Guest Reviews
- claudiahT6342DS (10/5): Best retreat ever!! - The best. Love the atmosphere, the staff, the facilities, the food, the activities!! Everything is perfect.
- pulsher13 (10/5): Serene, relaxing and feeling pampered - The location is beautiful with well maintained grounds.
Our room was clean and comfortable.
Staff were friendly and accommodating. Several referred to us being at home.
The food was healthy, delicious and presentation was great.
The meals included package seemed reasonable for what we received.
You are in a secluded location on a mountain so getting to a tourist location takes time.
We would definitely like to return.
Yoga classes twice a day, hiking trails (we only tried one of ten) other options like water exercise, tapping, sound bath and breathing/meditation available.
- D2703LKriccardop (6/5): Not an Aryurveda retreat - We paid for an Ayurveda package which required a minim stay of 7 days. In reality there is no Ayurveda, just 1 yoga session, 1 massage per day and 30 minutes meditation. There is no medical supervision, no special diet aside from the standard vegetarian food serves to all the guests.
The hotel built a new structure at the bottom of a steep hill. They arrange a shuttle service on the hour, which means that movement within the complex is limited whilst waiting for the van/car.
In the positive side, the setting is beautiful, the staff very nice and helpful and the Ayurveda practitioner very nice and gives a very good massage.
Overall a pleasant experience but we would have not came had we known about the package.
- lindafQ6207IL (10/5): A healthy reset for mind and body - Outstandingly beautiful with mountain and ocean views everywhere. Kind and responsive staff, good food, great pools and places to hang out.
- stevepK4558WD (8/5): Beautiful Property and Spa with Some Service Issues - Beautiful, well designed property nestled in a mountain side overlooking the Pacific. Tropical setting with well manicured, colorful landscaping. The spa was first class! The food service in the main restaurant was disappointing. The servers worked hard to keep up but seemed chronically under staffed and stressed. Wine service was extremely slow and expensive with one wine server for as many as 35 guests. Wine was way over priced at 4 to 5 times retail. Shuttles to the rooms and facilities at the bottom of the hill only ran hourly which was extremely inconvenient for those who could not handle the very steep climb. A bit more emphasis on service is in order given the prices.
- PetraS264 (10/5): Fabulous retreat with amazing sunsets - The people were lovely and experienced at what they do. The setting was beautiful. The amenities were great. We really loved the morning yoga, workouts and hikes. The food was delicious and sometimes too much! Healthy, but quite a bit. I would have like the option of smaller portions. Maybe I could have, but I didn’t ask 🙃
- Quest559344 (10/5): Heaven on Earth - The Retreat is as advertised: a deeply healing spot staffed by some of the friendliest people you’ll meet. All of that is wrapped in tropical beauty with gorgeous pools and other places to relax and enjoy. The food is healthy and delicious. I went with my husband. I was interested in the amazing healers and can highly recommend Priscilla and Yamuna, Dr.Linh and the Abhyanga. My husband gets the Heaven on Earth massage when we arrive and again just before we leave. It’s all a delight and just what we need. We returned this year and expect to be back next. Thank you to all at the Retreat for making our stay so special!
- 763alanak (10/5): Highly recommend if you need to recharge and truly relax - I stayed here for my first solo trip to celebrate my birthday and had such an incredible experience. From the moment I arrived, the staff were incredibly welcoming, and the retreat itself is truly special — I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I participated in the Art of Resting program, and having everything thoughtfully scheduled for the duration of my stay made it easy to fully relax. I felt completely at ease, safe, and deeply cared for throughout the experience.
I also had a Reiki session with Mariana, which was truly transformative and something I still think about often. Self-care is often approached at a surface level, but this healing session went much deeper and felt genuinely restorative on every level.
- colleenkV9586ZT (10/5): Incredible amazing the best Spa!!! - I spent a day at this resort. It is the best spa I have had the privilege to enjoy! ❤️ The grounds are breathtaking, the staff is outstanding. The massage was great. The food was delicious. Every Need is taken care of. I highly recommend this Resort! I will for sure be back! Thank you for a blessed day ❤️🙏
- 396kimberleyg (10/5): Mother/daughter wellness getaway - This place is indescribable. Every bit of it was perfect. Great way to jumpstart a healthy new year. Already booked for next December
- mirandajmounts (10/5): HEAVEN ON EARTH! Best hotel you will experience. - WOW!!!!! I am absolutely blown away by my experience at The Retreat. This is my second time and it keeps getting better! The most delightful, warm, SPECIAL staff in the world! Jonathan is an individual who I will never forget- his hospitality, attention to detail, knowledge of ingredients and history.. he was such a gem! I could write a positive review for each staff member. Thank you to Juan, Michael, Fabio and CARLOS! I love you all. The chefs were stellar because the food was 10/10. Healthy, delicious, elevated and truly luxury. Spa 20/10 Cleanliness 10/10. Views 10/10
- I could just keep going. Don't waste your time going anywhere else. This hotel will change your life, I promise you that. Big shoutout to the best spa therapist l've ever had - Amal, who truly excels at his craft. He is world-class when it comes to Ayurvedic treatments. Everyone was delightful. Emerson was also a highlight of my trip, his warmth and smile at the front desk was so memorable. Thank you for having me! I cannot wait to return and visit my home again!
