Guest Reviews
- Nick (8/5): - Dinner and breakfast very good
- Jim (8/5): -
- Lewis (8/5): - Staff were excellent and friendly. Stayed on 3rd floor but lift only goes to 2nd floor resulting in lugging luggage up a steep stair. No help offered by reception on arrival. Very creaky floors but only to be expected I suppose in such an old building.
- Lars (9/5): -
- James (7/5): Early bar closing,9.30pm, disappointing. - Great location and Saturday evening entertainment was excellent. (Michael Lewis). The bar was closed early by Colin on Saturday at 9.30pm.
There were six of us in the ballroom listening to the act and at least four people in the bar.
Also, we were told by reception on Saturday evening that Sunday breakfast would be 8am till 9am rather than the advertised 8am till 10am.
Not happy with these two issues.
- Jolanta (7/5): -
- Wesley (8/5): -
- Margaret (9/5): - The Staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast buffet was well stocked and plenty variety to suit everyone.
- Robert (8/5): -
- Cassie (9/5): -
- Maureen (8/5): We really enjoyed our stay that is the 4th time we have stayed there and we will be back again. - Breakfast was really good a really good mixed selection of hot food not so much if you preferred a continental breakfast and the fact it was buffet style you could choose what you liked and how much. The hotel itself is in a prime position and is need of a bit of an upgrade it is an old building. When we were there they were in fact refurbishing 6 bathrooms on the floor above us. It was a bit noisy at times but as we were out all day did not really bother us all that much.
- Iain (9/5): -
- lornamae (8/5): - Comfy bed
Good breakfast
Friendly staffv Unfortunately due to ongoung renovation work we were without water on arrival and also in the morning. A minor inconvenience but a wee bit of notice regarding this wouldn't have gone amiss
- Christopher (8/5): Very pleasant hotel. Would be happy to stay again. - Breakfast was fine.
- Lindsey (10/5): Lovely traditional Scottish hotel - Lovely room, nice hot water in the bathroom, comfy bed, helpful staff, excellent meal in the bar, good choice at breakfast, huge car park at the rear. Nice ambience in this old building. Nothing
- Clive (7/5): Comfortable stay but poor food. - It was really comfortable and well maintained The food. The hotel’s main business appears to be catering for coach parties and that was reflected in the food. The dinner menu offered very few options and in my opinion the cooked breakfast was tasteless.
Private guests will be paying a great deal more for their stay and consequently should be offered a different menu to those travelling in coach groups.
- Jana (8/5): It was alright - Nice hotel, lovely stuff and good breakfast but it needs updating. Hard pillows
- Kenny (10/5): -
- Ashley (4/5): Personally would not stay again, - Location was good, first stop on your NC500 journey.
Enough amenities in the local town
Great Indian restaurant in the town, Royal Tandoori highly recommend Very dated in decor, huge cracks in the walls, wallpaper coming off.
Window sills swollen with damp and cracking, mould round the bath and a very limescale covered shower head.
Ripped beside table lamps.
Small kettle with coffee and sugar in the corner, we didn’t use it as the teaspoon were not clean.
Breakfast - food was perfectly fine, good amount of choice.
Odd waiting staff - my partner was referred to as “boss” as the waiter tried to take his plate, that he was still eating from…
Very expensive for what you get.
- sally (8/5): -
- Ann-Katrin (8/5): - The location in the lovely village Kingussie and that you could just slid out the back door and enter the mountin trail!😃
And an extra 👏 for the breakfast, rich and well composed😋
- Laurence (6/5): good location - Staff is very nice and helpful.
Good location.
Spacious rooms.
comfortable beds. The food was not great.
It was a bit dated.
