Zwembad is echt heerlijk.
Alles in allem eher einsam.
- cecile (10/5): Magnifique séjour on reviendra !

Onze koffers droegen enz.
Restaurant was goed en super vriendelijk personeel.

- AndreaPLondon (10/5): A wonderful relaxing stay - We had a lovely 5 days at this resort, it's a very calm, quiet and relaxing place, with superb staff who seem to really care and to be happy in their work. Our room was huge, plenty big enough for the three of us, and kept spotlessly clean, as was the outsized bathroom (with a ginormous bath which, of course, we didn't fill!). There were a few power cuts in our time there, and these also caused the water to stop, so we couldn't flush the chain, wash hands, etc.etc. But, it's East Africa, so we just waited until the electricity was back ! The pool area and sandy paths, the gardens, and the public areas are all fantastic, charming and natural. The public beach most of the time is not great to look at as the tide is out, and it's a huuuge expanse of rock, seaweed, and dirty sand, so bear that in mind. This is not a beach which has crystal clear, calm waters for swimming. The tides come in in the afternoon, but the waters are not clear, and the currents are strong. I didn't go in further than my ankles ! The gym is hilarious, but it works, and is quite popular. The food is fine, nothing to write home about, but tasty enough with an African/Indian twang. The Jetty walk is amazing and spending time on the sofas out there looking back to land is just wonderful, a real treat. There are sunbeds and watersports on the sea-side of the Jetty restaurant too. We spent most early evenings there, enjoying the sunsets with a drink. We had two amazing massages, with a lovely therapist, mine was outside, which I really enjoyed. If you book directly with the hotel, you are offered a free massage, which is great. (You are also offered 30% off food and drinks at the Jetty, but this didn't happen on our bill, but I left it, as it didn't matter too much to us.) We did book a trip to see the monkeys at Jawani Forest via the Resort's trips person on site, which was disappointing for the guide and the actual tour, and was hugely - HUGELY - over priced. We had a private driver, yes, but we paid over GBP£210 for this trip and it was probably no more than £100 in cost, so a big mark up. Beware ! Overall, if you are looking for peace and quiet and an authentic relaxing beach experience, with kind, professional staff, this is perfect.
- Rainer (10/5): -
- Tessa (10/5): It was so peaceful & perfect - Everything was perfect, we loved eveything, the staff, the food & the environment 👌🏽 Nothing 😊
- Gypsie (7/5): -
- Caterina (10/5): Lovely place; clean, safe and luxurious. - Food was nice. People were lovely. Even the other guests were super nice. Well, the beach wasn't so nice. Way too rocky and muddy. But the pool was great.
- Sowmya (6/5): -
- SONIA (4/5): - Poco Tutto
- Paul (10/5): Paradise in Pongwe - Stayed here over election crisis in Tanzania but had great time at the resort and loved Pongwe. The staff was excellent and the food was delicious and fresh. None of the ATMs or internet worked but I had a ball with the Masai guys watching soccer and drinking beer. The restaurant out on the water was ideal. Also had a great massage. There was not much to do as everything was closed so everyone just hung out and had fun avoiding Stone Town. It was all about the awesome Tanzanian and international workers who kept it all going.
- HUIMIN (10/5): Magical -
- Ameya (9/5): - Its super quiet! Although its Ecological there shud be a TV in the room as its a very quiet and secluded place so after dinner we have nothing to do! Also the local Masai people bother quite a lot when on the beach and open areas and that is not a good feeling though its out of hotel management control. They shud probably do something about it. The manager Stefano and Priyanka are really good and caring.
- Mohammad jamal (7/5): -
- Lars (10/5): Amazing - Pongwe Bay Resort is a true hidden gem on Zanzibar: beautifully tucked away in a calm bay, far from the crowds and the bustle you’ll find elsewhere on the island. The setting is simply stunning: peaceful water, soft light at sunrise and sunset, and an overall sense of seclusion that makes it easy to fully unwind.
What really elevates the experience, though, is the staff. Everyone is genuinely friendly, attentive, and incredibly helpful, creating a warm atmosphere from the moment you arrive. Whether it’s arranging details for your stay or simply checking in to make sure you’re comfortable, the team goes out of their way to make you feel welcome.
The restaurant on the pier is an absolute highlight. Dining over the water with the ocean breeze and panoramic views is special in itself. It’s the kind of place where you end up lingering long after your meal, just enjoying the setting. Nothing

