- Junget (8/5): -
- Carl (8/5): Good value, competent staff, nice breakfast - The facilities was nice and clean and breakfast offered a lot of options. Other guests were friendly as well. The reception area staff were a disappointment. Unfriendly, unwelcoming, and they (both day and night person) really seemed like they wanted to be somewhere else. They were competent and got the job done correctly, but cold and seemed to resent being there. Not a great "first impression"!
- Jenivi (10/5): - I am going back to this place. None
- Patricia (10/5): -
- Ben (7/5): -
- Gary (8/5): Very convenient being next to Susie’s - Breakfast area awesome. Breakfast, not the best but filling. Eggs cold and kinda runny. Was really hoping for hot biscuits and gravy. The area seems to be a waist. Man, you should do like others , happy hour. You have a killer bar and snack area that other hotels would kill for. $12 frozen pizzas and beer, $$$$.
- james (6/5): ok - the cleaning lady helped me with running the remote on tv, big thank you breakfast could of been better.
- Sandy (8/5): - Location, breakfast, front desk very helpful Room was only half clean. Bathtub had a large ring around tub and both my husband and I had bits on our arms after waking up
- Richard (10/5): - Perfect location and friendly professional staff All was great
- Marla (8/5): -
- Dominick (10/5): Worth the price of the stay for a hotel with an indoor pool and breakfast ready to eat. - The food was tasty enough to beat a bed and breakfast. It was a good place to stay for a couple nights.
- JessicaUndesser (10/5): Great stay! - Stayed here to go to Cascade Mountain for skiing. Got a double queen room. Very clean, comfortable and friendly. No complaints. Lots of hot water available (which is a pet peeve of mine if the water is cold.) everything worked in the room. The steakhouse right next door made great alcohol drinks to take back to our room. No complaints. Kids loved the pool. Very affordable option. Walmart is also close by. Would stay here again!
- Melissa (10/5): Greatest staff ever! - The people working the front desk were angels Needs a hot tub
- U493WNbrendal (4/5): Not as advertised - No hot tub as advertised. Doors in the pool room just sitting there not connected to anything. Wallpaper falling off walls. Front desk not helpful when asked a question.
- Zhargal (10/5): 👍 - I liked everything .
- Wendy (6/5): Breakfast was ok.same all 3 days we were there no variation love the yogurt machine! - Close to skiing mountain. The room was hot even with temps at 10-15degreees outside and putting a/c on 66 it still felt like 75 in the room.
- Inna (10/5): -
- Katie (8/5): We will stay again the next time we will stay overnight in the area. - It is located at a convenient location. It was clean and quiet. The pool area could be nicer and a hot tub and sauna would be wonderful.

- RandBRanch (4/5): Portage needs a good hotel! - SUMMARY:
Portage REALLY needs one good hotel. By all accounts this used to be it, but lack of investment over many years has taken it nearly to the breaking point. Hopefully management can get their act together and restore it to its rightful position as the best hotel in Portage.
THE GOOD:
The building has good bones. The exterior looks good. Our suite was large and had 3 sinks, which is nice but a little odd given how close together they are. The elevators work well. The wifi worked well. The location and parking are good. Breakfast was adequate, typical of hotels in this class. The housekeeping staff are doing their jobs well, our room was clean (with one exception, see later). The TV in the living room was newish, with modern technology including the ability to cast video from a smartphone or computer. This is always appreciated.
THE BAD:
Many, many maintenance items have been ignored for years. The first thing we noticed was a very large area of peeling paint in the bathroom. It appears that in a previous remodel they painted over a couple layers of wallpaper. This can work, but not if moisture gets in the wall. The wall around the shower, next to the peeling paint, has multiple gaps and holes that should have been caulked a long time ago. I suspect this is what caused the paint to fail. The bathroom fan isn’t sufficient to keep the room from filling with steam during a shower, possibly a ventilation grille in one of the doors would fix that. There are lots of spots around windows and in the corners of the room where paint has failed.
