Guest Reviews
- Angela (10/5): - Such an incredible stay! The staff were beyond accommodating, always making me feel so welcome. The surroundings were breathtaking, and the on-site restaurant was a true highlight. The breakfast buffet had absolutely everything you could imagine, something to please everyone. Dinner was consistently amazing, every single night, and the views and sounds of the jungle during each meal was a dream come true for me!
What stood out most to me was the kindness of every single individual I met on the staff. They were not only attentive and friendly, but by the end of my stay, they truly felt like family. Their warmth and care turned into one of the most comforting and unforgettable stays of my life.
The complimentary transportation to and from Ubud Center was such a thoughtful touch! The spa treatments were absolutely luxurious, making every visit feel like pure indulgence. Both pools offered the perfect escape from the heat, surrounded by the most breathtaking jungle views. And just a short 5-minute walk away, Pepito supermarket made it easy to grab fresh fruit and little treats, so convenient!
I will absolutely be back, and I can’t wait for my family to meet Katut, Karsana, and Krisna, their kindness made my stay unforgettable! I miss you all soo much, see you soon!
- Richard (10/5): - This place is an absolute surprise in a quiet reserve area which brings absolute relaxation away from the hustle bustle of the city.
- kamran (2/5): Worst stay of my bali tour - Jungle retreat is really junhle, no one cares, receptionist can not speak english. Beds are dirty and shower water is full of dirt.
All my stay there was no wifi and i was cut off eorld when in hotel as mobile data was not working too.
The quality of food at resturant sucks.
The only positive thing was to chevk out if this god forsaken hotel.
Pl. Donot stay at jungle retreat side of this hotel.
- Juan (10/5): - Awesome resort!!
- Bina (10/5): - Very lovely staff, always helpfull. Good food, great views from the hotel.
- yusuf (10/5): - Great place to stay.
- Mark (10/5): - This property has a beautiful setting overlooking a lush valley. There are so many pools we virtually had one to ourselves. The staff are so helpful and friendly. The room was large and well appointed, including a generous balcony with a lovely view, covered so we could even sit out when it was raining.
The only downside is that the walk between the room and other facilities is in poor condition and smelly in parts.
- Verified traveler (6/5): The Jungle retreats.. - Rooms and views are fantastic. Room cleanliness and room service is excellent.
Restaurants were not clean including breakfast area apart from Japanese restaurant ( acceptable).
Breakfast food quality not great.
Roof top pools were unswimmable. Full of jungle flora and not maintained.
Bar pool was ok.
Paths between buildings are precarious and slippery. Only safe after rain with butler buggy.
Again rooms are great and views outstanding but the hotel is a 15 minute taxi outside Ubud which is the real attraction here with excellent shopping.
In hindsight would have stayed in town for convenience
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very peaceful. Staff were extremely helpful and happy. Would definitely go back again.
- Omneya (4/5): - The only good thing about this hotel is the nice view of the jungle and the friendliness of the manager. Other than this, everything else was disappointing. The decoration is depressing, the level of cleanliness is below average, the staff is not qualified to deal with tourists, the hotel is in poor area and far from the city center which makes it difficult to commute. Overall it was a bad exoerience. We checked in for one night only then left to another hotel.
- Nicole (6/5): - The resort seemed liked it needed to be renovated. The areas that
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It was in the “jungle”
That it wasn’t a jungle!!!!! A jungle has in my opinion all kinds of animals.... this hotel is in the middle of a village where the people keep a lot of roosters which are calling each other all day long!!!
- Mark (8/5): A fading giant - Hotel is showing signs of wear and tear. Whilst it is obviously hard to maintain a hotel in a jungle setting, there are some basics that could be improved. But it still holds a certain ramshackle charm.
- Thomas (6/5): - Bathtub was dirty. Facilities was nice but elevator smelled rusted. It is too far from center of town. Staffs are super friendly.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is such an exotic place the memory of the jungle view from the restaurant is Indelible in my mind
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Kupu Kupu Barong is perfect place to relax and enjoy nature in a quiet and serene jungle retreat. All staff members are welcoming and hospitable. Many places to visit in the island.
