Guest Reviews
- Roger (10/5): - Exactly what you want from a traditional country hotel
- Elaine (10/5): - Ten star fabulously comfortable bed!!! Gorgeous country house and gardens. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return soon.
- Tetyana (10/5): - Fantastic place
- John (10/5): We loved everything about the property, and really enjoyed our 2 night stay. - We loved everything about the property and really enjoyed our 2 night stay. Lovely historic country house and grounds. Beautifully kept, furnished and decorated in keeping with the era of the property. We were made to feel very welcome by the owning family, who made it clear we should feel free to make use of all the family rooms, lounge, library, and games room (with full size snooker table) and also to use the family kitchen if we wished. Great breakfast served in the family dining room. We stayed in suite 2, which is very spacious, with a large en suite bathroom, both with views out over the garden. As the weather was great during our stay we were able to enjoy spending time sitting out in the garden reading and playing with the two very friendly resident Spaniels, Barney and Spencer. A very peaceful and relaxing place to stay. We would definitely return if visiting or passing through this area in future.
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (9/5): Would stay again. - Very welcoming host, lovely comfortable room and fantastic gardens. Great breakfast. Friendly dogs, too! Nothing.
- Sheila (9/5): Lovely location. Friendly host, good food and great value - Excellent local produce TV reception poor
- Richard (10/5): Timeless charm - This place is amazing! Although the signage to the entrance is not easy to see, you can argue that it is discreet and in keeping with the property; the location on Google and Hotels.com was accurate too. What a beautiful house, fabulous service, spacious and well equipped rooms and marvellous breakfast. And wonderful spaniels. Definitely bringing my wife with me next time!
- Michael (10/5): Wonderful - Spectacular period property set in lovely grounds / land
Met by James who was super friendly and efficient.
Beautiful room…..so quiet and comfortable, met the 2 dogs who were great fun and do well behaved.
Topped off with a scrumptious breakfast
- Julie (10/5): A beautiful property in a gorgeous location. We will certainly rebook & return. - Beautiful location for this gorgeous residence. Easy to locate and a warm welcome on arrival. Our bedroom & bathroom were stunning. We will certainly return and recommend it to those who like beauty in their surroundings. Zero
- Anita (10/5): - Beautiful property, lovely gardens.
Breakfast was amazing - great mushrooms!
Bed was huge and comfortable.
Staff were fab - very helpful.
Only downside is no door between the bathroom and bedroom - so very little privacy.
- Pauline (10/5): An absolute gem of place in a beautiful part of the world. - Beautiful setting, room and the hosts were welcoming.
- David (10/5): First rate, needs fully met without any fuss, and always with the guest being prioritised. - Friendly atmosphere, good food, beautiful location. Spacious room, clean, and overall a home from home feeling. Not applicable.
- Joanne (10/5): A Hidden Gem - We loved everything.... our room was large and furnished in keeping with the house, the bathroom was large and modern, and a nice view from the bedroom window. The host was lovely, a very likeable lady who was very welcoming. We loved the 2 friendly dogs that greeted us enthusiastically and were always ready to play. The house and grounds were beautiful, and we'll definitely stay here again. A big thank you for having us, and we really hope we managed to tire the dogs out for you on our walk around the grounds with them before we left 😊🤣 Everything was perfect.
- Antony (10/5): Lovely property for a one night stay - Beautiful location. Quiet. Spectacular
- Mark (10/5): Super - Very comfortable accommodation in a lovely old house The tiny sign on the main road made it a little difficult to find.
- Ray (9/5): Superb - Everything about the manor was brilliant especially our hosts it felt like we we're invited guests and to have freedom to walk round the gardens what a lovely place
- Catriona (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Very Friendly Host James and his Mum made us most welcome not forgetting their Two rescue dogs very Friendly and Playful a extra treat walking through the extensive grounds Unfortunately the main road was being resurfaced and the Diversion was too long even though we were 50 yards from the Accomodation
- Sarah (9/5): Superb -
- Peter (9/5): Superb -
- Edna (9/5): Overnight / Distance just right for a visit to relatives in Consett and to Durham Miner's Gala. - Room very spacious and dual aspect on garden. Breakfast lovely. Ideal Venue. Highways closed the road for tarmacking so at 10pm a long detour to find the entrance but this was not the fault of the venue.
- Andrew (10/5): Lovely house - Beautiful house and location. Very friendly hosts.
- Anonymous (10/5): Weather was lovely owners dogs were so friendly nothing was to much trouble - Location was amazing breakfast was lovely was offered smoked salmon there was everything from fresh fruit yogurt loads of different cereals partner had full English and said sausages were amazing

