Guest Reviews
- Dwight (8/5): - The view is great and the staff is very friendly. The property needs some upgrading but once that is done it can be a very good location
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good place for a relatively good price. Shower heads were quite dated
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The assigned room was poorly arranged and furnished. The bed OK to sleep on but the rest of the furniture was trash. the tv had no knobs, an ancient model and did not work. The fridge was rusty inside and out and was not working and unplugged. Some furniture was missing doors. Balcony chairs were card Table chairs with a nylon cover disguise. construction garbage around the property and next to the entrance. cracks in the floor tile. Unfinished tile shower repairs with 5 different patterns of tile. No drinking glasses or ice or coffee or breakfast accommodation.
we suspect the hotel was overbooked. Why would Expedia be booking overpriced rooms in such a poorly run and poorly equipped hotel. I have pictures to prove all this. Not enough parking available our car had to be parked out of the property overnight
- neil (6/5): BVI visit - Reasonably priced but needs some upgrades
- Anjan (8/5): - Older property has more of feel of guesthouse or dormitory. My room was very spacious with microwave. The shower has shutters which didn't close so there were some flies and bugs but no mosquitoes so it didn't bother me. The balcony was nice but the sliding door was off its wheels so it was very hard to move. Staff is very helpful and accommodated a late check out request. About 10 minute walk to ferry and 20 to the small downtown. In a safe residential area, there is a restaurant a few minutes by foot but nothing else around commercially.
- Deri (4/5): - It had roaches in the bathroom sink and shower the bed was not good shakes
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The hotel seemed to still be recovering from Irma. There were broken fixtures in the room.
- st603310 (2/5): SAFETY CONCERNS - I originally booked this hotel through Hotels.com for a one-night stay. When I checked in, the male desk clerk asked if I was traveling alone. I refused to answer, and he kept pushing the issue. Instead of telling me my room number and handing me the key, he walked me to the room (even though I requested he not do that), and entered the room after me to "turn on the air conditioning." The balcony door did not close all the way and the entry door did not lock securely. I made the decision to find a different hotel as I did not feel safe staying at Hotel Castle Maria. When I checked out approximately 20 minutes after arriving, I was greeted by a different male clerk who became very pushy and rude when I told him I would like to check out of the hotel. He repeatedly asked me where I was going and what hotel I planned to stay at. When I got home from my trip, I filed a claim with Hotels.com who attempted to negotiate a refund on my behalf. The claims representative reported that the hotel manager would not issue a refund because I stayed several hours and left after midnight without checking out or filing a complaint. This is patently false and confirms the unsettling feeling I had during my very brief time at the property. Don't bother with this hotel. There are other options in Road Town. You can't put a price on safety--spend the extra money to stay somewhere reputable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Hotel was located within walking distance of ferries. Staff was awesome!!
- rossl945 (6/5): Good for a night or two - Clean, dated room adequate for a short stay, wouldn't want to make it a base for an extended vacation. Not sure what impact the hurricane has had although indications are that it's one of the few places that escaped major damage.
- Denny (8/5): True Island feel ! - Hotel staff could not be more friendly & helpful. Great food at newly opened third floor restaurant.Excellant view of Road Harbour & Road Town.
- saibot80 (10/5): Hurrican Irma - I would like to point out the fact that we have tried out a couple of low budget accomodations in Road Town. Of all of them, this is by far the best. It's not very fancy, you probably wouldn't want it for your honeymoon, bit it's clean and best value for money. And it has hosts who care about their guests, and that is, on Tortola, not easy to find. We actualy owe Izac & Andrew quite a lot. We booked a room for the upcoming Storm. Nobody knew that Irma would hammer the BVI and that most houses (and lots of accomodations) would loos their roofs, their windows. Nobody thought that the Supermarkets, the Restaurants would be closed for days. Castle Maria kept its roof, its windows and after enduring the 6 hour storm there was a knock on the door and that there was food for everyone who was hungry. And this continued day after day. Whoever was hungry, was invited to eat. No questions asked. Isac & Andrew, thankyou. For realy caring about your guests.
- Blitzkrieg1 (6/5): Adequate - Clean, pleasant hotel within walking distance of the ferry. Not too much, not too little.A place to put your head for the night. The swimming pool is a nice touch, although I personally did not take a dip. There is also a serviceable bar with cold $4 beers.
