Guest Reviews
- Aria (4/5): Nice patio, mediocre amenities - Ramshackle hotel - when the wind blew everything was shaking. The patio is nice and the breakfast is fine. Parking is difficult but it seems that’s how it is everywhere
- Rüdiger Edgar (10/5): - The Staff was very friendly and helps every time / Das Personal war sehr freundlich und hat immer geholfen.
The Rooms were clean but the equipment is a little bit older and some are a little bit small / Die Räume waren sauber aber die Einrichtung ist etwas älter und manche Räume waren etwas klein. Over all it is very Nice and I'd love to come back / alles in allem ist es sehr schön und ich komme gerne wieder.
Best Regards
- Mehmet Akif (10/5): - .
- ELVIS (8/5): - The staff is absolutely exceptional. Very kind, polite, helpful and the nicest people. The location is pretty good too - about a 15-20min walk to old Funchal. The walk back could be longer due to the uphill but nothing too crazy. Parking can be tricky but I never had an issue parking at the lot that was designated for the buildings but not for the hotel. The hotel could really use an upgrade on their rooms however. Possibly a fan as it can get quite hot. The walls are very thin and you can hear almost every noise if you're a light sleeper. I'm pretty sure the TV in my room was from 1960s. But overall, you get your money's worth. Still a great place to stay because of their amazing staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Bon séjour - Chambre confort simple.
- Emilia (10/5): 10/10 - Amazing stay! Views are stunning and staff were so helpful and friendly. Breakfast was a great addition too. Such good value for money!
- Wendy (10/5): - Staff were great. Good location
- Lanaa (10/5): - Lovely place! Very friendly staff! Amazing view from the terrace 👍 the room is not very big but it was fine for 1 night for us 😊 the room was very clean! Thank you for the great stay😊
- Sarah (10/5): - Staff incredibly friendly and helpful. Great location easy walking distance to town. Great value for money.
- Penny (10/5): - The staff were very friendly and helpful. They were able to organise taxis and have food delivered. For a 3 star hotel the facilities were very good with a bar that opened late. If you want to eat in an area id provided for you to eat a take away which is more pleasant than eating it in your room.
- Stig vegard (10/5): Just like coming home - Had an amazing week 😁 really good atmosphere in this old an charming hotel in the hills above Funchal. The staff is 100 % ❤️
- Cindy (10/5): - The staff is absolutely amazing here! The customer service is superb (yet very subtle). For example, one evening I used an extra blanket and the next day the staff noticed that and brought a space heater for me to use. Another day, the staff brought a container to organize my bathroom supplies. They also kept track of my itinerary and left reminders for me when I had a tour scheduled. All of the staff members that I spoke with were extremely pleasant and nice. I very highly recommend this hotel!
- Petra (10/5): - Die Leute dort, waren sehr hilfsbereit!!! Sehr freundlich!!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff was very friendly and ready to help: I really appreciated it!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Mukavan pieni hotelli, rauhallinen.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A short distance from the town centre 15 mins walk, down hill, allow a few minutes more to walk back uphill. Supermarket close by very convenient.
- Jukka (8/5): - rauhallinen, kohtuu kätevä sijainti, ei ongelmia, paitsi
ikäiselleni toisinaan "liian" jyrkän mäen varrella. no, viikossa
kyl kunto koheni!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Hotellihuoneesta oli hienot näkymät koko kaupungin yli merelle. Ystävällinen henkilökunta. Huone siivottiin joka päivä hyvin. Kelpo aamiainen.
- john (10/5): - Without a doubt the staff/family make this hotel the best ever. You do need a car to really enjoy this place but the extra benefits of this family run hotel makes it worth while. (I would point out that you should really have a car on Medeira anyway to really experience it.) The rooms are not large but adequate and efficient. The public areas are exceptional in terms of spaciousness and what is available (Patio, card room, tv room etc.) Highly recommend Residencial do Vale!
- Resi (4/5): - Clean hotel and room, great view from up the hill, stuff spoke hardly any English, the facilities are quite old, the breakfast had a wide selection but the cold meat had mold on it twice... my ceiling light fused but I got it repared the same day and they even put some candy in my room as an excuse. Mixed feelings about the hotel. As for the price it is okay. Don‘t expect to much.
- Carlos (10/5): - Excelente localisation, calme.