The only comment is the bed that was too hard for my back. The staff provided an inch extra cushion as wide as the couch width which was not comfortable. I kept waking up late at night from back ache.
- JULIEN (8/5): SPA++ - Service and # as explained by most
Top was the spa service quality. True professional massage be it more expensive than dowtown
- Ally (10/5): - Staffs are friendly and very helpful. We love the environment of the hotel itself. Unique experience. Will definitely go back again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful atmosphere, great views and very friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice Eco Resort peace and quiet - Great environment and vibe with nice view. amazing there is hardly any mosquitoes.
well kept garden and trees. But the breakfast is average.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Service was amazing. Hotel is a bit older and hotel food expensive.
- Mark (8/5): Nice facilities, beautiful room need to work on th - The checkin was great with a nice drink. The room ready on time, just. Unfortunately bed was not made just pulled together. We asked for a taxi to be arranged for 3:00pm to take us to wedding. It was twice as expensive as a basic taxi. Also car didn’t arrive and the concierge has to arrange something after waiting 20 minutes. Room was a little noisy being close to reception.
Breakfast was good with high quality food. Checkout process a little slow.
- Victoria (10/5): Beautiful jungle boutique hotel! - This hotel is so special and amazing! The people that work here are super friendly and warm, the good is Fantastic. You’re literally in a hotel in the jungle! How cool is that? There is a spa, 3 pools and a free shuttle into town. My only complaint is that the pool closes at 6pm. I wish it was open later!!!
- CHEYANNA (2/5): - THEY HAVE DIRTY FILTY BATROOM/LOTS OF MOSQUITOS. STAFF FRIENDLYNESS IS OKAY.. DURING BREAKFAST LOTS OF FLIES...
- Verified traveler (10/5): amazing stay - our stay at the hotel was amazing. the staffs are really great and attentive. the hotel was located quiet a bit from the city centre, but the hotel does provide shuttle bus which you have to reserve first. the location of the hotel is perfect if you’re looking for a getaway from city life, it’s very quiet. since the hotel is surrounded by nature, it’s normal to have a bit of insects but the hotel does provide insect repellant if you need it. they’re great with the details, so if you need anything you can just inquire with the staff i guess. looking forward to go back if have the chance.
- Jean-Sebastien (8/5): - The hotel is good, rooms are clean and breakfasts are ok. I find it over rated for a 5 star hotel, it’s a good 4 star hotel. The value for the money paid is not very good.
- Redtree (6/5): - We were told the resort was started with villas only which means it was for higher end consumers, and due to the high demand a few years ago they started to build a separated building with multiple hotel rooms. It is actually not too bad but the bathtub construction is wrong, the water leaks to the bath floor at every shower; hotel staff explains the bathroom was design for honeymoon! Doesn't matter what purpose it is for, it needs to function right! I also had a not-so-good experience with their spa massage, the lady did my massage rushed me out the room under the condition that I was not informed I only had certain time allow in the bathroom and dressing room. I told them in the beginning I needed to shampoo and bath after the massage because I needed to attend a dinner after, if I knew I was only allow certain time then I can manage my doing! They even chitchat behind me after I rushed out. I totally think it is an intolerable behavior!
- Bikramjit (10/5): Good place for luxurious stay - It's great place, the beds need to be more comfortable. Spread of continental food could be a real delight to add on
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice hotel, stunning views, rooms and facilities are just a little tired
- Ragab (8/5): Beautiful jungle! - Great and very pleasant staff. Amazing place with beautiful views. However, food is very expensive. A small bottle .lof water in one of their restaurant cost about $4.
- Claude (6/5): Good and less good - Slightly disappointed by this short stay (1 night)
Positive - perfect for resting in quiet and green jungle environment, very smiling and helpful staff, qualitative breakfast, 3 swimming pools, great views on the jungle from terrace, good and testy food in restaurants.
