Guest Reviews
- MusiciansMum (8/5): Good value. Family run. - Traditional ,family owned ,no frills and reasonable cost.
I booked late in the year and lucky to find an affordable place to stay as everywhere was full and pricy.
Booked directly with the hotel, room only .
Weather was wet, cold and windy for 5 days out of 11 ,and the beautiful wooden floors chilly ,but would not be problematic in summer.
Helpful owners provided an extra blanket and a room heater as my very large room in the roof ( loft /garret 4th floor ) window small ,but overlooking the sea /English Church, was too chilly.
Firm mattress ,desk/dressing table, and chair big cupboard ,tub chair ,simply furnished .All very clean. Hairdryer. Towels.
Hallways and stairs super clean parquet floor ,well lit.
Small communal balcony on 2nd floor overlooking the church
Location peaceful ,quiet. Concert in church ,cocks crowing in the early hours .
Steep cobbled dead end road .Max 5 mins to cafes, shops, seafront, bus stops and taxis.
Express bus number 9 from airport stops at Plaza Madeira ,5 mins walk
Happy to stay again if on the floor below which has larger windows to let the sun in( but much smaller rooms)
- normand398 (10/5): Old world charm is excellent location - Relaxing old-world charm on a quiet cul-de-sac. Friendly, helpful staff and delicious breakfast. Very clean, comfortable room, with strong WiFi. Superb location within easy walking distance of all of Funchal's attractions and eateries. Rooms done every day. We will definitely stay here again next year.
- 158martyk (2/5): Terrible experience - The location is very good, you can walk to anything in Funchal. Beyond that, I had terrible experience. There is no AC! There is a fan, but the heat was still unbearable on October 30, 2025. Needed to keep windows open so street noise was an issue. Walls are paper thin, you can hear everything. I did not get any sleep at all and I had been hiking all day. The beds are ridiculously hard and I prefer a firm mattress. Parking was tight but doable with a very small rental car. I had to check out after one night of no sleep and they refused a full refund so a very expensive one night stay. The only way to get hold of anyone who works there at any time is to go outside and ring the doorbell! Do not stay here.
- Vacation64135832592 (10/5): Fantastic - Beautiful building, clean room, lovely staff and a nice breakfast. I can't fault this place, we had a fantastic view from our room and very close to centre. Would definitely recommend for a stay in Funchal.
- F9469GGemilyb (10/5): Most Enjoyable Visit, great base to explore from. - We found this hotel to be great for what we needed, good location for exploring from, rooms were basic, but very clean and functional with good facilities.
Basic but fresh produce provided at breakfast, with home grown seasonal fruit available.
The host and her family were extremely friendly, knowledgeable and very accommodating, and help was on hand, even in the middle of the night when we encountered an emergency, not of their making but whilst out in town.
It would be nice to have the option for tea and coffee making facilities in the room, and a small fridge to keep water cold, even at additional cost to hire, as the temperatures were very hot and whilst the fan provided was a blessing, these additional facilities would have made the stay even better.
We will happily return and stay again.
- dkahn2018 (10/5): A lovely quiet place in the middle of Funchal. - Perfect location in a small street, away from the noise of the center but just in the middle of nearly everything in Funchal. Parking with modest fees. Very nice client reception. Nice building, lovely courtyard, big rooms... An excellent choice when looking for a cosy, reasonably-priced place. Enjoy it and say it !
- FranK901 (10/5): Tranquil haven - An absolute gem! Fabulous location in a quiet area of Funchal with a unique family run personal feel. Beautiful historic building, well maintained & immaculately clean with fabulous courtyard garden for breakfast. Thankyou to all who work so hard here to provide this special accommodation. We will be back!
- Discover65163582412 (10/5): Excellent - Positively surprised!
Very good + Well maintained Heritage Bedroom + located in the middle of Funchal City. The beach promenade is very close and everywhere can be reached on foot.
Hotel service friendly & nice. Visit again probably YES.
- Theresa (10/5): - Staff, breakfast & coffee were awesome.