- William (8/5): A privilege to stay in a lovely, old, family house. - Lovely old house, with good furniture and interesting paintings. Books to read in the spare room. Fresh milk for early morning tea. Fun spaniels, charming hostess and son. Good recommendation for restaurant. Booking system meant we had very little idea of who we were staying with and what to expect. This meant we there was a feeling of anominity.
- Tina (9/5): We would definitely go back - Stunning property, so beautiful. Owners were lovely and couldn't have done more for us. The quality of the room was amazing, such a comfortable bed. It was so peaceful too. The bathroom fittings were of the highest standard. Gorgeous breakfast too. It represented extremely good value for money. The only, allbeit slight, downside was the slightly odd layout and access to the bathroom. This was a bit disconcerting but wouldn't stop me going back, or recommending the place.
- Patty (8/5): Very good - This is a beautiful Georgian house which is furnished beautifully with lots of antiques but with modern bathrooms and lovely grounds .

- Pamela (10/5): Stunning property in a beautiful location - Stunning period property with an individual personality. Full of period features and a refreshing change from the chain hotels. The bed was super comfortable and the breakfast was delicious - I would love to return! Signage from the main road could be bigger/better - it's not easy to spot so you really need to look out for it.
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Michelle (10/5): Beautiful stay in historic country home. - It was a pleasure to stay at Burnhopeside Hall, a historic family home, where the owner Christine, welcomes you to enjoy while you stay. The large bedroom , comfortable large bed and bathroom (including deep bath) were first class, as was the full English breakfast, fruit and cereals and access to sitting rooms and the gardens around the home. We enjoyed walking to the river with resident dogs Spencer and Barney and made the most of the park and ride to visit Durham. N/A

Booked as it was only 20mins from Beamish, and stayed in the lovely top floor self catering apartment. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer stay - the apartment is so light and airy, and fit our needs perfectly. We loved the use of the snooker room too which we had to ourselves. The history of the hall is also very interesting. We will return!

- Dr (10/5): Comfortable accommodation annd excellent breakfasts in a stunning English Country House. - Excellent breakfast - consistently so over the years we have stayed here. Nothing
- Chris (10/5): Such a beautiful and relaxing place. - Our bedroom was huge and looked out over trees. Totally relaxing especially for a nearly blind disabled person.
Our dog loved the easy angled stairs and the other dogs.
Everything was wonderful. Christine the host was most pleasant and considerate.
Forgot to mention the grounds, walled garden and river walks withe the dogs. And the sausages made from her own pigs. Nothing it was perfect. Be careful when first looking for the place as it is easily missed on a busy fast road.
- Mark (10/5): The genuine article - Our second stay, this time with Americans, and they were as enchanted as we are. The lovely proportions of the house, the country manor ambience, the enthusiastic dogs you can take for a walk to see the happy piggies who contribute to your breakfast. Tea on arrival, fresh milk in thermos in the rooms as well, very informative farming journals (I want that tractor!), good books. The breakfast table is shared, so you can talk to other real humans for interesting conversations. Absolutely nothing. We ate in Lanchester at Ravellos(?) Italian restaurant, good and parking no problem. Church is ancient. Easy car ride to Durham and Bishop Auckland which we visited next. On second day we ate at Six in Gateshead on top floor of the Baltic, really special 9 course taster menu, but not pretentious. The kind night manager let us out personally. That's the grim North for you.
- Michael (10/5): The best kept secret in County Durham - The most comfortable nights sleep I’ve ever had. Such a hidden gem! Thanks Christine.
- Alan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hilary (9/5): Superb -
- Gijsbert (10/5): Wonderful place - Fresh, tasty, wholesome. It’s the best
- George (10/5): - Our stay at Burnhopeside Hall was one of our most memorable ever. Christine, our hostess, was delightful and helpful. The room was spacious and the surroundings could not have been more grand. This is a stately old home, full of beautiful furniture and dishes, near sheep pastures and the river. While there, we walked the yard and fields behind the house, went down to the river, accompanied by Barney and Spencer (the Burnhopeside dogs!). Breakfast was delicious and elegantly presented. This was a memorable stay!!
- Joe (10/5): Perfection! - This may be the best place we've stayed, or at least it's in my top three UK stays ever, particularly if you are travelling with the family dog . A fabulous place with a wonderful host, Christine, for whom, nothing is too much trouble. The room and breakfast are outstanding. Christine is an amazing cook! Nothing at all.
- Stuart (9/5): Superb -
- Tessa (10/5): Exceptional as always -