We rented what was described as a Jacuzzi suite. The controls on the Jacuzzi are broken. My impression from other reviews is that they are ALL broken but they continue to advertise Jacuzzi suites. We thought we might just use it as a tub but when we filled it with water there was hair and debris floating in it so we passed on that. The ventilation fan over the Jacuzzi is starting to fall out of the ceiling.
There were holes in the curtains. The bed looked OK on an initial glance but sagged under our weight and we are not heavy people. The tag on the mattress revealed it was manufactured in 2010, so it was 15 years old. This is about twice the normal replacement age for hotel mattresses. The furniture was worn out.
The door to the fitness center was propped open, possibly for airflow. Maybe because of that many of the dumbbells were missing. They had a nice set from 5-50 lb, but all the dumbbells between 10-35 lb - the most useful ones - were missing. Both treadmills were broken. The one on the right displayed an error message. The one on the left started up fine but would pause every few minutes for no apparent reason, without touching any controls.
THE UGLY:
This was a huge red flag to me. When I reported the issues with the fitness center at the front desk the response was that they weren’t aware of the problems because they had not seen them in any reviews. Am I to understand that routine physical inspection of the facility is no longer a thing, and guests are being relied on as unpaid inspectors? That would explain a lot. To me it suggests that management’s attitude is the real problem here.
THE HOPE:
This hotel has a lot of advantages in terms of the structure and location. I hope management can step up their game and invest what it takes for Portage to have a really good hotel again. This will be expensive, it will take way more than a coat of paint. The rooms need to be gutted, the furniture scrapped and all the deferred maintenance corrected. The price for our room was pretty low, I would think a well remodeled hotel could bring higher rates without pricing itself out of the market. Portage needs one good hotel. This could be the top hotel in the area again with some work!

- C8899BEbrendan (10/5): Great stay. Every time I’m in town - Very quiet room. Great breakfast with lots of choices
At check in the two girls at the desk were very accommodating even though they were fully booked & super busy with 2 large groups when I arrived
- Jill (1/5): -
- Cheryl (10/5): - Wonderful!
- Paula (10/5): - Room was clean
Bed was comfortable
Would stay there again
- Jeff (10/5): - Good stay. Nice breakfast.
- Anne (10/5): - The pool area needs attention. The water is cold, and there is a lot of loose debris on the floor of the pool—I am assuming from the construction. I was also sad to see photos of a hot tub online but to get here and see that it has been taken out
- Kathleen (9/5): - It was clean and accessible.
- Michele (7/5): Clean and comfortable. - Location was convenient. Front desk staff were excellent. Nothing to complain about.
- Julia (10/5): - Nice breakfast, morning staff was great,
- Te Slaa (10/5): -
- S1262REjoek (10/5): Exceeded expectations - Last minute booking, couldn't get a hotel in Madison, wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. People were friendly, breakfast was ok, they had pancakes, clean and quiet with hot water and good shower pressure, prefer shower soap that is liquid and not a bar but it was ok
Ask for a top room floor facing the back of the house and you get a balcony with a nice view of the woodlands.
- Brigitte (6/5): - Coming off the interstate I couldn't find the place, they need to put up signs. I was getting totally frustrated
- Beth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jenni (4/5): Disappointing -
- Joanna (8/5): - Good customer service. Clean facility. Liked our stay
- Kevin (9/5): Superb -
- Jordan (7/5): It was exactly what we needed while staying in - The breakfast, coffee and hot chocolate bar were great. Check-in was efficient and easy. We saw a hot tub on the website and assumed it would be there. It was filled in with cement when we arrived.
- Wendy (10/5): - I always stay at the this hotel when I travel home. It's clean, with friendly staff.
- Mary (7/5): Good -
- michelee122 (2/5): Terrible service and bugs in beds!! - We checked in on June 27th very excited to bring my granddaughter to her first concert in Madison. We dropped our bags off in our room (401) and left to eat, returned and while my granddaughter was changing to go swimming my daughter and I noticed their were bugs on the beds, asked front desk what they could do and they gave us a new room (219) we packed ourselves up and went there to find even more bugs. Asked for a refund were told no because we booked through a third party! Had to leave obviously and in the rush left my cowboy boots in the lobby. Called later and no they said no cowboy boots were there. They were very unconcerned about the bugs or helping us in any way!! Very unhappy with a Best Western!!!