- lisajL2035XH (10/5): An Amazing Experience - 🌟 Dreaming of peace, relaxation, & total rejuvenation? Head to The Retreat Wellness Resort and Spa Costa Rica—a hidden gem atop a magical healing crystal mountain in Atenas! ✨
I'm overflowing with gratitude to have shared this life-changing escape with my sister-friend Zina (43 years strong! 💕). From arrival to departure: daily jaw-dropping spa treatments, farm-to-table feasts from their organic garden (chef's kiss! 👩🍳), sound healing, yoga, cooking class, tea tasting, infusion creations and tasting, making homemade tostadas and sugar cane juice and of course the pranayama breathing sessions.
Hiking the crystal mountain challenged me mentally, physically, & emotionally—the entire stay was amazing!!
- M5827XUerickb (10/5): Piecefull - Great experience, the staff is great, food also great. The fact that most food is made out of their own harvest is pretty unique. Sunsets are spectacular! The infusion class was very interesting, Jonathan is very kind and take the time to explain details!
Amazing experience overall
- 263zinas (10/5): Much Needed Stay - The week stay was excelente. My room was clean and the sunset view was amazing. Each day was filled with the most tastfully prepared and presentation of food. The spa treatments, yoga classes, aerobics and hiking was much needed.
- 2irisj (10/5): Mother Daughter Getaway - My daughter and I spent five days at the retreat and enjoyed so many aspects of our stay. What stood out most were:
Atmosphere: a stunning property set in nature, with spectacular views from every vantage point and cozy, uncrowded spaces to curl up in.
Food (and coffee and juices and mocktails): flavourful, clean, sustainably sourced, and impressively varied.
Staff: warm, service-oriented, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly locals.
A special shout-out to Carlos and Marianna for the amazing sound healing, hikes, and meditation; Lucia and Vanessa in the spa; Sergio, Jonathan, Miguel, and Je Je in the dining area; and the wonderful front-desk team—especially Monica and both Alejandros. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone whose name I’ve forgotten!
P.S. Lord, Felipe, and the other transient wildlife added to the fun.
Two things that would improve the stay:
Room quality: The Queen Rooms near the dining area boast the best views, but they’re a little tired and not as polished as shown in the materials. Compared to the newer accommodations—which are incredible—these rooms feel dated. Some renovating would go a long way, especially in the bathrooms, which feel cramped and offer very little storage.
Accessibility: The accessibility of the property is quite limited. On damp days, the road from Santosha to the spa and dining areas becomes too steep and slippery to walk safely. Adding stairs would make a tremendous difference, as many guests prefer walking over waiting for an hourly shuttle and want to remain active.
- Relax15795050355 (10/5): Unforgettable experience - A wonderful place with an excellent service. We are so grateful for the whole team especially the manager Emerson. Food is delicious and we enjoyed our morning yoga and afternoon hiking
- prime202001 (10/5): Best culinary experience ever - My wife and I came here to celebrate our 15th anniversary Oct. 20th thru the 24th. The hospitality, service, and friendliness of the staff was exceptional. There are so many great aspects to this resort, from the spa, to the pools, to the location. It checks all of the boxes. What stood out the most was the food. The quality of ingredients, creativity, presentation, flavor, and nutritional value offered is outstanding. We also did the Mystique dinner. Altogether this was by far the best culinary experience we've ever had.
The spa and spa services were idyllic. The Yoga classes and sound bath meditations were excellent. Getting some personal trainer help from Carlos in the gym was very helpful and fun. If you're looking for a place to re-center and focus on some personal wellness this is a great place to do it.
- S341QZamandal (10/5): My yearly retreat to Costa Rica - Starting back in 2019, I have visited this retreat once a year. It is four days of reset, eating healthy and yoga. I try to schedule my visits around when Sophia Rand is the yoga instructor. Her yoga classes make for an incredible experience. You must book spa treatments. One of my favorite spas with the spectacular views. I look forward to returning next year!
- McWag_SF (10/5): The most magical spot for health and wellness - I spent a week at The Retreat Costa Rica, and it was perfect. I already had high expectations, and yet the Retreat exceeded them! I was looking for a beautiful place to do a solo wellness retreat where I could de-stress from work and feel pampered and safe. The location is in a mountain jungle that seems remote and peaceful even though it’s only 15 mins from the nearest town. The decor of the resort is gorgeous and calming. My room was in the new Santosha building. I couldn’t believe it was more beautiful than the photos online.
The spa menu was the most extensive I have ever seen. It included everything from traditional Swedish massages to Ayurvedic oil massages, deep tissue massage with crystal scrub, facials, red-light sauna, anti-cellulite radio frequency and so much more. I had 12 treatments during my stay, and every therapist was top notch.
The food was elegant and delicious. I decided to only eat vegan options, although meat and dairy are available.
The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. They definitely provided five star service every day.
This small hotel has only 22 rooms but has 3 pools, 2 restaurants and lots of space to spread out and enjoy solitude.
The yoga room was also beautiful. It is set up with instruments (gongs, bells), and I attended a sound bath one night.
I have been recommending The Retreat Costa Rica to everyone I know. It is a magical place.
