- Stephen (10/5): This hostel is a rare gem and I would definitely stay there if I ever had the chance again. - The location was amazing, we were so close to the ocean that we could hear the surf pounding all night long. We also spotted whales just off the shore. Shared bathrooms aren't perfect, but it wasn't a problem, especially if you consider the value for the location we stayed.
- Yifen (6/5): The room I live in with my children is only about 45 square feet, and it is difficult to turn around. I didn't sleep - Beautiful scenery The room is extremely small, sharing the bathroom with others, and the bed is not safe.
- Gina (7/5): A beautiful place to stay! - The location is so beautiful. I love that it's secure and people who aren't guests can't just come and go. The fire alarm went off at 6:30 am for some unknown reason the final morning. All the doors slam all the time. Maybe add some weather stripping on the frames to soften the closing. I'm sure all guests would appreciate it.
- Vince (8/5): It was truly a memorable stay if you like the sound of waves crashing on the rocks and cliffs. - The view and location was superb! Just staying at an old lighthouse was amazing. It's not your usual hotel, it's a hostel, so no special comforts like meals or nice fireplaces etc. You just go there to watch the ocean and surrounding cliffs. Shower was clean, shared, they provide linens, towels etc. Beds were also made. There is a shared kitchen which was kept clean. The rooms were a little small for the 3 person room, one would have to climb to the bunk bed. Other than that we had an amazing room with a view facing the cliffs and beach below. I don't think you can change an old lighthouse building, so you can't make rooms bigger, but maybe re-organize the beds to make more space. They were bolted to the floor so we could not move it. Maybe more hooks to hang stuff like the micro hotels we see now.

- Anna (7/5): It was an adventure! Glad I stayed there! - Beautiful location! A historical hidden gem Sleeping accommodation
- Aleksandar (10/5): Excellent location, great views - Location, view from the lodge and local beach, comfortable common space and well equiped kitchen No comments

- Vladimir (10/5): -
- Maciej (9/5): chciałbym spędzić tam miesiąc - Lokalizacja, klimat, dostęp do plaży - bajkowe Warunki sanitarne do poprawy niewielkim kosztem, światło w łazience, światło w ubikacji, proste jasne kafelki nawiązujące do xix wiecznej ceramiki - i już by było lepiej
- Gina (7/5): Beautiful, friendly place to stay - I love that it sits right on the cliffs above the ocean. It's an absolutely beautiful location. I love that it is only accessible with a key pad code for the gate. It's secure. The staff is friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. The kitchen is very well equipped, and the beds are clean and comfortable. The barbecue is set up right outside the kitchen, so charcoal smoke fills the house if folks don't close the windows first. It also sits too close to the house, presenting a potential fire hazard.
The first night, some guy passed out drunk on the couch. He was still out when I left mid morning to go explore the beaches
- 5ringsman (10/5): Picturesque and relaxing weekend gateway - Clean and well equipped hostel, comfortable beds, secure room and lockers. Big kitchen and dining/living room area. Friendly staff. Stunning location on a cleaf overseeing the ocean, private beach access (not for swimming), picture perfect! Ideal for a relaxing solo weekend (as I did). Walking distance to a delicious sandwich place, walking/biking trails by the ocean, marine reserve with sea lions. A bus (or bike) ride away from Half moon bay town and beaches. Many hiking, biking, surfing, wild life wathcing, beach life opportunities if you're driving. Not the easiest place to reach by public transit, but nothing that a private car or uber can't solve if you're in a rush.
- Trisha (10/5): Amazing - Quiet and peaceful
- Paul (8/5): Great! -
- Paul (9/5): A perfect place to spend my birthday! - Quiet and gorgeous location! Lighthouse needs a good paint job, but I imagine it has to do with finding the funding.
- Jeffrey Myers (9/5): - The mountains meet the sea. In t jo

- Lucy (10/5): Highly recommend HI Point Montara Lighthouse hostel - Natalie greeted us upon arrival and she was very professional and friendly. The private room and shared shower and bathroom were very clean. The view from our small private room was incredulous. Listening to the sounds of waves every night and morning was comforting. The sunset and sunrise were also captivating! There is a short trail from the hostel through a beautiful garden of wild flowers to get to a private beach. which was We highly recommend this hostel for all ages! Thank you HI Point Montara Lighthouse team!