Douche peu pratique
- Milos (7/5): -
- Malcolm (5/5): Disappointed. Will search for an alternative next time - Adequate breakfast, not hugely inspiring Tired and older grand hotel
- David (5/5): -
- Robert (9/5): -
- Paige (7/5): The location is the main good thing with this hotel. - It was in a good location. The hotel in general needed a bit of an upgrade. The floors everywhere creaked terribly, the handle on the shower fell off every time you touched it, the towel rail fell off every time you touched it, there was no shampoo or body wash in the bathroom and a member of housekeeping walked straight into our room.
- Nora (8/5): -
- Morag (10/5): Beauty. - The sheer elegance of the whole place xx N/A
- William (9/5): Grand Stay - Professional staff. Very helpful. Grand old building with history, yet the room is with modern furnishings. No much options for dinner.
- Paul (7/5): - The staff were great and the room comfortable. It seemed a bit in need of a makeover...the room was dusty.
- Kay (9/5): A friendly very convenient place to stay as near the station. Need a taxi you should book in advance - Breakfast was good No lift to third floor
- Florian (9/5): -
- Ronald (7/5): -
- Miranda (8/5): Very good, will be back for sure, but the hotel does need a bit of a tidy up - Very Friendly staff and good food, breakfast was free and good too, hotel was warm and comfortable. Room was very dated, and could do with being re-decorated, Some of the fixtures and parts of the flooring were in poor condition but it was clean.
- Spekmeister (8/5): -
- Alan (4/5): Great staff and a decent breakfast couldn't save a dusty, outdated, noisy, and leaking room. - The staff were all great, friendly and helpful. Rooms are old, out dated. The room was not serviced, Water leaking from above floor in the bathroom, no shampoo in the bathroom, no device charging facilities, thick dust everywhere in the room and bathroom. Room was right by the entrance to the wing, so lots of noise in the passage. Breakfasts, whilst good, plate dirty and buffet area was messy with food spilled everywhere after a large bus tour group came down.
- ping (8/5): -
- Per (8/5): -
- Susan (8/5): Not perfect but good enough to visit again - Very good location with plenty of free parking. Spacious bedroom with plenty of wardrobe space and an updated bathroom. Bar was well-stocked and homely with efficient staff. Breakfast was self-service with a good choice. Squeaky bathroom floor and door. Curtains in bedroom should’ve been lined to keep out the light. Breakfast was from 8 till 9 only even on a weekend which differed to what was in information book in our room.
- Neida (7/5): -
- Elizabeth (8/5): - The breakfast was tasty. The only thing that let it down was that breakfast was between 08.00-09.00, this is contrary to the information in the booklet. Could do with a bit more lighting in the lobby lounge, difficult reading in the dim lighting
- Koen (9/5): Sfeervol schots hotel - Mooi hotel, zeer vriendelijk personeel! Leuke pub en een heerlijk ontbijt
- marielouiser399 (4/5): Such a shame - We were travelling from afar and decided to stop for the night once we’d had enough driving. We found the Duke of Gordon Hotel on Google and the website sounded ideal for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t quite match what was advertised.
Parking was the first challenge, as access to the car park was blocked when we arrived. Inside, we were greeted by a lovely member of staff who explained they were short‑staffed and that dinner service was finishing soon, so we needed to commit to eating straight away. We completely understand staffing pressures, so we dropped our bags and headed straight down.
At the bar, the young lad serving seemed overwhelmed and didn’t acknowledge the queue. A more senior staff member stepped in and took over, but she handled the glasses by the rim, which isn’t great practice. Drinks were reasonably priced, though.
The dining room itself is huge, yet all diners were squeezed into one small area. Every table had bread already placed on it, even when no one had been allocated to sit there. We chose the £27 three‑course menu. Starters were tomato soup and a ham and pea terrine. The soup was bland and lacked seasoning, and the terrine came with two stale crackers. Mains were sausages, which were okay, though the gravy was very watery. Desserts were the biggest disappointment: the lemon meringue was overpowered by raspberries and inedible, and the apple sponge was smothered in jam, lukewarm, and didn’t taste of apple at all.
