Guest Reviews
- Richard (10/5): Good spot -
- Ann (10/5): Perfect location, as my daughter was camping very nearby - N/A
- kim (10/5): - Great pub in a brilliant position .our room was very comfortable and quiet .we used Brutus street carpark on just park and it was an ideal location for the pub . Nothing
- Belinda (9/5): Quiet and comfy rooms in a popular pub in a popular location. Excellent position to explore Totnes - Warm and welcoming and such a great location for all the town. Peaceful despite being in the high street and very comfy rooms. Easy check in and access to rooms safe and secure but without having to go through the bar which was ideal. All great indeeed
- Graham (10/5): - Stayed for 4 nights. Very good value for money. Excellent location in centre of Totnes - both railway and bus connections 5min walk.. 50% discount on food in hotel lounge bar and 47CafeBar across the road (breakfast). Both room and lounge bar have a 'nice feel'. Rooms are above lounge bar, so slight background noise later in evening. However bar closes at 11pm every night, so quiet thereafter.
- Jeff (7/5): This is an excellent value for money room. Rate was room only, but vouchers for money off were given for food, both at t - Very convenient town centre pub with rooms above. No car parking, but a short walk away was Old Brutus car park Nothing I didn’t like

- Claire (8/5): Great location in the heart of Totnes. - A family run pub in an central and excellent location in Totnes town. The bonus of 50% off food at the pub and the cafe across the road was a very welcome surprise. Both dinner at the pub and breakfast at the cafe was excellent, the staff were friendly and hard working. The bed could of been a little softer but that would be my only negative.
- Jennifer.G (8/5): Great location being right in the centre of Totnes town - The check in was via the bar which was easy and straight forward. Rooms are bright with natural light, clean and spacious. Cleaning lady was helpful. Location right in centre of town. No actual parking but carpark only 100m away and seemed reasonable for 24hours. We didn't have breakfast included but the pub owns the cafe over the road and we received a discount for eating there - very nice food with good options. Just for others to be aware - there is no lift and a few stairs up to the rooms and if staying in rooms 4 and 5 then a couple of fire doors to also get through with luggage. Sound from the pub below could be annoying during the weekends but for me it was quiet by 10pm.

- Andrew (7/5): We would stay again but only one night. - We didnt eat there but drinks were great and staff helpful. It was good enough for one night 🌙. Thank you for the stay. Mattress was uncomfortable and pillows offered no support. Bathroom was dated and shower cubicle small.
- Bryan (4/5): Disappointed - Room very clean and comfortable The noise- music till late one night and quiz the second night. Beer barrels arrived at 6.30am
- Nicola (8/5): -
- BARBARA (7/5): Great location except for parking. Great pub . - Friendly and helpful staff. Good food and had half price January offer. Bathroom was very tight and the bed not too comfortable . Very small room. . No parking so had to check on ticket several times at public car park.

- Laura (8/5): - Pub at the centre of Totnes and good value for money. As the rooms are just above the pub, it can be noisy in the evening but TBF, it wasn't that bad
- Stone (5/5): Nice location but noisy in the night - Nice location, comfy bed Room too hot, can hear the drone of a fridge or a boiler, water pressure in shower was awful

- Jo (10/5): - Everything and the staff were friendly polite happy Wish I stay longer
- Angela (7/5): Nice, what I expected. - The food was really good. Comfy bedroom. Central location. Staff nice. It was noisy - a rock group played on Saturday night! However, I sort of expected that in a pub. It was good value, anyway, and I stuck earplugs in :)
The shower was slightly broken - I reported that.
- Dorothy (8/5): Very convenient, clean & comfortable - Right in the centre of Town
- Rita (10/5): So good I booked it twice x - I was enjoying my stay so much, I booked an extra 2 nights. All staff absolutely charming, helpful and friendly. As a solo traveler this is so important, to make me feel at ease, comfortable and safe. Location is brilliant between High Street & Fore Street, Totnes. Private entrance is great, no need to walk through the pub. However, pub is absolutely lovely, space to drink, sit and people watch our on to main thoroughfare in Totnes. Wifi great. Food delicious and great value. Coffee hot and creamy. Prices for room, food & drinks all very reasonable. I will recommend King William.IV to friends and be back myself 10/10 Thank you all xxx Can't think if anything... it has a traditional pub feeling but not out-dated.
