Guest Reviews
- Shannan (10/5): -
- Nicky (4/5): - Very old and worn out, exceptionally noisy in the street and sad area
- Piers (8/5): Overall great value for money. Has all the basics and friendly staff - Great old building just off the town centre. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Limited breakfast options. Especially drinks.
- Christine (8/5): Very happy with my 2 night stay - Great to find a hotel with single rooms at the front of the property instead of being hidden away at the back. Yes, that does come with some road noise but this was not a problem. The location in the centre of town was wonderful - just a 15 minute walk to the station or a 5 minute walk to bus station. Great breakfast. I did not try the restaurant for evening meal but it was available if required.
- Simone (9/5): -
- Evans (6/5): - Good location in centre of town. The band playing rather loud beliw our bedroom.
- Rebecca (10/5): -
- Pierre (8/5): Bien pour une étape cycliste. - L’accueil très professionnel. La
Chambre confortable. Pouvoir rentrer mon vélo à l’abri.
En plein centre ville Le petit déjeuner peu garni en fruits et yaourts.
- Paul (8/5): Lovely hotel only let down by the disgusting stairs and room corridors carpet - The room, bathroom, bar area and restaurant were all superb. The food was excellent although I couldn’t eat my burger as it was the type of pinkish meat I don’t like (a full refund was given, thank you) but the rest of the food was lovely. Very handy having a private car park at the rear but my word it was extremely narrow to get to - take your time and watch your wing mirrors!! We couldn’t open the window in our room so a fan would have been appreciated. The hotel looked a bit shabby from the outside but was stunning the moment we stepped through the front door, until we got to the main stairs that is… the carpet going up the stairs and along the room corridors was absolutely disgusting. Get this replaced as a priority and you’ll have one fine hotel.
- Angie (8/5): First time visiting camarthen for the weekend, would definitely go again - Right in town centre , good value for money , clean and tidy Stairs were steep up to room , breakfast wasn’t the best so decided to eat else where on the evening
- Travellin' Man (7/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): Good value for money , lovely stay - Lovely room , single but well appointed. En-suite was excellent with good sized shower Had evening meal and breakfast and the food and service was very good Helpful staff who organised a taxi for me Quite a few stairs to room
- Sian (9/5): Warm Welcome and Comfy Bed - The staff were super friendly. We had major train delays so were 2 hours late for our plans. Staff let us just throw our bags at them when we arrived so we could dash to get to our plans, and we checked in later that evening.
When we checked in later that evening around 8:30pm, as it was a Sunday unfortunately we were too late to have dinner (we'd half planned to eat there). Staff gave us some good recommendations for places open nearby for dinner, which was nice of them to help us.
Breakfast was a cooked breakfast you can choose from a menu, full cooked breakfast, omelettes, bacon sandwiches, etc. They also do a vegetarian fry up. Plus a modest continental breakfast buffet with croissants, fruit, yogurts and cereal. Decaf instant coffee was available and appreciated!
Room was clean and a good amount of space to move around for for cases, wardrobe, hairdryer etc. Good space for a twin room. Plus, a power strip in between the 2 beds so "power plug by the bed" box was ticked :)
Bed and bedding was super comfortable and the bathroom looks to have been refurbished fairly recently. I last stayed at the Boar's Head 10 years ago, and I remember the bathroom was definitely different then. Room also looked like it was fairly recently refreshed, new carpet and a repaint.
Internet worked well enough too (didn't use too much but was enough for watching videos).
We only stayed one night on a flying visit to Carmarthen but we felt welcomed and comfortable. The room rate was pretty good value for money considering the central location, easy to walk to from the station, comfy bed, and it includes a good breakfast.
Ten years ago my dad's wake was held at the Boar's Head and the staff were wonderful then too, so I will continue to consider the Boar's Head my home in Carmarthen when I'm in the area. It's very minor, but we didn't really have enough loo roll in the bathroom for 2 people 😂 I know we could've asked, but it was a bit tricky to go and ask staff during the morning routine. Usually I'd expect a spare roll in the bathroom cupboard under the sink.
