Guest Reviews
- JUN (6/5): - Nice location and the property looks clean. No rack or soap stand in shower room; hot water run out at the beginning of shower on the 2nd day, very unsetting; the land lady said the fuse jumped but all the plugs work fine at the time.
- Scott (6/5): - Door didn't shut properly. No (working) safety chain on door.
Mattresses and pullow
- Marie (10/5): - Lady was very helpful
- Charlene (6/5): - Didnt have an air conditioner . But put fan in room. It worked ok. We stayed 3 nights the 2 garbage cans were over flowing in our room .
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The room was fine. It was a one night stay for us as we were just passing through. It was pretty much a no frills motel. Nothing great but nothing bad either.
- Kelly (8/5): - Very basic accommodations. Firm mattresses.
A little noisy from highway/road noise.
No AC, so could be unpleasant on very warm night.
A couple moths in room (no idea where they came from).
But good enough for the price.
- Harold (10/5): - Nothing else that really stands out. I got just what I expected
- alvaro (4/5): - The beds were old. The pillows were flat, the room smelt and looked like it was a smoking room at one time very outdated.and smelled old and musty
- Rhiannon (4/5): - Hahahaha we made a video of how crazy and ghetto
- ali (10/5): - Very clean and tidy.
- Olive (4/5): - The staff were friendly and helpful throughout my visit.Check in and check-out were smooth and efficient. I had a disappointing experience during my stay. The room had a strong, unpleasant smell, and the carpet flooring seemed to be the source of it. The beddings were also in poor condition — they looked old, felt dirty, and had a noticeable odor.
Cleanliness and comfort are the basics I expect from any hotel, and unfortunately, this place did not meet that standard. I would not recommend staying here unless improvements are made.
- CyndyAnn (8/5): - The beds were hard but okay. The bathroom was beautiful. It was very good for the price. Location was excellent .
- Darryl (8/5): - Cheap Price. Beds were comfortable. Basically all I was looking for. A shower and sleep
- Robert (4/5): - It was good for one night but not longer.
- Mike (6/5): Good for guys , wife will raise eyebrows - Very affordable motel, it was the best price and very limited rooms available in Powell River when I booked. I got exactly what I expected that I paid for. One bed was fantastic, my son‘s bed was a little harder. The ratings was more for the black Areas around the tub that were covering the bottom two tiles of grout. Other than that, I had no complaints. I was in room four.
- BRENT (8/5): - Short stay for a summer wedding. Close to the two ferry terminal’s and 5 minute drive for shopping
- Randy (8/5): Overnight Stay - Overnight stay Would be nice if they had coffee in the rooms. Very clean rooms Would stay again
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Does in a pinch. Lots of rules.
- Peggy (2/5): - loud, run down, no coffee
- Donna (6/5): Get what you pay for. - Room was old and had seen better days. Full daylight around the door, concrete sidewalk broken. Spider webs and spiders inside suite, bed was hard and had a 50 yr old bedspread. Some permanent residents live there. No dishtowels and very small towel for showering. We had a kitchenette but the cabins looked cute. Don’t think I would stay again
- Henry (8/5): - Basic clean old fashioned motel
- Caroline (6/5): - Really nice staff and convenient to drive to town but not the cleanest. It does the job for one night.
- Karen (2/5): - Dirty, sheets and blankets stained and dirty
- Michel (8/5): Good little hotel - Good little hotel, no frills, big rooms .
- Charlene (6/5): - Quiet setting
- Beverley (8/5): - We had a restful stay.
- Albert (4/5): - Not recommend, old needs renewal. Sinks needed repair. Working man cliental, low rates ,but few assets
- Jordan (4/5): - The bed smelled like urine and was extremely uncomfortable. It's not worth staying here.
- shelly (8/5): - We booked a cottage. Although it was marketed as having kitchen facilities, the amenties were lacking, there was not even a coffee maker or can opener and all the cooking pots and dishes provided were in poor condition. Certainly this motel could benefit from some updates, but the manager was friendly, accessible and the cottage was very clean.
- Randall (6/5): - Stairs felt unsafe
- Dean A (10/5): - Large, clean room.
- Carole (6/5): - Comfortable
- Bryce (8/5): - Was clean and good
- Joe (4/5): - checkin was a bit of a hassle as no one was there. phoned and no one answered. i was there early, however, and I knew that but I was hoping for early check-in or at least to drop some stuff off before visiting a friend further into town.
no ice machine, one light was out, jeez maybe i should have given it a 2.