- James (8/5): Good budget hotel, if you’re fit enough. - Pros: clean room, lovely and helpful staff, good breakfast.
Cons: quite small room; location of the hotel itself is very steep. You must be very fit enough to climb up the hill. It’s a 45 degree angled road before you reach the hotel; the internet service is not available in the rooms, only limited to the common living room and immediately outside the reception areas; no fridge nor kettle in room (only by request); rooms not noise proof; key operated gate and rooms (a single key could have made a difference); needs air conditioning especially after a long warm sunny day stroll of the city; not 24 hour help desk can’t ask for something after midnight; need some improvements to give a complete transformation of the hotel in general.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Personal muy agradable y hotel tranquilo
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely, friendly hotel that is ideally situated for exploring Funchal
- Dot (10/5): Great stay at good value B&B - The B&B is a 10-15 minute walk north of Funchal town centre in a fairly residencial area. This does mean it's up a steep hill so bear this in mind if you are on foot! The B&B itself is well run by friendly and helpful staff who spoke excellent English. My room was clean and comfortable with a good shower and I had a nice view eastwards out over the town and Atlantic Ocean (see photo). Breakfast was buffet continental with good coffee and a decent selection of rolls, fruit, cheese etc. There is a small bar by reception where you can get a beer and sit on the terrace. Staff offered to help arrange trips and transfers but I had already organised these before travelling. All in all it was good value for money and an enjoyable stay.
My only minor gripe is not with the accommodation. As I mentioned it is in a residencial area where most people seem to keep their dogs in the back yards and several keep chickens. This does mean it can be noisy with barking dogs and crowing cockerels at any time of day or night, although I did get sort of used to it after a few days!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Hotel on the Hill. - The hotel itself was very well presented on arrival, it has a locked gate that reception can buzz you in and during check in your given keys so can come and go as you please. Checking in was very quick and easy and like most buildings on the island had multiple levels but easy to navigate.
The room was a nice size and I had a lovely view of the city and mountains.
Breakfast was ready on time and never felt rushed.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, Alessandro on the front desk provided excellent information about good but not expensive restaurants, (3 courses and a beer for about 20 euro's), lots of information about the island, booked the tours which were collected at a pre arranged time at the bottom of the hill, about 5 minutes away.
The tours were very good for the most part, I wouldn't recommend the lava caves as nothing really note worthy about them, the East tour and West tours were very scenic and informative and I would highly recommend a Lavada walk (Aqueduct) to explore the centre of the island and see beautiful scenery. For the Lavada walk I would ask for advice if you suffer from vertigo and take a torch as some have low tunnels, but a good day out.
I would place Madeira with it's year round your temperate climate as a place of many things to see but not much to do. Good for a week to 10 day visit and very relaxing. I would also advise taking a hat as it's mainly sunny.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Helpful friendly girls at check in. Quiet area. Good choice at breakfast. Helpful reception staff. Good ahower. Room kept clean . Pretty decorative touches such as little flower arrangements on the tables in the breakfast room
- Ian (10/5): - The hotel is in a very central location, and the staff (particularly Fabio) were extremely helpful in arranging and advising on tours and locations to visit. I would definitely go back and will recommend the hotel to friends and family.
- James M. Fernandes (8/5): - My stay was very good. However we only stay for 1 night
- Pat (10/5): Holiday trip - Lovely family run b&b. Very quiet location.
- Mike (6/5): Pleasant hotel - This was a family run hotel, all the staff were really nice and helpful and seemed to care.
The photo of the hotel on the Expedia site is dated and there’s been a lot of development since, but the area was still residential and we were not disturbed by noise.
Rooms were fine a bit dated I found the bed hard and the pillows poor. There was also a bit of water damage to the breakfast area.
There seemed to be a real mix of quests which was nice and the hotel represented great value
Thanks to all the staff for their hard work
- Steve (8/5): Fine accommodation in a quiet part of Funchal - Apart from the climb up the hill from the city centre over the last few hundred metres-taxis recommended-this was a splendid value for money option from which to explore Madeira.Fabio and his colleagues looked after me very well and the Fennel Candy left in my room on the penultimate day of my stay is very tasty.Very good selection of food for the buffet breakfast
- caroline (8/5): - Nice quiet location, friendly, helpful staff but not for the unfit as the hill back to your hotel is very steep. Value for money.