The only other minor thing that was mildly annoying is that the walls are thin. The building is obviously an old building, and it definitely has charm. The bar and dining room have real character, and there's clearly been effort made to keep the bedrooms modern and fresh. However, the walls are pretty thin and we could hear everything happening in the room next door. This is not the hotel's fault at all, I realise it's an old building. It didn't affect our sleep (nor did having a room on the front of the building facing the road, the road was quiet over night). We didn't fancy knocking next door asking them to be quiet as they were clearly having a good time ;) The room smelt slightly of new paint, was quite obvious when you entered the room. But none of these were deal breakers and I'd very happily stay at the Boars Head again (as I have on a handful of occasions over the years).
- Simon (4/5): Room fine and staff were good but didn’t stay the second night because of the noise from the street. - The room was fine albeit a little small and the staff and breakfast were both good. I hate to write a bad review because I want these small independent businesses to survive…..however….The main issue we had was the noise from the street at night. Our room was above the main entrance on the road and being a Friday night the noise of powerful cars and drunk people on the street yelling until about 2am made sleep almost impossible (for me anyway, my wife managed better). And when you are forced to park the hire car on the street because the carpark is full it just adds to the stress. I understand that the hotel can’t control this but the noise was as if the people on the street were in the room! The windows really do need to be at least double glazed to reduce the noise. It was so bad that we didn’t stay as planned for the second night (being a Saturday night) and instead went elsewhere even though we lost our money. I write this not to hurt the hotel but simply to warn others. We were in room 12 and I would strongly suggest you take ear plugs in case you get this room on a Friday or Saturday night. Otherwise ask to be moved away from the street. Perhaps it’s fine during the week or we just copped a bad night. Don’t know but I didn’t want to stay another night to find out. Sorry but we won’t stay there again unless they improve the noise insulation.

- David (8/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): Definitely recommend 👌🏻 - Friendly staff. Comfortable room. Great breakfast Shower wasnt very powerful
- Martin (8/5): - Lack of power outlets. Wardrobe dominating the room
- PAL (9/5): - Na Na
- beales (10/5): Boars Head - Everything Nothing
- Richard (10/5): - Ideal location Parking is not for the faint hearted
- Stephen (8/5): -
- Lisa (6/5): Very friendly helpful staff. Bedroom clean and spacious. Food ok. - On site parking Tired and dirty carpets especially in corridors. Despite having a cocktail menu they wouldn’t make them. They claimed they didn’t have the ingredients.
- Lynn (7/5): We left early as we couldn’t cope with the stair situation. - The staff were friendly and the meals were lovely. We all enjoyed our evening meals and breakfast. Access to our bedrooms was very difficult. We are happy to do stairs but the last third flight of stairs was very steep with narrow treads and didn’t feel safe. Had trouble opening the window. Access to parking was challenging.
- Andrea (10/5): Second emergency stay whilst visiting a relative in hospital . The staff were so accommodating - Good breakfast and the staff were lovely Nothing
- David (8/5): -
- Anne (7/5): -
- Carole (8/5): -
- Shirley (4/5): Food excellent tho! - The pub food The room was not set out for travellers. You don’t need a big tv where a dressing table and mirror should be. Windows were dirty and mould on wall. No plug for sink for husband to shave!
- Tommy (7/5): -
- Andrea (10/5): - The hotel was excellent . This was booked as I had to travel 7 hours to visit my parents in a&e . The staff let me check in early as I had no sleep or facilities. Very understanding of the emergency situation I found myself in . Nothing
- Paul (6/5): - Location and the staff Basic rooms bit grubby. Breakfast was poor very burnt sausages
- Angela (4/5): -
- Jonathan (10/5): Excellent rooms, wonderful food from the restaurant, and the staff were friendly and very helpful. - The location was perfectly place, right in the town centre with close links to the buses and train station. There wasn’t anything wrong with the property.
- Richard (9/5): Good value - Clean, tidy rooms and nice breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Only a very minor thing, but the kettle in my room need to have the on button pressed continuously to boil.
- Claire (8/5): Great place in the centre of town with parking - A great place to stay right in the centre of town with free parking. The room was comfortable and very clean. The stairs to the second floor rooms are steep, luckily I didn't have much luggage to carry up.
- Carolyn (10/5): Excellent place - Excellent service. Room clean and good breakfast. Nothing. Everything was good.