- patricia (6/5): - No a/c so I appreciated the fan.. bed wasn’t very comfy..the fridge froze my milk(may be an operator problem) and I couldn’t figure out how to work the tv(again may be an operator problem)
- Gary (10/5): - I liked everything about the property-room, bed, bathroom, grounds and friendly owner.
I don't like Google telling people that this fine establishment is "permanently closed". Marland Motel is very much open for business.
- Kenneth (6/5): - stunk like cigarette smoke and had very old dirty looking furniture
- Gregory (8/5): - Okay, lots of poor reviews, so perhaps I'm being a little too generous, but this place wasn't terrible. Certainly dated, but I think that's what to expect at that price point. My room was clean, heater worked, television, WiFi, bathroom was full of necessaties. Lady at front office was very pleasant. Its a motel, not a resort.
- Elizabeth (6/5): - The experience was ok - service, state of the room, were ok, nothing spectacular or special.
- Gene (6/5): - Very old and very uninviting No one in the office to check us in Had to knock on someone else’s door to find out where the owner was and she phoned her to tell her we were there Some water issue in the bathroom Floor was wet Bedspreads appeared old and needed a good cleaning as did the rug Would not stay here again and would not recommend any one else to
- 835gerritr (2/5): Do not stay there - Oh my , this place is a dump , needed a place to stay for the night all other places were full , checked in for 10mins had to leave , room smelled like smoke , cigarette burns on the bed covers , stains all over the place , argued with owner got refunded told her I rather sleep in my truck than in any of the rooms
If trip advisor had negative stars this place is a -5 rating
- Jenny (2/5): - I am sorry that my phone is not working while I'm in Canada, and the office at the Marland is not open. There is a faded note with phone number to call upon arrival. The office has posted signs regarding the COVID pandemic to wear mask and to call rather than an open office. I felt a bit desperate because my phone doesnt work, so I tried knocking and I walked around the office to see if I could find anyone home. It looks unlived in and unkempt. No one was there. THere is a resident in one or two of the rooms. I innerrupted one of them and they were generous, and said they would call the office people for me and "they will be right up". As I waited for a short time, 10 or 15 minutes, I began to feel uncomfortable about the combination of a dirty office with messages that apear old, no one on site office not attended as the expedia site advertisment says, residents living there but apears to be no guests, I felt a vibe that said I would not feel comfortable sleeping and staying there. And so I left, knowing I can not get refund. I felt better as soon as I drove away. I went to tourist visitor site in Powell River and was directed to a safe, clean and quiet place for same price I paid for Marland.
- Brian (6/5): - Needed to be cleaned and updated. Lot of little things needed attention. I was a maintenance supervisor for a large hotel in Victoria and know what is exceptable and what is not.
- James (10/5): - Good value for the price. No problems. Clean.
- Rob (4/5): - You get what you park for. Reasonable space for the price but still felt a bit over priced.
- elahosun (2/5): Not for tourists - Stayed two hours and had to leave. A run down motel. Cracked bathroom sink, still had someone's dental floss stick on the shelf in bathroom, yuck! shower dated with loose caulking. Did not feel safe, definitely not comfortable. Stains on furniture cushions. This is not a tourist motel.
Awful! Stay away ! Scary longterm clientele.
- Vacationer602476 (2/5): Gross! Don’t stay here - How bad could it be for one night (we thought)….HORRIBLE! We should’ve read the other reviews on Trip Advisor and saved ourselves the headache. Upon arrival we were “greeted” by a confrontational front desk manager- she kept demanding more money for our child, which we had no issues paying for. We should’ve checked the room before checking it…dirty, smelly and contains something (mold? Cat hair?) that triggered a major allergy attack for my husband! We called hotels.com to see if we could re-book somewhere else but when they spoke with the manager she refused a refund.
We honestly thought we could tough it out in a less than stellar motel for just one night but really regretting that decision! Read the other reviews about the crazy manager/ it’s no joke, and the place is an absolute dive. Don’t waste your money. Go elsewhere!
