Guest Reviews
- popovm2018 (10/5): Great stay! Great host! Great agriturismo! - We have booked it through booking, they asked for a prepayment of 30%. We transfered 40%. The location is great, it is in the middle of lemon orchards. They have a great swimming pool, it looks like in Sri Lanka. The breakfast is very good, better then in other italian places. Really great place to spend time. Easy to access all the beaches from the sarroundings. 10-20 minutrs to drive and you have 5/6 beautifull spiaggias to see. Highly recommend to come and stay here.
- tim_gilling (10/5): Excellent value in pretty resort. - The first thing to mention is the friendliness of Marco and his team. Couldn't be more helpful. The gardens and pool are lovely. The palm trees surrounding the pool must be a godsend in the hottest months. Peaceful location surrounded by lemon and olive groves. Ideal for families who want a quiet few days. Accommodation is modest but good value.
- Apostcardfromus (6/5): Family run business on beautiful estate - It's a small family run bed and breakfast that feels secluded and on a beautiful estate that grew oranges. There was also a pool, but during our stay, it was still drained as it was early May.
Our hosts were very welcoming and friendly, and they were very helpful with any questions we had.
Any meals that are prepared, such as the included breakfast, or whether you have dinner in their restaurant have a home-made touch and are a real treat!
While your in Avola, be sure to check out sunrise by Tonnaro di Avola!
- spongybugcar (10/5): Peaceful - Make sure you have your own transport if you book this place - the driveway is a 2 min drive.
The place is peaceful - the pool was being filled when we arrived and it took a day and a half to be filled - we used it but the water was freezing.
The room was clean - although we heard some noises in the night (like mice running on the ceiling) but they couldn't reach us from the roof as they have concrete on the wood so we didn't worry too much about that.
Only down side is that our shower was very very small - I barely could take a shower and my other half had to open the shower doors in order to shower properly.
We enjoyed the rest of our stay - although I wish that their restaurant was open as I would have liked to try it.
This is a small resort apparently run by a family. We had fun as it is not too crowded - we will consider to visit again when we are back in Sicily.
- X703IPbenb (6/5): Good but... - The good :
- Clean rooms
- Family oriented.
- Peaceful and quiet area
- convenient parking.
- potentially beautiful resort
- good value for money
- Room cleaned every morning (except for last 2 days see below)
- Fresh towels every morning (except for last 2 days see below)
The bad :
- Slightly neglected and shabby looking
- Reception was non existing - there were times when we tried to contact the hosts and they were not available...
- No internet throughout the whole week we stayed there and no attempt or interest to remedy this
- Being low season all amenities such as pool, restaurant bbq area were not operational
- According to our hosts, we were not entitled to a breakfast because we paid low season fares (but the lady host offered us coffees, croissants and cakes daily)
- Credit Card was not accepted when we wanted to settle the bill
- During the last two days it felt as if we were on the resort completely on our own. No one tried to clean our room or get us fresh towels.
- For the last night we had to ask for clean towels which the host gave us, however we were reminded that usually fresh towels are only distributed once every three days.
- The room has no tv, telephone, glasses, fridge, or any other amenity. It is best that you get your own phone and internet connection otherwise you will feel stranded
- Bressane (8/5): great relaxing place to stay - Nice little oasis to end touring days of the Baroque towns of SE Sicily.
Adequate facilities with a nice pool.
Welcoming, friendly and pleasant hosts.
Central wifi but not in the rooms. Then again, if you stay here no constant wifi is a bonus.
- michag (8/5): A peaceful place to Rest - Chose this place for a short 2 night break during a cycling holiday. Found the place easily as it is very well sign posted even though it is in a quiet rural area of Avola. It was a good base to explore the surroundings including Cava Grande. Since we were there in low season no breakfast or meals were offered, however, the owners kindly offered to ferry us (on both nights) to their restaurant and back since we had no means of transport other than our bikes, and we were not keen to cycle after sunset. We fell in love with Serafina, their pet donkey, who is the mascott of the place and is very friendly with the guests. Very good value for money. Hope to to back soon.
- Sonya206 (2/5): Doesn't look like pictures -Don't stay here... - We arrived at La Petrara "Resort" which we were able to find very easily, as directions on the roadway are clearly marked, however, at reception, sort of a "room" cluttered with a child's swing, ironing board, toys as well as a Great Dane who slobbers all over my husband's clothes, we met the hosts. Their reception desk is a plastic table littered with papers. We were immediately told that there was no food, and this was one of the reasons we had booked here for their "incredible" Sicilian cuisine which other reviewers raved about.
