It was very pricey for the value. - We liked the location the most, walking distance to Carmel’s center The property is “tired” looking … it’s clean but worn out. The should not advertise “breakfast included” as all they offered is plastic wrapped muffins and bananas. No place to sit and consume this. Grab and no.

You can take a pot of fresh brewed coffee and pastries back to your room in the morning. It is a little old and dated, but very comfortable.
• Elena (1/5): Smell, paper thin walls and overall very old, no charm - The photo of the facade Oh, where do I start. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone. In short - if you arrive in the morning, your room will smell like chemicals and bleach, if you arrive later in the day like we did, the smell of the chemicals will settle and you’ll smell something like an old antique store smells. The walls are paper thin, I’m not exaggerating, we heard full conversations of our neighbors whispering. The building and everything in it is horribly old. Parking is tiny diagonally on a hill, hence very dangerous. Breakfast area is tiny. Only good thing was the front reception staff. We booked two nights, ended up losing money and leaving right away, couldn’t stay there at all. From other reviews it’s obvious that the owners or whoever responds to the reviews, gaslight the reviewers saying that some people “appreciate their Bavarian charm”. Well that’s bs, the charm is literally only on the front photo of the hotel.

• Gil (8/5): I suspect this is one of the more enjoyable properties in town. It reflects life the Carmel way. Relax and enjoy the uni - We would certainly stay here again, but we had conflicting feelings about this property. We loved the old world charm and the way it takes you back to the ways travel used to be. You truly feel like you could be back in the middle of the last century. We loved the convenient location and the staff. The old world charm is also a bit of a problem. Things in our room felt like they had not been maintained very well. For example, there were no easy to access outlets or ports for our phones. With that said, it looked like some nearby rooms were being redone, so the improvements may be gradually rolling through the property.

• Alison (8/5): Slightly quirky but we liked it! - We loved this slightly quirky family run hotel. Our beautifully decorated sea view room was worth the extra money. The continental breakfast was ok - if the hotel is busy you may have to take it to your room but we ate in the reception lounge. Staff are friendly and helpful. We didn't use the pool or sauna but it looked very clean and inviting. An easy walk down into town and under a mile from the beach. Probably not for anyone with mobility issues as there is a lot of steps! We were offered help with luggage.

Price is fair for the location and you can walk everywhere in charming Carmel-by-the-sea. The staff is efficient and professional but could me more friendly.

Parking was free and available at the property (first come first serve basis). The staff was very kind and friendly. Great value for money. Minor thing was the hairdryer being quite old.

• Donna (9/5): Hofsas is a charming little hotel in a beautiful area with an amazing staff and location! - The rooms were very quaint. The furnishings were nice. The view of the ocean and sunset from the 2nd floor deck were truly beautiful. The deck was a common area with a few tables and chairs. It was the perfect place to sit and enjoy the sunset and a glass of wine. When the noise level is low you can hear the ocean waves. :) The breakfast was pastries and tea, coffee, fruit. All delicious for a quick bite before heading out. The staff were truly amazing. There was a gap in our screen and we asked to have it fixed and it was done immediately. Everyone was so kind and friendly. There is no elevator so being on the 2nd floor was a little tough with the luggage. There is also no air conditioning which was only a problem because we were on the last day of a 90 degree heat wave. The staff were wonderful in bringing us a fan to help. Once it cooled off at night and the heat wave broke we were fine and can understand why air conditioning is not needed.

• Linda (4/5): Extremely disappointed at the condition of the property. - Location is excellent and room was clean. This property needs some serious updating. Rooms are extremely outdated, furniture is old and beat up, bathroom from the 1960’s.

I would definitely go back again and ask for the same room so that I can bring my mother with me again - The location and cleanliness, but specifically the view from my room was wonderful. I would definitely stay here again. I was upset at myself because I didn’t ask if they have elevators and my mom is not able to go up a lot of stairs. But they accommodated with giving me a room where she only went up one flight.

• denalidigs (7/5): Dated hotel, some rooms have nice views of the Pacific Ocean - This dated hotel has a great location and a Disneyesque theme that dates back to the 1960's. The view of the Pacific from the room's balconly was lovely. Great staff, one gentleman from the front desk even ran to get me ice. This was much appreciated as my knees did not want to descend to the lower parking lot and then march back up with the ice. Perhaps an ice machine at the lobby level would be a good idea. Room size was rather small, chairs were attractive but you sank so low into them that it was difficult to get out of them. I sat in them only once. There are not enough outlets in the room, even the bedside radio (did I say dated?) and lamps did not offer additonal outlets. Balcony deck paint is peeling, one of the chaise had a broken slat.

• alice (9/5): - This was a very cute and charming boutique hotel with a Bavarian theme. The room was nice and clean. There was a large group so we got upgraded to a king with a private balcony. We got to watch the beautiful sunset every night and wake up to the sound of crashing waves (my favorite). We forgot our jackets in the closet and Carrie was kind enough to overnight it to us. The dry sauna was a bonus! The mattress was a little old but seemed to fit the overall charm.

• Chelsea (6/5): Terrible bed, good location - Staff was friendly and the facility was very clean. The location was a short walk to the main strip of downtown. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed we've ever slept on. It was soft and sunk in the middle, so that we both woke up with sever body aches. Neither of us slept well since the bed was like a trampoline every time one of us moved. Parking was also difficult and there were no spaces off street when we arrived. The TV was very small and only offered limited channels with no ability to connect to streaming services. There was no overhead lighting and the small table lamps were not bright enough on the far side of the room.

• Karen (8/5): Charming, comfortable hotel in a beautiful little town. - Large room, very comfortable bed, fireplace in room, tons of charm, very clean, beautiful views!! Stairs only-no elevator. Streets and sidewalks are difficult to navigate at night because there are little to no lights and the roads and sidewalks are uneven.