Heading back to our room, we noticed how unclean the communal areas were — cobwebs on light fittings, dust on surfaces and ledges, and threadbare carpets. We hoped the room would be better. At first glance it looked clean, but again, the higher surfaces were dusty. The TV was positioned so awkwardly that darker scenes were almost impossible to see. On a positive note, the bed was very comfortable, the water was hot, and the building was warm throughout.
The staff truly were the highlight — friendly, polite, and doing their best under pressure. Sadly, that’s the only real strength at the moment. The whole experience felt a bit like Fawlty Towers, which is a shame because the building itself is beautiful and could be wonderful with some updating and a thorough deep clean.
Both of us work in hospitality, so we always try to be fair and understanding, especially knowing how much reviews can impact a business. We don’t enjoy leaving negative feedback, but we also feel it’s important to be honest. With some investment, better cleaning standards, and more support for the team, this hotel could be so much better.
- Ivacardi (10/5): Friendly, welcoming hotel - Just back from stay here with Cairngorm holidays. Nice big spacious hotel. Good choice of food for meals. Lovely friendly staff who will have a laugh with you. The bedroom had everything you would need. The down side is the bedroom is in need of modernisation, especially the bathroom. Apart from that, its a lovely place to stay for a few days whilst touring the Highlands. Thank you Paul and staff
- Claire (10/5): - Jolly staff and a suburb location
- Babsstockport (10/5): First class in every way - We stayed here as part of our Scottish Highlands trip to the Cairngorms.
The hotel is excellent in every respect.
I had a room on the second floor which was lovely with plenty of room and storage facilities.
All the staff at the hotel were extremely pleasant and helpful and the dining room was beautiful. The food was superb with a printed menu every day and three choices of starter and mains and dessert. There was something for everyone and everything was superbly served and presented. The breakfasts were very copious and delicious also.
Absolutely faultless.
There was entertainment in the ballroom every evening and a nice quiet bar to have drinks as well.
The hotel is very well located and the village very pretty.
Thank you to all the hotel staff for making our visit to your hotel so enjoyable.
- Kate (3/5): Find somewhere else? - Not a lot! Kingussie is lovely and staff friendly Outdated. Carpets worn to threads. Creaking stairs. Felt like a hammer house of horror film.
- parnic (8/5): Lovely stay. - Just had a 4 night stay here with Cairngorn Travel. The hotel is in a great position, it was lovely and warm at all times, everywhere was spotlessly clean and all staff were friendly and welcoming especially Laura and Pete. The evening meals were very good, great choices and really enjoyed all of them. Breakfast was buffet style and tho good choice of hot food, would have liked some pastries instead of just toast every morning and maybe more fruit options. The only real downside to our stay was our room which tho very clean was very dated, worn and in need of a total refit especially the bathroom. If the rooms were refurbished this hotel would be top notch.
- Elizabeth (9/5): We have stayed here many times and look forward to our next visit. - The rooms are big. Nothing in particular
- Clifton (10/5): Would definitely recommend - Duvine breakfast and staff were amazing.
- Desmond (7/5): Our Highland getaway - The room was very comfortable. The staff were exceptional, friendly and helpful this made our stay. The quality of the food was poor. We ate out at another hotel in evening and at the local Indian. Therefore, it refers to quality of breakfast as we we were on a bed and breakfast basis. Being a coaching hotel there is a lot of customers to serve therefore, it was buffet service and food was dry at time we had breakfast. The biggest bugbear is individuals on coaching trips will be paying a lot less than us for same service and facilities. This is an honest review and repeating what has been said, the staff, hotel comfortability was fantastic.
- Charles (8/5): - Great breakfast and convievent location
- Culture787894 (10/5): Great location for a function - We had a fantastic time at the Duke of Gordon Hotel for my partners 40th birthday. The team couldn't have been more helpful. We had the lower bar/function space for birthday drinks followed by a private family dinner. It was a great experience and would really recommend for anyone hosting a function in Kingussie. Thank you to Michael and the team.