- miguel (10/5): Great value for the price, close to city centre - The staff was always friendly and helpful.
The guesthouse is well located in the upper part of Funchal. The city centre is within walking distance downhill, uphill it's quite a slope if you're not walking fan. It's also pretty close to highway entrance, so it's a good location to explore the island. There's no designated parking, but we had no problem finding a place very close to the guesthouse.
Room was clean, mattress was (just) ok.
Didn't try the breakfast not the city bus to the guesthouse.
Free wifi
- Flemming (8/5): Flinkt personale - Flinkt personale, god rengøring, simpel men god morgenmad.
- Donald (8/5): Nice hotel in residential experience - This is a great hotel if you don't want to live in the tourist district of Funchal, and a perfect starting point for exploring the city. I was very comfortable there.
- Liz (8/5): NIce hotel with good views. - Fabio, the hotel owner was very helpful with any enquiries in a relaxed and peaceful environment.
- shane (2/5): bad business - never got to stay because plane couldn't land due to high winds so had to return to Manchester so I never managed to arrive but that made no difference to owner who refused to give me money back or part money back or even offer alternative dates. I knew he could of let the room out to someone else as I had booked 11 nights.
- John (8/5): Nice and quiet hotel - If you like to walk, this is nice place. Wiew over the city is beautiful and people and friendly and helpfull.
- Graham (8/5): Cheap and cheerful - If you're looking for good budget accommodation, Residencial do Vale ticks all the boxes. My room had a sea view, was of a decent size and had a basic but functional en suite shower room. The bed was comfortable with extra pillows and blankets provided in the room, though they weren't needed. There's no air conditioning, which you might miss if you are used to it. Continental breakfast, which is included, was plentiful and the bread and rolls always fresh. No tea/coffee making facilities in my room, but there is a bar next to reception where you can get those, or something stronger, pretty much any time. Funchal is hilly. The walk down to the city centre is easy enough, but the climb back up is not for the faint of heart, so if you struggle with hills, take a taxi, which are available round the clock. Fare from the city centre is around €5 (September 2017). Fabio, who seems to be around the reception area pretty much any time, is very welcoming and helpful, and nothing seemed to be a problem for him to arrange if needed. A good, clean, comfortable place and great value if you're on a modest budget.
- Robert (8/5): A sturdy walk but worth it for this comfortable GH - Very good Guest house, located 15 mins walk up from Funchal, the last 40m on the steep side. Great views, both of Funchal from the terrace and most of the rooms. Excellent staff, very friendly and welcoming, lots of information of what to do, where to eat, how to do it, and not just for Funchal, but the entire island! Very comfortable, homely place. Very clean. Rooms more than adequate, with very comfortable bed! Breakfast was the best I'd had in Madeira, not a cooked breakfast but you didn't need it, so much choice, great breads, usual cold meats and cheese, all excellent quality, lots of fruits, cakes. Very nice seating area extending from the Reception area, with inexpensive drinks.
- Joan & Graham (8/5): Fine and friendly little hotel - From beginning to end this hotel served us very well for the type of holiday we wished for which was to see and do as much as possible on the island in a short five night stay
- Margaret (8/5): Very good value. - Lovely simple hotel. Helpful, kind staff although some communication difficulties, partly due to our total lack of Portuguese! Very good continental breakfast included. Room was very clean and comfortable despite fairly hard beds. Would definitely recommend but found the killer hill climb off putting, taxi return from town essential for all but the super fit.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel with amazing views of the coast. - A really welcoming hotel clean and tidy within 15 minutes walk of the town.
- Jona & Mitja (10/5): Pleasan hotel 15 minutes walk from the city centre - The staff (Fabio) was very nice, helpful with the information about Madeira, gave as a map of Madeira. They weren't angry at all when we stayed longer in the room at the day of our check-out. Fabio helped us a lot with car rental and recomendation for restaurants with local specialitites.
We were very happy that every afternoon we came back to the hotel the room was clean, bed tidied up and we had clean towels.
- Lizzy (8/5): Friendly, basic hotel - Set high above Funchal old town with pleasant outdoor seating and very obliging staff. Kept us fit walking back to the hotel (but taxis could have been an option. Good breakfast included with lovely bay views from breakfast verandah. Hotel staff helpful when ordering in evening meal. Happy to supply ice for your own drinks.
