Guest Reviews
- Gray (7/5): Good location. - Great location close to Durham. There was a wedding celebration on at the time and there was no coordination with the guests wanting to use the restaurant. We were told food would be available with no mention of the wedding. In the evening we asked if it was still ok to eat as the event was on, and so we went into the bar before being directed to the restaurant area which I hadn't noticed. The event could've been separated better with the restaurant area blocked off for the other guests. The music for the wedding was so loud we could hear it in our room.
- Angela (8/5): Very convenient with the car right outside the room. Good stay. - The room was clean and although the radiator would not work, a member of staff came and fixed it straight away. The bed was comfortable and the shower worked well. Breakfast was cereal and cooked options The Wifi was a bit variable and at times seemed to fade.
- Eunice (7/5): - Good parking comfortable bed and pillows. The room had a strange smell , a bit like a wet dog, even leaving the window open didn’t help.
- MICK (10/5): - breakfast was great.staff friendly . room clean
- Peter (8/5): -
- Gordon (8/5): -
- Susan (9/5): What is there NOT to like? - General"feel" of the place is spot-on. N/A
- John (10/5): - Very welcoming, friendly staff, good location, great food No issues. Everything was very good
- Wienecke (9/5): - Gute Erreichbarkeit. Parken direkt vorm Zimmer.
- Elliot (7/5): Overall really good stay, comfortable and staff lovely. Great location, just could have done with another quick clean an - Fantastic location, just 10 minutes from Durham and close by to supermarkets etc. lovely views from the window out into the countryside, comfy bed Could have done with another quick clean, hairs in the shower curtain and some small stains on the duvet. Nothing major just could have done with a once over, was a wedding on the night so was loud but this can’t be helped and was completely understandable, however could have been given a heads up about this when booking?
- jim (9/5): Another excellent stay - I have been staying regularly here for months now and wouldn't stay anywhere else when visiting my home town. Excellent rooms, excellent service from all staff members, and excellent food in the restaurant. Nothing
- Clare (5/5): Glad it was just 1 night - It is really well placed for Durham Cleaning was not up to standard
- Guest (6/5): -
- abbott (8/5): - Great stay

- danglymaggot (6/5): - Room was comfortable and clean The breakfast was not up to the standard I would expect
- Lesley (7/5): - Great location with plenty parking. The room was nice & clean. Good wifi!!
Excellent food in the restaurant, had an evening meal with family who stay locally and we all enjoyed what we had. Friendly staff at reception and in the bar/restaurant too. Good value for money. Was a bit noisy with traffic passing however I’d bring earplugs if I stayed again (which I would be happy to do)
- Stuart (6/5): OK, dog friendly accomodation. - We had stayed here several years ago, before the current ownership. The location is convenient for where we wanted to go and there are lovely walks on the doorstep. Dog friendly and good parking. We particularly like the ground floor motel style rooms which are very convenient with dogs. Clean and comfy with good bed, large TV and a good shower. Staff are very friendly and the restaurant food was good and reasonable value, although the portion size of the sea bass was very small. The rooms are a bit tired and tatty and could do with refurbishment, but everything worked ok. The coffee machine in the bar was not working on the Sunday night. The supplement for dogs - £7.50 per dog per night - is a bit expensive.
- jim (10/5): A great place to stay in Co Durham. - I always stay here when visiting Co Durham and it always provides an excellent stay. The staff are friendly, professional and very helpful in accommodating my requests. The rooms are spotlessly clean and the restaurant serves good food with a wide range of options, including the breakfast menu. I highly recommend this hotel. Nothing
- Summers (8/5): - Friendly staff Uncomfortable beds
- Andrea (1/5): Ok , lovely bar staff very friendly - The hotel room was ok, was very cold even though the radiator was on. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting the toilet still had stains around the bowl. We found 4 pubic hairs in the bath & around the toilet seat The cleanliness of the bathroom and even though we complained and showed the photos to the reception “reception manager” at no point was any apology given she just said “ill get back to you” ….. still waiting! Spoke & emailed the hotel manager still waiting for a response however i am unsure why when the photographic evidence has been given.
- Evans (10/5): Staff excellent friendly place - Location was excellent so close to everything plenty of room and easy to find on arrival Liked everything
- Bradfield (8/5): -
- Emma (10/5): - Staff were friendly. Nothing was too much to ask for. Small rooms.
- Malcolm (3/5): Very disappointing stay - Location was near to where I was visiting. Very tired room, bed needed new mattress and bathroom fan was very loud. Carpet was worn.
Pizza in the bar area was inedible.
- Jacqueline (7/5): -
- Barry (7/5): - We stayed in room 29 the room itself was acceptable and clean with all the facilities, charging ports and tea/coffee and biscuits which for the price of the room was a nice touch. The bed was comfy. We stayed for food and the staff where polite and the food was lovely, and could tell the quality of the ingredients. The reason I have marked the room down was, yes the bathroom was very dated BUT it was dirty especially around the toilet base.
