However, the room was rather small, and more like a Japanese "business hotel". The price was a little expensive, given the quality of the room. Breakfast was very average, and the selection limited. Hokkaido is a centre for dairy products and well known for its butter, but the buffet only offers margarine.

- Tomohiro (6/5): コスパ最高 - 釧路駅からは近いですが、大通りからやや離れたところにあり暗いので不安になりますが、ホテルの上にホテル名がしっかり照らし出されているので大丈夫。予想通り静かです。近くにローソンがありますが、しばしば歩きます。ロビーは狭いですが、フロントの方は非常に優しいです。ウエルカムコーヒーもあります。部屋は狭いですが仕方ない感じです。机、洋服タンス、トイレ、バスは古いです。朝、お湯がでるのに時間がかかります。アメニティーは揃っています。テレビのリモコンのスイッチが押しにくく、チャンネル、音量の上げ下げの反応が遅いのが気になりました。枕や加湿器が廊下に置いてあり自由に部屋に持ち込んで使用できるのがよかったです。

- Neil (8/5): Quaint Businessmans Hotel in Kushiro business area - To be clear - this is a businessman's hotel located in the business district. We used it for a quick one night stop over so it was fine for us - however, perhaps not the best option for tourists (although it is near the JR Kurshiro station). There are NO conbinis within easy walking distance so you would be well advised to make use of the buffet breakfast which, at 800 yen, was good value. The only eating places in the evening are izakya (stand up bars) which were solely for business people. No English menus available. Free car parking is available for hotel guests in two parks just across the road from the hotel. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful although with limited English. The overall condition of the hotel is not new but has been well maintained and was very clean. Bed was somewhat hard but that might be a personal preference. Good onsite laundry facilities. Most importantly - there is nothing vaguely tourist related in the nearby vicinity.

- xClark-Griswoldx (6/5): A very poor welcome to Kushiro - I’m on the second night of a two-night stay at the Area One Hotel in Kushiro, and honestly, I’m looking forward to checking out. I should preface this review by saying I live in Japan, and have lived here for half my life, more than twenty years, and I speak Japanese. On the day of check-in I drove nearly 500 km from Sapporo. The hotel was easy to find, just a few blocks from Kushiro train station. The car park is across the street from the hotel. After driving all day I was happy to arrive. I walked in with my overnight bag, greeted the receptionist in Japanese and gave her my name. The receptionist answered “Passport please.” This is a common question, and a recent development since the tourism boom that began in Japan about ten years ago. In other words, they didn’t used to ask for it. As a permanent resident here, I gave my normal response in Japanese, “I am a permanent resident.” The implication is, “I live here. I don’t carry my passport around with me.” That almost always suffices since she could see my Japan address and credit card details on the computer, had she bothered to look. But, no. She then asked to see my zairyu card, the card issued to foreign residents by the Justice Ministry, something legally only the police and government officials are supposed to be able to request. I refused. She said that the hotel policy was that foreign residents must show this card or she cannot check me in. Now getting angry, I refused again, saying this hotel is the first to ask to see that card and I already pre-paid in full. And I asked to speak to the manager (to whom I was about to give an earful). She said there was no manager today. Instead, I offered to show her my drivers’ license, and did. But, I asked her if she checks the id of her Japanese guests. From staying at hundreds of hotels here, I already know she doesn’t. I’m a foreigner. I must be a criminal. That’s the implication of all of this. I am not a tourist. I live here. I speak, read, and write Japanese. I own property here and am in a high-status position in this society. If you choose to assume I am a criminal simply on the basis of me not looking Japanese, you can expect my reaction to one of anger. Had this been a positive encounter I would have enjoyed this hotel. The rooms are small but clean and comfortable. The walls are thin, and I could hear the guy in the next room snoring. But, the price point for Kushiro was good, and if you’re lucky you may get a quiet stay. But, until this hotel’s policy changes towards foreign residents, I will not stay here again.