Negative - Our family ground floor room was not pleasant : a little natural day light, too small space for 4 persons, one added extra bed for the 4th guest, buildings quite old. Fine for 1 night only. By the end no added value for high rates. OK for 2-3 days not more.
- Robert (10/5): Great Resort! - This was a fab place to stay. Great service, beautiful room and stunning location. Definitely a great place to chill and relax. It has a free shuttle bus into Ubud about 20 minutes away, which is worth a visit and the Monkey Forest is a must!
- Rebeka (10/5): Absolutely lovely!! - I was blown away by the service, cleanliness and overall beauty of this hotel.
From the moment I arrived I was greeted with a lovely drink, many smiles and a welcoming vibe.
The room was lovely, super clean and very comfortable bed. Having your own private balcony is lovely to wake up to in the morning.
The service here was IMPECCABLE. The best I have ever experienced. The staff seemed genuinely happy to help and make sure your stay is perfect. And they are just so so sweet.
It's about a ten minute drive to town, and they have shuttles every hour so that was nice. They also help you with spa bookings (even outside of their own).
The only thing I would have changed was the food. Breakfast was great, but lunch and dinner was just ok. Wasn't blown away which was a shame as there is nothing close by, so if you are already back from town and get hungry, your only options are the three restaurants at the hotel.
But this was a wonderful experience and I can't recommend it enough!!
- ash (10/5): Excellent hotel, fantastic base for trips of centra - We had hotel room, was excellent, roof tops pools and restaurants wonderful settings for meals and sunbathing. Staff excellent
- Martin (10/5): Nice hotel in the jungle - A really nice and calm hotel in the jungle. Excellent restaurant overlooking the treetops.
- Selma (10/5): Jungle Retreat - The place to go!! - Our experience was absolutely fantastic. The hotel is stunning, clean, super friendly staff with a view to die for!! We were sad that we had to leave but we hope to go again.
Totally recommended 100%
- darci (8/5): First time to Ubud - Retreat very private and beautiful. there was a bit of confusion upon our check-in but the staff was able to change it to the room I originally booked on our second night stay. grounds are gorgeous. Close to central ubud and the free shuttle is nice. We wished the pools stayed open longer though. Closing at 6pm is way too early. We suggest hiking mt batur and also doing the hidden canyon hike. Both are awesome.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Decent experience - Great facilities provided all around. Design of the rooms seems to be a tad dated. Lighting in the rooms could be improved too. Very friendly staff, but felt they could loosen up a little, their formality was edging on being almost mechanical at times. All these nitpickings are relative to the price they are charging in the ubud market.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing experience. The staff was terrific and the hotel is beautiful.
- SP (10/5): Terrific hotel and lovely staff - Beautiful hotel, loveliest staff. We spent 4 nights in ubud and we did not have one complaint about this hotel. The staff were so nice and accommodating. The decorations were beautiful and the hotel went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful jungle setting - Some of the nicest people and the best service you will find traveling anywhere! An amazing experience among a fascinating culture. The jungle setting was awesome as were the views from the main dining area. Highly recommended!
- ahmed (10/5): Hidden gem in ubud - We selected this place for our honeymoon. From our reception to our good bye it was an amazing experience. The hospitality, facilty, friendliness and environment was beyond expectation. My wife was delighted that i found and choose this place to spend our special days. Thanks to all their team members for their hard work and smile.
- Tom (8/5): Great jungle location - Lovely hotel set in the jungle. Service could not be faulted. We visited in Feb (low season) and we're pretty much the only guests there - which meant we had the three swimming pools, and 3 restaurants to ourselves most of the time.
