Guest Reviews
- Stephen (9/5): Excellent property & host who went out of her way to make our stay very special - The location & setting, the history, the authenticity of the decor Some additional warmth in the dinning room would have been welcome in the mornings
- Ken (10/5): A wonderful little step back in time - The location and history Need a bit more maintenance
- Mark (9/5): Great stay , enjoyed it very much - Breakfast was excellent .
The grounds of the house were super to walk around with a short walk to a secluded beach A little cold at times.
- Colleen P (10/5): - Beautiful living history, warm, wonderful hosts, and a unique experience Nothing
- Jackie (9/5): Ruth and Rob are great hosts and their focus is on the guest/s and meeting expectations, thanks! - Great breakfast menu, options to suit all tastes. Freshly cooked to order and delicious. My room was very comfortable and I appreciated the peaceful and quiet.
- Christine (10/5): Quiet location in beautiful surroundings and friendly attentive hosts. - The location was ideal for the places we visited. Both house and gardens were lovely, finding our way through the garden down to the sea and back was an added delight.
Breakfast was superb with an extensive menu and generous portions. Nothing!
- Toni (8/5): - Lovely original features. Tranquil location. Would have preferred to be easy walking distance if Ventnor as the rest of my group were staying in Ventnor. No phone or internet signal.
- Mclellan (10/5): A very restful place to stay. - Ruth and Robert were fabulous hosts who went above and beyond to make our visit the best it could be. Lisle Combe is a beautiful old country house with tons of Alfred Noyes memorabilia. It was incredible reading a book of Alfred Noyes poems while sitting in his drawing room. The garden was beautiful and led to a sheltered private beach. We picked our breakfast from a varied menu. The food was well prepared and delicious, and served in a beautiful large dining room. Our room, the Boudoir, looked out onto the garden, and was spacious and had a large 3 piece ensuite. It was so quiet at Lisle Combe. We could hear the waves at night. This is NOT the fault of Ruth and Robert, or Lisle Comb. We did not have a car. It was a 25 - 30 minute walk into Ventnor. I would recommend having a car or bike, or enjoy walking quite a hilly and beautiful place..
- lisa (10/5): Ventnor escape - Beautiful historic house set in extensive mature gardens. Comfortable ensuite room. Wonderful breakfast.
- Michael (10/5): Peaceful and quiet. - Beautiful house and gardens. Lovely friendly hosts. Breakfast was superb. Quiet and tranquil. Love the history of this wonderful house.
- Clara (10/5): -
- zola1234 (9/5): - Our room and adjoining bathroom were charmingly furnished and capacious with great views of the grounds and on to the sea. The drawing room with its baby grand piano and family portraits was a soothing evening retreat and a great place to swop stories with fellow guests. The location was ideal for Ventor Gardens and town with its Pirate Festival and Carnival and the breakfast was perfect for lovers of fresh fruit as well as discerning sausage fans. We found our hosts, Ruth and Robert, to be friendly and easygoing, as were their dogs. Thank you for sharing!
- Robert (10/5): - We stayed in Lisle Combe for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hosts were very friendly and the breakfast was excellent.
We sat outside in the evenings relaxing, watching and listening to the birds.
The only slightly negative comment is that the TV in the bedroom could be a little bigger.
- jim (10/5): - Fabulous historic family home bringing the past into the present.
Fabulous swimming cove at the bottom of the garden.
- Lucy (8/5): We had a lovely time at Lisle Combe we were well looked after. - Very interesting old house and charming hosts, the breakfasts were very good and lots of choice. The rooms/bathrooms could do with some updating over bath showers not ideal and very difficult to get the right temperature
- Abigail (9/5): Excellent stay - Excellent breakfast, something to look forward to every morning. The room was lovely and spacious, with a large private bathroom and beautiful garden view. The property felt very private and lovely to explore the gardens, and the cove nearby. A great location, couldn’t have asked for a better base to explore from. Hosts were helpful and kind, and really cared about their guests and home.
- Andrea (7/5): Good -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Historic and cultural in a beautiful setting - Exclusive use of house and gardens.. relaxing and amazing hospitality xx
- Pauline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kim (8/5): Friendly and comfortable with a lovely garden - This is a lovely old manor house full of antiques and interesting art. The grounds and the view are beautiful and the owners are very kind and friendly. There is a wide choice of things for breakfast including good options for vegetarians. The beds were comfortable and the room very spacious. We liked the character of Lisle Combe, but don't come here if you want smart decor and state of the art plumbing. The limited wifi is a bit of a nuisance.
- Julian (9/5): Superb - Oozes charm and character with fabulous furniture and paintings giving a true stately home feel a little run down but that would not put us off staying here again, in fact, we would were we to go to the Isle of Wight again.