- M8310TBpauld (10/5): The perfect way to experience the Highlands. - Spent three nights in February at the hotel with my family and had a fabulous time.
A lovely warm welcome, plentiful food, great beer and whisky selection and service to match.
The hotel has a lovely charm throughout and is kept toasty worm so that you can escape the worst of the Highlands winter.
A fantastic area for a holiday if you love outdoors in particular.
- 1234567891t (10/5): Great birthday trip - We had a fabulous time went on the Cairngorms Travel holiday for Burns night. Nine of us all the rooms were spacious, clean and tidy, well maintained. The food was amazing and entertainment every night. Burns night had a piper and address to the haggis which was lovely. We had a fantastic time. The staff were amazing. Couldn’t fault it. Steve our bus driver from Cairngorms Travel was fantastic his jokes made us laugh even though they were terrible 🤣🤣
- 2fbs (6/5): Friendly but tired.. - Had a one night stay while travelling through on a buisiness trip.
Very friendly staff, nice warm and clean room.
The hotel is fairly tired in appearance and needs a face lift in most areas.
Menu was very limited so I used the local coop.
Breakfast was a buffet style, not very warm which spoiled the experience.
A fairly big hotel which is an obvious stop for coach parties and im sure enjoyed by many.
- Vacationer808327 (10/5): Room not great but service amazing - Hotel rooms are a little run down. We had booked a superior double but walked into a twin room. The reception got it changed fast into a double but it had that awful dip in the middle. We had paid little extra for a nicer room but this was only room available. The walls had chipped paint falling off it and the tv is something you'd have it a room 20 years ago. Have to say tho the food was amazing. 3 course Valentine's meal, £69 per couple with a bottle of wine and Keighley who served on us was the happiest lady and made the whole experience fantastic. The 5 stars are for her alone. Keep being your fantastic self ✨️
- Leire (10/5): - Lovely and cozy hotel. It was perfect during our christmas season stay. Stuff was great We requested a double bed and we got two single beds connected by the bedding, trying to make it look as a doble bed.
- Curiosity40461602194 (10/5): Maureen's 70th Celebrations - We had a fantastic trip to Scotland and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We stayed at the Duke of Gordon Hotel in Kingussie, which was lovely and comfortable. The food was excellent with plenty of choice, and every meal was thoroughly enjoyed.
Our driver, Steve, was absolutely brilliant—very informative, friendly, and full of knowledge about the area, which really added to the trip. The excursions were great and well organised, giving us a wonderful taste of Scotland.
There were nine of us on the trip, all girls, celebrating our friend’s 70th birthday, and the hotel made it extra special by playing Happy Birthday on the bagpipes. It was such a memorable and emotional moment that we will never forget.
An amazing trip from start to finish—highly recommended!
- Heather (9/5): -
- joannereynolds877 (10/5): Winter Wonderland - Just returned from Duke of Gordon Hotel
With Cairngorm Travel 18.1 to 22.1.26. Had a fabulous time. Loved the food. Accommodation excellent. Friendly staff.
Enjoyed our trips out especially Dundee
- Mandy (10/5): -
- Alaina (10/5): - The staff was great!
- Anahi (9/5): -
- Noémie (7/5): - Le « Restaurant » de l’hôtel ressemble plutôt à une cantine, à éviter absolument pour le repas du soir, c’est beaucoup trop cher pour ce que c’est !
- CHRIS (7/5): - Good breakfast Decor was tired and needs some maintenance work doing.
- andrew (6/5): Felt like we were treated like coach groups and not private booking. - Breakfast was ok but seemed very coach group orientated. Evening meal was dry, not enough gravy, same food as the coach groups who paid less than half we paid for evening meal.
- Abdul Rehman (2/5): - Nothing Nothing
- Ian (9/5): enjoyed my stay but breakfast could have been better staff were very pleasant and location good. - there was plenty choice for breakfast but some of the cooked breakfast was cold would have preferred a freshly cooked breakfast .