- 839wendyk (4/5): Low low budget - I wouldn't recommend even if you're desperate. It's like an oversea's low budget youth hostel. The staff however is extremely nice and accommodating. The rate I booked was not honored, I was stuck so I had to pay it. Shady operation. Lots of bugs on the floor and in my bed. Noisy. But the staff is nice! :)
- small head (2/5): Dont go - Entry door not secure, has lock that any body can pick,, room smell of smoke , bath room tile is commimg off...... I could stay no more than one night so i will be calling u expedia for my three day money back refund
- Parallel73 (6/5): Basic not great - Our room was very basic at $500 a week. (you get what you pay for) Bed, tv, small outdoor patio. Ours did not have a kitchenette or even a microwave or coffee pot, just a mini fridge. Our shower did not drain, even after notifying the front desk. We stayed for a week and noticed that every time towels were changed, they were stained, so we used our own. There is a big pool, but we didn't feel comfortable enough to swim in it. It looks like it needs some TLC and lots of chlorine. I only gave it a third star because the staff was very friendly and also because it is a short walk to town and the ferry. Overall, this is a place solely to rest your head.
- Mark (4/5): Very basic hotel - Very basic hotel. Good for a night or two if you need to be close to downtown.
- H (2/5): - No internet provided by this hotel even though it said free WiFi when I was purchasing this hotel. That was quite dissapointing
- nowenab (10/5): Business Owner - My recommendation for this hotel is highly rated. My son n myself took my husband to celebrate his birthday in the BVI . We choose Hotel Castle Maria . The hospitality was great. The room we were given was just right. View from the hotel is fabulous. We were treated nice by Andrew n his team. Thanks everyone at Hotel Castle Maria.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Needs an upgrade - if Breakfast is not being offered then please have utensils available.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Quiet and relaxing will surely return - My experience was great but I expecting room service or dine in
- Olga (10/5): the hotel became like family - very helpfull and friendly staff. Owner of hotel very helpfull, kind and gave a feeling of comfort during our stay.
- ArubAlex (6/5): Low budget, clean hotel - We needed a low budget hotel to spend a night prior to a sailing trip in then BVI's, so we opted for Hotel Castle Maria in Road town. Hardly a castle, but 4 separate beds, clean linen, and a tidy bathroom for a very reasonable price was good enough for us. Staff was friendly, beer was cold and we all slept like babies.
- tristin2016 (8/5): Great Hospitality-Felt like Family - The location of this hotel is excellent. It is just a 10 minute walk from downtown and all major activities in Road town.
The people working at the hotel were like family. For example, I had to check out late because my flight took off later in the day, and the staff let me keep my luggage in my room until I was ready to leave.
The staff also organized an efficient ride to the hotel as well as to the departure dock which goes to St. Johns and St. Thomas.
Very clean and strong good air conditioning...I would happily stay there again!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Very nice staff...however... - Expedia listed this as a hotel with breakfast included. There was no mention of breakfast at check in. The next morning I was in lobby area to access wifi and another person asked if there was breakfast and was told "no". The room itself was worn and mismatched, but bed was clean and A/C made it comfortable. There is no wifi in rooms, only in the lobby, which is advertised correctly....however, the lobby is partially open air and I was eaten by mosquitos any time I went there to use the wifi...and that was after spraying myself down with "off". In addition, most times I walked down to the lobby or past lobby to exit, the hallway typically smelled strongly of marijuana. I'm assuming it was other guests...but it was very strange to have at a hotel.
- anniesgalaxy74 (8/5): We loved it!! Historic family owned Hotel give it a try! - My boyfriend David booked this room during the craziest peak season for the BVIs! This little... Yes older & historic, little hotel! I am sad to see that the Hotel has not received more positive reviews! Give this little gem a try and you will not be disappointed!!
Here are some of the amazing 4-5 Stars quality ratings!
1. Extremely honest and helpful, friendly family and staff! If you have any issues or concerns Isaac will help you out, he's is the Hotel. So I will post mods
2. OUR ROOM WAS CLEAN! :) huge plus from me
3. FRESH CLEAN TOWELS!
4. Working AC plus more!
5. Onsite Bar! & more!!
Thank you Isaac :)
- Verified traveler (2/5): STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE - My stay was terrible, I didn't get the room that I reserved and the mattress was probably older than me and the pillow was big and hard, I requested a softer pillow but didn't get any. They say that they offer continental breakfast but toast, butter and coffee isn't breakfast. The WiFi is located in the lobby area, there's no WiFi in your room. This place is not worth the price that I paid. The service is terrible, the people at the front desk are holding for someone else and they don't know anything to be able to assist you. It was terrible and the room was just dirty and terrible. Whomever reading this don't go to that place
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The hotel was clean and inexpensive. It was further from the centre of town than we expected, but still walkable.
- Charles (6/5): Average accommodation - Not too bad, could of been more accommodating their breakfast was a waist of time toaster not working, lots of room for improvements.