- Yelena (8/5): Rustic, history feeling, close to nature and ocean. Long ocean side trails. - location, historic side. View from window. Met with nice people in the kitchen.
- Joyce (5/5): Beautiful location disappointing accommodations for the price. We paid $250. a night for 2 beds. - The views were wonderful right on the bluffs was an accessible seating area that we really enjoyed. we had access to the hostel main quarters which had a full kitchen, dining area and living room with a game table and couch and fireplace which is where we ate dinner and played cards. The beds were comfortable. and the bathroom and shower were spacious for my husbands wheelchair access. the bedrooms of the "suite" we rented were so so small, my husbands wheelchair could barely fit through the door and to get into the bed he had to back his wheelchair in so he could transfer to the bed. The windows were slightly open when we got there which was ok, but couldn't be shut completely so it was cool in the rooms. My husband being a paraplegic has temperature control issues so he needs places warm to stay. luckily the room had a heater that worked and helped. Because the wheelchair completely took up the pathway in the small room I found that instead of sleeping with my husband and having to crawl over him to get up and down at night, it was more convenient to sleep in the other bedroom of this "ADA Suite" however the heater did not work in that room and the window did not close either. The up keep of the property was poor, peeling paint, shingles missing from roof, walking paths overgrown.
- Wood (10/5): Exceptional - Nice place beautiful location.
- Heidi (10/5): I loved the stunning views, peaceful vibe, cozy stay in a historic lighthouse, and access to trails - Outstanding views, staying at a historical lighthouse, serene atmosphere, comfortable accommodations, proximity to hiking trails and restaurants NA
- Daniela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tanisha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Krystsina (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly people working at the hostel, magnifecent views of location!
- Sravan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (7/5): chilled - it was very cold that night. They were filming a movie there when I arrived. Went to a brew pub nearby. overall good but cold and windy, and dark! nothing, maybe more lights near parking
- Debbie (10/5): Exceptional - Great location and staff. Excellent experience 👏
- Dr. (10/5): highly recommended - learn more about lighthouses the steep road down, but, it kept traffic.. out
- Russel (10/5): Best Anniversary me and my wife have - the great view at the ocean when sunrise till sunset. pitch black at the entrance I hope they put a light on that's the only concern.
- Louis (9/5): Superb - Beautiful views and area, lovely people, nice stay The bed was a little too soft
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional - Breathtaking location, great kitchen with all appliances and common areas. Private rooms are pretty expensive, otherwise everything is just stunning.
- Laurie (9/5): I live in San Francisco, and it was a perfect, inexpensive getaway. - Location, friendly staff, beautiful views from the cliffs, clean, comfortable living space.
- Scholte (8/5): Very good -
- Avalos (10/5): Exceptional - The location is amazing is nice place to stay good people you can see the ocean
- Luiza (10/5): Scenic! - Uniqueness. Historical lighthouse with private beach! That I see it needs some maintenance and roofing renovation.
- Debra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Miglė (10/5): Heaven on earth. Perfect location for those who love waves, slow pace and good company mix with solitude. - It was really one of a kind place to stay 🤍! Loved everything about it - from the views to the ocean (and sunsets!), to the privacy and slow pace you can feel here. You will have pretty little garden, amazing views from the cliff, private beach, great public transport access to other beaches and ocean towns. Private parking if you arrive with a car.
Big plus - the kitchen, washing machine, sound of the ocean right from your bed, super clean bedroom/bathroom, and well-maintained, fast communication, felt safe and private.
And you can meet really good-hearted people, fellow travelers in here! 🌙✨
- Otari (10/5): Exceptional - Great place to stay!
- Ann (9/5): Wonderful. I’d go back. And recommend. . - Location. Quiet. Clean. Someone sleeping on the couch made the common area unusable.
- Nm (10/5): Amazing views, excellent value, rooms are basic but clean. - Location was excellent. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Stayed in the private rooms with shared bath (with one other private room)-very beautiful views. Rooms were clean and functional with fridge, coffee maker, microwave in small shared space with other private room. Showers had great water pressure. Saw starfish at the tide pool next to the beach. Was lucky enough to see whales-they were out in the distance but made giant splashes when they were breaching. Already trying to plan another stay. It was a privilege to be able to enjoy the beautiful setting.