- OnAir00241291862 (10/5): Magical Vortex - We had the most incredible stay here for our 10th wedding anniversary. I cannot recommend this place more highly and we cannot wait to return! The Retreat in Costa Rica is a magical vortex where your care and healing is considered in every moment! Special shout out to Jonathan in the restaurant for taking such great care of us and sending us home with our own travel bags of granola for the airplane ride home. We were so sad to leave the food, the views, the nature, and the beautiful people at this place! See you again soon!
- francesv517 (10/5): Sheer bliss and perfection. Restorative and healing. - I cannot say enough good things about my stay at The Retreat. From the excellent meals and dining service, to an incredible massage at Vida Mia spa, transformative daily yoga (Sophie was excellent) and the ambience of the property, I truly felt like this was heaven on earth. I spent 2.5 days here during rainy season, and it was sheer perfection. They think of every detail, and make you feel like you’re part of the family. I left feeling refreshed, renewed, and eagerly awaiting my return. The cookies served at the turndown service were an impeccable touch, and so delicious. At The Retreat, expect to be fully taken care of body, mind, and soul. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough.
- Jamie (10/5): - The property is truly wonderful—a perfect place to find peace of mind, reset, detach, and return as a better person. I only wish I had more time to stay, perhaps even a month or two, because it’s definitely a place I plan to revisit.
The commute through the resort involves quite a few hills, which at times felt like a workout, but I like to think of it as built-in cardio—almost like hiking. The food was absolutely outstanding—five stars, maybe even ten.
I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a rejuvenating and memorable experience.
- 455kiaras (10/5): The Best Birthday Ever! - Best retreat I’ve ever been to! Recommend the luxury lofts, the view is UNBELIEVABLE. the staff are all so accommodating. I’m tearing up as I write this. Until next time <3
- 674amiap (4/5): Room for growth - The check in/ check out ruined the luxury experience. Ive been wanting to stay here since 2019 when I was in law school. You can imagine my excitement when I finally had the opportunity to visit for my first solo international trip. I booked the wellness package for 3 days and that included roundtrip transportation and a dining credit. I provided my flight information as soon as I booked my reservation months prior and requested transportation because I had an early arrival. The horror and anxiety I felt when the resort emailed me a few hours before my flight that I had to pay an additional $310 to check in or I would have to wait at the airport for 5 hrs. I could have planned and explored San Jose had I known beforehand. My friend driving me to the airport felt so bad that he transferred me some money to cover it. the time difference and last minute change made it impossible to book alternative transportation and believe me I tried. The hotel never replied to my email agreeing to the fee. My entire flight I was uneasy and uncertain. When I called the hotel after I landed they did not know if the driver was there :/ AGAIN, I’m a solo woman in a foreign country unsure of how I’m getting to my hotel at 3-4 am. The receptionist told me to wait at a restaurant and she would call me back. I went looking for the drivers and luckily the driver was there. When I checked in the rep barely said hello to me and charged my card 2437.00 for the deposit. I told her the fine print said $1500, she said no but then requested my card and charged it again for 1500. No apology or anything.
Room
The room was ok. The door lock was beyond worn out and not secure which raised safety concerns. Luckily, I came prepared with door stops/alarms etc. The shower was fantastic and the bed was comfy. Housekeeping came every day and did a wonderful job. The products in the bathroom were awesome. They do turndown every night with a cookie and recipe and I got a schedule the next night.
Food
The breakfast is consistent. Juices and eggs will def be on the menu. Fabio was so kind and helpful. The garden is gorgeous. The bugs are an issue despite the website claiming the elevation minimizes bugs. The new restaurant was BEAUTIFUL. The pizza was delicious. Mosquitoes are relentless and a cockroach flew on my plate during dinner my first night.
Spa
Omg. The view was outstanding and the service was fantastic. I did the unlock your voice session and it was amazing.
Gym/yoga
The gym and new yoga studio are fabulous!! Unfortunately, if you plan other activities it conflicts with the yoga and you’ll miss it.
Activities
The farmers market with Chef Sergio was so fun. He was very kind and made me feel safe. The cooking class is more of a demonstration because Chef Lindsay prepares the food and you watch. The hikes are self guided except for one day when Carlos led a guided tour. I asked for water before we left because it was so hot and the receptionist told me he got it for us. He had ONE 16oz bottle in a huge cooler. I got overheated and threw up on the walk back. They had a van pick me up and treated me so well. I felt so cared for during that experience. We found a quartz on the hike that he promised to clean and return to me before I left. He never did- even when I reminded him at the gym.
Check out
Alejandro was very dry. No questions about my stay. When I realized lunch was not included I asked for an earlier shuttle and he brushed me off. Another couple offered me a ride but it was only 11. When it was my time to leave the shuttle drove me to the front of the property, that driver told me to get out and get in a different van with someone else. THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN STATED PRIOR. Again, I’m a woman traveling solo that doesn’t like surprises. Lastly, my billing was still incorrect after I had to remind them more than once that my package included transportation and the dining credit.
A tour of the entire property would be a nice touch. The welcome is at the spa and they only show you that area. A welcome drink/tea/water would be a beautiful touch. Theres a lot of room for improvement but the beautiful grounds and nature at the retreat is undeniable and breathtaking.