They did finally agree to make us a croissant and coffee, but no offer of dinner. Pool was closed, grounds were all closed up and we were told to keep our doors closed because of mosquitoes. Olives littering all of the walkways.
Room was clean, but bare bones, no tv, no phone, no glasses for water, and unlike every other B and B, Agriturismo! or manor house we have stayed in no offer of a beverage. Host also said we had to speak quietly because his daughter was sleeping.
I stated that we could not stay here and the host immediately turned defensive and said that we had to pay and cancel through booking. We did... However, we should not have stayed even one night.
also, I was not happy with their cavalier attitude to our Canadian passports, left out on their desk for all to see. I value my passport as my legal identification, it should not be left out in the open for anyone to take.
I read the reviews on both Trip advisor and booking.com and this resort did not live up to expectations at all. I don't understand who could be happy to stay here, definitely not me!!!
- 464tomw (10/5): Perfect summer holiday - We stayed for 10 nights at the end of July.
We loved it! Pure relaxation in the lemon groves.
Room had plenty of space, good air conditioning and a great shower - what more could you want?
We went out most days, plenty to see and do in the area, we found a beautiful beach about 30 minutes away.
The pool was very clean and the breakfast was great, everything one could ask for.
The hosts were a fantastic couple! Very helpful in all aspects with recommendations and any help we required (we managed to lock ourselves in our room but we were quickly set free!)
It is about 5 minutes into Avola centre by car where you have a choice of lovely places to eat. We had dinner, made by the hosts, one night which was very relaxing and beautifully prepared.
We loved seeing the donkey every morning as we left, she was so lovely so do make sure you stop to talk to her!
Generally it was a great holiday destination and I would definitely go back again soon.
- Mars2013 (8/5): Overall a very good value residence - The Petrara Resort is a charming agriturismo resort in Avola. During our stay there, there were no wandering farm animals except for a couple of cats. The pool is really big and kept clean and kids have plenty of room to wander about and play. We had a quadruple room which was quite spacious and very clean with quite comfortable beds. It was cleaned every day during our stay and the beds made accordingly. The parking spaces are numbered matching the room number so each guest has his own parking space, so no matter at what time the return, it is always available. We ate at the resort on our first day and the tourist menu on offer is a good value for money. You must notify the host in advance of your intention to have dinner there in the evening. The hosts are courteous and even if they have a small child, they alternate to accomplish their tasks in the kitchen. They make heavenly peanut and chocolate cookies which are served at breakfast together with watermelon, omelette, cornflakes, yoghurt, jam and nutella, fresh bread and bread rusks and a homemade cake and jam tart. Cappuccino and hot chocolate are available on request. Overall breakfast is a little sparse compared to other places. Orange juice, whilst very good, comes from packets rather than freshly squeezed. No ham or cheese are served, something which Sicily is renowned for. The shower cubicle was quite small compared to the size of the bathroom, but nonetheless the bathroom had all the amenities. Another disadvantage was that the shaver socket was a bit too far from the mirror.
- juanfalcone (8/5): Oase between the lemon trees - We traveled the end of may through Sicily and because of the low season we just passed by without a reservation and became a fair offer for three nights in a 3 persons bungalow and a remote control for the gates. Furnishing, decoration, colors of our room were both tasteful and rural. The quality of the matrasses could be beter, for my wife a little bit to hard and you could feel the spiral a little bit. We solved it with an extra blacket under it. The resort is beautiful situated between fields of lemon trees. Noto and Syracuse nearby. We loved the tranquillity and the simple, tasteful design of the complex, swimming pool. The female owner speaks English well. We dined once in the diningroom, that is very basis with plastic chairs, and sound of the radio from the kitchen in the background. The quality was good, very tasteful, only the wine was not what we expected. We didn’t drink it. I guess it wass self made and tasted a little bit like Vermouth. We should have asked the owner about it. Breakfast with many fresh, sweet stuff, was ok.The staff is very nice and helpfull. The nearby city of Avola is not very special, also the beach. They were renovating the boulevard along the beach. We visited twice a fine excellent restaurant in the neighbourhood ‘Porto Matto’, recommended by the owner of the resort.