- Leah (2/5): - Rooms we very dated. Like 1979 stained flower couchs. Most bed matresses are min 20 years old, my friends room had origal bed spreads from the 70s,all furnature was stained old sagging and dirty, even the $2 rubber bath mat was atlest 15 years old stained yellow cracked with age and full of black mould..the sponge provided to clean ur dishes was horrrific, old musty and again doller store cheap crap. I paid extra for the family suite. 179.00 then she chargrd me $10 each extra person there was 4 of us and and $12 per night per dog x3 totaling close to 300 per night. This was absoluty not worth it. Not even close to that amount. Sadly we booked 2 weeks in advance and all other hotels we sold out leaving us trapped to stay here. Please.read the reviews and choose wisely. Wish i could attach photos.
- Mark (6/5): - Decent enough place. The lady who runs thr joint was super nice. But it needs some love. Also needs AC. Holy bajeebus. Either sweat your butt off with the windows closed, or keep em open and smell the weed the downstairs customers are smoking.
- Guy (10/5): - Manager Jenny was great and friendly
- Robert (6/5): - Marginal accommodation.
- Michelle (6/5): - The kitchen was nice to have although not equipped very well. Upon checkin I informed them that we would not be staying all 3 nights. I understood we could not cancel the 3 night but was not expecting to be charged the pet fee for the night we were not there. The staff were friendly but often not available
- Malissa (6/5): - Was happy to find a place last minute to rest our heads
- Susan (4/5): - Jenny is lovely but the place is dirty, the fan is noisy, no paper towels or Kleenex but there are 2 bath towels. We just need a place to sleep and keep our food cold. This place fits the bill but we are only here for 12 hours. Expensive for what you get.
- Sheri (10/5): - Clean, friendly, no frills motel. Glad places like this exist. Just needed a place to sleep comfortably without breaking the bank. Very satisfied.
- David (6/5): - For only a small amount more you can have much higher quality finish and amenities in this area. Had a nice big property which was good for our dogs.
- Laura (4/5): - Booked 2 months in advance, 2 queen bed room at $75 per night. When we arrived we received a room with a double and a twin at $125 per night.
Very disappointing to spend an extra $100 for the 2 nights we stayed.
If I had know the price was going to be more we would have stayed somewhere else.
We’ve stayed at this motel 3 years ago and it’s gotten quite rundown, at least the room we had was.
- Miguel (2/5): - The place is old and run out; the bathroom door have a huge hole. I have to use my tools to fix the table that was failing apart. The main door to the street has only one of the privacy locks and none of the pictures on EXPEDIA reflect the real property. I decide to leave the first day and I call the manager at 8 AM (Check out is at 11 am) I was told That i have to pay for the whole stay (12 days). I asked for a copy of the Motel Policies and the Manager was just making up rules on the spot (By the way, if you dont clean up the place after you leave is a $50 Dollar penalty). I asked for help to EXPEDIA and the person I spoke agree with the Manager, even the only rule for cancelation apply to a no Show Guest. I was told that I was being given a break and I have to pay or stay 48 Hours but beacuse it was Monday I already got charge the night (even still hours away for the check out of the 1st night) So the choice was to stay or pay 72 hours or pay the 12 dyas, Also the Manager already charge the whole stay the first day, no pending but charge to the credit card. A few more things about the room. No coffee maker machine, not hair dryer; everytime I use the hot water I was afeaid the pipes will explote as they make so loud noise. The bedding smell musky and even the towels are old. I asked for a rag for the kitchen and I got one full of hair and smell bad , I had to buy supplies from the store to make the stay bearable. I was surplrise of the lack of help from Expedia,
- Sharon (8/5): - The price is right for a quick stop. If staying for longer than 1 night, bring your own pillows. I can do a maximum of 1 night on a flat pillow.
The room was clean, but dated. Screens for the back windows would be appreciated. A coffee pot (1 instant coffee packet was provided) would also be nice. Jenny was friendly and accommodating.
- calogero (6/5): - the place was clean and they try hard with the place but it needs to be update and a face lift is needed.
- Ankush (2/5): - Very worst staff bakwas hotel
- Doug (8/5): - Definitely not as bad as other reviewers say. Sure it’s dated but everything worked and it was clean.
- P (10/5): - The lady who checked us in was very friendly and brought us extra towels etc because we are a family of 4. We had a late check in at 10pm too. The room was good and clean considering it's the cheapest place to stay.
- Gary (10/5): - It was what I wanted. A low cost motel. That was clean, warm. And we had good service. I was very happily with our one night stay
- Diane (2/5): - place was locked up & very shabby & rundown. We didn't stay
- John (10/5): - Nice place to stay , Staff was very helpfull .