- U2989OUnataliab (10/5): Outstanding!!! - From the moment we arrived, everyone made us feel well taken care of, as though we were a part of the family. The wellness programs and spa services were above anything we’ve experienced. The yoga and fitness instructors were fantastic as was the sound bath healer. As for the food, it was exceptionally fresh, absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. We loved not having to decide what to eat! This retreat has all the little details covered to ensure the most relaxing and rejuvenating stay. It truly is heaven on earth. We are definitely coming back.
- Szabolcs (10/5): - We had the time of our life at the Retreat! I thank all the staff for their kindness and thoughtfullness.
- rbarrio7 (10/5): Gorgeous and relaxing location - Wow! This place was amazing. We did not know what to expect because it was recommended by a friend but it definitely met and exceeded our expectations. Absolutely stunning. I can't wait to return.
- yaelh364 (10/5): Extraordinary - I honestly didn’t what to expect, I was looking for a get away with my mom for a couple of months, but this place completely blew us away. From the moment we arrived, it felt like we were being welcomed into someone’s beautiful, peaceful home. The food was something we looked forward to every day — we never knew what the chef was going to come up with, and somehow every single meal was both nourishing and delicious (and totally different!).
What really made our stay unforgettable, though, was the staff. Kimberly, Carlos, Jazmin, Fabio — every single person was warm, kind, and made us feel genuinely cared for. There was this calm energy all around that made it easy to finally slow down and breathe.
We left feeling lighter, rested, and reconnected — something we didn’t even know we needed. This wasn’t just a vacation, it was restoring, relaxing and nourishing in every way.
- terrimP9948EO (10/5): 5 star serving - Johnathan was an exceptional server. When my husband informed him that we were celebrating our anniversary, he went above and beyond to prepare a private dinner just for us. He and the other hostess even sang “Happy Birthday” to my wife. Throughout all the meals, he was attentive and present, and at our last dinner, he prepared his favorite cocktail for us, which was absolutely delicious. We eagerly anticipate our return to see him again.
Paris and Terri McClain
- 525Catrina (10/5): Pampered on My Birthday—and Every Day—at The Retreat Costa Rica - I had the pleasure of doing The Big M: Mastering Menopause program at The Retreat Costa Rica in May 2025, and it was the most restorative gift I could’ve given myself.
I traveled solo for my birthday and was genuinely celebrated from the moment I arrived. Even though I came alone, I never felt lonely—every staff member seemed to know my name. The atmosphere was peaceful, warm, and deeply personal.
The daily spa treatments had me feeling like a princess. Each wellness program includes multiple treatments, and they’re not just filler—they’re thoughtfully selected and expertly delivered. The Vichy shower was a standout—so relaxing and unique.
The vegetarian, organic meals were absolutely delicious and surprisingly filling (especially for a daily meat-eater like me).
My luxury loft room was a sanctuary, and the entire property was peaceful, clean, and beautifully maintained. From the thoughtful accommodations to the kindness of every staff member, this experience was next-level healing and comfort.
I left feeling celebrated, restored, and incredibly grateful.
P.S. When I arrived with an unexpected sinus allergy, the team escorted me to a local pharmacy to ensure I could communicate and get the right care. Truly above and beyond.
- CFerrara29 (10/5): Amazing and magical wellness resort! - Beyond gorgeous, staff was so wonderful, food was out of this world. Such a special place to unwind and reset- will definitely be coming back!
- maryeg31 (10/5): Can be a mentally and spiritually healing experience. Call them first if you have limited mobility- they can accommodate - My experience here was more than I could have ever anticipated. I worked with an Ayurvedic doctor who helped me immensely, and I now have a new diet, morning routine, and ways of coping that have greatly improved my digestion & mental and physical health. The massages were incredible and the sound bath and reiki were very healing. The pranayama breathing helped me reach a peaceful state and I still practice it each day. I have some limited mobility and stairs/ inclines can trigger sciatica, and the staff was very helpful and understanding, offering to carry things for me, not batting an eye when I crawled upstairs, etc. they told me that people who use wheelchairs can access the spa. You’d just need to request a room with a ramp to it when booking.
I was there alone, as were many other women, and we affectionately called it “camp burnout.” The food was so fresh, healthy, and delicious, and the morning and evening yoga were great ways to frame the day. I spent my week there without once going online or on social media. I read two books, and was so peaceful I’d often just lay down on a comfy bed by the pool or on my deck and watch and listen to the wildlife. They have hiking poles and umbrellas all over. If you get hungry early, I recommend bringing some nuts or something. They also give you a treat each evening and I just ate that in the morning to satisfy my hunger. I had a room with a bathtub and the spa sells bath salts, and those soaks were very restorative.
Everyone is there for different reasons and I noticed that I could spend time talking to others, but also not feel weird if I wanted to eat alone. I met the owner without realizing it, and my first impression was just that she was a friendly beautiful woman who just got a treatment. She talks to me briefly and laughed with me, and later I learned she owns it. I think that says a lot about her and the space she’s created.