Excellent breakfast, good choice, great service. Lovely hosts. Nothing at all.
- Jillian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Theresa (9/5): Enjoyed! Would stay again. - Not a chain! Wonderful small dining rooms Initial access in the dark; easy to miss entrance to drive way. White paint on kerb stones might help delineate entrance
- Carol (10/5): Absolutely delightful experience. ! - Goodness, what an incredibly delightful.experience at Burnhopeside Hall. Absolutely nothing we could fault.
Thank you ,Christine for letting us into your wonderful home. Pure luxury and everything of the most high quality.. A huge bedroom really more a suite, and so beautifully furnished. A country house full of wonders and a billiard room too! .
Nothing was any trouble and the wonderful cooked breakfast was made to order plus ahuge choice of fruits, cereals ,yogurt was fantastic served in beautiful Regency dining rooms.
Cannot praise Christine , her son James and Burnhopeside Hall enough, wonderful. Nothing to dislike

- Nigel (10/5): Hidden gem - Home from home. Fantastic hostess. Rooms were sublime. Breakfast excellent. Will stay again. It rained a bit 🤣
- Jonathan (10/5): What a special place - Beautiful rooms Nothing
- Javad (10/5): Great stay - need to return to finish reading my book...... - Seculded peaceful location, homely atmosphere with warm welcome. Lovely breakfast. Our room and various lounges were well stocked with interesting books - found myself picking one up and reading a narrative, which I haven't done for a long time. Wifi in my room was not stable enough for Teams call, but O2 service on my own mobile worked fine, so no issue. The entrance is quite hard to spot on the main road, so need to slow done when navigation says it's near.

Breakfast was excellent.
- Louise (6/5): Place of 2 halves. Lovely upstairs. Disappointing Kitchen. - En-suites large and modern. Beautiful surroundings. First impression of boot room and kitchen grubby and tired. Farmhouse was cold.
- Bernard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anthony (10/5): Would definitely recommend - Relaxing and peaceful WiFi was weak poor signal
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Anne (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely location, building, and staff. Dogs are very welcome. Close to Dunham and still had a rural feel.
- Cally (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful host and a beautiful home in such a peaceful setting. She was also so welcoming to our dog, who loved it there.
We liked it so much we rebooked for our journey back south! N/A
- Maria (10/5): Lovely but could do with a bar or vending machine - Breakfast very good Did not like game sausage
- Aimi (10/5): Wonderful friendly, homely, country retreat. - A wonderful stay with Christine making you feel right at home. It’s not a bnb as such, more a historic country home where you have the pleasure of staying at.
A comfortable big bed and cosy room.
Loved walking the two friendly spaniels (Spencer and Barney) to go and say hello to the piggies before breakfast! Nothing - but do note our room had an open plan bathroom / bedroom (although WC was round a corner). This was not a problem for us, but possibly not the most privacy for an early romantic getaway! (I can’t speak for the layout of the other rooms).
- Jackie (10/5): Absolute gem of a place. Warm welcoming host and relaxing and safe homely feel to the place. - Extremely welcoming host Christine. Felt like we were staying in someone’s home rather than a ‘hotel’/BB. The house has a cosy warm feel to it. Set in beautiful grounds. Beds are huge and linen and duvet top quality. Breakfast is cooked to order and plenty of choice cereal/fruit etc. Use of billiards table on offer. Plenty of parking. Great recommendation of local Italian food which was top notch. Absolute nothing to suggest an improvement on x
- Quiggers67 (9/5): Fabulous Durham Period Building Stay - This is like a Stately Home set in its own grounds/wooded area. A beautiful building where you could easily film a period drama. The staff were great, very polite and helpful. The rooms were very comfortable with everything we needed. Breakfast was superb and made exactly how we liked it. Great place to take our dog with lots of walks. Free and easy parking for the car. Very quiet at night so sleep was excellent. Superb location for travelling around Durham.
- Colin (9/5): Will definitely be visiting again. - Beautiful house and extensive grounds. Our dog loved meeting Christine’s and being shown around by them on our walks. Very quiet and peaceful stay, lovely setting for breakfast. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
- Darren (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pearlyn (10/5): Beautiful and comfortable home stay! - Christine and James were very hospitable. Charming and cosy house with lots of nature and wide open space to roam. My kids were in love with their 2 friendly pet dogs. The beds were comfortable! Breakfast was delightful.