- Katerina (9/5): Lovely stay, very convenient for the tours ! - Great environment, lovely garden and welcoming staff! Very polite and warm, everybody contributed to making our vacation more exciting ! The sea was withdrawn in the morning, we had the pool but didn’t take advantage of the sea that much…

- Adamandia (10/5): We loved every moment of our stay at Pongwe. It far exceeded our expectations. - The location was fabulous, right on the beach with a spectacular view. The central dinning, lounge, bar area was an incredible architectural design, spacious and so tastefully done capturing the local context and culture. We had a bungalow on the beach with was so spacious with 3 separate areas - a bedroom, a dressing room and a bathroom. The Club was another unique element of the hotel with a wooden bridge/jetty leading you to yet another spectacular thatched dining/bar area. I would suggest the hotel provides slippers or places a tap outside each room so guests can wash off the beach sand from their feet before entering their room.
- Rosen (10/5): -
- Debra (Debbie) (9/5): A wonderful and restful stay in a beautiful setting ! - Out stay at Pongwe Bay Resort provided a much needed rest in a beautiful setting .
The Resort General Manager , Stefano is a constance presence , is a hands on manager , respectful of his staff and always seeking to present the best customer experience that he can . He works hard and manages the local staff extremely well , given that fluency in English with local staff can be a challenge .
The Assistant Manager , Priyanka is very personable and capable manager who works very hard to ensure that guests ‘ stay is seamless. They are very flexible in providing whatever service a guest requests on and off the property .
It’s interesting that the staff includes Masai tribesmen with their colourful clothing and traditions . Indeed , they form part of the entertainment on some nights .
The beach is not user friendly per se , with its shallow tide and rock outcropping ; however the beautiful pool more than compensates . The beach is good for long walks and we enjoyed taking the kayaks out for a paddle .
One of the centre pieces of the resort is a stunning dining lounge off a 250 metre long elevated pier … that’s where we had most of our meals with its striking setting .
The breakfast buffets were varied and delicious !
During our 5 day stay, we went on various tours which were easy to coordinate from the resort .
We thoroughly enjoyed our time there with its low stress and casual environment. The beach is really not user friendly and it lends itself more to just walking investigating low tidal pools versus swimming … as mentioned previously, the pool is an excellent amenity to counter that shortcoming .

- Matthew (9/5): Peaceful haven - A really peaceful place to spend 5 days with the family. Nice staff, not crowded, and lovely location on a white sand beach. Shout out to Shabaan at reception who was so helpful and kind. This hotel is not a traditional five star. The rooms are well-appointed but simple (in a good way) but this is part of the charm.
- Kasia (8/5): Beautiful place, but needs a bit more care.. - This smaller resort enjoys an amazing location at Pongwe Bay - a quiet, less touristy spot where we often had a long stretch of beach all to ourselves. The room was spacious with comfortable beds, and we loved relaxing on the balcony overlooking the pool and lush green garden. Everything was spotless, and the evening turndown service was a nice touch. The breakfast selection was quite limited, and we often had to ask for items to be replenished, the Nutella jar was empty, the fresh fruit tray ran out quickly, and there was no more crepe or pancake mix available. The staff were friendly but seemed a bit untrained at times; for example, it was easier to get coffee ourselves than to receive a “coffee with milk” served correctly.
We also mentioned to the manager that the lights in the restaurant toilets were not timed properly, leaving guests in the dark, but the response was that there was enough light coming from some outside lamp, so it wasn’t a problem; not exactly what you’d expect from a 5-star property. Later, one of the staff members told us that other guests had complained about the same issue.
Finally, on our departure day, the taxi we had booked through reception did not arrive on time - quite stressful when you’re heading to the airport. The driver, when he finally showed up 20 minutes later and after going back and forth to the reception and asking for updates, told us he had only just been called to come and pick us up.
- Andrew (9/5): Peaceful luxury in a beautiful bay. - Great location on Pongwe beach and very good food. Nice rooms and great restaurant location out on a wooden walkway in the bay. Also liked the free use of canoes/SUPs. Nothing
- poginack (8/5): -
- Lena (9/5): - The beach was very clean and nice. The location is very calm and relaxing. All the staff was extremely friendly, especially to my daughter. Prices for drinks are quite expensive. Sometimes, the food took long during dinner time.
- Vacation731588 (10/5): Perfect Paradise - This hotel is for some reason listed as 3*, but it punches way above that and the experience we had was much nearer to 5*. Everything was perfect here.
The staff were so attentive, friendly, helpful and charming.
The room was large, comfy bed, good bathroom.
The cooking was of a very high standard, plentiful and interesting and appealing to all tastes.
The cocktails were delicious and very good value - as were the wine and spirits.
The dining area looks over the beach and the Indian Ocean. Stunning.
The infinity pool is crystal clear and also looks out onto the Indian Ocean.
Massage and beauty treatments are inexpensive.
The Indian Ocean is gin clear and the water is lovely and warm.
This has been a pretty much perfect experience.
Thank you!
- Elizabeth (10/5): Lovely hotel with amazing staff - The staff at the hotel really made the trip. They were welcoming, friendly and supportive in attempts to speak Swahili !
Special thanks to Janeth. Nichts
- Dávid (9/5): - Tökéletes választás azoknak, akik távol maradnának a nyüzsgő tömegtől és átadnák magukat a zavartalan pihenésnek.