- rachelles990 (10/5): The Retreat is AMAZING - The Retreat has been amazing. Service levels are off the charts. The food is amazing. Jonathon the som is extraordinary. His knowledge is outstanding. He took us on a tour of the organic farm. He is very passionate about the local fare and how it is used in the resort. I would highly recommend you visit and experience this spa and retreat
- sarahtG8124CU (10/5): Most relaxing vacation in a long time - What an amazing experience this place has been. The food is phenomenal, the atmosphere is relaxing. All of the staff has been so friendly. We went on a tour of the garden with Jonathan, and it was so informative! He was so passionate about all of the food that they grow here, it was fun to learn from him. And we ended with a delicious charcuterie plate and a glass of sparkling wine. I will absolutely be returning here, and most likely for a longer period of time so I can enjoy the yoga classes that I could not attend this time.
- Z2951LJjennal (10/5): Perfect place for a recharge - This was the perfect place for a weary Mama to reset and recharge. The food and design is all curated exquisitely. The spa, the food, the jungle, the room. Perfect. The only draw back was there is some construction going on to finish the second bar and restaurant, but I expect that to be finished very soon. Even despite some noise a few times a day, I had the most relaxing time. This place is one of the best I've ever been to, and I've been to retreats all over the world.
- Gigifromnyc (10/5): a completely exquisite place in a simple town with luscious, flavorful food and amazing staff - just got back from a 5 night stay and i have serious withdrawal! i loved this place so much and am already planning to go back next year.
first off, it's just a really beautiful resort. especially loved the santosha building which is a new construction with a brand new yoga room. by far this is the prettiest yoga room i've ever been in, and it was completely breathtaking. just inhabiting the space was therapeutic because i love being in pretty spaces. santosha also has new guest rooms, and i was able to take a peek-- they look absolutely divine. i'm totally staying here on my next trip. double sink bathrooms (the one complaint i had about my room was the bathroom size-- i stayed in a 2 queen bed unit called moringa which had a breathtaking view out the balcony but a small bathroom) plus really high ceilings. loved santosha and spent most of my lounging time here.
secondly, loved the yoga classes! truly loved jen endicott and her soothing vibes. the resort has a rotation of yoga teachers throughout the year. please make sure you have jen back every year! i loved the 2x daily sessions with her and want to follow her around wherever she goes. i loved that the resort is able to find such high quality teachers like this which really speaks to their commitment to all aspects of wellness. taking jen's restorative class in the yoga room with the midday showers was truly cathartic and soothing. extra special.
third, the food here is EXCELLENT. admittedly, i don't always eat super healthy, but this trip has made me want to experiment with some aspects of my eating (for example, i may cut out all dairy in my diet going forward inspired by my time here). we had a chance to do a small group session with the executive chef sergio (who by the way was really nice and seems very commanding / efficient in the kitchen) which was wonderful. i loved the portion / sizing for each meal, and the chocolate chip almond cookies that are laid out with turndown service. every meal during our stay was phenomenal. i've never known gluten free, vegan cooking to be this special and kudos to sergio and his staff for this. literally everything we ate was so well-seasoned and refined. my particular favorites included this squash / eggplant wrapped lentil with tomato sauce (a la italian) for lunch and the skirt steak at dinner (it's extra $ and not the standard choice of protein you're given, but it's really completely worth it). also random, but i loved the hot sauce here and asked for it every meal. it's "homemade" and it is exquisite!
we had rented a car, but didn't venture much outside the resort other than a brief excursion on our own to playa mantas (a beach nearby which was nice) and the coffee plantation El Toledo (also on our own, but the resort does these excursions if you request it for additional fees). also got the spa treatment here twice (heaven on earth), and both emilia and lucia were great!
shoutouts to a few people who were extra warm and provided great service-- among the dining staff we loved JJ and jazmin. also special thanks to gilberto at the concierge desk-- a very pleasant staff member who actually went out of his way amid pouring rain to show us a guest room in santosha because we really wanted to take a peek (made us want to come back just to stay there which we will!!). monica and emerson were also great. thank you!
can't recommend the resort enough and can't wait to return.
- Rstefanussen (8/5): Beautiful Sanctuary in the middle of the Rain Forest - We had a lovely three-night stay at The Retreat and would come back in a heartbeat. The grounds are absolutely stunning and it was surreal to experience such luxurious accommodations in the middle of the rainforest. We stayed in a luxury loft and loved every thoughtful detail: the waterfall shower, the 2-person bath, the flawless design. We couldn’t stop taking photos of the grounds and views of the Santosha wellness club.
The only things that felt less-than-perfect were the food and at times the service. The food is very healthy, perfectly portioned, and beautifully done. The proteins, however, were often overcooked, even when I specified a specific temperature for the fish to prevent this. Everything else was always perfect and delicious, but that crucial element was often surprisingly off.
The service is warm and very thoughtful, but at times a bit forgetful. I think the lovely “pura vida” energy is worth having to ask for something a time or two, but at this price point a bit more attention would go a long way.
I’m just mentioning those two things to manage expectations; we had a wonderful time and would love to return soon. I highly recommend The Retreat to anyone looking for rest and relaxation in Costs Rica.
- MilsyD (10/5): Amazing Spa experiences - Top to bottom this retreat is detailed oriented offering delicious healthy cuisine and the best spa treatments I’ve ever experienced. A must do is Amal’s Ayurveda massage. It a unique experience with the 4th generation healer who begins with a short prayer and song before he begins. The 90 minute version, he pours oil with healing power on your forehead and makes long strokes whisking away pain and fatigue. An experience worth trying.