- Murray Graham (6/5): Ok - Location Fixed dinner menu - atrocious.
Pork like leather, lasagne best nothing said.
We ate elsewhere the 2nd night.
- W8734VEstuartp (10/5): Duke of Gordon Hotel - Spent 3nights stay it is a fantastic hotel, superbly run, the manager and his partner worked very hard as well has his staff. We will come back again, tables were set out very nice which complemented the excellent food. It’s was -9 outside but always warm in the hotel.See you all again soon.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Pity you can’t get a latte after7, told by barman to wait until the jugs of coffee are in reception. - It was good.
- Stay08393740510 (10/5): Excellent - First impressions very traditional hotel that sits just nicely in it’s surroundings
Very warm welcome from the manager Michael and all the lovely staff.
My room was warm and very clean with everything I needed a cosy bed and beautiful views, there was a wide variety of food to choose from on the menu which was all delicious. The waiting staff were fab but big shout out to remy who waited on are table, the dinning room was dressed beautifully every evening and buffet for breakfast with lots to choose from also delicious.
The fire in the entrance was roaring my whole stay which was very welcome when you had been out in the snow (big shout out to Peter for his fire lighting skills)
New Year’s Eve was magical
Champagne reception in the ball room then the piper piped us into dinner which was excepcional then followed by a ceilidh band and dancing in the ball room then five to midnight the piper piped all the guests onto the terrace for the wonderful fireworks.
My whole stay was fabulous the management and staff all went out of there way to make this happen
I will be returning
- Tony (4/5): Big let down, the room we was in was in poor order, the floor boards sqeaked for Scotland. - The advertisment was not accurate The whole building is in need of severe overhaul top to bottom, side to side.
- B5850CDanthonyw (8/5): Christmas at the Duke of Gordon Hotel Kingussie. - Christmas was spent at the Duke of Gordon Hotel Kingussie, we travelled as an organised coach party with Cairngorm Travel. We travelled upto Kingussie on Dec 22 and spent five nights half board returning on Dec 27.
This is a comprehensive review detailing our experience.

After a very good welcome with a cosy fire along with a tot of whiskey we quickly checked in and prepared for dinner at 20.00 hrs
Our room was spacious with a recently refurbished bathroom, television and beverage tray.
The bed was most comfortable and a good night's sleep was had after our journey the previous day.
On Tuesday Dec 23rd a Loch Ness cruise had been arranged followed by a stop for lunch and a visit to a retail outlet. We did go on this trip but by all accounts everyone enjoyed the day.
We had a day in Kingussie with a morning coffee at the Sugar Bowl on the High Street followed by a walk and then lunch at the Star Hotel. A very good welcome was experienced at both.
Christmas Eve was spent in the hotel with good entertainment provided by a magician in the afternoon.
Christmas Day carols in the morning followed by a piper leading the way into Christmas Dinner at 14.00 hrs and a finger buffet at 19.00 hrs.
Boxing Day a trip up the Cairngorm mountain along with a ride on the mountain railway to the top station was enjoyed followed a ride through Aviemore and then an early return to the hotel.
Entertainment... Some good entertainment was provided in the evenings.
Meals ... Breakfasts where very good with a good selection of cereals, full
Scottish breakfast, fruit juices and toast.
The Highland Carving Buffet on Christmas Eve was a disaster, the
Carving Buffet did not materialise and many food items ran out.
Many guests were displeased and management could not be found.
The serving staff were left to acknowledge the failings.
All other evening meals were fine with a good choice of menu and I
must mention the different table decorations for the evening meals
that complemented the excellent atmosphere in the restaurant.
Service The service provided by the staff was very good in the restaurant
and bar.
Our journey home began after an early breakfast at 07.00 hrs, bags outside rooms by 06.00hrs for stowing on the coach.

Concusion A good Christmas break with a major hick-up which hotel management failed to acknowledge.