- James (2/5): - Room was not clean and had a weird smell
- Tysha (2/5): - This is an extremely derelict motel that is not only filthy and horribly disgusting on the inside, the outside is piled with trash and piles of old metal pieces, broken glass and the lot. Only the owner Jenny runs it who pretends to not know English when it suits her. Just gross. We tried to sort it out with her but she doesn’t care and also, suddenly could not understand English. I am also contacting Expedia to remove this property from their site. Unbelievably horrible. On. Every. Level.
- Susan (4/5): Not so pet friendly - It was fine but the motel advertises as pet friendly and somehow we ended up in a room that was not pet friendly and had to make the dog sleep in the car.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good for what we needed - Our room was fine. It had enough room for our family of 5 to sleep comfortably. Its furnishings are outdated and the kitchen cabinets were old and worn but all in all it did the job. Parking was right outside the front door which was nice. We only stayed one night as we passed thru.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Beds were comfortable.
One set of towels for three days.
Small tv. No air conditioning Temp. 30 C, only a fan.
no comp. coffee.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The WiFi was terrible, no hair dryer, no iron, no exhaust fan in the bathroom. The exhaust fan in the kitchen withdraw the smoke from the stove and recycle it back to the room (not to outside)
- Verified traveler (4/5): - In need of upgrading. Large hot water tank in the bathroom has a pipe that i walked into. $50 charge if you leave dishes in the sink. Paper thin towels.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Very run down - towels were clean.
Place to sleep
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The unit I rented was not clean. Old soap in the bathroom, Shower stall soap ledges caked with old soap and shampoo. cupboards dirty, no dish cloths or towels for the kitchen.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Long discussion with the lady from the motel that we have to give ALL the information of our credit card. I never had to give the 3 digits on the back writing down someone. It was booked online already and when I pay there with the same card they should be able to block a deposit without writing the card details down?! Don't know if this is normal but we never had that case before. Don't like it because feels not safe to write down all this details...
- Paul-Emile (10/5): as expected. very good - Very good
- Cam (8/5): - Booked on very short notice, it was clean and well located.
- Sybil (6/5): You get what you pay for! - Due to covid, the owners were very cautious. The room was stale and smelled of smoke. It was clean, but old and tired looking. Curtains hanging off the rod, stains on bedspread. Stains on the carpet. The door was stuck and hard to open. No security chain, it was gone.
For a quick stop over, it worked, but wouldn’t stay again.
- L1251AOmelissas (2/5): BLACK MOLD - This motel was visited by a single mother and her 3 kids! She could severe black mold growing in the room and when she asked to be moved they wanted her to pay extra! I don’t recommend staying here unless you want to get sick or be treated poorly! Gross rooms and a gross management!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - My husband and I gav been here 3# it’s cheap but cozy and PRIVATE
- Nick (6/5): PR Christmas - Basic Motel Ok and relatively comfortable
- Verified traveler (2/5): - They did not have the booking I made. I got a different room, no heat & no coffee...not impressed
- flyfishn (2/5): Needs TLC and then some. - Stayed here as I thought it was reasonably priced.
The front door which is right at the parking area didn’t even have a dead bolt.
1/3 of the lights did t work.
No pulls on any cabinets in the kitchen.
No bathroom fan.
Shower head was at 5’9’’.
Door on fridge was on the wrong side.
No oven mitts.
Appliances all did work.
Pillows were needing to be a tad thicker.
Garbage (wrappers) under the beds.
Curtain rods looked to be coaxial cable.
BBQ area was a joke. Crappy tables and don’t think the BBQ even worked.
Lots of parking.
Loud as single pane windows and right off the 101 hwy.
No closet for the main living area.
Hope this helps.
My 2 CT’s.
- Marcrobitaille23 (2/5): Beware - Beware!!! Do not stay at this dump! We booked for 3 nights at hotels.com.And you put a credit card on file and pay after your time is up .After 1 sleepless night we realized we could not stay here with our 3 year old. The owner billed our credit card for all 3 nights and refuses to refund us for the 2 nights we didn't stay. She claims to speak no English when convinient and says she just works there has nothing to do with payment when confronted. The rooms are old and outdated. The pictures in their add on hotels.com are from the previous owner many years ago!! Run down dump managed by someone unwilling to work with let alone even have an actual conversation with anyone. We have been trying to recoup our 2 nights fee that we didn't stay and we just found out that she billed our credit card again. That was August this in now February! We now had to cancel our credit card today so she doesn't decide to bill us again!!!!