Beds could use a foam topper - hard and a bit uncomfortable. Rooms really could use a ceiling fan since no ac. But really enjoyed the location and English church evening concerts we could hear from our open window @18:00 each night
- Mariusz (8/5): - Przyjazny i pomocny personel.Tylko trochę łóżko jest niewygodne. Jest za twardy materac.Bardzo dobra lokalizacja.Cicha i spokojna okolica
- eppe2023 (4/5): Think twice if you can pay more for sleep do - Bed was chipboard and rock hard, the pictures and description are not accurate, there is no terrace, our bathroom was down the hall, no tea and coffee making facilities etc. it’s a very charming building but even in a short budget the beds were dire and no air con. Think twice. The location is excellent however. Bit the hill to the hotel is cobbled street that are sharp as is the road.
- mariajZ1410WW (10/5): Nice hidden place to stay! - For the price it was good, nice breakfast, nice big rolls,cheese/ham and jam, a yogurt or banana and tea and coffee, very quiet in dining room while everyone's eating,,would be nice to have some music very low in the background Everywhere was very clean. This room had a shower not a bath which was nice. Would be nice to have a picture maybe in the room and some nice colourful pictures about to brighten the place up as it as a bit dark (lovely restaurant called Trigal just round the corner ) It was a nice stay and right near the centre!
- 826maild (10/5): Compete and Utter Gem! - Location, location, location! Down a small side street close to a pedestrian main street full of bars and restaurants. Big supermarket just round the corner for those essentials like bottles of water and possibly wine (mainly wine, to be fair). The hotel is very traditional with hardwood floors to die for that would be tens of thousands of euros to replace. The team running the operation are charming, and so very helpful. Breakfast was relaxed, served to you and always very fresh, and the hotel staff were always quick to offer you more food and coffee during your meal. Walled rear garden was available for breakfast too. We used the garden one afternoon to socialise over a bottle and catch up on our day. Found out at that point they have a gated car park, we didn't need it, you might. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Enjoyed every minute
- Jayne_Warman (10/5): Just Perfect! - This is a quaint, traditional hotel, in a perfect location for exploring Funchal. The rooms are basic but adequate, and extremely clean.
The breakfast was lovely, rolls with ham and cheese, jam, yogurt and as much coffee as we wanted. Although we ate in the dining room, there was also a small outside patio area where we could have eaten if we wanted to.
The owner is extremely accommodating and went out of her way to ensure that we had a fantastic stay. If you are looking for a centrally located budget hotel, then this is ideal.
2 senioren.
- ASecretSquirrel (8/5): Clean hotel centrally located but amenities are basic. Good for a short stay on a budget. - What's good: Very centrally located - minutes walk to the sea front and the La Vie shopping centre which houses a large supermarket and some good value eateries - great for water, breakfast items and fruit.
The hotel itself is in good condition and very clean. It's in a cul-de-sac with no car or foot traffic really either.
Good to know: The hotel is fairly basic in what it offers and the decor is quaint/outdated.
There were only two plug points on my room - one was very inaccessible. Bring an multi adaptor!
My room did not have a fan or AC.
The bathtoom situation was slightly depressing: no shampoo or hairdryer. The units were avocado. The shower situation was a small square pan with a shower curtain and a shower that was hard to calibrate for temperature or hold still in the bracket.
The bed was very firm. Bounce a penny off it, firm.
If I'd known this all in advance I probably still would have stayed for my 3 nights - but been better prepared. I wouldn't have chosen this hotel for a longer stay.
The hosts were very nice but spoke little English.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Kleine, familiäre Unterkunft unweit vom Stadtzentrum. Ruhig gelegen, einfache Ausstattung, sauberes Badezimmer.
- Stuart-Herritty (8/5): Great location for a city break - This is more a B&B than a holiday hotel and ideally placed for walking down into Funchal.
The rooms we had were clean and spacious. There isn't a view as such but we did have a small balcony onto the street. It is on a small side street and there is little noise from traffic. The ensuite was small but clean and functional. Lots of hot water in the shower.
the breakfast for 3€ was a bargain. simple bread roll, slice of cheese and Ham, butter, jam, coffee, banana and a glass of Orange. All cheap components but good value if you are on a budget.