- Ksenia (10/5): Best views - Incredible views! Make a cup of coffee and enjoy a morning on a bench facing the 🌊
- Alfredo (9/5): Arrived in the dark to hear the waves crashing, woke up to see the waves crashing. - Helpful staff and history Nothin
- Natalia (10/5): Amazing experience - I’m a big fan of lighthouses and have always wanted to spend a night at one. Staying at HI Point Montara Lighthouse was a dream come true and even better than I imagined. Extraordinary beautiful location, peaceful beach, gorgeous sunset. The facilities were nice and clean and it was nice to chat to other travelers from all over the world.
- Joshua (9/5): stunning - beautiful very small room for 3 people
- Thao (10/5): Exceptional -
- Greg (10/5): Exceptional -
- Flora (8/5): Very good - Comfortable bed, good lounging area, perfekt kitchen
- Joshua (9/5): Amazing location! - The location is amazing! As long as you've done your research and understand it will probably be overcast and the ocean water is cold, you won't be disappointed! Beautiful hikes are nearby, you can hear the ocean from your room. For the cost, the location can't be beat. The staff was very friendly and helpful, clearly passionate about the location. The facilities are a little run down, but overall felt clean.
- Lily (4/5): Interesting and glad I tried it, but was a very long night of little sleep - It was really nice being in a hostel with other travelers- nice to meet people and add perspective to one’s travels. That said, the down side is sharing a room where (some) people talk loudly as soon as they awake (6 am). It was musty (mildew) and not clean. While I didn’t know what to expect with bunk beds in a women’s room- it was less pleasant than I could imagine. While I can’t blame the hostel for the fact the woman in the bunk under me snored all night long, the dank and stuffy room and uncomfortable bed made it impossible to sleep (for me)- the other ladies in the room appeared to all be able to sleep. My husband was in the men’s room and while he wouldn’t want to stay again, he didn’t feel it was as bad as I did.
- Wing (9/5): Superb - great value, great location key card failed to work at middle of night
- Johnson (10/5): Amazing time with beautiful views with what felt like a private beach! - Beautiful location and views!
- Debbie (10/5): Exceptional - Scenery stunning! Location was amazing!
Beds were comfortable! We had a 2 bedroom and small kitchen area! Perfect! Would definitely recommend!
- Susan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sabinka (5/5): Passable -
- Nguyen (7/5): Good - I enjoyed my one-night stay here very much. The facility was a bit quaint but clean. I loved the view of the ocean. I would stay again if I have a chance to go back. The room was quite small for the two of us and we had to share bathroom with other guests.
- Michelle (10/5): Beautiful location and super clean. - Everything was super clean...bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and common area, etc. Quiet location. Fell asleep listening to waves crashing below. Kitchen was well-equipped and roomy. We played cards in the common area at a cute little game table. Our bedrooms door was super squeaky so going to bathroom at night woke everyone up.
- Cedric (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joseph (10/5): Exceptional -
- Victoria (9/5): Incredible views! Clean and close to SF - Incredible views, clean and comfortable. The triple room was a double bed and a single bunk, tiny room. The common facilities were clean and comfortable. Trail to the beach, pelicans, whales spouting, amazing ocean views and interesting lighthouse history. Would definitely stay again!
- Khrystyna (9/5): Superb -
- Melissa (7/5): Hidden gem for the adventurous - I paid $109 for 1 night. The view from my room was outstanding. I slept with the window open to listen to the ocean waves. The staff was very nice. Some of the guests were very friendly and some were not so social. The main house has a full kitchen available to use if you are inclined to cook. My area just had a coffee pot, small refrigerator, and microwave. You don't have a private bathroom and have to share with neighbors. My neighbors came in at 9pm and somehow the plumbing blew up. Toilet overflowed as well as shower so could not use either during my stay. Luckily, I was only there overnight. Hopefully they were able to get that fixed after I left. I hope to return in the future.
- Maxine (10/5): It was fantastic! We will go again. - Gorgeous location. Clean. Polyester sheets
- Lee (9/5): Incredible and unique with views and sounds to die for. - The location was exceptional. It was an amazing opportunity to stay at a lighthouse . I was a bit worried due to the communal nature of the hostel but it was fine and mostly felt quite private. Very clean and well stocked. I didn't really appreciate the no alcohol rule ( didn't know before arriving) but I understand why it was the case. It wouldn't be a wonderful location if there were drunk ,loud party people. However as a 50 plus woman, on holiday,l would have enjoyed a sundowner. No biggie though.