Lots to do in Funchal and recommend booking Expedia tours, which included very good lunch & wine.
Pleasant stay.
- Robert (8/5): - Helpful staff. Easy walk into Funchal. Good value.
- Yvonne (8/5): Friendly hotel - This hotel was excellent value for money. We were out and about most days and this hotel fitted the bill of providing a clean room, comfortable bed and good buffet breakfast .Fabio was very helpful at all times(particularly with bus time tables) and made us feel very welcome. The hotel is a steep walk from the centre of Funchal, it took us about 20 minutes.
- Sue (8/5): Exceptionally quiet, friendly, panoramic place! - From the minute we arrived we found the manager Fabio to be one of the friendliest and most helpful people to be at any hotel I've ever experienced. The views from our balcony were spectacular all over Funchal and the ocean, we could see for miles including the cable-car and cruise ships in the marina. This place may be small and up a quite steep road but the welcome and the view from our balcony was worth it. The level of cleanliness was very high. Breakfast was only continental style there was always plenty of it. The only issue we had which wasn't of any particular significance were the early morning cockrels which could be heard in the distance otherwise, we found it lovely!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great find, lovely small hotel - First trip to Madeira & just spent 4 days exploring island, with this hotel as a base. Couldn't fault it, real value for money. Friendly helpful staff - didn't need tourist information as Fabio shared his local knowledge & we saw, ate & drank at some great places. Can recommend B uffet breakfast here too
- griffin (8/5): Nice hotel - Lovely stay, the hotel is in a quiet residential location about 15-20 mins walk from the port and centre, Funchal has lots to offer and we really enjoyed our stay, we hired a car for our holiday and were very impressed with how's beautiful the island is.
- john (10/5): - This is a remarkable family-run hotel! If you want to feel like you are in a real Madeira home, cozy, exceptionally friendly staff, who kept on giving advice for me, patiently, as I knew little about the island on arrival. Fabio is fantastic, speaks English fluently, always there to help you, helped look after my elderly uncle. U cannot get such service from a 5-star corporate hotel. Nice Breakfast.
- Clive (8/5): Value for money - It was amazing value for money
- Verified traveler (8/5): Convenient and clean hotel. - A very warm welcome on arrival. Lots of information offered. Staff always polite and helpful. A good 3*hotel for sightseeing. The only downside was the steep climb back up the hill form the town. However, that had been pointed out before we booked by another review. Great choice of breakfast....
- Anna (8/5): A short stay - Friendly hotel- very clean - short walk from centre of Funchal.
- Felix (8/5): Great value for money! - Very good value for money, good breakfast and very helpful staff (Fabio who never seems to be off). Around 15 min walk from the city centre. The last meters to the hotel up the hill are quite tough but manageable. We would definitely stay here again when stopping by for a couple days. Only small minus was the small showers and some wifi issues.
- jo (6/5): Basic, but reasonable for the price - Arrival was straightforward and Fabio was friendly. Our room was a decent size and clean enough. Breakfast was the same every day but there was a reasonable choice with fresh fruit. The downside was we were right by the residents lounge and the rooms above and beside were quite noisy. On one night at 11:30pm I had to pop out and ask the people in the lounge if they'd mind being quiet. Bed was not overly comfortable but for £20 a night the place was better than I expected.
Other things - hotel is a minimum walk up hill from the main part of funchal. It is quite steep at one point, no problem for us but others may have issues. We also didn't think much of the restaurant he recommended which his friend runs.
- Renan da Rocha (10/5): Feel at home.... - We have stayed in the B&B for 1 week and It couldn't be better.
1 - Location is great, walking distance to most of attractions, supermarkets, pharmacies etc....
2 - Staff is extremely helpful, all the tips given were very good, Fabio, the host is always happy to help with information, he speaks english fluently.
3 - Our room had a big balcony with wonderful view of funchal's mountains and the sea, waking up everyday with that view was a big plus.
4 - The hotel has an outdoor relaxing area where you can order food, drinks and use the internet, prices are very good, 1.00 euro for a local beer (coral) and 2.50 for a delicious hamburger.
5- Had great time at Residencial do Vale and Thanks Fabio and the staff for all the help.
