Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This time ok only. Room too close to some powering machine motor very noisy. The rest ok
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Room is lovely with wood floors and tiles in bathroom and corridors . The furniture is real wood and i loved it. I will definitely stay there again. Location was convenient as I was there for work two blocks away.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I just need a clean room for the night, so was fine for me. Also, nicely located near the waterfront
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not worth the price - I picked this place because of it's location in Georgetown and the pictures they provided in the hotel bio. Those pictures had to have been taken about 15 years ago because the room didn't look exactly as it did in the pictures. I will say had the room been in good condition, it would look like a decent room with a lot of character. Unfortunately the room was run down and in need of refurbishment. All the furniture including the safe was damaged as shown in the pictures. The bathroom had moisture damage on the ceiling as well. The room had beautiful hardwood floors but it was so slippery I could skate on the floor with my bare feet. The room was full of mosquitoes and I had to kill about 3 of them but there were still more. To make matters worse, there was a man that worked in the building making a lot of noise. He loitered in the lobby on the couch all day yelling at some woman on speaker phone. I am not exaggerating when I say this man was on the phone ALL DAY... Must have been some really important conversations because at first it didn't seem like he worked there. They advertised a rooftop lounge area at that top of the building but the security guard that worked their refused to let us go up there saying it was closed. Definitely false advertisement in their hotel ad and you can get something a lot better for the price they charge.
- David seow (6/5): Bad check in experience - Very bad check in service when I reach hotel at 2am. The person Don't know how to link the system with website. Kept asked me to paid full amount that I already paid online. No people come and solve the problem due to cleaner and front desk same person. The person unexperience for system. My check in time for wasted about near 1 hour.
- K.S (6/5): - It seems not to be 4-star hotel. there are dusts on room’s floor, and outside is always noisy due to crowded cars, even in midnight.
- Selene (8/5): - Nice place to stay, just that no place for parking
- Paul (2/5): Dont stay here, full of vermin. - Very run down,no internet because of heritage area. Was going to take photos of vermin fighting in the room, just couldnt check out fast enough, and find new hotel.
- Lawvin (6/5): Good location. - The stay was fine but nothing special. The bed made noises, and the shower was plugged. The room is spacious and it’s in a great location. It does the job!
- brett (4/5): - wi-fi unusuable in room. water damage in ceiling multiple places. hole in ceiling with drops of water on the floor.
- Vin (8/5): - Nice hotel. Difficult to find parking during day time. Other than that its a very nice place to stay
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Close to Langkawi ferry. A 5 - 10 minute walk. Entrance to hotel a little tricky to find as it’s a narrow door and then up some stairs to reception. Hotel is not wheelchair accessible (from main entrance at least).
Reception doesn’t take credit cards and if you have pre-paid for your accommodation you will be asked to pay a deposit in cash which they will return to you when you check out.
The hotel does not contain a restaurant or bar but there are close-by outside options. Including, unfortunately, a karaoke bar that is quite audible from your room. Sometime after midnight, things quieter down.
The hotel needs a little paint in the common areas and our room had peeling paint in places and water stains and damage to the ceiling plaster.
The room furniture needs a little TLC with for example knobs missing from a dresser.
There’s no serviceable WiFi in the hotel and little of interest to traveler on the TV as There was no active subscription to the premium (read not local Malay) channels eg HBO, BBC, Discovery. If you have time to kill, you’ll have to go out for entertainment.
Also worth noting there is no mosquito netting over the bathroom window — which is permanently open to the outside. I would recommend keeping the bathroom door closed at night.
All that being said, the room and linens were very clean. The reception staff were bright and personable. For an overnight stay, Chambers Hotel is acceptable.
- Shafiq (10/5): Don't judge a 📙 by its cover... - Everything was superb... Easily to access to all places... U will be amazed when u enter the room... Totally different from what you are expecting.. Totally worth it... With the price of the room, u can't get it anywhere else...
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing - The staff are friendly, the room is clean, spacious, and as you enter, you'd be greeted with a refreshing smell of citronella which helps in relaxation. This boutique hotel is very well equipped. It even has a safe box for those who needs it. The staff are friendly and the location is amazing. The cafe below serves amazing cakes. Quite a number of museums are within walking distance of this Hotel. This hotel is also just 2 minutes walk from where I need to go for work. So it's all good. I will definitely recommend this hotel and I would book again in the future.