- patrickbH3431SQ (10/5): Charming - Little gem of a place, very close to town centre 2 min walk, Proprietor is a lovely lady. Very clean had lovely wooden interior of parka flooring and wooden ceilings loved the smell of wood. Beautiful view from the balcony of funchal fort. Would definitely stay again.
- AndyMoir (10/5): Good value in an old hotel, central for Funchal - If you expect a 5 star hotel with a pool and sea views and all inclusive then this is not the place for you, but if you want excellent value, a local B&B in real Funchal with a friendly access and walking distance to the promenade and local bars and restuarants then it is ideal. We stayed for 10 days from 24th June. We had a hire car and the secure car park for 2 euros a day is ideal. Breakfast in the courtyard in the sunshine was lovely - ok it may have been the same every day, fresh bread rolls with ham and cheese and jam with lovely coffee and fruit juice, but what do you expect for a few euros per day. The landlady is very friendly even if she doesn't speak much English (although she speaks more English than I do Portugese. We loved walking to the old town every night for meals and drinks, which were all excellent value. We met one couple who were staying in the modern hotel zone which was about 2 miles west and even though they were all inclusive and had paid lots of money they preferred getting a taxi to the old town to eat once they'd disocvered ii after over a week! We alked the levada of the 25 waterfalls, walked at Pico Do Areeio and went on a catamaran trip with Sea Born and saw a sperm whale, and wnet on the glass walkway at Cabo Girao, and cable car to Monte - all awesome - Love Madeira (maybe not for you if you are scared of heights though!)
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It was quite centrally located although the street had potholes, was very steep and had a dead end.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly staff and clean spacious rooms lead to a very nice stay. The breakfast is contenential style, but the coffee is good and there is a lovely patio to enjoy it on.
- raija (6/5): lähellä keskustaa - kodinomainen pieni hotelli. aamiainen :vaalea sämpylä, kinkkua ja juustoa, kahvi tai tee. yksi hedelmä. lähellä keskustaa. huone siisti.
- Sinikka (4/5): Yhden yön majapaikaksi ok, viikko on liikaa. Kitsastelua kaikessa. Voimakkaan huonehajusteen haju häiritsevä. Hotellin pitäjät puhuvat vain portugalia tai espanjaa eivätkä tuntuneet olevan ajan tasalla huonevarauksen muuttuneista päivistä, sählinkiä sisäänkirjautumisessa.
- ZuziaTim (10/5): Recommended - We stayed in Gordon Residential for a week. It was great! We loved everything about it. There was a lovely reception lady who also served us breakfast (tasty & fresh).
The room was very clean and comfortable and it had a small balcony. It was quiet and off the main road but so close to everything; a great strategic location. We only really slept there as we are active during our holidays but it was great to come back to the hotel after an exciting day out. Great value for money!!!
- 775rayt (4/5): Down graded guest was (3) now hotel (1) but still advertises 3 - First the hotel is kept very clean
The hotel is very dark and i mean black at night, worst the lights are on timed push buttons so if you are slow on stairs take a torch. The showers are in bath so if you cant climb into bath then ? There is a bar but it is never open. The breakfast terrace closes after breakfast, so if you come back early there is no place to sit but your room. The main couple who run the place cant speak English, or very little.there is no lift or porter, so you could end up carrying you cases up 3 flights of stairs. There are no amenities in the room, so take your own kettle cups ect, also your own hairdryer. The furniture is old, and we had 2 rooms, and both beds were very noisy if you get my drift. There is no air con , not even a fan. This might read like i hated the place, but once we got used to all this our stay was ok, as i said kept clean and right in centre of everything. Only a few minutes from most things. If you are fit and active this could be your place because the money it cost me i didn't expect the ritz. Funchal and Madeira we really loved. Costs about the same as home, but you can get deals if you look about, but be warned, most beaches are stones, NO SAND unless you travel out of Funchal. As i said we loved the place, very relaxed and the people so friendly. Hope this has been helpful
- William (4/5): Teleurstellend - My chose was on Gordon because it is a traditional residencial. And it was. The room was very hot without any regulation on the temprature. The bed was very old and noisy by any move. And the braekfast was very poor (and every day the same).