- Helen (8/5): -
- Mark (7/5): - Great location, pub food was fine. Room didn’t feel very clean and mattress in room 2 no good.
- David (10/5): - Large room very comfy bed
- David (10/5): - Large room very comfy bed
- Amy (9/5): Fantastic visit, we will stay here again! - Great place to stay in the perfect location. Close to Totnes train Station and the main Totnes shop/food/pub area.
The room was perfect, very comfy bed and space.
We had food in the pub below and it was reallyyyy good, nice pub to have a drink in as well.
Totnes as a place is stunning, in all weather's it looks so pretty. Just like a place out of a Harry Potter movie. There are lots of independent shops, cafés, a few pubs, a market which was there on the Saturday (we stayed on a Froday night) and it is in walking distance from the train station. There is a main car park nearby that you can pay for.
Everyone was so friendly in the area, it creates a lovely place to visit. There are a few small negatives unfortunately but it won't effect me staying there again.
1.) The pub downstairs shut at 11pm on a Friday, and the bar staff didn't call last orders/music was still on/no communication with customers, so we were unaware that it had closed. Other customers had come in after 11pm as well and weren't told that they weren't serving, all of us only realised when we went to the bar at 11:10pm to order. A bit of communication for customers who aren't local would be helpful, as the pub looked and acted like it was open.
2.) It's is noisy in the morning due to lorries delivering to the pub and local shops, the noise started from 6:30am until 9am (Saturday morning.) We understood why there was noise as the shops and pub need supplies, but it is something to consider if you want a lie in haha! Luckily we were happy to wake up and crack on with the day.
3.) Take supplies as shops/most pubs/food places shut early, and the area close to the pub doesn't have any sort of co op/late night corner shop. This is also a positive as it is great to see independent shops, it looks like a place straight out of Diagon Alley. We just weren't prepared and if we had thought we would have picked up a few beers/fizzy drinks/snacks for the room for after 11pm.
- David (10/5): - Amazing location Great food friendly staff
- sheila (9/5): A very good stopover en route to Penzance. - Unfortunately I had to leave before 10am on each of my visits so could not stay for breakfast.
- David (10/5): Great boozer - Great location clean and tidy
- David (10/5): -
- Emma (8/5): -
- ian (9/5): -
- Amy (9/5): Lovely pub and accommodation can’t beat the location - Friendly staff, we enjoyed the evening entertainment!
- Stuart (8/5): All round good fun and great vfm. - All good, as it says on the tin, excellent staff, lovely room and location spot on. Nothing
- Linda (8/5): Comfortable and fun place to stay - Spacious room with great view of the High Street. Convivial atmosphere. Lack of heating
- David (10/5): -
- John (4/5): -
- Dawn (8/5): -
- Angela (9/5): Very pleasant and comfortable stay and affordable ~ would book again - Very central ~ nice large room with comfortable bed. Handy to have good, affordable food downstairs.
Helpful to store bags for a few hours once checked out. Had some trouble with tv remote ~ even after we reported it and the battery was quickly replaced.
- patricia (6/5): It was adequate for what we needed but not what was expected. - The bed was comfortable but it was a small double.
The towels were nice and changed every day.
Mugs are a nice size and enough tea/coffee supplies left. The room was described as Deluxe but it wasnt,
it was very small and cramped. There was no wardrobe, just a rail for clothes. The shower was a small electric shower with not much power. Decoration and furniture was very tired.
- Kathrin (8/5): -
- Ruth (4/5): 5 nights was too long in this hotel - Location
The room was clean Lights outside on all night making it look like morning all night
Double bed not comfortable
Shower was difficult and hard to drain
Noise from the bar, although it was not too late
- Yolland (10/5): - Everything was good Going home
- Mariajharvey (7/5): Great location - Perfect location, friendly staff.
Room was comfortable, room was clean enough. Sash windows in room were very dirty, I asked if they could be cleaned but they weren't whilst we were there.
- Gill (8/5): -
- catriona (10/5): -
- Richard (9/5): Ideal for short visit to Totnes - Enteral to the town No outside space
- Jack (7/5): Friendly pub - Great, spacious room in a friendly pub. Perfect location in central Totnes.