- YH (8/5): Decent hotel - Located at the edge of Georgetown, it's close to a few places of interest and, for meals, there are a 7-11, a Subway and a cafe called Constant Gardener Coffee next door, and a restaurant inside that opens till midnight.
The receptionist was helpful and friendly, and the check in process was smooth and efficient.
The room was spacious and nicely furnished, but was rather dim. They definitely tried to remedy the mosquito infestation mentioned in previous reviews, but the three repellents in the room and the mosquito coils burning in the lobby still failed to completely prevent them from staying in the rooms. It was not pleasant to go to bed only to find a mosquito chilling on the pillow. Since the source is outside, there really isn't any other way to solve this problem as far as I know.
By the way, the repellents also used up most of the available power outlets in the room, leaving just two for use, one of which was rather inconveniently located behind the couch.
They also reduced the noise from outside with all the layers of windows but the occasional bass from somewhere nearby can still be heard at night, not to mention the general traffic noise given the proximity of the windows to the roads.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff very polite
Nice room,comfortable & very clean.
- Joyce (10/5): Large, comfortable room - Located on the edge of Georgetown, the hotel is about 10 mins walk from the ferry terminal if you are coming from the mainland. We stayed overnight before leaving for Singapore in the morning. The hotel itself is in a heritage building with nicely restored features, although there was a slight damp smell in the corridors. I believe there is an attached restaurant on the rooftop although it is very close to the Little India area and Chulia Street, both of which offer a plethora of tasty and budget-friendly local food options. Georgetown itself is very picturesque, and worth spending at least a few hours in. The room was extremely spacious, with a huge bed and sofa. There is a 7-11 just below the hotel if you need snacks and drinks.
- Jean (10/5): Great value in a great location - A great unexpected find. Room was spacious and well appointed. Nice antique furniture. Good-looking bathroom. Only bad thing were the mosquitoes. Room can be noisy because of the street it faces.
- William (6/5): Central hotel opposite Esplanade area - Looking for a hotel for a weekend in Penang and this was recommended by a friend. Overall a good place to stay with the benefit of nearby amenities
- S. (6/5): Nice room but full of mosquitos and traffic noise! - Room is very specious ok comfortable; strong cold A/C. New LED tv with satellite box.
But the big problem this guesthouse is full of mosquitos! After enter the room spend 20mins killing more than 15-20 mosquitos! Receptionist provide bug spray but it’s not safe to use before sleep! The main road outside is traffic noise non stop all night, hard to sleep. Disappointing experience given the nice decor.
- Lynne (10/5): Clean and Comfortable in a Great Location - My husband, 13 year old daughter and I stayed at the Chambers for 5 nights and we were very pleased with our stay there. I had initally booked 3 nights, checking in Dec 30, 2017 and checking out Jan 2, 2018 but after our first night we were so happy with the hotel, location, and staff that we asked to stay 2 more nights. The room was large and had a big window that faced the ocean (partial view) and a big grassy public area called the Padang Kota Lama, Fort Cornwalis is across the street and 2-3 minute walk to Little India, 5 min walk to Kwan Yin temple, 7-10 min walk to Chulia St. There is WiFi in the room but very sluggish at times, we went to the Constant Gardener coffe shop right downstairs for WiFi and coffee which worked out great. The hotel is small and charming, the staff was kind and attentive. There was one staff person who spoke very good English and was a great resource for activities, buses, taxi in Penang. Also if you ask, the hotel will do laundry, during our stay 8 RM (about 2 USD) per kilogram, which I thought a good price for not having to lug laundry around to find a cheaper place. I gave the laundry to the person at the front desk about 9 am and we received it that same evening. Overall I highly recommend The Chambers.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice location, friendly staff, reasonably price - We booked a family room for 3 nights. There are 2 queen-size beds and big bathroom. The staff there is very friendly. We're very happy with the service and the room. It's beyond our expectation.
There is only one small thing; the floor in our room is quite dusty.