- Brenda (5/5): Not that great. - The breakfast was ok. Lacked variety after staying 16 nights. Sausage every day. The location is excellent to travel around the area. The cleanliness of hotel was not the best. It took over 10 days for staff to vacuum hallway. Saw the same dirt and lint walking to the elevator. We asked just once for our room to be cleaned and we only got clean towels. Didn't pick up garbage or change sheets. The window of our room was filthy. Used the pool once and the pool floor was gritty and sandy. We could hear staff complaining and cussing about other coworkers being lazy.
- zipora (10/5): - Property is pretty close to dinning & shopping places. Its pretty close to everything. I like the availability of microwave and refrigerator in the room.
- Heidi (8/5): - Staff were kind. Place was nice. AC did not cool room well.
- Theresa (8/5): - Front desk staff was really nice. Room was very clean. Breakfast was decent. The tv system is a bit dated and was annoying, but would never not stay somewhere because of that.
- Don (7/5): The Portage Museum was really interesting. The docent was really good. Very informative. - Good selection at Breakfast. Better than most Bathroom layout not friendly
- Joycelyn (10/5): Our stay was short, but everything was great. Will definitely return -
- Joshua (7/5): Good - Close to suzies The room advertised looked different
- Tracy (6/5): - Everything was great except for the tattered, dingy towels. They could use some updating.
- Kandi (10/5): - Good location and clean .
- Skoien (9/5): Superb -
- Lynda (8/5): Comfortable bed and friendly staff - The staff was friendly and the bed was comfortable. The work room needs attention.
- Sallie (9/5): Good.will be back - Easy to get to. Clean facility pleasant front desk person. Restaurant across the parking lot That the pool was closed
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Stayed for the weekend to go skiing. Hot tub was broken, but everything else was fine. Great Steakhouse is across the street. Close to other stores and amenities.
- Susan (8/5): Very good - All of breakfast was good have potatoes would be great Pancake machine never worked each time we were there. They were working on but didn't want to wait or come back. Tv remote in room didn't work well. Maybe needed batteries
- Tiffany (8/5): - This property no longer has the hot tub shown in the pictures and that is why we picked it
- Ed (1/5): Disappointment! - Location Had plenty of choices but chose here for pool and hot tub.Hot tub was filled with cement and pool was closed, this should be stated at the time of booking!
- Francis (8/5): - Room was clean and quiet. Breakfast was in top tier of contemporary motels.
- Williams (5/5): We felt safe and the staff worked with us but the hot tub no longer exists. - The hot tub has been filled with concrete and the pool was closed the first day we got there and the pool and hot tub were our main reasons for choosing this hotel and the location.
- Clair (5/5): Passable - Room was as expected. It was advertised that there would be a hot tub in the pool area but when we got there it was filled with concrete. The front desk lady just said it was too much to maintain which I find hard to believe for the rooms. If there’s no tub then I think they should consider lowering the room prices.
- Martha (10/5): - It was nice.
- M1312ROwendyg (8/5): Just passing through - The rooms are clean and comfy. Stayed 1 night and then decided to stay the next night. the front desk clerks were very nice and helpful. Breakfast was good. I would definitely stay there again. This is why I stayed a second night. Felt very safe at night in parking lot. Restaurants and gas station just down the road.
- Rebeccah (4/5): Disappointing - Location The website shows a hot tub, it doesn’t have one anymore. The pool was dirty. The furniture in the room was beat up. The caulk around the shower was black in places. The room was supposed to have a tub. It only had a walk-in shower. The beds were as hard as a rock.
- Bud (7/5): Good - Didn’t try I absolutely hate the small pillows. Just give me 2 regular bed pillows and i would be in seventh heaven.
