Guest Reviews
- Bernard (8/5): Having stopped i wouldn't have any problem going back. - A good well presented English breakfast plenty of coffee.
A good location easy reach to the beach plenty of shops and restaurants. Only problem was the door to shower which didn't open enough even though there was room for adjustment.
- Derek (8/5): - Good location nice breakfast and parking.
- Guest (1/5): - As above Shocking wouldn't stop there with a gang of lads

- Trevor (3/5): Very Average -
- danel (10/5): - very helpfull good breakfast very clean room good service
- Chris (1/5): Stay away - Location Well it’s cheap for a reason. I’ve stayed in some bad hotels but this is definitely in that category. Dirty room. Shower minging and must be the smallest space I’ve showered in. No tea or coffee. Room stunk of damp. Two sharing and had to shuffle past each other. Bed not comfy. One pillow the thickness of a wafer. Breakfast well all I can say the toast was decent. Cooked breakfast well wasn’t cooked. Decor in dire need of upgrade I would definitely not recommend this to anyone. Not even the homeless.
STAY WELL CLEAR.
- Derek (5/5): Passable - Breakfast and location Very dated room no curtains damp walls and a leak in the bathroom.
- Pete (5/5): Good location, helpful staff. - The owner, John and the staff are really helpful. The location is good, and there was plenty of parking for the scooters. The rooms were clean, but they are starting to look at little tired.
- Sabina (10/5): - Owner and staff were very friendly, close to the beach and big room.
- Howitt (6/5): Stay was OK, could be better - Breakfast was nicely cooked.
Shower worked perfectly
Room was as expected in terms of having sea view. No tea or coffee was in the room when it was advertised as having so. The shower was a bit under pressure. Beds mattress was uncomfortable do had to improvise by laying some of the towels supplied on top to ease the uneasy feel of the mattress springs. Some guests had kids who were running around the hotel unsupervised. The proprietor wasn't aware of my attendance as I had to fully explain what I came for, and he seemed a bit lost. Was at first given twin room on back, but once I addressed the booking again being a sea view room, he had kindly swapped it for me.
Hotel in general could do with a refurbishment or re decoration in rooms as looked dated.
- Shaina (9/5): Superb - Location is really good and worth for money.
Breakfast was also very good.
- Christopher (8/5): fine cheap and comfortable accomadation - homly accomadation nothing really
- Jiban (10/5): Exceptional -
- Collette (9/5): Very enjoyable and good location - Staff were really friendly and welcoming. Lovely garden and good views. Kettle wasn’t near a plug
- Joe (5/5): Passable - It was clean. Not much about this hotel was to sing about, other than the manager/owner tried their best and it was clean.
We were doing a long walk and was happy to find anywhere that was dry and had a bed. The owner, the only person we saw throughout, had major on going health issues. Although we admired his fortitude, trying to run a large, high maintenance hotel would be demanding for younger person. In the nicest possible way it would be better for all concerned if the manager /owner retired.
- Renjith (10/5): - Overwhelmed by the friendly staffs and atmosphere.
- Sheila (3/5): Poor - Very dated inside, pillows were a complete waste of time (flat and cheap) and the bedroom was too small for a double. Being refused orange juice at breakfast was shocking.. apparently it was only for children! Sausages were cheap and nasty, toast was half done and cold...Wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone and certainly won't be visiting again!
- Karen (8/5): Very good -
- Sajin (9/5): Superb -
- Philip (5/5): Passable - Comfortable bed. We were the only two people there as to say booking.com said it was fully booked up.
- Brikena (3/5): Poor -
- Susan (4/5): Hols - Breakfast was basic but nice, good service from the manager and staff. Room was very cold, had to have an oil heater as there was no heating, very basic, room needs very much updating
- Bhargav (4/5): Disappointing - Location No water facility
- Karen (5/5): Passable - The owner was wonderful, so pleasant and helpful. The room was poor and smelled musty really in need of update. The bathroom was very poor. The beds were comfortable.
- Adrian (5/5): Passable -
- Russell (5/5): Breakfast was lovely but served very early - IT’s location Rooms very outdated
- Aki (6/5): Pleasant -
- Andrew (7/5): Cheap and cheerful - Location and large car park Dated interior
- Neil (5/5): Adequate - Okay Very dated
- Louise (8/5): Great location, great staff and great breakfast! - The breakfast was excellent - as long as you liked the full English - couldn't fault it. The cereal options were a bit basic - cornflakes or Weetabix, we didn't use these so couldn't comment further as to whether we could state a preference for anything else. Breakfast, was hot, fresh and had a ready supply of toast.