- Marta (10/5): Great little hotel - Lovely little hotel based in the old town , only 10/15 minutes walk from the old town centre. Extremely helpful and happy stuff.Very clean rooms and the lady has even agreed to wash a few items of clothing for our sons as we have run out of clean tops :).
Lovely little cafe-terrace with a very nice panoramic view. Be warn there is a very steep walk up the hill to get to the hotel but most people rent cars or like us take it up as a challenge and claims up. We would definitely recommend it anytime.
- DGB (6/5): RECENT STAY - This family run hotel has a personal touch, the receptionist was particularly helpful and accommodating. The hotel is generally what you would expect for its star rating, the only significant let down was the shower. This was never really hot and sometimes almost cold but also the pressure would fluctuate during a shower and at times was very, very weak. Continental breakfast was perfectly adequate with a range of fresh fruit, meats, cheese and rolls.
- Paula (10/5): Little gem of a budget hotel - Best stay of my entire trip to Madeira. The staff is very friendly and helpful; even gave us complimentary drinks on a couple of occasions. Loved the breakfast, including the great view from the breakfast room.

- Small family run hotel with great views and helpful staff. Very clean; excellent breakfast.
- Egle (8/5): An authentic family-run little hotel - I spent lovely first two weeks of February at the Residential do Vale. This little authentic hotel was peaceful and quiet when I was there, just what I needed! The hotel is a little bit dated, you could say, but clean, homey and well looked after. The location is absolutely brilliant if you do not mind walking up the fairly steep hill for about 200 metres to reach the hotel. The Town Centre, the Old Town and the seafront are all within a walking distance and the most touristy area is miles away! Staff in this hotel were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was reasonable, not an exciting variety of things but good enough to keep you going!
There were a couple of things that were not very accurate in the description. First of all, a fridge and a microwave were not available to have in a room upon request but I was allowed to use the ones in the bar kitchen just next to the reception. There was not a huge amount of free space but it was doable. And second of all, the Internet signal was very weak in my room, too weak for my laptop. There is a cosy lounge where the Internet is available, but again there were good days and bad days and you could never tell why!
On the whole, I am very happy I stayed in this hotel and believe that it offers good value for money.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Small friendly hotel - A stiff walk up the hill from the centre, this hotel has everything you'd expect. Excellent breakfast, sunny lounge area and tables in the garden to chill out. It's possible to catch the local bus up the hill and walk back down if you prefer or there's always a taxi. Local tour organisers will pick you up at the hotel. In a quiet residencial area, this feels like the authentic Madeira.
- Allie (6/5): Good budget accommodation for a few days - If you have any sort of mobility problems, stay away from here, as the last stretch up the hill is murderous. The accommodation is very basic - the wardrobe fell apart, and the shower was lukewarm - but spotlessly clean. Bring earplugs, as the walls are paper-thin, plus there are dogs and cockerels in the area who don't seem to sleep much at night.
The older staff are not overly concerned about their guests, but the young man at reception is a gem - if you need anything, he's the person to go to.
Breakfast was basic but included fresh fruit, which was lovely.
All in all, considering the unbeatable price, I was happy to put up with the drawbacks for a few days; I wouldn't recommend it for more than a week.
- kathryn (10/5): Very welcoming staff and would definitely return. - We had a lovely time in Madeira. The hotel has a family atmosphere and the man in charge was very hospitable and was keen to ensure there were no problems and we had everything we needed. The building in places is a bit tired however for what we paid is good value for money. Rooms are basic but additional items such kettles, irons, etc are provided free of charge upon request. We didn't feel that we needed to request a safe as the area and the hotel feels safe, Madeira has a low crime rate.
There were some language barriers however these were overcome through the use of signs and an online translator, at times using this was very amusing. After using the online translator one day, I thanked the man by typing in that he was a very nice man. He gave a big smile and I think he was very happy with the compliment. It appears to us that he is happy in his work and that he likes to make others happy.
Some of the evenings we returned to the hotel early from the town and enjoyed spending this time sat on the patio terrace, which was quiet and relaxed. The man in charge would often bring us as part of his hospitality small dishes of cooked foods and snacks. The drinks were very reasonably priced.
The hotel is set on a steep hill and therefore you need to be prepared for this but if your hiring a car during your stay this is less of a worry. The hotel has available parking nearby.
