- Ian (7/5): - The fact that the hotel rang me later in the day of my departure to tell me I had not paid for dinner the previous evening. This I assured them that I had. I paid it that evening because I was leaving at 05.30 the next morning. After realising their mistake they apologised, but this left a nasty taste.

- Katrina (1/5): The hotel location was the best part of the stay. - The hotel is a lovely quiet location just off the M6. The hotel is in dire need of refurbishment. The bedrooms are grimy from age and wear, the bathroom is beyond tired and the floor is sticky and discoloured. I didn’t want to use the bathroom at all! The breakfast was similarly disappointing, we left as soon as possible.

- Terra (9/5): Lovely staff! - The Staff of Jamal and Clyde were exceptional. Jamal picked us up in Shap after a long day hiking coast to coast from Patterdale. Breakfast was plentiful. Clyde helped to secure taxi out. Very grateful. Pretty far out of town. Caters to coach buses of tourists enjoying the lakes district.

Good dog walking areas. At the time of booking there were no double rooms available, but on arrival we asked and were transferred to a double. Having been told the hotel was very busy and that we would need to book for the restaurant, it turned out there were 5 other tables occupied and within 20 minutes we were the only ones in the dining room. No drinks orders from the table and there was nobody at the bar. A long wait for service and the drinks had to be paid for separately.

The rain we had during the night was bouncing off the window ledge,room 105 ,there must have been a problem with the guttering, I mentioned it to the manager who is a credit to the hotel,on the morning & he said i should have told him but as it was during the night ,I didn't know,but apart from that we had a lovely stay.

- Mark (9/5): Very good overnight stay in a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting surrounded by nature & wildlife - Whole hotel is Super Clean Food is amazing Room was big, bright with a 4 poster bed Fantastic nature walks right outside the hotel (with red squirrels) Very professional & friendly staff Some of the guests, a group of contractors from the nearby motorway roadworks were staying there. They were loud, foul mouthed & obnoxious towards the hotel staff, who handled it well with patience & politeness.

Fabulous interior. Television signal weak, made watching TV impossible. Pot holes on the roads leading to hotel. Not too bad from the Shap village route, but like craters on the moon from the other route.
- David (9/5): - Long ride on motorbikes to the hotel. Perfect stop over for our journey just off A6 or M6. Good big parking area, secure and safe. Lovely welcome by reception and bar staff as we needed a pint sitting outside in the evening sun. Nice twin room with good shower and comfy beds. Evening meal was good value and nice choice of food with good service. Good night's kip followed by an excellent breakfast. Hotel has a good atmosphere and for a huge Victorian type hotel nice decor. Will definitely stay again , hopefully soon. Having to leave, wish we stayed another night.

- Yvonne (10/5): We Found A Wonderful Gem Hidden In The Countryside - The Hotel is absolutely stunning with many original features. A superb setting with red squirrels nearby, waterfalls and streams, many tall trees filled with birds and beautiful bird song. Due to the secluded nature of the property, it's wonderful to hear the sounds of the birds and the streams without the roar of traffic. The silence is marvellous,and to be able to enjoy nature at it's best is a real privilege. There is a canopy at the entrance with several tables and chairs, where we sat and had our drinks in the afternoon with no distracting traffic noise at all. Absolutely superb. Having to go home!

- Elizabeth (9/5): Peaceful location in the countryside, in a more traditional old family hotel. - Very welcoming, helpful and friendly staff despite it having been a busy day. Fitted us in for dinner. Helped when our car battery flat next day. It is a lovely setting - very peaceful and loved the squirrel viewings. Nice to have a more traditional family hotel with rustic features which took me back to childhood. We don't normally get to experience this as traditional hotels tend to be uber exclusive out of our priced range or not dog or child friendly. Made a change to stopover in a hotel instead of a chain. We were happy with our stay so wouldn't complain. I have noticed other people complain about tired furniture or the food but it was clean and met our needs.
- Fiona (7/5): A gem close to motorway in beautiful surroundings with such potential without losing charm. - Amazing location, comfortable bed and good bedroom /bathroom Jacob on reception and in restaurant as well as restaurant management in evening very well trained. Comfortable seating in a variety of lounges. A working lift good. So quiet. Usp of red squirrel walk. The staff at evening meal were efficient considering there were 3 coaches in. Sadly food over cooked. Very dry chicken. Soup very tasty and piping hot. Breakfast needs more stations for as busy as it was. Mouldy bread in basket but fried eggs cooked to perfection for my taste.

- Sally (6/5): Lovely hotel, could do with a few updates and maybe a few more staff - Room was good being on the ground floor , allowing easy access for taking out the dog! Lovely walk right outside the door , lots of red squirrels, very pretty footpaths leading to a lovely waterfall! Unfortunately the radiator in the bathroom didn’t work, no USB point in room and no glasses supplied with tea and coffee etc. We had a 30 minute wait for someone to take our evening meal order as I think they had forgotten we waiting until I asked why we hadn’t been seen! But when the food did arrive it was delicious and the waitress was a lovely lady who looked after us well. As we had a dog with us we had to eat breakfast in lounge which was unfortunately a fare way from the restaurant and having to get though the reception area that was very busy at that time of morning meant our food wasn’t hot by the time we carried it back to our table! Seemed to be very short on staff

- Tracey (7/5): Overall a good location for a stopover on the way back from Scotland to the south of England. - Peaceful location. Breakfast was good. Staff were helpful and friendly. The hotel was dog friendly although there was a separate block for people with pets. The dog went allowed in the main restaurant which was not a problem for our evening meal but at breakfast time we had quite a long walk to and from the self service buffet back to the dog friendly area.

The staff were friendly and helpful, we couldn't have asked more of them The bathroom in our room was a little outdated and could have done with a spruce up, breakfast on the first morning was a little lacking, probably due to being out of season but nice non the less

The only thing which was the pet friendly policy we was put in a room quite away from the restaurant, but for Christmas day there let us in the restaurant at the top end every one staying was please about it ,being on our own felt like Billy no mates.

I had everything I need and it was great it’s dog friendly It is visited by a lot of large coach parties (on their way to Scotland) so they arrive in large groups for breakfast which can make it busy. It’s in a tucked away corner of the Lake District but I was working near shap so this was ideal for me.
- Dean (9/5): In short, we felt like we had stepped back in time into a funny sitcom. - The location and the hotel were fasciniating, really in the middle of nowhere and with some interesting history. The staff were really pleasant, good humoured and helpful. We read quite some bad reviews over the food but decided to chance it anyway. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was simple but well done and they catered well for our 2 kids. Breakfast in the morning was lovely with a lot on offer. Filled us up before the squirrel walk! After dinner we were surprised to see a full bar and a whole orchestra at the bar playing Christmas songs! The central heating in the hall was really hot. Which made the rooms also hot. I guess they did this as the hotel was full of lovely older people who came by the coach load.

The radiator in the bedroom wasnt working.The bar didnt have thw two drinks which were listed on the menu.There was no black pudding on the breakfast.There was a short supply of orange juice and no fresh fruit.Short supply of brown sauce.

There is even a games room with snooker, pool and table tennis! The red squirrel feeding area outside is amazing too, they come so close. Highly recommended Not the hotel's fault, but it's extremely expensive to get taxis anywhere to/from the hotel. £50+ for a 20-minute drive. If you don't have your own car, try to pre-book your taxis as far in advance as possible, from the most local taxi company possible.