The staff were very friendly. John (the owner?), as other people have stated in the comments could seem a bit terse/abrupt, but I didn't have a problem with his manner - once you knew what to expect and took him as you found him, he was a lovely man and was happy to help. I asked for an additional pillow and found we all had one by the time we got back that evening.
The room was, rustic/quirky. I personally didn't have a problem with it and would be happy to stay again - it all depends on your expectations, some people may find it too basic, but I thought it was fine. The bed was very comfortable, plenty of space in the room and lots of storage in our room: a wardrobe, chest of drawers and a three drawer bedside table - more than when I've stayed at 4 star hotels!
Close to beach and high street and other attractions to just a short drive away.
The car-park was also a bonus! The shower wasn't very powerful and not too stable - usable, but could have been better.
- Mark (1/5): Bad - Nothing Everything
- Beesley (8/5): Very enjoyable despite the weather at times. - Friendly staff treated us like family rather than clients Limited but understandable bar options. No covered smoking area or ashtray.
- Darren (9/5): Superb - Was just up the road from all the entertainment in town, breakfast was spot on, staff we're very helpful and happy to help, nice location had sea view room. Come and go when you want and parking on site.
- Shihan (8/5): Worth every penny - Breakfast was awesome 👌
John was brilliant 👏 The weather was wet
- Anonymous (10/5): Just excellent! - It was clean, in a good location and the owner went above and beyond. I liked it all!
- Joseph (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sophia (10/5): excellent value and service for a memorable first stay on the Isle of Wight! - John was an incredibly gracious and attentive host. I fell asleep to the sound of waves and woke to the sound of chirping birds. what a hidden gem! breakfast was filling and delicious. this is a basic but comfortable and good value hotel and we will be staying there again in the future. location was also perfect near downtown Sandown and the beach.
- Kariuki (5/5): okay - the breakfast was awesome.
- Rahul (7/5): Extended weekend stay in Sandown - 1. We have got the sea view rooms, though the views were obstructed as like the pics.
2. Stuffs were very good, specially John. He is full of humour.
3. Also, hotel’s reception/lobby is fantastic, you literally can spend hours sitting there. 1. Rooms and specially toilets should need a bit repair work.
2. Breakfast times are from 8-8.30, which should be changed. Most of the people are coming for holidays and shouldn’t be rush for breakfast in the morning.
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional host and great building - Lovely location
owner goes above and beyond
Great breakfast
Relaxing Garden
Great views nothing
- Gi (7/5): Good -
- Linda (10/5): All round excellent - would recommend for a first class stay. - Excellent breakfast nicely presented - staff very friendly and efficient - very obliging - grandson loved the eggs ! Nothing not to like - exactly the opposite in fact.
Tired children offered very welcome ice lolly on arrival and the fish in the entrance hall provided lots of interest to us all - Nanny and 3 grandchildren 10,3,6 years of age.
Spacious bedrooms and run of the house and great garden with trampoline - indoor skittles and chess also.
Fabulous shower and comfortable clean beds and plenty of towels etc.
Very pleasant and informative host - a real pleasure all round.
Very close to lovely beach and good shopping and bus service.
- Mark (8/5): after reading negative views I was really surprised how clean & tidy the place was.Yes it may be a little dated but - very friendly, helpful staff & a great location. only a 45 minute slot for breakfast
- Danny (6/5): Pleasant -
- Donna (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Moshtaqhosin (4/5): below expectations - close to the beach comfortable bed the toilet and shower very cramped the ceiling was mould y
- Hassell (5/5): ok - great location short walk to beach shops and pier. two beds pushed together to make double. and felt although had to tiptoe past 9 pm.
- Luutu (4/5): not good beds and room to low in height - ancient exterior appearance bad attic room with slanted roof.
- Anonymous (7/5): the rooms are in need of decorating and the room upstairs need a lift to accommodate guests with disabilities or guests - family friendly and accommodating e no lifts or staff to take our heavy suits cases up the flights of stairs
rooms were also very dusty and downstairs lobby was full of cibwebs
- Richard (4/5): glad to pack bags and leave - ???? shower was poor
wallpaper peeling from walls
little to no choice at breakfast
en-suite was to small
in room facilities where poor
- Jason (6/5): Thanks for having us. - We had nice full English breakfast every morning. My kids loved the trampoline in the garden. It's near the sundown beach. We are grateful that we get the room at 10 pm after having unpleasant problem to check in with the original hotel we booked. It wasn't our first choice. The room was small for the five of us.