- tresdal (10/5): Rejuvenating holiday - We had a wonderful time. We did a leisurely beach day with Alejandro and took an amazing mocktail course with Jonathan where we learned about the indigenous fruits and herbs along with how to utilize them to make satisfying and elegant non-alcoholic beverages. Who needs alcohol?! The spa amenities were very relaxing. It was a great experience all around.
- Turner487 (10/5): Home Away from Home! - ...third time here: true place of healing.
what makes it so special is the PEOPLE: every department - Front Desk (Monica, Emerson, Alejandro...); the Office) Jimena!); the SPA (good Lord!) - Fiorella, Daisy, Amal...everyone!) and the Dining Room: this crew is wonderful: Karina, Juan, Fabio, Michael and JONATHAN. I feel I'm visiting a friend's house, each time. The warm smiles (and, yes *hugs*), make each meal that much more special.
I can't wait to return!
- 520ashe (10/5): A perfect getaway - Johnathan, Juan, and Fabio were the best! They were attentive from start to finish. The Retreat is truly Heaven on Earth! The Retreat is hands down the epitome of relaxation. The amenities, the food, and service combined make this place unforgettable!
- sls12 (10/5): Perfect long weekend get away - Perfect feel good getaway. Staff was so friendly and helpful, amazing spa experiences and beautiful property. High-end feel without the pretentiousness. Surrounded by nature- I loved the hiking trails and wildlife soothing sounds off my balcony everyday. Perfect size retreat - opportunity to meet other guests if interested but also never felt like too many people at pool or spa or anywhere. Entire experience was relaxing and tranquil. I’ll definitely be back!
- L1155UElizb (10/5): Will be back - An amazing experience. Staff, especially Jonathan made us feel like family!!! Jonathan can craft a mock or cocktail unimaginable. Everyone greets you with a smile because why not its likes a little piece of heaven.
Quiet ambiance and a wonderful place to heal.
The spa and therapy treatments are second to none.
Met lovely people and the food spectacular.
- karenrC3351NH (10/5): Fabulous wellness spa 🤩 - The Retreat at Costa Rica has been an absolutely incredible experience. From the delicious meals to the fabulous spa treatments it’s a trip I plan to make again!
Jonathan C. provided a mock tail class and the results were outstanding. You won’t miss the alcohol, I promise!
- mikesC1172IP (10/5): Service Off The Chain - Impeccable. Perfect. Heaven. Not enough words to describe how great this place is. Especially the service all around. The meal service is fantastic. Everyone wears a genuine smile and it’s truly authentic. Jonathan especially has incredible service in and an intoxicating smile. Let’s hope you see him when you come!
- 650atousas (10/5): Once in a lifetime experience - Staying at the Retreat is a unique and incredible experience. The staff are extremely warm and attentive and made our stay very special: the reception/management staff such as Emerson and Alex are so helpful and friendly; our tour with Alejandro to Manuel Antonio where we saw a variety of wildlife was so much fun and informative; the restaurant staff including Fabio, Juan, Karina and Jonathan make the dining experience wonderful; the food made by Sergio, Lindsay and their team is an amazing combination of healthy and super tasty; and best of all are the creative and delicious cocktails created by their expert mixologist Jonathan! The spa treatments are also some of the best I’ve ever experienced! I visited with my sister for our birthday and they made it truly special!
- caseysY9614QX (10/5): Excellent experience! - Easily on-par with any high end resort (think Four Seasons, Aman) in terms of property and amenities. This boutique experience edges above the afforementioned with its unparalleled service and exceptional attention to detail. As a neurosurgeon I appreciate those with a true passion for their craft- Jonathan curated a bar program that consistently delivered some of the best cocktails I've experienced in Latin America!
- Escape623760 (10/5): Refuel your body & spirit in a little slice of heaven in Costa Rica - The nickname for The Retreat Costa Rica is 'heaven on earth' and it is no exaggeration--a gorgeous setting in the mountains with pristine rooms with views to appreciate the sunset.
The chef & team prepared creative cuisine using many ingredients from their own gardens focused on well being and vitality. We took a mocktail course from Jonathan and had drinks unlike anything we had ever tasted. The bonus was the drinks were good for our health too.
The spa was remarkable! For the first time I experienced an Ayurvedic Abhyanga massage with Amal Michael. This was the most memorable and impactful body treatment of my life!! Truly he is a gifted practitioner. My husband commented that my face looked different as the worry lines disappeared!
We appreciate the entire staff taking such amazing care of us. We are already planning a return visit to our new favorite wellness spa & resort!
- shop0508 (10/5): Gorgeous room and fantastic staff! - The food was delicious and healthy; gourmet vegan (although a protein is always offered if desired).
The staff went above and beyond to help make our stay wonderful!
The room was tastefully appointed and extremely comfortable.
The hotel and grounds are very well maintained, lush and beautiful.
The only caveat is that they are expanding the hotel so the construction noise is quite unsettling during the day. This was disappointing given that this was meant to be a serene wellness escape! Apparently the construction will be finished by May 2025.
- Fabiola (10/5): - Sitio agradable, muy buena atención, cerca de San José
- Marsha Elizabeth (10/5): - Beautiful and restful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Luxury you pay for - A place worth staying longer. Beautiful facilities and surroundings. Exceptional service. But is is no cheap to stay there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Luxury that costs - A place worth staying longer. Beautiful facilities and surroundings. Exceptional service. But is is no cheap to stay there.