- D (9/5): Superb -
- Ajr55 (10/5): Wonderful for a few quiet days away. - Almost like staying in a stately home. Very quiet, lovely extensive grounds to walk in, access to the beach, quiet area out of the business of the town. Comfortable and spacious room, lovely breakfast, friendly family run b&b. Easy Access to all parts of the island. Nothing.
- Rosalind (10/5): Excellent - The property was an amazing old country house. The breakfast was incredible with fantastic choice on offer. The hosts were fantastic and went out of their way to make sure we had great stay!
- Paton (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stella (10/5): Had a great stay at Lisle Combe. Loved all the history and hospitality. Would definitely recommend - Stunning property - absolutely beautiful house full of characters, charm and lots of old books! Lovely hosts who were very helpful and friendly and served the most delicious breakfast. Beautiful gardens which extended down to the sea- great location. The house was cold - but we were warned it was not centrally heated, and there was a plug-in heater in each room, so we were not cold in our bedroom or bathroom.
- Yvonne (10/5): Relaxing, peaceful - An amazing place to stay,it was peaceful and comfortable. There was nothing we didn’t like
- Ian (9/5): Superb - Lovely old family home shared with us., excellent breakfast and lovely hosts. Plumbing was a little bit old fashioned, but only to be expected in a house like this. I'm being picky here because I've got nothing else to say 🤣
- Phil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Annabel (9/5): Wonderful - Totally unique, extraordinary setting and house, like Daphne du Maurier’s Manderley. So atmospheric, marvellous original art and a grand piano. Delicious breakfast and the kindest of hosts. Obviously nothing. Perhaps not your cup of tea if tiptop modern Swiss plumbing and bland corporate decor is your thing.
- Margaret (9/5): Very friendly, peaceful and convenient for the purpose of our visit: an overall positive experience - Excellent breakfast with healthy choices. Fabulously comfortable bed. A really warm welcome from our hosts who were fully attentive to our needs. We felt comfortable to linger in the communal areas and also to sit outside and enjoy the gardens. In total: the perfect ambience for a restful few days. Poor lighting in our bedroom ie. around the tea/coffee making area, which was also rather cramped.
Hot water tap in bedroom washstand was reduced to a trickle and running cold only.
No other complaints of any kind!!
- Susan (8/5): A little bit of the past when life was slower - We had a lovely few days in this historic house.
Nothing was too much for the owners and the room was so comfortable. We loved the artwork on display in all the rooms and also the old period furniture.
It all had a feeling of life some 100 years ago.
The gardens were extensive and so quiet. The slightly wild look added to the atmosphere of exploring a garden from bygone years that had been left to its own devices.
Would we return one day? Of course we would.
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- A (9/5): Beautiful location, delicious breakfasts - Delicious breakfasts and friendly, welcoming hosts
- Karen (9/5): Perfect place to recharge your batteries - Very clean and comfortable. The hosts, Ruth and Robert, were exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble, and they made you feel very welcome. You want peace and tranquility? Lisle Combe has it all!
- Sophie (8/5): Very good -
- Christian (10/5): Peace quiet and relaxation - Stunning location, great breakfast. Completely quiet and great night sky views on clear nights. Sound of the ocean very relaxing It’s a 50/50 between like or not. Our room didn’t receive the WiFi signal. On a negative side without phone signal it could be said to be needed but on the positive aspect it was great to be completely free of technology
- Deirdre (10/5): Exceptional - The beautiful garden, tranquil setting added to an enjoyable stay. Comfortable bed, well supplied toiletries in the bathroom. Wifi and mobile reception being rather intermittent
- Mark (10/5): Excellent relaxed and very peaceful - Robert and Ruth where absolutely amazing there was nothing too much trouble, just lovely people who made are stay extra special the room was lovely and clean and breakfast was great especially my scrambled egg, salmon on a bed of spinach 👍.
Would definitely recommend Maybe a larger tv in the room ( my eyes aren't what they used to be)
- Nick (10/5): Fantastic, will stay there again - Great breakfast, great location & lovely people
- Akashdeep (10/5): - Beautiful and clean property.
- Kevin (9/5): Very enjoyable. - Good hosts, superb breakfast, great building. Nothing
- Sebastian (10/5): An unexpected encounter with a style of hospitality it is increasingly hard to find. - Warm friendly welcome. Comfy and homely
- Teresa (9/5): Beautiful and relaxing stay with really nice and helpful hosts. - The breakfast was excellent. We really appreciated that it was cooked just before serving so that everything was really fresh.
