Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved the bluegrass and gospel music jamboree that they had on Thursday night.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I arrived at 2:45 pm and no one there. Called staff and got answering machine. Finally left at 3:20.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The owner and the desk person were very nice but the hotel smelled of cigarettes and there was no hot water. Was told to let it run for 5 minutes and it would be fine. Let it run for 10 with nothing. Since we were going hiking it wasn’t a huge deal but a shower would have been nice.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Got there and was told I didn’t have a room computer was down showed confirmation number Didn’t matter
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Really looked promising from the outside and had lots of good reviews. Come to find out, this place caters to hikers of the Appalachian Trail which is where the good reviews come from. We ended up checking out after a few hours at a rehearsal dinner elsewhere and just driving the hour and 15 minutes home for the night because the room was so poor. Bed was squeaky and you could feel the springs underneath. Walls were stained and some in the hallway were lacking paint. The whole place including our room smelled musty and smoky. Toilet and tub need replaced or resurfaced. Both were badly stained. There was no way we could have comfortably stayed the night here. Total waste of time and money.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great historical inn. Very pretty building outside and in. The owner is super friendly and will tell you all sorts of information about the place, as he is the one that saved it and restored it. He’ll also play you a song on his restores juke box. Room was nice and clean. Air worked well. Bed was firm but comfy. Softest towels ever! Only issue was it took awhile for the shower water to get hot (maybe it was just a fluke that night), and it would be nice to have an individual coffee machine/cups in the room. Other than that, great stay.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Very run down on the interior. Beautiful on the outside. No safety locks on room doors.
- Sherry (8/5): Fun stay - This is a fun place. The host is friendly and entertaining. We plan to stay there again. Very reasonable rates.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Property owner was very kind and accommodating. He is in the process of remodeling to make it even nicer. Loved the history and the historical feel of the place. We definitely felt welcome. Room cool and clean
- James (2/5): No one at home - No one was at the desk I was unable to get a room
- Joan S (8/5): - Fun and friendly welcome at check-in. Surprise demo of 1947 juke box music by the inimitable Ella Fitzgerald. Lots of info about local area. Interesting history of Inn.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Allen is a great host.
Everything a thtu hiker needs is with throwing distance.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very interesting proprietor. Knows a lot about the area. a bit unorthodox in his approach but has a vision.
- joe (10/5): Would love to stay there again anytime. - We arrived super late. But there was someone to take care of us and provided wonderful accommodations. This place should be o. The National Historic Register! Very friendly staff and we cornered the Inn proprietor and got to hear a lot more of the history which was very cool. The town lights and decorations for the holidays made it extra special.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room was pretty tight - 2 beds, a night table, dresser and a TV. Did have a mini fridge. Bathroom & shower in particular was very small. It was comfortable enough and fine if you’re hiking, hunting or fishing the area. They have dinner & local music every Thursday that I missed unfortunately but sounds like fun. Beautiful part of Virginia too!!
- Michael (8/5): Cozy and friendly - Hotel is a nice place and I would recommend to anyone passing through. Rooms are small but clean and comfortable. Owners are very friendly and helpful with directions to areas around the area. The room are a bit dated but it adds to the experience. I would definitely stay again. The area around the hotel has a very small town charm and the creek leading in is beautiful. There is also a duck pond with a beautiful small waterfall.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Noisy uncomfortable and sketchy. The smoke detector was beeping all night because the battery was low. Got some sleep by plugging my ears.
- Peter (10/5): - A grand old place! I arrived late, and my key was sitting out for me, along with a hand-written map showing how to get to my room. Definitely an olde-timey feel to this hotel, but comfortable and secure. The plumbing could probably stand to be upgraded a bit, but really, that added to the charm. Wifi was great. Some friends were staying at a well-known hotel, which shall remain unnamed, up a nearby mountain, where there's no air conditioning! Imagine! I was VERY happy to have chosen the MacArthur Inn!
- Jeanne (8/5): Character - The Hotel was nice building with character but it could use some TLC
- Lasttime (6/5): - Water took forever to get hot, no in room phone, no hair dryer in room. Found out only 2 hair dry dryers for the entire inn.
- Joseph (6/5): Quaint but unexpected upcharge for booking online. - Quaint hotel. The staff, and especially, Allen, the owner, were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. It was a bit confusing when we asked if there would be coffee or breakfast available in the morning and did not receive a straight answer one way or the other...there wasn't so we ended up at Burger King. Not a whole lot in the immediate area within walking distance.