- OliverK376 (10/5): Our Oasis in Sicily - We stayed 4 nights at the Petrara Resort and I can just say it is an Oasis. You have everything you need as the rooms are great, a pool and an area which is surrounded by Orange trees...just wonderful. The breakfast was a local italian breakfast and was always enough for us as this is what we have been looking for. Three times we stayed at the Resort for dinner and this was as well just fantastic. Very good food made by the owner. This is definitively a place to relax but as well to visit the cities near by (Noto - 10 minutes; Siracusa - 30 minutes). Next time we are in Sicily we will stay longer! Thanks for everything!!
- RichTea_8 (6/5): A puzzle to find - look out for signs - La Petrara has many virtues, quiet, rural, nice donkey, unique rooms, small dedicated dining. It also has disadvantages, limited facilities, donkey wandering around with flies, restricted and a little expensive dining, basic rooms and furnishing.
The accommodation appears to be converted from other agricultural buildings and I suspect no two rooms are the same. If you go looking for the first you will not be dissapointed. Basic with character rather than bijou. It is not a "resort".
Do prepare a map to find it, the "new" roads have made it a puzzle. Ring the bell at the the gates off the main road on first arrival, we tailgated and didn't notice these and then took 15 minutes trying to get in the accommodation. The owners speak French, English, German (I think) and of course Italian but this is shared between the two of them so English speakers need to find the lady.
- KateE870 (10/5): Beautiful surroundings, interesting rooms - This is a lovely resort, with a small amount of accommodation. Restored outbuildings provided cool, tastefully restored rooms. Very clean and quiet. The Pool was beautiful with a docile little donkey roaming the grounds. The gardens were beautifully kept. The host and hostess had a new baby but were very accommodating and happy to help. Breakfast provided for wide variety of pallets and more than adequate. Dinner could be ordered in the morning and was freshly made in generous proportions to guests requirements. The atmosphere of the resort is quiet and charming.
- eesterix (10/5): Very nice!!! - We had a wonderful time at La Petrara. The owners are a charming couple who is not only very helpful but also very courteous. The resort is beautifully situated, spacious, with a nice pooll, away from the bustle, surrounded by lemon trees. Beautiful. The bungalows are decorated very nicely and are very clean. We would immediately go back!
- Rosebankianz (8/5): Spacious and quiet - A fair sized room, well fitted out, good size bathroom with excellent shower. Helpful staff with English speaking manager. Extensive, well kept grounds with pool, barbeque and friendly pet donkey! No laundry facilities but staff may provide private service. Generous breakfasts; dinner available on request. In rural location, can be difficult to locate without detailed maps, though signs are posted on several main roads – not GPS friendly, so download map in advance. Plenty of secure on-site parking. Staff provided map of Syracusa which is within easy reach by car. A nice change from staying in compact and crowded towns.
- KlaraKlok (4/5): Service??? - After reading revues on Tripadisor we chose this place for a couple of nights in april.
La Petrara was recommended with its excellent service. Probably, the staff had made great efforts in pleasing previous guests, and we found the staff totally exhausted. We did not feel welcome at the place, and the service was limited to nearly nothing. Even when it started raining through the roof, the first reaction from the hostess was that as long as it didn't rain in the bed, it could not matter. (We got another room later the same day). The breakfast was very limited. It is the only place in Italy we have experienced coffee served from a thermos and luke warm milk in a mug... As we left they kindly asked us to leave as soon as possible, but they were not even able to open the electric gate to let us out.
We are sorry to post this revue, because the place itself is very nice, but with the level of service we experienced, we felt it necceseare to give a correction to the other mainly positive revues.
- TUSCANGIRL76 (10/5): Paradise in Sicily - We had the pleasure to stay at the La Petrara Resort. It was breathtaking and peaceful! I was looking for something in Noto, but found the prices and the confusion to be a little too much. I looked at Avola, being only 15 mins away by car & we fell in love with the pictures online of the Resort. When we arrived, we were greeted immediately and the room was wonderful, spacious and clean!!! The staff at the Resort were friendly and of great companionship! They were very helpful in directing us where we could eat for the evening at Noto. In fact, are meal was excellent at Noto!!! I only regret that we didn't stay longer at the Resort!!! Next time that we are in the Noto area, we'll be sure to stay again and hopefully longer! Will post pics soon of the Resort