- montrealdoula (6/5): Great pool! Clean room, not-so-clean bed linen, friendly staff - We stayed here for one night after a week of sailing. The room was okay, the pool was great except for some broken glass on the ground under a deck chair. AC worked well, lots of hot water for showering ... can't complain, except it was very expensive for what it was (basically hostel accommodation).
- 948janl (8/5): An eclectic, simple and inexpensive place to stay - We were met at Hotel Castle Maria by Andrew, the "keeper of the castle." We arrived before check in time but as the room was readied, we were all offered a complementary drink. The room we stayed in were simple but clean with 4 twin beds, a kitchen area and a great porch. And, although the bathroom was tight to squeeze into, it was true luxury to the four of us who had just come in from camping at the beach for 4 days. HCM also has a nice little outdoors pool (we didn't use it) The walk into town took about 10 minutes (we walk fast) and from there we were able to explore Road Town. We stayed only one night as we were going from there to Jost Van Dyke and Andrew drove us to the ferry in the morning. Andrew, who is from Guyana, told us a lot about what it takes to get a work visa in the BVI (daunting!). If you are looking for the Ritz, this isn't it. If you are looking for a diamond in the rough, Hotel Castle Maria is your kind of place.
- malcolm (4/5): Convenient to downtown - Welcomed to the Diwali celebration at the hotel which was gracious. However the deal included buffet breakfast and this was not provided.Coffee and toast were offered instead.Pool was dirty and pool furniture needs renewed.Locked doors at night included metal grilles which could only be opened externally so was a safety concern in the event of emergency.
- skybvi (8/5): Nice hotel , pleasant stay - I lived in this hotel on monthly basis.
Its situated near roadtown, capital of tortola. It is very near to ship ferry and market.
Riteway super markets are also nearby. There is uphill slope of around 200 mtr and then comes this hotel.
Common swimming pool which is maintened. Rooms are good and spacious.
Very cheap hotel to stay , inside your budget. choose a room facing the roadtown ship ferry as you can get good view too. Food is not here.
The hotel staff are very helping specially andrew and issac. Very nice guys.
There is a bar too near reception.
Rooster noise wakes you up early :)
Overall a good hotel to stay.
- Mitzi60 (8/5): I highly recommend!!! - OK-this is not the high class Hilton, but we found it adorable. The rooms were clean, the hallway of white tile immaculate. We used the pool at least twice a day the week we stayed here and it was clean and refeshing. The staff was incredibly gracious and helpful in guiding us to places to see, eat and helping us get stamps. The bartender, from Castle Maria, was eating at the same place as we were one night and he bought us a round of drinks!!!
I know that this place sustained some damage during a hurricaine, so they have not fully rcovered, but they make up for a few cracks in the walls with wonderfu customer service!
- gulfislanders (8/5): refreshing - about a 10 minute walk from the downtown core up a bit of a hill, but gorgeous views. nice pool, fridge in room, staff great, restaurant good for lunch. I don't think they serve breakfast. We bought some fruit and yogurt and had that in our room. very economical.
- travlinmel101 (6/5): Staying here is all based on your budget and idea of value. - - - - - - - BASICS - - - - - -
PRICE:
We emailed the hotel in advance for a price quote. Because we were staying for 8 nights, they told us that we qualified for their special rate for staying one week (plus pay for one additional night).
I printed the email and brought it with me. Upon check in they DID HONOR the price that they quoted me (which was significantly less than paying for 8 full nights). If you’d like more details, please feel free to email me.
LOCATION:
The hotel is located very close to many points of interest in Road Town . This was important to us because we did not rent a car. Within a 10 minute walking distance you can find:
- Road Town Ferry Dock
-Rite way Grocery Store
-Several Restaurants/Bar (we went to Pusser’s [see separate review & pics], The Pub [see separate review & pics], and Crandall’s)
-Main Street (has many tourist type shops, post office, bakery) [see separate review & pics],
- Crafts Alive Village (has tourist type shops) [see separate review & pics],
-Wickham’s Cay (has more shops/restaurants, but not as “touristy” as Main Street and the Crafters Village )
ROOMS:
The room was a “typical” hotel room. There was plenty of drawers/closet space (I brought extra hangers) for unpacking. There were enough outlets for camera chargers/cell charges/etc. There was a television with remote/cable. The A/C worked perfectly. There was a balcony with chairs which overlooked the street/Road Bay .
There was a “kitchen counter” area that had a microwave, coffee maker, sink, and a small refrigerator/freezer (they let us look at 2 rooms and choose which one we wanted. The first room we saw had no microwave). There were also a few dishes provided.
The bathroom was a nice size. There was a large vanity with extra storage underneath as well as in the medicine cabinet with mirror. The shower was full sized with a little ledge on the window sill which was convenient for holding shampoo/etc.