HEADS UP! They charged an extra $8.50 dollar fee per room (over what was stated on my hotels.com receipt) for booking through hotels.com! This took me by surprise as I have never paid this type of premium before and not been advised by hotels.com that it would be assessed. I will be following up with hotels.com to understand why this happened.
- T (8/5): - Not much in the town, but the owner was extremely personable and fun to talk to. Good place if you just need a place to stay for the night when passing through.
- Monique (10/5): Love it here - Everything was perfect upon arrival. Check in was swift and easy, and they had a bunch of recommendations of things to do and how to hike the trail. Welcoming town and friendly community. Loved my stay.
- Charles (10/5): A delightful escape from chain hotels - I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. The building is old but has great character. The room was simple but furnished with antiques giving it a home like feeling The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was clean everything worked, the towels we're soft. The desk clerk was friendly and helpful. And the climate control was good. Finally the town is nestled in the beautiful New River Valley.
- Kirk (10/5): Nice old hotel with history - I found staff was nice, the gentleman with a great mustache knew the history of the building.
I had large room, nicely done.
I look for good access - not far beyond Blacksburg, off the freeway, over the overpass bridge, right there.
I want clean rooms and linens - very nice; I want a nice comfortable bed - which I had.
Wi-Fi was very good, TV was excellent. Double pane windows meant the room was fairly quiet.
With this hotel, I was looking for an Older but Renovated Hotel with it's charm, and this had it - Very nice woodwork, great history, nice building. I had read the reviews, and there were mostly good with a couple not so. Like most old buildings, I did have to wait for the water to heat up in the morning, and there were some creaks, but overall I thought it was excellent renovated Hotel.
Another thing to consider was the price was very reasonable, and the other hotels I had on the trip at that price point were really not very good, while this one was.
- john (10/5): Lovely experience! - Absolutely loved this hotel! Our room was so pretty and cozy! The owner chatted with us at breakfast and shared some of the amazing history of the inn! We cannot wait to return and experience the music and carriage rides!
- Marie (10/5): Historic Inn - Came to Virginia for a family wedding and chose the MacArthur Inn for it's price and proximity to the wedding site. The history of the Inn and the friendliness of the staff made our stay enjoyable. Got to meet the owner who shared his knowledge of the area and the Inn and made our stay all the more special. Would have no problem staying again at the MacArthur Inn.
- Tookish Mama (4/5): Sheets were dirty! - The most alarming part of the whole experience was that the sheets had not been changed. One set had blood on them and the other had crumbs and a foul odor. The room smelled strongly of food odors. There were insufficient towels.
- Angela (10/5): Awesome stay! - What an amazing place to stay. The history in the building is awesome.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Pretty Good - The owner was quite lovely.
- anthony (8/5): unique and charming - The rooms, lobby, and dining area had the rustic charm of a past generation. Some signs of age showed like the paint on the ceiling, but that's part of the charm. Alan (sp?) was very cool, had to stay up late for me and another late arrival, and shared interesting info about the hotel and the area. Really a good experience. Would like to come back if passing through that way again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): visit - gentlemen;
whom runs the Hotel was very friendly and accommodating!
- Eldridge (2/5): Scary experience - might be good for Halloween! - House of horrors! There is only so much that fresh paint can cover up. Upon check in, I was given a fob with two keys - I asked what the second key was for and was told that was a key to the outside door for "after hours". The door handle and security latch to my room were of closet door quality - definitely not very secure. The cable TV in my room did not work, as most channels were jumpy and unwatchable. No drinking cups in the bathroom, and no bath mat. The toilet seat was not level, and the sink looked like it would fall off the wall at any time. I tried sleeping on the pancake thin pillows, and proceeded to swipe at a variety of bugs that proceeded to land on me in the night. The ceiling tiles in the bathroom were stained and about to fall down. When I went to shower, there was a strange, 2-inch long centipede creature in the tub that I cautiously washed down the drain. After showering, the water backed up about 1/2 inch in depth in the tub...when it finally drained, a nasty brownish/black sediment gurgled back up and left a nice sediment in the tub. Last, I left the hotel before 5am in the morning..there was no way to drop the room key in the drop box at the desk and lock the exterior door. I finally figured out to exit through the emergency exit doors at the end of the hall. I have stayed in a lot of different hotels and accommodations around the world, including third world countries. This one ranks in the bottom 3 of all that I have visited.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - - Uncomfortable bed
- Fruit flies
- No stopper in sink
- Ten minutes for hot water to appear from shower head, by which time there's standing water in the tub, because the tub doesn't drain properly
- Verified traveler (8/5): Close to events attending
- This is an older facility. It was very close to the events we were attending and it worked well for us. There is a lot of history here. The room was clean and quiet. If you are looking for a modern, new building this place is not for you. I would stay here again.