- YN (10/5): excellent - excellent
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice!!! - Room is big compared to others hotel. Very easy to find just at the roadside. Fell in love the room decoration seems like classic but exclusive. The staff also friendly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice - The size of room is superb big compared to others hotel. Love the furniture in the room like classic but exclusive. Location easy to find just near roadside.
- Col & Cath (6/5): Handy hotel close to facilities in Georgetown - We stayed for a week and overall were pleased with the experience
- Tamil Eniyan (10/5): Best Hotel for the price in a good location - I stayed in chambers for 2 weeks, when i reserved it, i was reading mixed reviews about the hotel, i wasnt expecting it to be very good.
But to my surprise, The Chambers hotel was one of the best ones i have ever stayed, considering the price.
The hotel staff were very friendly, they helped me every time when i need something.
The hotel was very clean, The room was spacious enough with a 40 inch TV, minibar etc..
its located close the sea, though there is no sea view from the hotel window, the seashore just 5 mins walk .
I would definitely recommend this hotel
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Medium hotel nearest the jetty point (Penang-Langkawi)
- Yuyu (10/5): Excellent stay! - Been upgraded to family room with two king beds. Rooms was extremely big for us. The bed was so comfy clean n yeah i couldnt leave it! The bed was so gooood!
- SI ANN (6/5): - The room seems fine but if I look at it carefully , the shower & the mini blinds are very dirty ! The next morning I noticed my face was full insects bites perhaps bed fleas ...
- iz (6/5): spacious but few things could be improved - great room in term of space.great shower..lovely bed and sofa however it could be better by emphasizing on dusting.found left drinks in the minibar fridge during checked in.rubbish was not cleared on the nextday of hkp service.lots of mosquitoes during night time.
- SL (8/5): convenient, comfortable king bed and spacious room - Poor Wifi, had ask for room service, but not done, room cleaning was not well done. Car has to park at roadside and no lift. However, the hotel is like family business, can have flexible check out time, more relax, no need to worry about late charge penalty. The staffs will help you to carry up/down your luggage.
- Han (2/5): Unbelievable Stay. - I am writing to inform about the stay in the hotel.
-there is no housekeeping
-my room was not dusted
-bed sheets was not even changed with red stains
-one light blown off since day 1 and no one bat an eye
-no astro connection for 4 days(means no tv to accompany you)
-internet connection was a internet disconnection at all time
-staffs do not bother to check with upper management and wait for next shift to handle
-everyday been a routine feedback given to them but no one handle
- David (6/5): Gem that needs a professional to cut and polish - We loved the decode, the roominess and location, but we booked a huge comfy room too enjoy It, sadly the cable tv bill was unpAid so we had no TV for a historic event that political junkies world wide had planned for. A 48 inch tv with no reception for 3 days was just sad. In the end the interior designers and developers deserve a round of applause, but the services that would make it liveable are seriously lacking or management just doesn't have it.
- chan (6/5): Parking issues despite great central location - Don't expect boutique style comforts..there was not even a complimentary bottle of water and the showers were covered in mould but having said that upon asking was spotlessly cleaned by the staff..friendly old school staff at night that were informative about the street level council parking-was v helpful the old school uncle..the parking like I said is a major issue, you may need to drive around a few rounds to find a park ESP during the day,,Either that or as the lady at the durin desk told me parking easier after 5pm
- ElCedrico (4/5): Not what was expected. - The good: Owner of the hotel was quite friendly. Helped us organise a taxi and let us leave our bags in reception after checking out. The room had some beautiful furniture.
The bad: Not what was advertised. No free mini bar, no bottled water. No coffee making supplies. No slippers. No daily housekeeping. All of this was advertised when I booked. The room wasn't clean and even had rubbish left in the drawers. Also a bar underneath us played crazy loud music every night until 3am. So much base. The bar isn't run by the hotel so I guess not much they can do. The hotel does need to change its price and advertising though. Basically fraud.
- Atish (8/5): Very good hotel with a great location - Good Hotel, Clean Rooms and Good Beds. The room was pleasant and big enough. The Shower was not working very well - low water pressure. There was no Room Service Menu or other fancy options provided. This hotel is located just next to Little India and near the Trick Art Museum which made it easy to roam around. Would recommend this hotel.