The hotel is about 20mins from the centre of Ubud by taxi - the hotel runs hourly shuttle buses or taxis are fairly cheap (once you barter)
- Arundhati (6/5): - Hotel was average definitely not 5 star. The bathroom did nit havea door and hence travelling with kids, this was difficulty
- C J (10/5): Special retreat - A wonderful retreat, a lovely way to escape reality
- Kevin (10/5): Great place to stay - We were given a free upgrade when we arrived to a villa with loads of space and great view
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location and friendly staff highly recommended
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing hotel and super friendly staff - Cant ask more :) very friendly and welcoming. Very professional and helpful. Amazing morning view. Missig variety for breakfast but still yummi.
- Amelia (8/5): Overall a great resort! - Jungle Retreat was filled with surprises from the moment we arrived. Guests trying to reach the hotel should know that in Ubud it is called Kuppa Kuppa Barong not Jungle retreat. Once we figured out we were in the right place we were greeted with fresh flower lays that smelled so nicely. We took a buggy to the lobby (a bumpy ride that reminded us of a universal studios ride) which was beautifully decorated. Our room was really lovely too, situated in a different building with its very own concierge. The first staff me went who checked us in did not tell us very much about the resort (really 2 hotels owned by the same company sharing a large property), but Ayu came to the rescue and answered all of our questions. We came to find that the resort had 3 restaurants. La View served a delicious breakfast though service was slow. The sushi restaurant had some of the best sushi we have ever tasted and we know good sushi! We were also surprised to find that one of the many pools was directly above our room and we were awoken with loud noises early in the morning. We alerted the manager and were switched to a much nicer room, given a cake made out of watermelon and offered a special romantic breakfast on the pond (see pic) free of charge (normally an extra $30 USD) to make up for the bad experience. at first, we thought it would be difficult that the resort was 20min drive from Ubud but we came to realize that this was a blessing as Ubud is overrun with tourists and very loud.
- Jodi (8/5): Amazing jungle experience - This hotel is attached to kupu kupu baring. Amazing hotel with excellent staff. Not a bad view anywhere in the resort
- bhullar (10/5): nice hotel close to the city - amazing experience at kupu kupu barong. Restaurants on site were amazing, staff was exceptional. Very close to Ubud.. hotel provided free shuttle.
- Rachael (10/5): Perfect retreat week - Absolutely loved this hotel! The perfect place if you want to relax and have a chilled week. The staff were friendly and helpful always checking if we there was anything we needed. The hotel is in a quiet part but only 10-15 mins from Ubud centre (the hotel offers a free shuttle service) and there's always plenty of activities near by.
There was a good choice of food across 3 restaurants and all really reasonable. We also had breakfast & afternoon tea included in our room rate which was delicious and always had plenty of options. Really enjoyed the stay here, would definitely return and recommend it to anyone that wants a laid back trip.
- Beth (10/5): Incredible views! - I will stay here again! The setting of this hotel with the jungle views is outstanding. Every staff member is so genuinely friendly, polite and accommodating. Yoga in the morning was a huge bonus for us. I would chose the villas with the private pool for the experience.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice, nothing exciting. - It is good for the price we paid. We booked this hotel because we thought we were getting a 5 star hotel for a 4 star price. But, you pay less for the room and pay 5 star price for everything else. I would pay more and get a true 5 start hotel.
- Janelle (10/5): Jungle Retreat lives up to its name - We had a beaut stay at the Jungle Retreat Hotel. Stunning location and beautiful views. Very friendly staff. The hotel is about 10mins out of Ubud but we liked that. We hired a scooter and rode in and out of town, but there were shuttles available on the hour from 9am to 6pm if required.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent days at Ubud... - Staff attitude and their hospitality was excellent and commendable....
- Gurpreet (8/5): Nice place - We were there in Ubud for 2 days out of that stayed one night at jungle retreat, very cooperative staff, it's complex which has 3 hotels in it variety of things to see and experience in the complex. Overall it was really a good experience in Jungle retreat.