- Mohamed (10/5): - Good place to spend quality time
- Anna Luisa (7/5): A good resort considering you are staying in Zanzibar (But reconsider the stay in Zanzibar, the poverty is high and too - Super friendly staff, supportive with all your needs and friendly. I highly recommend having a massage there too. No ball at the pool, very limited menu (no to nothing vegetarian options, just samosa and a soup that sometimes popped on the blackboard, also a very “meh” quality for food over priced for it considering the location and long waits.
- Maiwase (9/5): -
- Owen Exauce (9/5): SUPER - LES PRIX DES PRESTATIONS A L'EXTERIEUR
- Sumit (8/5): Fabolous location, good food, fantastic service and regular check in from the resort manager Stefano. Thank you team Pon - Cleanliness of the property, decoration , simplicity Minor issue, Plugs were EU and not 3 pin like lot of mainland Tanzania.
- Atieno (5/5): -
- Roland (9/5): -

- Chris (9/5): Lovely beach break after being on safari. Good food, nice beach and very friendly staff. - Very peaceful, friendly staff
- Iwanska (9/5): Cudowny rajski, kameralny hotel - Piękne miejsce w afrykańskim klimacie i piękną zielenią.
- Alessandro (10/5): Relax 100% - Ottima struttura
Personale gentile
Ottima cucina
- Erick (9/5): The staff goes above and beyond - From the moment we arrived, we felt warmly welcomed and cared for, especially travelling with our two-year-old daughter. Every detail, from the hospitality to the facilities, made our stay unforgettable.
A special thank you to:
Manjeer (Hotel Manager), who went above and beyond for us. He was always present, attentive to our needs, and ready to resolve, suggest, or help with anything—his dedication truly elevated our experience.
Caroline, who was always so kind to our baby and attentive at every meal. She made sure we had everything we needed for our daughter and made dining a joy.
Salum, whose kindness and attentiveness during meals made every dining experience delightful.
Muza (Heritage Tours & Safari), our guide to Stone Town. Born and raised in Zanzibar, his knowledge, passion, and storytelling brought the city to life for us. He answered every question with patience and detail, making our visit both insightful and enjoyable.
Our driver from Heritage Tours & Safari (apologies for not remembering his name), who accompanied us on tours and transfers, including to the airport. His professionalism, responsibility, and care made us feel safe and relaxed at all times.
The cleaning team also deserves special mention: they kept everything spotless, were thoughtful about mosquito protection, and added to the comfort of our stay.
The resort itself is outstanding:
The food is exceptional, with a variety of international options and incredible flavour at every meal.
The pool and beach access are wonderful—relaxing and family-friendly, with thoughtful extras like balls and cards to play.
The atmosphere is peaceful and ideal for families with children. Our daughter absolutely loved every moment here.
This resort is highly recommended for families, especially those travelling with young kids. The warmth, safety, and genuine care from the staff made all the difference.