- Nelda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Espen (9/5): Ambience with a view - Amazing location, with a spectacular view from the room. Fall a sleep to the sound of waves breaking on the beach. Perfect spot to watch the sun set and enjoy your morning coffee. Very comfortable beds.
- Julie (10/5): It was a magical experience being right on the ocean. - We woke up every morning to the sound of breaking ocean waves. People were so friendly and helpful.
- Christina (9/5): The property was well taken care of and welcoming. Can’t beat the beautiful location for a peaceful and interesting sta - Can’t beat the location! Awesome very accommodating staff when we were unsure of the time of arrival. Also appreciated the updated gate entry since we were there last. Windows were pretty hard to open and close. Sink hot water faucet in the unit bathroom kept sticking and running for a long time, wasting water.
- Dena (10/5): unique, great staff, secure, beautiful - location nothing
- Martha (10/5): Exceptional - The location was so beautiful and the staff was kind and welcoming
- Nick (9/5): Superb -
- Marco (7/5): Beautiful location with a private beach. Lovely scenery like straight out of a movie. - We made a 3 weeks California round-trip and were in 8 different Hotels. This was the definitely the one which was special in a positive way. The whole location, although pretty old and loads of renovations needed, was just gorgeous and beautiful. The scenery right at a small private beach with its historic light house (which is still in duty) was like a perfect movie location. If you look for a nice location with lots of privacy and silence it is the best place to go. We enjoyed our time very much and it slowed us a bit down after other locations like Las Vegas Even though charming buildings there are renovations needed. As the Hotel is run by a non-profit organization this is probably a funding issue.
- Anonymous (6/5): Not up to standard but a lovely location. Very run down. - the property and lighthouse is very run down. the toilet was falling off the wall. everything needs updating and a good scrub. The smell in the apartment was not good. this was over £200 per night and so I did expect more. The location was breathtaking. I do think this could be completely redone and be a fabulous wedding venue with rooms. I wouldn’t choose to stay here again. The views from the bedrooms was gorgeous
- Helen (8/5): Very good -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Cute hostel in the building next to the lighthouse. Full kitchen, clean bathroom, clean bedding. Felt safe and secure. Happy to have found this place!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Could have used a more pwerful heater. Pretty cold in the "Tool Shed" at night.
- Douglas (10/5): Million dollar views; cozy interior and amenities - his is the first time I've stayed at a hostel in the U.S. I normally stay at hotels and motels. But it was a great choice. This particular location was the selling point. You're right on a cliff with a lighthouse, overlooking crashing waves and the great blue Pacific! I spent a lot of time sitting out on the benches absorbing the scene, even after dark.
Inside the hostel, you go to the front desk to check in and are given bedding and a towel, plus a magnetic key card to open your room and your private locker in the room. y small room had one bunkbed and one single bed, which I took. I had one roommate, who was friendly. We negotiated when to shut the lights and whether or not to leave the window open.
The kitchens and dining areas are a pretty wild scene, with people moving every which way preparing their meals, eating, and washing dishes. The facility is stocked with all the pots, pans, dish towels, utensils, stove, microwave, fridge, etc. that you need to deal with meals. It's a very generous setup.
There are also community lounging areas, which people were using.
While there, we were hit by one of California's rolling blackouts. This made things a little less convenient, with people using flashlights to move around at night. Also, we were asked to really limit our use of water, which is somehow tied to electric power. But the staff was great. They ran a generator to keep the infrastructure operating, and told people we didn't have to do any dishes.
Great place!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - wonderful place to stay. fresh ocean breeze and comfortable atmosphere
- Ken (10/5): - Beautiful location. Nice people vibe. Really great value. Wish I could stay with my wife. Very comfy bed despite having to sleep in the same room with 5 other guys.
- Matthew (10/5): Great - Nice, relaxing place
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Ocean location and view is great! Bed was comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff could be a little more forthcoming with information on how things are run. The bathrooms need to be cleaned more often, but the dorms and the communal areas are great!