- Lisa (10/5): Amazing little gem of a place with fantastic hosts . - Oldie worldie . Historical house full of interesting photos , documents, books, furniture. Not at all commercialised as the owners are in fact sharing their home with you. Fantastic communication with the owners at all times, they are friendly, efficient and most helpful. They only rent out three rooms , ours was large with a hallway and a large bathroom which had a bath as well as a shower in the bath, nice to have the choice. Plenty of storeage room and fantastic grounds. The food was simply the best we’ve had in the many locations we’ve stayed at , all ingredients are locally sourced and cooked to perfection presented well onto the plates, food intolerances were altered for with no fuss at all. Prices were very good especially as we went for the Isle of Wight festival where generally people are getting ripped off because hotels etc can fill their fancies with a supply and demand attitude. These people are so genuine which we loved. Loved the little touches like the handbook, the mini cafeteria, bone China cups etc in the room . There’s absolutely nothing we didn’t like but this is located in the sticks so a 30 minute walk into Ventnor is the nearest bus stop and it’s very hilly and in parts the road is unlit at night however the house is, but we didn’t find this a problem being two fit people in our 50s that run. We were happy to walk into town to get the bus for the festival at Newport which takes 50 minutes then another 30 minutes from the bus station to the festival approx. People may not enjoy the lack of internet but it didn’t bother us we just checked our phones in the lounge in the mornings.
- Robert (9/5): Great location and very friendly pleasant hosts. - Peaceful location, relaxing and a comfortable B & B. The hosts Ruth and Robert were very friendly and provided a variety of breakfasts which were enjoyable. Nothing to add.
- Andres (9/5): Excellent place to visit Isle of Wight - Absolutely gorgeous place, full of character and history. It felt like having a chance of staying in a National Trust property. The hosts are incredibly friendly and happy to help in any way needed. The breakfast was amazing, really generous. WIFI was spotty and there is little mobile signal around there, but you probably shouldn't worry too much about it in such a wonderful place.
If you prefer a full shower vs. a bath tub you may have to compromise on that.
- Ruth (9/5): lovely and relaxing - super tasty and so very peaceful
- Curly (10/5): Essence of the Island - Just had a great stay at this beautiful mansion which is a big part of the story of the Isle of Wight. It reflects a bygone era and yet with a garden which has a natural feel with bird song and red squirrels it is in keeping with the recognised current need to make a place for nature. Next door is the exceptional Ventnor Botanic Gardens a contrasting formal collection of exotic plants based on Victorian collections. All in a micro climate some 5 degrees higher than North of the island. Our hosts made us feel at home from the start serving the best breakfast. Loved our stay here. Nothing to say here.
- Malcolm (8/5): Very good - Lovely building and lovely people Private bathroom but not en suite and very limited wifi in room but good in public area
- Elizabeth (10/5): Just perfect. - Location was perfect, breakfast was delicious, hosts were fantastic. Really nothing!
- S (10/5): Relaxing stay - A beautiful,old, interesting house with lovely grounds and sea views .
We had a lovely breakfast every morning, and in the evenings sat by the log fire and had a drink.
The friendly owners were around at times and were happy to chat and pass on information about the house and the area.
We totally relaxed , we weren't concerned by the weak phone signal as we were prewarned, and it was nice to get away from everyday life .
The bedroom was generous, and the beds very comfortable. The bathroom was lovely, too, with soft towels and toiletries provided .
We will definitely stay again .
- Maria (9/5): Peaceful getaway - Lovely place and location forities ! Ruth look time away from the bustle of cities ! Ruth and Robert looked after us perfectly !

- Francis (9/5): Superb - The house and gardens are wonderful, and the locally sourced produce for breakfast was commendable. A fridge in the room would have been nice.
- Simon (8/5): We loved it - The house was full of character with a beautiful garden. Breakfasts were excellent.
- Gordon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jane (9/5): Fantastic - Exceptional location by the coastline and very atmospheric and peaceful and histirically interesting property. Ruth was lovely. TV was a little small.
- Janet (9/5): Very pleasant and an interesting old house full of history - We had a very comfortable room, our bathroom wasn’t the best as in no shower but a very clean and roomy bathroom, the breakfast was very good and the proprietor very friendly and welcoming The only thing we didn’t like was the lack of a shower, there was a hand held shower in the bath but no shower curtain which made it hard to use as we didn’t want to get water all over the floor
- Liz (10/5): Enjoyed our stay, met lovely people and hosts were fab. - Gorgeous big house/manor. Breakfast was fab and freshly cooked. Too far from Isle of Wight festival for us. 1 hour on bus from festival then 30 minute walk at end of night.
- Elaine (10/5): confortable, clean and enjoyable. Highly recommend. - quiet, spacious with very interesting past history.