- Joanne (6/5): a warm welcome and you get what you pay for. Say no more. John was lovely. free drinks from the bar for the kids and big - John and the staff were very welcoming! Needs updating!
- Sam (7/5): Good - Good Can't ask for more.
- Titus (8/5): Very good - Nice All good
- Gharti (8/5): Essential stuff in place - Children liked the Bunk Bed. Fan fir hot weather. Good wifi Wall papers,,, Tiny bathroom, shower tap.
- Asha (9/5): Superb -
- Ngadi (8/5): Very good -
- Annmarie (8/5): friendly welcome, relaxed communal areas, perfect location for amusements, beach, food, shops as all 5min walk from hote - John the owner of hotel very helpful and friendly (our tv in room didn’t have remote control so he went and bought and had installed a new tv the following morning). cooked breakfast was right portion size and cooked well. hotel lounge/tv room great! in rear garden there is x2 person swing chair and large trampoline which my son used everyday and made friends with other children staying at hotel. always had a parking space in hotel car park and John would move his vehicle if needed. sandy beach, restaurants, shops, amusement pier all within 5-10min walk the decor throughout, room facilities and furniture needs updating. communal staircases and room carpets to be replaced.
- Krishna (7/5): 260 - Location and breakfast well enough According to hotel they free wifi but wifi not reachable to room.wi fi network was completly non.
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- A (3/5): Poor - We only like costumer service Nothing else’s we like all hotels dumped and bed mattress was very cheap and quality of was very poor. Our kids couldn’t sleep all night.
- Manuel (5/5): Passable -
- Stuart (2/5): - Place run down ,staff never there, breakfast not to good,
Wait 5mins of cold water , no clean towels and had to make your own bed
- Mihai (10/5): - All good
- Verified traveler (4/5): overprice but underrated. - The bathroom door could not be locked from inside. There is no ventilation in the toilet so after finishing the business, the bad smell could not escape apart from the main window of the room. The hot water in the sink was not working.
- Tanya (6/5): - You get what you pay for.
Staff is super nice and friendly.
Room not so great. Very out dated. Bathroom extremely outdated. Tv never worked at all.
Breakfast was ok. Nothing to write home about but can’t really complain either. Served its purpose.
- Maxine (6/5): - Stay was ok only because it was close to the Beach. Room was very old fashioned so was the building the room smelt of toilet and bath room needed some TLC spiders in the bathroom and room. Bed very uncomfortable with two single ones out together. Breakfast was nice but overall it needs a revamp needs seriously uodating.
- Debbie (4/5): - Was probably very pleasant in the 1980's
Everything very dated, in need of a complete face lift.
Staff very friendly though.
- Sandy (6/5): - I like the staff service. Property is not clean that much.they didnt clean the room everyday...
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice view on sea. Close to the beach& town. Lovely promenade and pier close by.
- fareeq (2/5): very bad hotel . - this hotel is nothing to say about rate too many problem there bed no good shower no good no working no Extractor Fan in toilet or bathroom dirty kettle in the rooms no healthy to use or make tea or coffee wi-fi no reach to rooms only working downstairs or public area in hotel too many spider in side room and bathroom . this hotel need refurbishment furniture completely .
- Verified traveler (2/5): Dehumanisation and total ripoff by altavia hotel - To say these is an horrible place to stay is an understatement. To start the people here are horrible and looked down on all their guests like pest. The breakfast is horrible.the rooms are like staying i. A chicken shed as you can hear all your footsteps like you are falling through the floorings.the rooms are without bath soaps. The rooms are very dirty and filthy. The aeration is poor as the building is very old and not much work has being done to improve it.God help you if you ask the workers and especially the owner who sleeps with his workers for help as they are very proud and rude.Even though on several occasions we made it clear we have got little kids and a pregnant lady among us they still kept on making uncooked egg .very awkward toast, tiny milk, tea and coffee in a rusted pot.The kids developed stomach ache throughout our stay.Dont go to these hotel if you value life
- Diane (6/5): Desperate need of a makeover - Hotel was close to the beach and the breakfast, although very small, was fine. Unfortunately that is the only good things about this place. The hotel is very run down and in desperate need of a makeover. Our room was dirty, full of cobwebs, and there was a grubby carpet in the bathroom and a shower that barely worked. In the six nights we stayed we never had the bedding changed and no fresh towels. Fawlty Towers definitely springs to mind. I would not recommend staying here .
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok but expected far nicer - Communal lounge and dining area good, breakfast was fine. Confusion over payment of room and room moved twice from original booking. Bedroom felt far closer to a youth hostel than hotel but kind of had all you needed (except coffee as only tea available). Staff very friendly and helpful on the whole. Free parking and free wifi.