- Lynn_Benyon (10/5): Little gem - My sister and I spent a week in this lovely quaint small hotel. Clean beds, bathroom, towels. Breakfast is very fresh crusty cobs with butter jam cheese and jam. Banana. Tea or coffee with hot milk. Orange juice. You can if you wish also add to this by visiting the local spar supermarket. There are no drink facilities in the room so we took a travel kettle. Perfect. No lift. Based on the old town you are in walking distance to all the historical places. Easy walk to excellent bus services on the island. Great cafes and restaurants. Mum and daughter, Dauris and Doris run the place and are very lovely and welcoming.
Yes it's showing it's age, but here you definately get more than you pay for. I would recommend and I would love to go back.
- 65ivanap (4/5): Good location, budget accommodation, steps to marina - It is an outdated, family run guest house, owners do not invest in it.
Smelly bathroom, small waterheater, bad mattress, missing bulbs in the lights to spare some money.....
We had rented a car, so we were coming back just to sleep in the late evening. Breakfast is " continental" ..... diluted coffee with diluted milk, diluted juice, cheapest bread and 1slice of cheese and ham per person, jam and butter. Do it better if you will take your breakfast somewhere else or bring something with and only sit in the backyard ....
There are many restaurants around for lunch and dinner.
Wifi is only at reception, there are only three chairs where you can sit. Parking is in the courtyard for 2 EUR per day, which is positive, because it is almost impossible to park in the neighborhood on the street, mainly if your car is rented... the street are narrow, every second car has dented fenders.
It is characterful old house, it has tremendous potential but necessarily needs renovation!
- 17shan2017 (10/5): Perfect location in Funchal. - Lovely, clean, double room on the top floor of a characterful house. Breakfast was the highlight with delicious coffee with pot of hot milk, fresh rolls, ham, cheese, orange juice, yoghurt and occasionally fresh fruit in the lovely terrace garden with amazing views. Serviced by two lovely, friendly ladies. Excellent location to explore Funchal from. Only a note that it is a short walk up a steep stone street, so wouldn't recommend it for people with difficulties walking. Definitely would like to stay here again.
- Richard (6/5): Residencial Gordon Hotel, Funchal - This was a reasonably priced small hotel close to the centre of Funchal where I stayed for 6 nights in March this year.
- Lee (8/5): Pleasant Hotel - Period architecture, central location, pleasant family run hotel.
- 862gillg (10/5): A week at the Residencial Gordon in February - Friendly, family run and quiet hotel right in the centre with a local bar just at the end of the street. Perfect for a base to explore from and to come back to a hot bath. Doris's breakfasts were simple but adequate and fresh. The rooms were clean, towels provided.
- Don (6/5): Near to centre of Funchal, but basic - When we booked in, the elderly manageress asked for passports in Portuguese and when I asked if she meant 'passport', she asked again in Portuguese, so guessing that was what she meant, I showed her the passports and she took them. When telling me about breakfast time she pointed at a card that said 08:30 - 10:30 and mimed someone eating. I thought that as she has to deal with German and English guests she should at least know the word 'passport' and 'breakfast'. She understands spoken English but seems reluctant to use it.
We found room 103 to be very basic. There were no tea-making facilities etc, which is something we have always found elsewhere. There was a portable television in the room but it was old, wouldn't stay on without us jamming the 'on' button and the remote control was obviously for a video player and didn't operate the TV very well. We had access to one American travel channel. After a busy day it would have been nice to relax with a decent TV.
Although the room looked clean, after I put my bag under the bed it was covered in dust. Towels were provided and changed regularly. The bathroom had a basic shower, and although the water is extremely hot it soon runs out.
We didn't converse much with the other guests as they were all German, although we exchanged 'morgen' etc and had a chat with a couple on the last day.
The management left us alone so we didn't feel pestered or that we were expected to stay out all day
- Christine (10/5): Basic but friendly - Very basic but that is what I was expecting. Easy walk to the town centre but very quiet at night. The breakfast coffee was five star!