- barb (2/5): - When we went down for breakfast at this bed and breakfast at 8 (breakfast was to be from 6-10) no one was there. No one at the desk no one in the kitchen the place was Empty I called the number left at the desk which went to a voicemail that was never answered. So we left the keys at the desk and left
- Eric (4/5): Nice People - The people who run this place are very very nice. It is a 1938 run down hotel and they make do with what they have. One of the the staff said "Most hotels have perks, we have peculiarities" and that they did. If you are ok with a youth hostel this is good......but it is way over priced
- Ellen (6/5): Hotel is like a historical B&B - Friendly staff, clean (but outdated) rooms, nice breakfast
- Verified traveler (4/5): - bed was very hard and uncomfortable. Bathroom tub needed replaced. Paint was also peeling in many places.
- One nighter (6/5): Expected more for the price. - The owner checked us in and was an interesting guy to talk to. The rooms were clean except for a dozen or so stink bugs that were clinging to the walls about ceiling level. Couldn't reach them to remove them. My 10 year old had a hard time sleeping for fear of the stink bugs flying around and landing on her. The beds were ok but only had 2 small, flat pillows per bed. Some of the amenities that we are used to having at other hotels were missing. No hairdryer, no ironing board, no refrigerator in the room, no coffee maker, etc. May be my fault for not looking deeper into the amenities available before booking. Easy check-in and check-out. Other than the stink bugs, it was just a simple, bed for the night kind of room.
- William (10/5): OSU vs VT football game trip - Staff was very professional. Made us feel welcome.
- Nathan (10/5): Great hotel - Great location. Slept great
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The worst hotel I have stayed in. I wasn't expecting much but it was bad
- Sandra (6/5): Neat Place to Watch Netflix - Older hotel. Nice and neat with a very friendly staff (almost all I met were related.)
The only complaint I had was the mattress was worn out. I felt the springs all night long. And the pillows were super thin. Needless to say, although it was quiet and clean, I didn't get much sleep.
- Brant (8/5): I'd stay there again - The MacArthur Inn was an enjoyable experience. The hotel is a bit run down, but the room was clean, spacious and quiet. The innkeeper is a genuine character and quite an interesting individual, with plenty of knowledge of the region's history and ideas of things to do.
- Lori (2/5): NOT a 24 hour facility - This is the stay that never was... I made the reservation online, the night prior, via hotels.com. According to the hotel description, they have a 24 hour desk. NOT SO. When I arrived, at 1:30 am, the doors were locked. There is a phone number PAINTED on the door, after midnight call.... after locating a functional phone (since I had NO service on my phone) NO ONE ANSWERED! Apparently, after I called the next morning, there was a different NOTE on a different DOOR with a different PHONE NUMBER, and so make sure you verify the hotel is open and planning to allow you access.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great little historic hotel. - Great little historic hotel. Nothing fancy, but the hotel was charming and clean. The staff at the front desk upgraded my room to one with a full bathroom instead of just a shower. I met the owner, what a character! We chatted about why I was in town, where I was from, all sorts of stuff. I would stay again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): $20 more than price on the internet - The hotel charged me an additional $20 in Taxes. The bathtub, which I had paid extra for was unusable except as a shower. The air was dry and there was no way to turn down the heat without it being terribly cold. No extra blankets were available. Just a sheet and a bedspread.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Inn keeper could not have been more delightful.
- RichmonSeniors (8/5): GO Hokies! - We waited too long to get an overnight stay - but were blessed to find your place. Enjoyed chatting with our host. Thank you for honoring our "late" arrival. Great night sleep - wasn't able to stay for breakfast as "tailgating" hosts were waiting for us! Will definitely drop by again.