- suraiya (10/5): Lovely hotel! - The location is the real plus of the hotel if you want to be in the middle of heritage area. The hotel room was clean, well designed, spacious and bed really comfortable. Value for money!
- radzi (6/5): Good location - Walking distance to the interesting place in Georgetown area or Padang Kota lama..
No parking space for customer having a car need to find any nearby parking space
- Tung (8/5): Great Hotel nearby the DUN and Courts - Pleasant hotel with accommodating staffs. The counter staff was very nice whenever I approach him for assistance with the room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Large room but awful service - If you are looking for a big room and tv then this place is it - but that is all. The room does NOT come with toiletries or mini bar items as promised and house cleaning only empties the trash and restocks the toilet paper. We didn't even get soap until the second day. We asked and they said they do not provide and that hotels.com was not updated yet. When we arrived they tried to give us the deluxe room (queen bed) although we paid for a premier room (king bed), then made us feel bad that they had to rearrange things to accommodate us. Service is awful and they sincerely don't want you to bother them. It's unfortunate because it could be a spectacular hotel.
- William (8/5): Enjoy our stay at the CHAMBERS - We spent sometime locating the main entrance to the hotel. Is kind of hidden with no sign board as the check-in counter was up a flight of curve stairs on the first floor.
The room is spacious and clean. Toilet and shower is clean with good running of hot water. Bed is comfortable with one additional pillow.
Location is good. Free shuttle bus bus stop is just 4 mins walk. 711 store is on the ground floor. Reception is helpful with queries.
Free WIFI is slow and at time die. Loud music blast from the PUB on ground floor can be disturbing for those early sleeper.
Overall, I recommend to those who are looking for a reasonable price hotel to give a try.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Comfy stay - Very spacious and comfortable rooms.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Excellent hotel with confused staff - Physically this new hotel is an excellent example of Colonial style restoration with large, clean & comfortable room. Pityfully, the staff didn't live up to the hotel's reputation. As much as they intended to help with their friendly manners, they were not well-trained. Lots of confusions & miscommunications, even between the morning, evening & night shifts.
I had called a week ahead to ask about the availability of an extra bed & so I reserved with an extra bed. Upon arriving, the staff was clueless about it. Long story short, turns out the hotel doesn't have an extra bed, only a sofa bed. Even then, it wasn't made up & there wasn't any blanket available/lprovided. I had to persuade the staff to get the blanket from the show-room.
I wonder how this hotel earned its 4 stars?
- Elizabeth (8/5): Interesting decor hotel - This hotel is a lovely restored Colonial building and my room was nice and large. The provisions were very good in the room and the bed was comfortable. I have mobility problems and the stairs up to reception were hard for me so if you have mobility problems be aware that there is no lift.
- Cloud (10/5): Comfort Room and Nice Service - During my wife and my departure at the reception counter, one of the staff (it was a guy, forgot the name) found out thru system that we had cancelled our booking. I was surprised and shocked how this would happened, we just changed the date, not cancelled.
The guy quickly calm us down and do his best to find out the problem and at last luckily, they still have empty room for us.
Without further delay, another girl called Mary, brought us to our room and asked us to wait at door side. She quickly opened up all the room lights and air-cond for us. Furthermore she explain to us all the refreshment in the room including those in fridge was free of charge. Lastly she even run back reception counter and delivery to door for the hotel WiFi info.
The room was comfort and nice, the space in the room was just nice. Especially like their hotel service, I'm quite satisfied with that. Special thanks to the guy and Mary for warm and nice service. Keep it up.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location/value hotel - Great location for sight seeing and restaurants. Friendly staff and good value for size of room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Bad location - It is not what I thought. Bad WiFi, bad location, the bed is uncomfortable, I don't recommend it.
- Egbert (8/5): Great - Very good
- Daniel (6/5): Great Little Boutique - This was a great little place to stay at a great price. It's a smaller hotel that just opened in the last year so everything is new, clean and updated. The staff was great and friendly and always quick to help. This place was perfect for my needs.
Pros:
Large room, King Bed
Room was new, clean and well apportioned
Good location in George Town, near Little India
Friendly, helpful staff
Cons:
Rooms are close to street so there is some street noise
There are no amenities (pool, gym, etc.)