- Shannon (8/5): Perfect jungle retreat, if you end up in Ubud - Jungle retreat sums up our stay. We loved our beautiful room, so many wonderful details, exceeded our expectations, delicious restaurant food, comfortable accommodations, L'Occitane spa on-site, great service. Wouldn't recommend the gelato on-site, definitely take advantage of the free shuttle service to central Ubud during the day to do some shopping or visit the monkey forest, otherwise enjoy the hotel and check out a yoga class!
- Dasha (6/5): Tired Jungle Retreat - We stayed at the jungle retreat for 4 nights, we had a pool view room which was in a 2 story building that consisted of 8 rooms in total. The room is very spacious but tired looking. The bathrooms in particular are in overdue for a renovation. The toilet flush button kept falling off the wall, the shower head sprayed water in all directions and most days the shower water had an awful smoky smell. The first night we arrived it rained through the night and the gutter on the building was blocked right outside our window, it was like sleeping next to a waterfall. The room was cleaned every day to a high standard. We had dinner at the restaurant on the first night (first and last time we dined there) the flood portions were small and a little bit expensive for what we got. The buffet breakfast was the most disappointing part about our stay, there was very little variety and what was there seemed very basic and bland. The hotel provides a shuttle into the city as it is a good 15 min drive into centre and goes once every hour. The shuttle only takes 7 people so book in advance. The last shuttle back is at 6.30pm which meant we had to catch a taxi back to hotel every night after dinner. I would recommend renting a scooter for your entire stay, then you won’t have to rely on shuttle times and pay expensive taxi rides back to hotel. I would not recommend to do your washing at this hotel as they charge an arm and a leg to have it done! Overall we probably would not return to this hotel
- J M (8/5): Quality hotel but feels remote and dull - It's a nice hotel/eco resort approximately 4km outside central Ubud, located as the name suggests on the outskirts of the jungle.
Rooms are very nicely decorated in Balinese style, and the service is very friendly and accommodating. The hotel has most of the things you'd expect but really not much to do on site, a few small pools and a gym is it. Hourly shuttle buses run to Ubud centre but stop at 6pm. Just getting dinner away from the mediocre hotel restaurants can be a bit of a hassle. Best choice if you want peace and quiet by the pool or book day tours with hotel pickup.
Plus for good service and nice decor.
Minus for mediocre restaurants, remote location and roosters waking us up at dawn every day.
- hua (10/5): Perfect hotel for ubud experience. - Excellent hotel. Staff was amazing. Room was beautiful. Plenty of activities offered.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fun in Bali - Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast spread was the same everyday and ants were all over the tables were the food was put on. Beautiful grounds and room was great too. The bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a half wall. Not a great set up if you are traveling with a friend. Far from downtown but there's a free shuttle to the all the fun.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice, quite and peaceful hotel - We like this hotel with such a nice quiet and peaceful environment, the staffs are friendly, but just the price is a bit too expensive, we think there are much better hotel for the money we spent with more facilities and same environment in Bali.
- Narinderjit (10/5): Jungle Retreat Ubud stay. - We stayed in the deluxe suite room 105 for my fiancees 30th birthday. The hotel is stunning, quiet and peaceful, the location and views to the jungle and river are unbelievable, you simply cannot stop taking photo's. There are 2 pools and they are clean and quiet. The Balinese food served at the hotel restaurants are amazing and the staff are exceptional and look after every one your needs. Complimentary tea and cakes are served in the afternoon, which refreshing in the afternoon heat.
There is a free shuttle bus which takes you to ubud every hour until 6pm, taxi's are cheap enough for your return around 40 to 50 thousand idr. Ubud is lively but stunning, lovely roof terrace restaurants and little cafes and bar's. The lotus restaurant has a great view of the lotus temple for lunch and in the evening has a traditional Balinese show which was popular.
I would definitely go back to the jungle retreat kapu kapu barong, I would highly recommend this if you are looking for peace tranquillity,1st class food, service, and exceptional staff. Thank you kindly to everyone of the staff at Kapu Kapu and thank you for the suprise birthday cake and complimentary bottle of wine.