- David (8/5): - Location is central, staff very friendly, food great
- Rebecca (9/5): - Super accommodating friendly staff. Great breakfast and evening meal. Parking. Comfy bed - and with the twin nice to not have the beds together. Room 10. If you dont mind i do need to leave some suggestions. Because I do the DIY in my house I know how stuff can go wrong. Because you gave us a lovely room. Bathroom - practical stuff to improve matters - no loo roll holder - so loo roll took up space and got damp as close to sink. Needs hooks on wall to keep stuff off the floor because.... shower head is too high and therefore sprays out the door as you adjust temperature. Im 4ft 10. Its just too high. As I couldn't reach the shower head to see if it would adjust away from the door opening I got soaked as did the floor. TV... oh boy took me ages to just get standard channels. I dont have a modern telly, so confused. Maybe a little note as a reminder to hit the tv button. Wipe some light oil on the curtain rails as the curtains are sticking. A good tug could bring them down and rip the rail out the wall. Hope that is ok.
- curnow (10/5): Very enjoyable. - Location is great. Breakfast was very good. X I would have had a sandwich at lunchtime - but not available on a Sunday.
- James (8/5): Lovely friendly expreiance with plenty of character - A classic dining room for breakfast, great athmosphere and staff
- Sharon (8/5): Great food - The evenjng food was excellent and the free breakfast was delicious. We're disabled and had asked for a disability room. It was on the guest floor and there were no lifts. However, someone we knew who did have a disabled room said it was very noisy next to the kitchen, she said the chop chop of food was loud.
- Jacqui (8/5): Great value for money, very clean, quiet and comfortable. - The location was great, and I especially liked having a bath, especially after a few weeks travelling.
- Jon (10/5): -
- Ceri (7/5): Cheap and cheerful fine for a one night's stay. - The room was clean and comfortable, although the stairs to the top floor are a little scary so avoid if you have any balance issues. Bathroom was good and the TV and wifi great. The food was a little disappointing. Plenty of it, but lacked any depth of flavour. Stick to eggs on toast for breakfast (generic beans (I am fussy), overcooked sausage and bacon,) but the Shir Gar butter for the toast was lovely as was the poached egg. No real coffee - sachets only, but still good value for money.
- oliver (8/5): Great place to stay in Carmarthen for the price. - It was all very comfortable and excellent value for money with very courteous staff.
- Samantha (7/5): - The room was a good size. Very clean The coffee making facilities were in front of the TV. The duvet was too small for the bed. Secondary glazing was broken in the room. So could hear everything little thing that went in outside. Wouldn't recommend that room for a quiet night. No conversation when we arrived for breakfast. Left on our own to find things. Had no idea there was coffee in a separate room until I looked for it. Cooked breakfast was ok. Worst part was the smell in the restaurant. I have no clue what it was but it was disgusting, smelt foul and musty. Awful
- James (8/5): - Old pub, with parking through a narrow passageway. Comfortable rooms. A bit short staffed
- Sharon (8/5): 🤔 - Central to town Room was not suitable as a double bed so tight by a wall and bathroom door ( bruising already on my legs ) needs a support handle to get out of the shower/ bath as if older would have struggled , TV totally in wrong spot , lots of dust ( aware of work going on but still keep it clean , handles came off the wardrobe and drawers, could do with black out blind and replace the rusty curtain rail !
Brekfast very basic choice no fresh fruit , only one juice I asked for Apple as can’t drink orange juice , making teas / coffees ourselves with sachets very basic as hotel would hope for tea pot of coffee pot.
Staff friendly 👍

- Thomas (9/5): - The staff were friendly and helpful
The food was excellent Parking
- G8931KTjohnc (8/5): Good service and food, but Parking requires good nerves. - Would certainly reccomend this hotel. Staff were great and obliging. Room was clean, and comfortable. But a bit of a climb up several steep flights of stairs. Food and service in the restaurant was very good. (Sunday evening dinner and Monday Breakfast.)
Only downside was car parking, which is accessed via a narrow old coaching entrance and twisting alley, not designed for large modern cars.
GOOD

- Martyn (8/5): Great little place and good food! - very friendly, room was great and the food was fabulous! Parking a bit tight but there is parking near by.
- Glen (7/5): - Friendliness of the staff. Restaurant prices The room was out the back off the car park (courtyard) and it was a disabled bathroom. Car park entrance very tight with little space within.
- Paul (8/5): Good value for the money. - Food was very good and large portions. Stairs were very steep upto bedroom.
- Joseph (10/5): - Cosy room clean tidy More blankets I.should of asked
- athol (9/5): Old welsh pub - Great breakfast 😋 friendly staff. Great old pub. Cold beer good selection. Wonderful range of meals on offer for dinner. Chatted with staff they were lovely. The stairs to the top floor rooms are a killer, maintenance around the place could do with some attention.