The Duke of Gordon Hotel has immense character which needs some t.l.c. to uplift some standards and is fortunate to have staff that care.
The mini- bus shuttle was very good both ways but with at least a 55 mile journey to pick up your main coach. A more local pick up of the main tour coach being we are along the M1 corridor would make for a better passenger experience.
- B5850CDanthonyw (2/5): Very Poor Experience - Christmas Eve Highland Carving Buffet
A total disaster with food running out and the carvery non-existant. More comprehensice review to follow.
- Ken (8/5): -
- Suzanne (8/5): Beautiful traditional hotel - Lovely traditional hotel, fully decorated for Christmas which was beautiful. Real fire was a lovely touch too. Large bed, older decor but bathroom was new with rain fall shower. Cozy and warm. Friendly, helpful staff
- Guest (8/5): Great location with lovely staff - Friendly staff
Great size room The hotel heating was too hot! Found it very uncomfortable!
- MoSolihull (10/5): Value for money, lovely hotel in a tranquil location. - Went on a five day coach trip with Cairngorm travel who own the Duke of Gordon Hotel in Kingussie.
Lovely tranquil surroundings, small village, fields, deserted road, mountains. Heaven.
Hotel staff superb. Hotel very old fashioned but suits the surroundings. Will definitely be going in 2026.
- Richard (9/5): -
- Maggie (10/5): Stopped for the night in a long journey north and couldn't have picked a better location. It was perfect. - I loved it. Beautiful interior. Room clean and comfortable. Friendly staff.
- sophie (7/5): - L’hôtel et les chambres auraient besoin d’être rénové. L’ensemble était très viellot
- elainewZ669UQ (10/5): Great Hotel. - We stayed here mid October, couldn't have picked a better week for great, warm weather, on arrival reception staff were friendly, cheery and helpful, Our room was on the top floor facing the war memorial, Ruthven Barracks and some of the Cairngorm Mountains, Our room was a bit dated and a bit of miss match furniture but very clean and serviced every day, there was a complimentary tray in the room, shower over the bath, a huge bed which was comfortable and comfortable pillows, there was extra pillows, blankets in the wardrobe if needed, the room was warm, we used the hotel restaurant one night, the evening meal was delicious and breakfast was buffet style, hot and cold selections, cereals, fruit, yogurts and your traditional Scottish fry up, they even had a separate toaster for those who are GF, allergies are accommodated without any grief, all staff were helpful, happy and friendly, we enjoyed our stay so much we stayed an extra night and really didn't want to leave for home, we will definitely stay here again. I must add that due to my own allergies some items are missing from my main meal, I was offered an alternative but I declined.
- Andrea (10/5): Had a very pleasant stay. - Staff were very helpful and friendly and the food was excellent, with a good choice. The room was a good size and the bed was very comfortable. It was also nice and warm. The hotel was in an excellent location near the train station and bus stops. If I am ever in the area again, I will definitely stay here. Nothing, all was good

- Corall Castanys (10/5): - Hotel antic i ben conservat. Sala d'estar espectacular amb llar de foc. Personal acollidor i simpàtic. Habitació gran i agradable. Esmorzar abundant.
- George (10/5): Lovely staff will be back in the future - Fantastic hotel decent breakfast
- Jane (9/5): Overnight stay - Very friendly and helpful staff, lovely food and comfy rooms. The interior of the hotel looked a little tired in places.
- 148brigettec (8/5): Great first coach holiday - We returned from our first ever coach holiday last week. We had a great time and would definitely book with Cairngorm Travel again. Paul our driver was very knowledgeable wearing his kilt as soon as we arrived at the hotel. Our coach party were greeted by welcoming hotel staff and our luggage swiftly taken to our rooms for us all.
When all the rooms have been refurbished the hotel would be 5*. Excellent value , friendly staff with a lovely traditional atmosphere. Beautiful scenery and wonderful walks from the hotel. Great coach holiday !