Kind Regards Narinder & Ant, Nottingham, UK.
- Pixel (10/5): Nice hotel with charm & character - Jungle retreat was great charm. Guests were able to be immersed in nature (exactly what we wanted).
The whole compound was very big, thus buggy rides are sometimes inevitable to get from one place to another.
- Helen (10/5): Wonderful Experience - Stunning setting; the staff were the epitome of customer focused and provided exceptional service. In particular we found Sumandi to be outstanding.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Short stay in Ubud - We booked Kupu Kupu for two nights at the end of our stay but wishes we had spent much more time in this area rather than Seminyak, much more interesting and lots to do. The hotel was fantasticand not as remote as I had initially thought. The pool is small but sits on the roof top with a fantastic view and the rest of hte hotel is immaculate, staff wonderfully friendly and helpful. The centre of Ubud is convenient but a short drive away (1700,000 idr with the hotel taxi but 400,000 if you get one in town). We hired a local driver for a day tour at 600,000 idr as apposed to 1 million from the hotel and the driver was fantastic). The prices in the hotel for meals etc are inline with UK rates but this is hugely out of line with prices outside of the hotel so the advice is eat out..you'll get a lot more for your money and experience ubud at the same time. :)
- Leyla (10/5): Nice get away - We needed a quiet holiday, the location seemed right and i was lured by the big discount
On arrival (though it was at 2am) the reception was so welcoming, the treatment during our stay was 5 start
The resturants on the property had delicious colorful menu
And the location turned to be strategic to cover all island's attractions
- david (10/5): luxurious - Excellent hotel, we had a very comfortable stay. Very well organised, clean and professional. The main restaurant is quite awesome, you can have breakfast watching the jungle very high.
- Andrea (10/5): Didn't want to leave! - Fabulous place. Located in the jungle but easily accessible to ubud town by shuttle or taxi. Staff were beyond wonderful. Couldn't rate this place higher. We extended our stay by 2 nights. Very sad to leave!
- Kate (10/5): Fantastic stay...will be back in the future - What a great 4 nights at Kupu Kupu. Such a relaxing stay in the jungle. The ambiance, the setting, the pool are beautiful..The La View restaurant has stunning views..enjoyed my dinner there and high tea...Also enjoyed having my complimentary breakfat in my room especially since I had the flu and a sprained wrist...the staff was so caring and understanding. The young man who drives the shuttle bus to town so knowledgable and kind. Love everyone's smiles and their great customer skills and their willingness to teally get to know you. The room has beaugiful decor and loved my gift. Loved the kimono robes so I upon checking out I purchased two. Can't wait to be back next year Kupu Kupu Barong!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Relaxing stay at Jungle Retreat by Kupu Kupu Baron - We really enjoyed our stay at the Jungle Retreat by Kupu Kupu Barong.
Built facing the jungle, amazing landscapes and secluded from transited roads, this is truly a hidden gem. Our room was spacious, cozy and we got fresh flower petals arranged on our beds which made us feel nicely welcome. Additionally, we enjoyed the spa by l'Occitane where we relaxed with an amazing massage and impressive views of the landscape.
Amazing environment. Great facilities. Great service. Hope to return one day
The staff was really friendly and welcoming.
Spa by L'Occitane was a really superb experience
- Female (10/5): Pampered experience in the peace of the hills. - Our week at Kupu Kupu Jungle Retreat was perfect in every way. The hotel/resort was excellently run and the staff were always delightful to deal with. There was never a moment when we felt disappointed in our choice. I had said before we arrived: " You know, you book an illusion when you book a resort holiday", but I can now say that the delights offered at Kupu Kupu were no illusion. I would recommend this place to anyone who wanted to stay outside of Ubud, but with very easy access to Ubud, and who wanted to have a superb relaxing holiday with no stress.
- Mike (8/5): Mountain retreat - Clean and stylish, 3 restaurants and pools to choose from.