- Linda (9/5): -
- John (8/5): - Location No heating in room
Told at dinner an hour to wait
Breakfast unenjiyabke
- Sachin (9/5): -
- Hari (10/5): - Everything was great!
- Gary (7/5): Boars Head Carmarthen - The location and room. We were in room 10 that overlooked the high street and taxi rank. It was very noisy at around 1am.
- Swaminathan Sridhar (9/5): - Great bfast and stay!! Nothing specific
- Andrew Paul (8/5): - Friendly , helpful staff, warm and welcoming, great location, handy parking at the rear, lovely room. Bed although a good size was too soft for me, great breakfast let down by instant coffee from individual sachets.
- Freya (8/5): - Room was very spacious with a big bed. Breakfast was good
- Trystan (4/5): -
- Ann (10/5): Really lovely place to stay in Carmarthen, friendly staff, good food and clean, comfortable rooms - What a great find, the lady who checked us was lovely, really friendly and helpful, the rooms were spotless and location was great. Good choice for breakfast too, can’t fault it. Thank you!
- Ray (8/5): -
- deanmW1828BM (10/5): Birthday treat - Excellent value for money hotel. Stayed there for my 60th birthday celebrations of which they added balloon and banner in our room for that extra touch.
Great location in the town with a lovely bar and helpful staff on hand.
Finished off with an excellent breakfast with great choice and produce.
Many thanks
- Emily (8/5): -
- Ruth (10/5): Great place to stay. - The room was lovely, clean, enough space for the two of us, we only stayed one night. The bathroom was spotless, toiletries and towels were provided. The breakfast was excellent too. The staff were really friendly and accommodating. Nothing, everything was great.
- Jonathan (8/5): a pleasant stay - Very well run hotel, comfortable room, good food and helpful and friendly staff. N/A
- T (2/5): - The bed was comfortable. The Hotel itself had character. The Welcome wasnt great. The dinner and breakfast was cold. Confusion at breakfast where told to sit. Four flights of steep stairs to room.
- Rashmi (7/5): Comfortable double room, but not much working space if using lap top on the table. - The evening meal ( lamb cawl) was delicious, and staff very welcolming.
The morning breakfast was ok. As it was an old but atmospheric building, the stairs were a bit of a challenge as ones to top floor were quite steep ( and staff warned about this on arrival). So a little difficult if carrying a suitcase, though I suppose a room on a floor lower could have been arranged, if asked.
- Esther (9/5): Great stay and Dee was exceptionally helpful and professional! - The property was very centrally located All was good except the scafoout side of our window!
- Trevor (8/5): Apart from the issue with double glazed window, - Central location near town centre.Well received at reception, bar service very good. The evening meal menu would suit the hungriest of guests.
Staff service very good. The room we occupied faced the main road. Unfortunately, one of the secondary double glazing sections was broken and whilst we slept soundly for most of the night, heavy goods vehicles passing the hotel from 6:30 am roused us earlier than expected.
That said if the window had been fully installed, this report would be a lot better.- we would stay here again
- Anna Vitória (8/5): Good hotel but not great sleep - The location is great, beds super comfy, the breakfast was great aswell, friendly staffs tho Super noisy, couldn’t sleep as people were yelling in the street (normal for a Friday night I know, but the other guests were trying to get in our room, they thought was their room, super drunk).
The hotel was worth the money tho
- Brian (7/5): Fairly basic accommodation with very friendly and helpful staff. Easy to get in and out of town. - Well presented residential accommodation with comfortable rooms and an excellent bathroom. Meal sizes are truly massive so if you like a hearty dinner then this could be the place for you, but with a caveat on standards!
Very easy to access in and out of the town, so handily positioned for getting around the local area. One evening meal (Salty and Sticky Chicken) was utterly appalling and was promptly sent back; the chicken pieces were bone dry and rock hard - when pressed with a knife they eventually cracked in half. The issue was handled well by the waitress though.
Our room was 2 floors up and the second set of stairs were steep and narrow, so very tricky for someone with any mobility issues. Worth checking with the hotel when booking.
Access to the small car park is through a narrow tunnel at the side. My Peugeot 2008 fitted through but the proximity warning sensors were chirping away all the time. I doubt if a large SUV would fit, so perhaps check with the hotel if you have a large vehicle.