- Yi (8/5): - 酒店的位置比较方便，距离火车站步行五分钟，周围有著名的钏路食堂和几家居酒屋（但是不接纳儿童），火车站也方便用餐。酒店服务很好，工作人员虽然 英文一般，但非常热情热心。早餐很丰盛，能想到的基本上都有。还有一点优势是可以免费洗衣服（洗涤剂自带或购买，50日元一份），烘干30分钟100日元，太实惠了。缺点是房间的床实在太小，双人床只有1.2米左右。另外卫生感觉一般，特别是地毯和毛毯感觉不是很干净。还有就是隔音一般。

- JB-in-SB (8/5): Great little hotel in a depressing town - My husband and I really liked the Hotel Area One Kushiro, where we stayed for 3 nights on the first stage of an 8-day Hokkaido road trip. It's a small hotel, with rooms that were clean and nicely decorated, a modern and comfortable lobby, and staff that were friendly & eager to please. The only negative about the hotel is its location in the Kushiro downtown, which is, in a word, depressing. I recommend buying the hotel's room-with-breakfast package, because there are so few places to get any breakfast within a 30-minute walking radius. We found exactly 3 that were open: a Tully's near the izakaya-entertainment district, plus 2 little places (a panya and a cafe) located inside the Kushiro train station. As for shops and things to do, well, forget it. Maybe it's Japan's demographic decline; maybe the attraction of places like Sapporo, Tokyo, and Osaka; or maybe everybody's just moved to the Kushiro suburbs, but there is nothing and nobody in downtown Kushiro. Hotel Area One was very nice, but 3 nights was still 2 nights too many.

- WN (6/5): 駅前の便利なホテル - 立地は駅前で便利だが、食事となると近隣にはあまり選択肢がない為、できればホテル到着までに済ませておいた方がいい。 ツインルームを利用したが、部屋がやや狭く、ちょっと窮屈。 無料のコーヒー等、飲み物の提供があり、これは有り難かった。 総合的には、少なくとも標準レベルの満足感あり。

- Phawat (8/5): Nice hotel with good location - The hotel is just 5 min walk from JR station and it is also near the restaurants. If you plan to see Japanese crane I think it is better to rent a car, because the bus is quite not often and tourist attractions are far from the city.

- dolphin0011 (8/5): Good Service - Its their service that touched our heart. Being non japanese speaking to start with, i was unable to buy medication (panadol) that night. A very kind hotelier gave us her supplies. Another elderly hotelier helped us to operate the air-conditioner.

- Verified traveler (8/5): conveniently located - It is a few minutes' walk from the JR station and walking distance to the riverside area. The room is quite spacious per Japan's standard and it's in good condition. The free breakfast is quite decent. Overall, it's a good value choice.
- Siew Hui (8/5): Decent stay - The room is decent for the price that we are paying. Its just that its quite a quiet neigbourhood and not that easy to find the hotel. About 10min walk. There is free humidifier to borrow too. The downside is there is no window in the room but an emergency exit door that can be opened. But being 2 girls, we feel insecure to open the door so we felt a bit stuffy in the room. (Well, you may asked why do we want to open the door in winter but we just want a bit of air circulation~)
- Matthew (8/5): GOOD PRICE NEAR THE CITY GOOD PARKING. - THEY HELPED ME OUT HUGE. they had space for 2 more nights when I drove for 15 hours, and I was very happy to stay with them awesome breakfast place, and a great hotel if you need to stay in kushiro. a ltittle small, but hey, good service, good hotel, good location, and they give you Pajamas! it was a great place. I would recommend it if ur on a budget. nice area. close to restaurants. thanks for a great stay!

- Germaninjapan (6/5): Good price in central location - This hotel's rooms come at a very good price, the hotel is very central. Rooms are small (typical for Japanese hotels) and haven't been refurnished for a while. The staff at the reception is very friendly. Unfortunately the matresses are very old. They are hard and you can feel each single spring which at the end makes them as comfortable as a park bench to sleep on.