- Q2820CQwilliamf (2/5): Beware and be warned!!! - BEWARE!!! Manager is crazy!!! Booked room on booking.com. Called motel to ask for late check out (1 hr past regular) and wanted to charge me 1/2 day. Completely unreasonable. Manager tried to charge me 2nd time at check in. When I told her I alredy paid through booking.com she got hostile and abusive. I phoned booking.com and had them speak to her. She accused me of calling a friend and trying to scam her. Accused me of being a thief and threatened to call RCMP. Booking.com manager called her and she still refused to acknowledge payment. Flipped out on my gf. Refused to check us in. Wouldn’t let us use restroom while we waited 2 hrs for her and booking.com to try to work things out. GF forced to pee in bushes beside hotel office (very humiliating). Did not honour booking.com agreement. We had to move to other hotel. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! Manager is a lunatic!!! It should be asylum not a motel!!!!!
- 725debram (2/5): Not great. - We stayed one night. Said it was pet friendly. That must mean you get the worst room. We are not fussy but really!?!?!!!! Old old beds. Big hot water tank I bathroom. Asked for more pillows as the ones in the room were so flat. Everything so old and decrepit. Just sad. Please don't say you're pet friendly if that means the room is your worst. Would not recommend this motel.
- 714margw (2/5): Marg - OK the lady running the place was super nice..but no coffee maker no plug-ins any where near a mirror...Blew breaker trying to use hairdryer after I asked for an extension cord... old and needs upgrades I wouldn't stay her again
- 404albertap (2/5): DON'T DO IT! - This place is filthy, run down, and absolutely desperate. We booked here due to the fact they had a "family" room. The beds were extremely uncomfortable, and the mattresses were filthy. We bought bleach to clean everything in the cupboards, and bathroom before we used it. Not to mention we were woken by some other patrons yelling at each other out in front of our room. The lady at the motel did nothing about this, and made no attempt to apologize and assure us it was not a normal thing.
The fridge didn't work, the toilet didn't flush properly, and all the furniture in the room looked like garage sale rejects. The room smelt as bad as it looked as well.
We checked out early to go stay in another hotel, and of course with the seven day cancellation policy we didn't get our refund. I understand why they do this, as I am sure they have lots of people that leave early.
DON'T DO IT!
- 846harveyp (2/5): Desperate for business!! - We booked two rooms and two days in advance, we wanted to change this to one room and were told their policy is we have to make changes at least 7 days in advance (every place I have stayed in the last 20 years is 24 hrs and some places is zero advance time!!). Then, my daughter went into labour as we arrived and I tried to cancel because of this family emergency and were told the same line. I even offered to pay half rates but they wouldn't budge one dime. Looking at the other reviews I can see why no one wants to stay here as there weren't many cars in the parking lot. Terrible business practices ;-(
- 527lynnk (2/5): Rustic but not in a good way - This hotel has no window screens, no air condition so no way to keep it cool. Tons of spider webs. Bathroom floor is dirty Door does't shut Beds are small doubles. No many things good about this hotel. I booked four nights staying three and they still made me pay for four even though I cancelled three days in advance. Most hotels are 24 hours
- 685patrickt (2/5): Very poor value - Stayed 2 nights over the labour day weekend and wished I had looked around for a better deal but it was late at night. You can see in the photos that I have included that it would appear that these folks obtained the furnishings by the roadside for free. The bathroom door in the cabin would not close because the hot water tank was in the way. Many of the furnishings were broken, the chairs were spray painted and badly worn. The only things I would say on the plus side were that the room was clean, nice new TV and the bed was comfortable. My advice...stay somewhere else.
- 143basilb (4/5): Shabby and dirty - The cabin we stayed in was extremely shabby, the carpet was badly stained, the kitchen was poorly equipped and the cutlery and crockery in the cupboards and drawers were greasy with remnants of food still on them (I had to wash everything thoroughly before using any of it). The only saving grace was that the bed was comfortable (although it was a small double bed), and the water was hot. Will not be staying there again!
- marcvdb (4/5): Exaggerated well presented - We were also expecting more. Our reserved room was rented to someone else. We got another in the place that was too broad. The room smelled musty. Decrepit atmosphere. However, not far from the ferry. Kitchen is not much. It is found together some kitchen utensils.