- Verified traveler (2/5): not happy at all. - The hotel is old, it smelt of damp. The bathroom was an after thought, so small that if you bent over the basement you pushed the door open allowing no privacy. The bedside lamp flashes and sparked an worked no more. The television only worked when it wanted to. We had our twin grandsons with us both of whom are autistic, so was not good for them.
- Rashid marikar (4/5): Uncomfortable - We booked two rooms(£150), Its a very old type hotel, duvet cover and towels are dark colours(to hide the poor quality) and very poor conditions. Toilet was bad condition. Wifi is very weak signal. Breakfast was worth less than a pound per head Very cheap items. Customer service was horrible. Did not have high chair for baby. I wouldn't recommend to anyone.
- Mr. A (8/5): - Comfortable place to stay - very welcoming - owner was very friendly
- Chris (8/5): Nice stay , hotel.com gave us the wrong price ! - Building is dated and is being gradually brought back up . John is a nice easy going host . I recommend staying here for a budget based stay , our room had a sea view , plenty of space , tv , bath/shower ensuite kettle ...quite comfortable .
I wasn't happy that the hotel.com confirmed a price to me and I was given a higher bill , this I think is a little unfair and should be made clear to both parties to save any awkwardness , we paid what we were asked to pay by hotel owner but it was higher than we were told by hotel.com to pay by £27/ room !
I reiterate John is a nice fella and we didn't want to cause a problem as we would like to return again !
- Verified traveler (6/5): It is what it is - The Hotel is large and close to the beach. The rooms are a good size although they are in need of modernizing. The owner is a very friendly and interesting person and he doesn't intrude. Breakfast is a very organized affair, and by ordering it in advance it's swiftly prepared with no fuss.
- Flutur (8/5): - Was amazing thx
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice hotel - close to beach/pier - Hotel was a pleasant stay - staff were nice and welcoming and had respected our additional requests. Room was okay for us provided enough room for 2 adults and 2 small children and had a basic en-suite shower and w/c.
TV wasn't working due to weak signal and room was a bit outdated/had paint smell. It did also get noisy in the night given the location. However for 1 night stay this was all very minor points for us the main thing was we all had a nights rest followed by a lovely full breakfast with a view of the sea.
Overall - a good hotel for the odd night(s) stay and we left with a smile.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - No towels was provided and kettle so we had to ask. There was no towel rail . Wi-fi reception was very poor . Not much hospitality and the welcome was cold.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Shabby and overpriced-won't be staying here again and there's plenty of choice nearby.
- Rajendra (2/5): Location fine but overall not satisfied - I'll not recommend to others. toilet is so narrow lite off and requested to fix it, someone came but couldn't. Spent overnight without proper light.
Breakfast okey but have to stick on their time 08:30.
- Usman (10/5): Altavia hotel stay with young family - I was planning to go to the Isle of Wight on holiday with my wife and two kids and the cheapest deal I could find was for the altavia hotel. But when I checked the reviews out apart from one very good one the others were very bad. I decided to take the plunge and booked anyways, and I did not regret it. I spoke to the owner, John, to book a ferry at first. He sounded very nice and got me a good discount. On arrival I was amazed at the location of the hotel as it was a few minutes walk from the beach and in the sandown town centre. John is an amazingly nice guy. When I got to the hotel quite a few rooms were empty, he showed me all of them and let me choose the one I liked. He did mention that breakfast was at 8am and he would knock at the door if we were not out by 9. Even though he never did that but this was very good for me as we got the kids to breakfast nice and early then had the whole day to enjoy instead of staying in bed till late.yes, the building is a little dated but it has recently been redone so all the old reviews about the state and condition are defunct in my opinion. If I went to Isle of Wight again, I would definitely book this hotel again. Me, the wife and our 5 and 1 year old loved our stay here. And as sandown is so close to many of the attractions in the island it was amazingly convenient.
- Shehr (8/5): - Enjoyed our stay
- Abid (8/5): our stay was fantastic we really enjoyed. - John is really caring and helpful, our stay was fantastic we really enjoyed.
- chema (6/5): Hotel familiar y curioso. Bien situado y barato
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Hotel dated
- raj (2/5): rubbish hotel to the beach - no hot water, the toilet doesnt flush when we went to the owner he said he will get someone then we waited 2 hours and then we went and asked him and he got annoyed and angry and was about to hit me we then got the police and then he said we didnt pay and lied and we got kicked out but we spoke to expedia and got our money back amd never go there.