- Dave (4/5): Avoid room 1 - Just had 2 nights in room 1 .. Never again . Who in there right mind puts 4 floodlights directly outside the bedroom windows and leave them on until midnight . The curtains are a waste of time , it needs blackout blinds at least . The room is also roasting hot due to the ( lovely ) large windows.. however , due to the horrendous noise from the high street the windows were needed to be kept shut . Absolutely awful room to stay in . Definitely not worth tbe money . I think we probably managed 4-5 hours sleep over the 2 nights .
The pub its self is ok , good food and beers . But the weekend was ruined by the room
- Sonia (6/5): Comfy central stay. - Very comfy room, central location in Totnes., Room faces the street so was noisy till quite late.
- Stephanie (9/5): Very enjoyable - The staff were very friendly. The location was great. The food was great. Nothing
- robk (7/5): - It was clean and spacious. Excellent location. Friendly staff. Food was decent.
- Susan (7/5): Good value - Great location on the high street, room was clean and staff were friendly.
- Katrina (9/5): -
- Susan (7/5): - The bed and towels were very comfortable. The location is fantastic - right in the heart of the town centre. The staff were friendly. The room was clean and the shower was good. Good value for money too. I stayed during the heat wave and I was surprised to find that there was no portable fan in the room (other rooms I've stayed in the summer months have had one). So it made the stay less pleasant because of the heat. Luckily the windows were opened and that helped to reduce the temperature a little. The bathroom sink was very slow to empty the water - it didn't seem to be draining properly.
- Jill (8/5): - V central, quirky room! Very noisy as right on the street and had to have the windows open for temperature
- Kevin (7/5): Great short break, will go again. - Although we did not book any meals before, once there we found the menu and food, far exceeded our expectations. The quantity of food and the quality was fantastic. Once sampled we did not eat anywhere else in Totnes. Maybe a little noisy from the street, however it was summer and we needed to have windows ajar.
- paul (10/5): -
- lorraine (1/5): Very disappointed on the standard of the room, needs refurbishment - Location Decor very tired and needed a deep clean. Dirty bathroom blinds and radiator in the bathroom. Cobwebs hanging from the bedroom ceiling.
- Mackenzie (5/5): Lovely staff and a great location… - What a great location and a lovely Arts & Crafts period building. The potential of this property is sorely wasted. Sadly the rooms are fairly basic. The building is incredibly central, beautiful and with only 5 rooms could be the most delightful hotel in town. Some investment and attention to detail would make this an unstoppable business.
- Summerson (7/5): Pleasant break. - Food was excellent. I had roast beef. There was only snack breakfast. Couldn't get the tele to work.
- Tracy (8/5): -
- Brian (9/5): -
- Derek (9/5): -
- Stuart (8/5): -
- David (8/5): - Great location
- Jessica (5/5): Check in advance that the pub doesn’t have live music playing if you want a decent night’s sleep! - The location is very convenient and the staff are welcoming and friendly.
The pub downstairs has a jolly atmosphere. And the food was pretty decent and reasonably priced We had not been told when we made our booking that the night we were staying there would be a band playing in the pub. We were to en assured it would finish by 10.30 but the music continued until 11 and then people were outside making lots of noise until around midnight. We had to be up early for a long hike the next day so this was quite annoying, although everyone sounded like they were having a lovely time!
And the fuse went while my partner was having a shower which left him having to take there covered in soap while it was fixed.
- Victoria (7/5): -
- Terry (5/5): A great location, basic rooms but a good price. Did not eat so cannot judge food. - Bit basic. Bathroom outdated with a dribble of a shower but lots of hot water. Whistling basin tap (hilarious!)
Tricky removing key from lock to firedoor
Would have been useful to have been able to have a second key - we are friends not partners and have different timeframes for getting up and about exploring in the morning
Arranged to leave bags in the room, with the key, after checkout with a member of staff in the evening, only to be called next morning saying we had not checked out and left our bags in the room - information hadn't been passed on Second bedroom lamp would have been useful
- melanie (9/5): Great staff, great food, average room but clean and tidy. Dog friendly which can sometimes be difficult to find - Great staff even when I messed up the booking thinking I had booked an extra night!
Food is excellent, room nothing fancy but we could take our dog Shower could do with re grouting but that is just so it would look nicer, clean and functional as it is.
Noisy at night but this is to be expected if you book a room over a pub. My husband could do the pub quiz from our room!
- Voysey (10/5): -
- linda (9/5): What I expected in terms of accommodation - Breakfast was not included
Separate stairs to the rooms