- - - - - - PROBLEMS- - - - - -
“You get what you pay for.” We went cheap, so we realize things wouldn’t be perfect…here’s a bit of what we found:
-COCKROACHES. Our first evening in Road Town , we went out for dinner and came back to find little roaches and ants/bugs all on our kitchen counter. We killed them and decided to hide all food in the refrigerator and microwave. That didn’t solve the problem. Every night when we’d come back from daytrip/dinner/drinks there were always a few bugs on the kitchen counter, and one night, a dead roach in the bed. “Luckily,” it wasn’t until the last night that we saw a “full-size” (2 inches long) cockroach on our counter. Upon checkout, we mentioned this to the staff member and they said, as if unsurprised, "thanks for letting us know."
-ROOSTERS. Our room was on the end of the building, located right next to a wooded area which had MANY roosters roaming and sitting in trees. Now, there are roosters/chickens all over the island, but I’m thinking that if you stayed on a more “resort type” property they might control their roosters better. ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT the roosters were crowing. I slept with earplugs.
-ROOM AMENITIES. It took a long time to get hot water in the shower. This wasn’t consistent, sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes up to 10-15 minutes, sometimes I just took a cold shower. The cold water “handle” on the shower was broken; you could pull it right off. You had to line it up just right to use it. There were two windows (up high) in our shower; one of which was broken and would not shut. Flushing the toilet required you to hold down the handle until the entire thing flushed. The patio/balcony doors did not close completely. There was one window in the room that did not close completely. The A/C leaked water on the balcony.
-CLEANING STAFF. Small complaints, but take note - some of the things we had “tied up” in plastic bags to avoid bugs getting into it (i.e. we brought our own plastic utensils, napkins, and paper plates) were thrown out by staff thinking it was garbage, even though it was not in the garbage can. Also, my friend brought her own white washrag with her, and staff took it, (understandably) thinking it was theirs. Travel trip for anywhere could be: if you bring your own rag/towel/etc., don’t bring white.
- - - - - - MISC INFO- - - - - -
The “Fat Cat” Thai Restaurant is no longer in service.
There is a bar, but we never used it.
They just got a new computer for their “internet café” (of one computer), but I think there was Wi-Fi in the hotel (didn’t use it).
The cost for taxi fare between Hotel Castle Maria and West End was $24.00 for 2 people and plan for about 30 minutes.
Parking is very limited, and VERY tight.
- - - - - - RECOMMENDATIONS- - - - - -
If I had some friends (ages 30 and under) who wanted a cheap place to stay that's convenient, I would suggest Hotel Castle Maria, and warn them that they may encounter the above. If I was going to make a suggestion to say, my parents, I would tell them to NOT stay here. I would not suggest this place for people on a honeymoon/romantic getaway, even though it's cheap, there's no ambiance/characteristics that make it romantic and memorable. I probably would not suggest this for families either; however, hotel castle maria may have bigger/better rooms for larger parties. Personally, I don't think I would stay here again. There are two other hotels right in the same area, "Sea View" and "Fort Burt," that I would probably check out.
- RobbArkansas (4/5): Don't stay here - Arrived and they didn't want to honor the rate he had confirmed with an e-mail. It was down hill from there. No place for breakfast except walk all the way into town. No coffee. A/C didn't cool room becaused the windows leaked so bad.
Find somewhere else even if you have to pay more.
- Jeannius (8/5): Exactly what I wanted - Stayed here for a week in January. Was on business and all I wanted was a clean, quiet, comfortable room. Got exactly that plus friendly staff and a good Thai restaurant on site all at very reasonable price.
- sarahcay123 (4/5): Just okay, wouldn't recommend - Smelled like curry, rooms were dirty, not clean. They thought a single bed qualified as a double and try to charge us a different price from when we booked it.
Pro: Steve, he is "the taxi" for the hotel. He is great, better rates than other taxis there, nice and fun.
- sailorFlorida (4/5): Sailing Family - We recently did a two week bareboat charter in the British Virgin Islands. We booked one night at the Hotel Castle Maria prior to our charter. Upon arrival the Hotel refused to honor the price quoted, for three people, when we made the reservation. We had the reservation number and the original price quote but it did not matter to the staff. The desk clerk was giving us a room for 4 when there was only 3 in our party which was allegedly the reason for the price increase. There was no room for discussion with the staff and when we asked to see a manager none were available.
We stayed the night and voiced our displeasure about not honoring the quote but it fell on deaf ears. When we again asked for a manager no one was available.
We later met a family of four staying there for a night but had not checked in yet and told them of our incident. When we saw these people the next day they were charged $45.00 less for a room for four than we were charged the night before. Thier inconsistacy in pricing and obviuosly lack of caring puts this hotel on my "buyers beware" list
