- Randall (3/5): Disappointed - Did not even see the breakfast. Put a tv in the rooms and decent sitting chairs in the room. Update the furnishing, there are antique look furniture and then there is junk furniture that is all chipped up.

I specifically picked this hotel for the fireplace in the room. We got to the room, couldn’t figure out how to turn on the fireplace, asked the front desk person how to turn it on and were informed the fireplace did not work in our room. I was more than disappointed since that was the sole reason I booked a room at this hotel. We were not offered a room with a working fireplace. Also restaurant and bar were closed for renovation at time of stay.

- Maureen (10/5): Amazing place in a beautiful town. - Loved the old school feel and charm. The outdoor space is fabulous and the local is wonderful. Wish the room had a tv- I understand why they don’t but we had a long day and wanted to watch some college football.
- Kathleen (4/5): Would Not Stay There Again! - Housekeeping did an excellent job and were very personable. They are not included in the staff review above. They actually were engaged at the level we would have expected of management. They were very helpful and cared about our comfort unlike the site's manager. They were very apologetic of the fact that we had to change rooms twice, unlike management who never apologized. Manager seemed disengaged and mostly remained out of site. Our first room had a broken heater (could not set below 77 degrees). The front desk offered to put us in a suite where a bed was not made up and had a huge stain on the mattress. The entire "suite" was dreary and creepy. Housekeeping told us that we should never have been told we could be in that room because it had not been cleaned. Housekeeping then told us we could stay in another room and although there was no heat or cool air we were able to open the window. The room was very clean and we appreciate their efforts. All this took time out of our limited stay and we were late for our anniversary celebration at a local restaurant. We were told the hotel is closing soon for renovations which are sorely needed. What bothered us the most is that the photos on the web site did not match the hotel's reality. We paid $200 for the room and in no way did we get value for the money. Booking.com, can you reimburse us?
- Denise (4/5): Perfect location, only "ok" stay - Staff was very friendly, although unable to assist with the issues we encountered. When we realized we had to request towel service, apparently there were no towels or wash cloths left - all they could provide were floor mat towels. Seriously? And I would have like to know in advance that the floors are all hardwood...meaning when the guest in the unit above me got up, I would be awakened by the back and forth over my head....even though it was still very dark outside.. No restaurant, no in-room coffee. Go down to the lobby and stand in line with all the other guests at the single cup Keurig ..

- Audrey (4/5): - We stayed 2 years ago and had a great experience. Unfortunately the restaurant is closed. There’s no breakfast offered, and the answer was “we don’t know why.” They’re supposedly getting ready for renovations, but it’s just disappointing that it’s just as expensive to stay with the amenities gone. Room was clean, area was clean and open but ready for renovations. I hope they do renovate and open the restaurant, it was awesome.
- John (10/5): - If you want everything perfect go to super 8 but this place is awesome! Nice clean room, friendly staff, and beautiful property. You’ll get squeaky floors and no tv in your room. But you’ll get something away from the typical. Support local in this great little mountain town and enjoy a night without the tv blaring.

Bed comfortable. The location is very walkable to the downtown area with restaurants, shops and bars.

- Kelly Marie (8/5): Ok, but not as good in the past - We've stayed at the Monte Vista before and loved the old-fashioned charm and little touches like the chocolates in the room. This stay was different. They were supposed to close for renovations earlier this summer, but those have been delayed, so the hotel feels like it's in the process of shutting down. No chocolates this time, hardly any guests. The restaurant is closed. My socks were dirty from walking on the floor of the room. Not sure I would stay here again until they decide whether they're going to remodel or not.

That’s the only reason I stayed there!!! No elevator… and only 1 outlet for charging, oh yeah!!!!! There was a hole in the roof of the closet!!! I was afraid a squirrel might jump out of the closet! They said they were gonna renovate soon but had no answers and no good breakfast!
- James (10/5): - We really enjoyed staying at The Monte Vista during the Sourwood Festival. It was great to walk to town to eat and attend the festival. The hotel is old but very charming. It has a lot of stairs and no TV in some rooms, so be sure to book a room accordingly.

Everything is within walking distance and you can't beat the view of mountains in the background. Their restaurant was closed as they are getting ready to renovate the entire property. Nice little bar with anything you want really. The front and back porches are so nice to sit and enjoy a cool evening. We will for sure be back after the renovations!

Virtually no services available due to restoration going on in the facility. Kitchen was closed down with no food or even coffee available in the morning. Condition of the bedding was unacceptable with the quilt falling apart regarding stitching and seams apart. Containers in the shower were empty. No glasses were available or any other type of common amenities.

So, I was a bit surprised that the room was small, no glasses, of any kind, were available, no t.v., and I had to stand on the commode to turn the broken knob to close the blinds! On the positive side, staff member Jenna was efficient and very pleasant, the location was close to walk into town (which was crucial since the restaurant is closed on property) and it was clean!

The bed was comfortable, the shower had good pressure and the staff was informative and friendly. Small mechanical issues in the room. The sink was leaking from the faucet which was a minor inconvenience. The room did not have a TV but the wifi strength was good to make up for it.

Staff quite invisible except Jenna very friendly and helpful; appreciated historic atmosphere but suggest pictures on walls! Gazebo and patio lovely and restful morning and evening :-) Bath window in 216 needs scrape/paint. Refrig and/or microwave would be appreciated - maybe in closet due to space?

- Ira (6/5): - The property is conveniently located in walking distance to downtown Black Mountain, NC. It's hard to get a good feel of a hotel when looking just at photographs. The room was very small. And I'm not convinced it was a Queen size bed. Although they claim all of their rooms are Queen size, unless you pay extra for the king. The rooms are not well kept Resulting in large cracks and small holes in the ceiling and walls so i cut them some slack due to the recent hurricane flooding in the area, although I'm not sure it affected this hotel. On the plus side, it is a dog friendly hotel, but for the price, I don't think you get your money's worth.

But no in room control of temperature on a hot night, plus no tv, would be a strong negative for many guests. Highly suggest they add those features. But otherwise impeccable.

- Verified traveler (4/5): - Beautiful building and room and very clean but no staff. We knew the restaurant was closed but the bar was supposed to be open in the evening and it never opened. There are no coffee makers in the room and no staff were around in the morning so guests gathered in the lobby waiting for coffee and to be able to check out. We ended up leaving our key on the desk as no one was there by 10am. It could be a beautiful place but it felt like a strange ghost town in both the evening and the morning.

I appreciated keeping the historic aspect alive while having modern amenities. Quiet room, clean and neat as a pin. Fantastic Christmas Day buffet! Loved talking with Sean and Elizabeth- they were so friendly and helpful! Nothing to complain about.

The floors were creaky, the walls were thin, the mattress may have been original and the bed was terribly squeaky. It didn’t feel as clean as it could be (previous guest left popcorn on the floor and hair in the tub drain that greeted us upon arrival). It was charming for some of these same reasons, but I wouldn’t sacrifice another night’s sleep here again.

There os a pretty gas fireplace in the room but the front desk person said it doesn’t work. The front desk guy seemed put out that I checked in at about 9:15, and noted I was the last one in.

The current owner doesn’t care of cleaning, not caring about peace and customers. Even you can see that someone smoking in the room and open the window . Personal on my room was: - the tap is broken - very cold floor - a lot of short black hairs; - dust, that had obviously not been removed for several months Also was vey noise up my room, couldn’t fall asleep till midnight and have been awake during night a several times.