- Cbenn189 (6/5): Decent hotel. Horrible customer service. - I stayed here for 2 weeks. The room I stayed in was clean, the fridge is not your typical mini you get at a hotel and is larger so that was really nice. The housekeeping staff cleaned the room every day that I did not have my do not disturb sign on. The food for breakfast appeared to be decent, I only tried it on one of the days. The setting and amenities are good for a mid/small town hotel. I travel a good amount and my expectations of a mid/small town hotel are not unrealistic, the reason why it is a 3 for me is because of my staff interaction at checkout. The blonde lady who was at the desk did not have any customer service skills. While I usually let it slide, this was incompetence coupled with rudeness. At checkout I asked her for a printed receipt, she looked in the system and tells me that she can't do it and I need to call for it. I asked her if something was wrong with the booking and she responded that it is because I have a pending charge of nine hundred and change and she can't print until that was cleared. I had prebooked and paid for the hotel using my credit card travel portal so I was surprised to hear that she couldn't print because of a charge, let alone a charge for such a high amount. I asked her if she could give me more information on what the charge was and she didn't know and then she began to get rude, in a louder voice she said "I don't know. That's why I told you to call them".
Lady, why are you working front desk if you cant figure this out. Also, you don't have anyone on your end you can call?
Then I give up because I don't like confrontation. She continues to say "call them". I asked her who I should call, she responds "Donna". Nothing more.
Lady, was I expected to know who Donna was? Why are you so dense?
So I ask her who Donna is and what the number would be. She points to the cards in the other corner of the desk and then proceeds to do whatever else she was doing.
I will have to go back to portage again because of work and even though this best western is only 5 minutes away from my location, I am most likely just going to stay in Baraboo/Dells area (20-30 minutes away) and drive so that I don't have to put up with things like this. I would recommend you do the same until management addresses the behavior of staff like the one who I interacted with.
- Roxane (8/5): Very good - Room was clean and comfortable. Pool area was unclean.
- Tracy (4/5): - Advertised hot tub which is why we went. Got a message at 3:15 the day of check in that hot tub was no longer there. Room had exposed electrical and no smoke alarm. Remote did not work the best.
- Susie (10/5): Very nice place to stay! - The room was updated. Free of bed bugs (I had a very bad experience at another area hotel, twice. Yes, twice, it was terrible). Nothing
- Hayes (7/5): Good - Location There is no working hot tub due to it being broken.
- Sunghee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alena (9/5): Clean spacious rooms, short distance to Cascade mountain; great restaurant next door. - Great location to ski at Cascade / Devil's head mountain. Spacious clean rooms. Great shower water pressure. Quiet (either we were lucky with neighbors or walls are not paper thin as in some other hotels). Pretty big pool. Good standard breakfast, my daughter loved their pancake "conveyor belt" making machine. Excellent restaurant across the street (Suzie's I think). We'll be back next year when we come skiing at Cascade again (just 10 mins to the mountain). Fridge and microwave in the room is helpful if you brought some leftovers from the restaurant. Unfortunately hot tub was not working when we came (Feb 2025). It would be nice to unwind after a day of skiing. Breakfast was good but would be nice to have some more options for fruit. They do not offer luggage storage unless it's a smaller item.
- Kulesa (6/5): Pleasant -
- Connie (8/5): Very nice - The hotel was clean!
- Jefferson (9/5): Would stay here again! - The entire Staff was very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast was very nice with a wide variety of what appeared to be quality food and drinks.
The hotel was very quiet.
The color scheme of the hotel was very pleasing.
The parking lot was spacious. The hot tub wasn't functional.
- Kimberly (10/5): - Nice place.
- Tanya (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (10/5): I’ll stay here again! - This is a nice spot to stay. The rooms are large and the staff are responsive.
- Ruta (10/5): - everything washes perfect
- Ralph (9/5): Superb -
- Chloe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Makaila (2/5): Very poor -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice Place - I've stayed at this hotel a couple of times recently. Each time I've found the hotel to be clean and the staff to be quite responsive to my queries/requests. I would stay here again in the future when traveling to the Portage/Dells area.
- Michelle (9/5): Superb -
- Piotr (10/5): - Was very wekl
- David (6/5): - The property and rooms were quite dated and were in need of repair. The hot tub was broken with no estimate when it would be fixed. The television in my room wasn't working correctly. Maid service did not occur for the four nights I stayed. Carpet in the hallways were stained and dirty. I will not be staying there again!