- David (9/5): Ideal for those wanting a quiet cultural break with excellent hosts. - Hosts couldn't have been more helpful. Lovely quiet location overlooking the sea and close to town. Wifi access was limited in some areas but we knew this so not a problem.

Very good location for walking and exploring the local area.

- Hector (7/5): A comfortable stay in a historic house - Lovely breakfast. Cooked and presented for you individually Bathroom ready for up date. Hot water flow a problem.
- Vera (10/5): A pleasant relaxing stay. - The breakfast was very god. Wide choice and well presented. The location was beautiful just a pity it was such a long walk to the nearest bus stop. The daily walk into and out of Ventnor! The proprietors gave us a lift into the town when we left with our suitcase which was beyond the call of duty but much appreciated.
- Joe (10/5): Peaceful and relaxing stay - Fabulous large house and grounds. Amazing gardens to explore, backs onto field and a lovely cove and beach. Warm and hospitable family hosts.
Plenty of parking off road. Great breakfasts. Highly recommend! Nothing

- Susan (9/5): We had a very enjoyable stay and would return in the future. - The location, property and history was amazing, the hosts tried really hard to make us welcome and comfortable which we greatly appreciated. The choice and quality of the breakfasts were great. Great coastal walks and places to eat. The internet was inconveniently only available in the main public area.
- Sarah (9/5): Superb -
- Dr (10/5): Exceptional - It's a beautiful property and the owners are lovely and made us feel very welcome

- Anna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Piotr (10/5): Great weekend in a beautiful old house - Wonderful house with lots of history. The owners are incredibly helpful and determined to make sure that your stay is perfect. This is a must for people with interest in history and literature. Wi-Fi is only available in the communal areas.
- Grace (10/5): Outstanding experience - Location, garden, view all excellent. The staff were wonderful so friendly and helpful.
I'm so going to miss breakfast tomorrow. Wi-Fi wasn't great in the bedroom but honestly I didn't care. They told you where it was good and that's where I used it.
- Stephanie (8/5): Very good -
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely location, good hospitality and good breakfasts. Would recommend staying at Lisle Combe.
- John (8/5): Very good - Setting
- Paul (10/5): Superb - A cosy, comfortable home in an idyllic setting. A place full of history, with friendly and helpful hosts. A very peaceful location. N/a
- Trevor (10/5): Excellent in every respect. - Everything was to a very high degree of excellence.
The breakfast was again without fault.
The location could not be bettered. Some improvement with the shower would be an advantage.
- Vaughan (10/5): A wonderfully peaceful getaways - A wonderful old house in beautiful peaceful setting , a perfect for a relaxing break. The breakfast is outstanding, good quality ingredients cooked perfectly. The owners are friendly and helpful . A good place to visit. We have no complaints
- Edward (10/5): I'm so pleased I found this place. - Breakfast very nice with plenty of choice. You could choose from the menu the night before. Fruit and Full English Breakfast was very nice. The location of the house is very secluded and spacious with a feel of freedom. Nice quick walk to the beach through a few trees in the garden and then a short field and steps down. Beach was quiet and very nice for a quick swim. House exceeded expectations and was very spacious, historic and antique. Coastal path very close (passed by on way to beach), meaning you can go for a long (or short) walk in either direction with no driving to a location first. Antique nature of house is very nice, but obviously that comes with minor downsides - personally, the lack of internet in places was a positive and I found the old plumbing absolutely no serious problem as suggested by other reviews. At times it was slightly hot in the bedroom with 2 of 4 windows not opening due to antique nature of house, but nothing too bad. This reflects the micro-climate of the area which is warmer and more humid by the sea. Departure is by 10:30 on most days which is fine, but 10 on day of departure which can be quite a rush. Overall nothing really significant to dislike.
- Pauline (10/5): Exceptional - Ruth was very welcoming and explained everything we needed to know. The breakfast was excellent and the room very comfortable with a nice garden view. Would definitely go back.
- Michelle (9/5): Superb -
- Angela (10/5): lovely hospitality. fantastic location. beautiful house and gardens. - location by the coastal path and little cove at the bottom of the garden nothing really. for me the bed was a bit soft but then that’s just me.
- Iula (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful home and excellent b&b hospitality
- Karen (8/5): Very good -
- andrew (8/5): - A character property in a lovely setting with grounds extending to the coastal path. The owners were friendly and helpful and served an excellent breakfast. Be aware that it's a drive to the nearest pub or restaurant for your evening meal.
- Helen (6/5): Lovely and peaceful - Lovely and quiet, but we found room old and un inviting lack of space
- John (10/5): A Bit of Old Fashioned Loveliness. - A bit of old fashioned loveliness on the nicer side of the island! Lovely room, quality breakfast and excellent hosts.