- Aleksandr (4/5): - This is a MOUNTAIN resort. Meaning there are very steep hills and to stay here you need to be very fit to be able to climb those hills to spa, restaurant, pool. Felt very bad for older people who had difficulties doing that. There’s no room service. Rooms are located on steep hills. Breakfast starts at 8:30! This is the latest breakfast we’ve ever had to have - we wake up at 5 and like to start our day early. Spa is nice. Steam room is very cold, can’t even get a steam higher.
There was power outage one day for a couples of house and you’d think that a 5 star hotel would have a generator, but had to take a cold shower…
Internet was out during those few hours and if you still need to do some work - you can’t.
- Vincenzo (6/5): Potentially lovely but now past its best - We were really excited about this stay having read all of the reviews but ended up disappointed. We received a room upgrade which we were grateful for but the room was very tired, particularly the bathroom area which had a handful of areas of damage. The room was also dirty, which we pointed out with photos to staff and they kind of asked us why we had looked for dirt (which we found when we moved a unit to plug a charger in) and there were multiple hairs in the room. They did do a “detail clean” but we keep our own house cleaner. Additionally we were woken by grounds keepers making loud banging noises every morning at 6am. Additionally they pride themselves on their food which we found to be average and $57 per person for dinner which we thought was expensive for the level of the food. On the positive side the communal areas were very nice and we had excellent massages.
- Michael (10/5): Perfect place to relax and energize - The place was amazing. Very relaxing, with plenty of local trip or adventure options. The food was impeccable and the staff was friendly and accommodating.
- Dora (10/5): - Few bumps but they were quick to fix the issues and very efficient. Thanks to Alejandro for a great service .
- Carla (10/5): - The Retreat is truly Heaven on Earth from the location to the staff to the food and spa. If you need to refresh and recenter yourself, this is the only place to go. Days filled with yoga, hiking, meditation, and relaxation await. We will make this an annual trip!
- Diana (10/5): Una vacacion espectacular - Espectacular la atención la comida excepcional todo
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastisk opphold!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was the easiest vacation I've ever been on as far as the hotel having the most popular tours available and creating a personalized daily schedule. Hotel staff do take you on each tour so you become comfortable with every one you interact with. Meals were my biggest worry going in but they were all well seasoned with good portion sizes and 3 courses with every dinner-- we had fish most nights and beef once during our stay. If we visit again, we would choose a more inclusive package as it was very easy to spend $1000/day between tours, treatments, and meals for 2.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was a very relaxing stay.
- Stephanie (10/5): I want to go back! - Amazing setting, spa (Laura was especially accommodating), restaurant (Jonathan was great) and incredible food. The front office, the driver from the airport were all very kind and attentive. Sofia, the yoga instructor was excellent. I can hardly wait to go back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Retreat is a short drive from the San Jose Airport. The property feels serene and welcoming. The rooms off the yoga studio are definitely for morning people. The spa is world class. The views and sunsets spectacular.
- Michael (10/5): Wow. - Amazing stay and hospitality. Only place I’ll stay when returning to Costa Rica.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Best place to stay near san jose - Amazing - beat our expectations by a mile and the photos don't do justice. The food is world class and we felt amazing after just one night stay.
- Thea (10/5): Quick weekend break - Gorgeous stay at the Retreat! We ate well and relaxed - the place is done very, very well, with beautiful views and very comfortable rooms. The only complaint I have is that the mattresses could have been better (which is often the case in hotels). We didn’t get up to much on our short stay besides lounging by the pools and in the spa and working out in the perfectly well equipped gym, but we did do one yoga class which was lovely - the studio is beautiful. The wildlife on the property is fantastic - incredible flowers and landscaping and peacocks, other exotic birds, butterflies, iguana, fish. The property is new and the spaces are very well appointed and extremely comfortable. It was only a 1.5 hour drive from San Jose during rush hour and only took us 30 mins to get to the airport to leave (not during rush hour).
- kthooch (10/5): - It’s really hard to describe this property in a way that fairly captures its essence. It’s amazing. Decadent treat all the way around: food, service, views, spa and services and overall ambiance. Will be back.
- ADRIAN (10/5): Perfect little Gem - This place is perfect for a quiet get away. Healthy. You will feel refreshed after resting in this hidden gem. Food is healthy. Atmosphere is relaxing. The staff are very polite and helpful. Everything is perfect.
- Sonia (10/5): Un paraíso en las montañas de Atenas Costa Rica . - espectacular, el nuevo spa , la comida , las clases de yoga y la alimentación deliciosa.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The retreat gave stellar service. From the moment I stepped to the front desk I was greeted with a fresh juice and cool cloth. I received a tour of the beautiful property and then escorted to my room.
The food delicious, the yoga class was amazing and all of the staff were so friendly and welcoming. Grissela at the front desk packed a beach bag for me for excursions, the 2 chefs I seen the most were very kind and made vegan meals, Thank you Chef Sergio and his apprentice. Big thank you to Gustavo I believe is his name he gave a wonderful tour of the property and was very helpful throughout my stay.
