall. Room had a AC, small fridge and microwave. Bathroom was good size and clean. Plenty of hot water with good pressure.
You can check out the rooms on line prior to booking.
Grounds were clean and well maintained. Pool was closed for the winter. (36 degrees) Saturday morning.
Was able to walk to town for breakfast and shopping both days. (12 minute walk.) Local grocery store right across the street.
Husband and wife own and operate the Inn. Talked to both for a few minutes. Very nice couple. Offered to supply information about the surrounding area if needed.
The location is very close to Needles Highway and Custer State Park.
Overall a great stay at a great place and would definitely stay again.

- Susan (10/5): - Very nice local motel. Owners on site very nice and other guests friendly too. Great central location for exploring the Black Hills. Sweet dog too.
- Laura (7/5): Room comfortable but small. Good location and kind staff. - Good location, clean room, kind staff and liked the keypad entry to the room. We were assured there was adequate parking for our truck and trailer but when we arrived, the parking was in a grassy area with a significant decline that just didn’t work for our trailer so we had to figure out off site parking.
- Phillip (8/5): Very good -
- Olga (8/5): An old style mountain city motel, family run, and neweverything made fresh and new - location snd friendly staff. everything new and fresh inside the rooms.
- Anthony (8/5): - Nice clean rooms, outdoor pool for the kids was clean and great, ac for the room was a little under powered and noisy but beaides that would definitely stay again for the price and location!
- Rebecca (10/5): Exceptional - We loved it
It was so close to my Parents house
- lmb7257 (10/5): Clean and Comfortable - Very clean rooms!! Bed comfortable. Wanted something central and Hill City fit the bill. Would stay again. Nice area. Thanks for everything. Hosts very accommodating and willing to work with us when changes came up unexpectedly. Thanks again!
- Sightseer37705232825 (10/5): Hidden gen of an Inn - Great little hidden gem of an inn located in a quiet town in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Family owned and run. The owners were wonderful and welcoming. We will be returning here on our next pass through South Dakota. Love the peaceful environment by a little creek.
- Candace (8/5): - Very basic and clean property. I want to thank the young man who was looking after the place while his family was away. He was very young for this responsibility but he tried very hard to help his customers!
Small rooms and a refreshing small pool after a long hot drive.
- LaJeanB (10/5): Def. will be returning... - There are many places to stay in the Black Hills, but this place is just like being with family ( if you like your family)... you're not just a number on their chart... they'll do anything to make your stay GREAT.... This place is situated in the heart of everything. We USED to stay here(30 years) but Charlie and Jeannet sold out... we were NOT impressed with the new owner, but he sold out and now with this wonderful family, it's lite home again... neat and CLEAN.
- Ken (10/5): Great place to stay! - Felt like a nice cozy place to stay. Hosts were super friendly and can't complain about anything.
- Kelly (10/5): - Lantern Inn was so wonderful. What a cute and locally run Inn. The owners are super nice and the property is great. Rooms are clean and have everything you need, location is great with places that are within walking distance. Hill city is a cozy little town and in middle of the places we went. Great great location for visit Mt Rushmore or Custer state park. Equal distance to rapid city as well. I will definitely book here again.