The property is safe the views are breathtaking. Wish I spent more time just at the hotel. It is extremely tranquil and relaxing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was beautiful, the food was amazing, and the staff was very friendly. Everything was personalized, could not have asked for a better stay. They even picked us up at Liberia when our flight plans went awry.
- Emmanuel (10/5): - Breathtaking views, nothing better than waking up well rested to that amazing mountain view.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a wonderful place to stay. Pure beauty. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Best retreat ever, really nice attention and amazing state
- mary (10/5): Relaxing spa hotels with wonderful food. - The Retreat is situated in an area voted to enjoy the best climate in the world! That is debatable but, what is not debatable is the wonder that is the Retreat. We spent five days there, probably not long enough but managed to totally unwind and relax. The rooms and bed are most comfortable and the atmosphere very zen. The staff are all very friendly and accommodating. The food is healthy and delicious but don’t expect burgers and chips here! If you are thinking about coming to the Retreat, don’t hesitate a minute longer.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location but the lack of signs at the entrance make it difficult to find. Also lack of lighting in the parking area made it hard to park and walkways are not adequately lit. We needed a flashlight to navigate to and from our room.
- Kristel (10/5): - Súper lindo. Excelente el servicio al cliente . Instalaciones muy cómodas y limpias. La comida es saludable y muy amena.
- Manuela (10/5): Great place to stay with an amazing view! - Such a beautiful place to stay! I will definitely be back! Very kind and caring people!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was a magical vacation just to detach. We did just one excursion on purpose. The food was amazing( chef Sergio ) Didn’t realize healthy food can taste so good. The staff really goes out of their way to be have a personal touch!
- caycoffee (10/5): - Mere words are insufficient to describe this amazing property!!! From the awe inspiring beauty of the mountain setting, the impeccable design and layout of the property, unbelievable landscaping, the genuinely friendly and helpful staff, to the most incredibly talented chefs I've seen ANYwhere!! THIS is THE place to be. Diana Stobo has set out to create something very special here and she does not disappoint. They have evidently done well enough in their short time (2014) to add on with the construction of a new spa and eventually more loft-style rooms. At the same time they refuse to give in to the pressures of a commercialized hotel property catering to the masses. Instead they remain true to their values and passion to provide the ultimate experience for their guests, and that is a peaceful, beautiful, tranquil space to RESET! (No children allowed here) Don't wait, you have everything to gain by staying at The Retreat. I promise you'll want to book your next stay before you leave!!
- Jennifer (10/5): - What I did like and found unique about this resort was that there were only 11 rooms. Which means the staff were very attentive, and they made sure all of your needs were taken care of. Totally recommend staying in this hotel.
- cefhora (10/5): A little piece of heaven - Wonderful experience we enjoyed in our weekend at this beautiful hotel boutique. The service is outstanding, the chefs superb! And the food exquisite!!! Definitely, this is a place to relax and unwind. I fully recommend it.
- Tanya (10/5): Paradise - Absolutely incredible hospitality, fantastic food, and gorgeous surroundings. Loved it. Can’t wait to return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Personal amable
- Jo (10/5): - This place was amazing!! The staff was wondeful and helpful! We came for my mothers birthday they made her a special little cake that was delicious!! The food was amazing!! They truly make you feel you comfortable. I highly recommend this place.
- Emily (10/5): - Beautiful and very personable staff definitely felt spoiled top notch food delicious
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Such a relaxing and beautiful place. The food was amazing. The staff was so friendly and helpful. I recommend this resort.
- Stuart (10/5): A little slice of heaven in Costa Rica - The Retreat is everything it promises! The warmest and friendliest welcome you could wish for ..... and that goes on throughout the stay. Great comfort in a stunningly beautiful location. And amazing food. Couldn't ask for more.
- New yorker (8/5): TRANQUIL & RELAXING - The hotel is gorgeous with fantastic mountain views. The staff is attentive and the facilities are beautifully appointed. Dinners are a bit pricey but all are fresh and local, though options are few and meat is generally not on the menu. Location is not great considering that there is a very steep drive to get to the hotel and it is challenging driving to and fro in Costa Rica to the tourist areas. I would suggest splitting your stay, half in the forest and half at the beach to avoid taking the car as much as possible. There is uber and it is half price or more compared to the local taxi or hotel shuttle service. The hotel is great if you just want to chill and relax!!!!
- Julie B (10/5): Amazing retreat experience with best food & staff. - This was my retreat experience and was delighted by the place. I see that EXPEDIA rates it at 3 1/2 star but would consider this place much higher. The place is very new and decorated in a calm, simple but yet stylish way. The setting on the side of the mountain offers stunning views and the sound of the forest is so peaceful. I was blown away by the attention of the employees, they are genuine and kind. If you are concern about the semi/raw diet...don't be!! I was so surprise on how good the food is, the Chefs are very creative and will offer dishes with tons of flavour. I think that was one of the highlight of my stay; the excitement just before a meal. It's an open style kitchen and you are welcome to attend some wellness/cooking classes with the Chefs. It's very educative and fun!! I also wanted to visit the idea of doing a bit of yoga while on vacation, and the teachers were also very attentive and adapted their teaching to my level (which was beginners). I am now hooked on this practice and will certainly pursue it...I want to thank the entire team to have made me feel so special and welcomed. I travelled on my own and believe that I made friends for life ....it was just the best!!