- Andrew (10/5): - There was a wedding on when we booked, so we were unsure how welcome we would be. We needn't have worried all the staff were incredibly welcoming and the food was lovely. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was clean and spacious and beds were very comfortable. I would certainly stay here again and recommend to others!! N/A
- Gemma (10/5): -
- Anna (9/5): Perfect location - Perfect location to pick up my daughter from university; dog friendly rooms and lovely walks from the property. Very friendly staff. Nothing
- Steven (10/5): -
- P7143GIhelend (2/5): not good at all - we went for a Mother’s Day Sunday lunch arrived on time. Saturn ordered our meals. All the meals came out. There was five of us altogether three ofthe meals come out absolutely freezing cold. The other two were not too bad and my daughter and son ate their meal we waited 20 minutes our mail to come back out had to ask numerous times where the meals were. They weren’t much warm when they come out then all the vegetableswere called the gravy was called and my son and daughter had eaten edge and finish them. I went up to complain to the manager she came back and said we will give 50% of your meal. and also send you a voucher to come and eat again I came home on the night and sat and thought about it and absolutely thought it was discussing then received an email to offer 30% off next time we ate this was Mothers Daylunch and we were all supposed to eat together
- Phil (10/5): 1st class and the dog looking forward to coming back - The fact the dog was been to feel more than welcome complementary treats and bowl of water without having to ask all staff were excellent with the dog and the food was excellent value for money I we booked this hotel because it was dog friendly and we weren’t disappointed as it was 1st class for been dog friendly would highly recommend and we will certainly book again Can not think of anything negative to put as we were over the moon with our stay and we would booked again as it was very welcoming
- Stevens (6/5): - Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. Water wasn't hot enough on first morning - when mentioned it was fixed for second morning.
- Emma (6/5): Honest Lawyer was a good value for money one night stay - Location was perfect from are family living near by
Accommodated 7 adults and 2 children at short notice for food
Very good value for money Sorry to say but it’s definitely looking a little tired in the rooms
A few cobwebs
- Liz (8/5): -
- kjcacia (10/5): Great find, location perfect. - After spending the weekend at this hotel again, cant fault it, staff are incredible, professional, friendly, from The management , bar staff to the lovely ladies taking care of the rooms ..food was well presented , and delious, sunday luch amazing, Breakfast, cooked to perfection..
Rooms have all you need, are clean, and smell fresh.. added bonus the view from our window was over looking the fields where we spotted deer grazing in the mornings.
- Leslie Graham (9/5): - New and clean accommodation. Good location Limited dinner menu
- Ackroyd (10/5): -
- Leanne (6/5): Was fine for one night. - Location was good for us. Staff friendly and felt clean. Excellent parking right outside room. Was a little cold even with the heating on constantly. Floors felt tacky to walk on without shoes, bathroom a bit mouldy. Wi-Fi wasn’t stable which was frustrating.
- David Equality (8/5): Friendly, comfortable and recommended - Stayed here many times. It’s a great almost halfway point on our journey to and from Scotland.
Rooms are always comfortable, warm and cosy.
Staff friendly and helpful. Food choice for vegetarians is limited. There used to be a better selection but our last few stays this has changed.
- Angela Stirling (10/5): -
- Mike (4/5): Served a purpose as visiting due to family circumstaces but has definetly gone downhill - We had a meal in the bar which was poor, poorly preaented, chips looked as if warmed up in microwave from previous day
When bar staff came to clear table our plates were by no means clear, she didnt ask if everything had been ok and we had to say to her that quality was poor to which she said “right” Food and bar staff being made aware they working in “hospitality” and behaving as such
- Sarah (8/5): Convenient to visit family. Friendly staff - Staff were friendly A little tired
- Rowan (8/5): -
- berrington (6/5): -
- Stephen (10/5): -
- joanwW2198OQ (10/5): Perfect place to stop for either a meal or stopover. - The Honest Lawyer is situated just back from a busy main road and you don't hear the traffic. There is a calm peaceful atmosphere when you enter and the rooms are spotlessly clean even though there are some improvements going on. We had our wedding reception there and the room was beautifully dressed for the occasion. Staff are friendly and efficient and the prices are perfectly reasonable. We have eaten a few meals there as well as our wedding buffet and everything was properly cooked and presented. We would highly recommend this hotel and Give it 10 out 10
- Roger (5/5): - Location. Sunday lunch good Dirty grout in tiles in bathroom. cracked wash basin
- Christopher (9/5): -
- hutchinsonsusan2 (4/5): Not good! - Called in for lunch recently. Not many cars in the car park which was a red flag immediately! There were many work vans but didn't think anything of it until we walked through the door. The hotel was clearly having some work done in the reception and throughout the bar / restaurant. We walked to the bar and there was an overpowering smell of fish, to the extent that we looked at the menu, saw the prices, noted the state of the bar / restaurant area lacking any kind of organisation or atmosphere and decided not to eat there.
If a restaurant is having works completed, surely the area should be closed off as it isn't conducive for enhancing the atmosphere! Additionally the smell! I am aware that it is a restaurant but surely the smell of fish should not protrude thoughout, unless it is a fish reatuarant which it isn't!
Sorry, this could be a lovely place to eat and is local to us. I doubt we will return anytime soon!
- Jane (10/5): Helpful friendly staff and excellent accommodation. - Convenient location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Comfortable bed and room was very clean. Staff made sure facilities always replaced replenished. Have always had a great stay at the venue. Nothing negative to report
- sara (10/5): - Nice place to stay
- Tracey (3/5): - I booked two rooms one for two adults and one child and second room for one adult and we were given two double rooms with double beds only and no taxi service available by the hotel they gave us a list of phone numbers to ring ourselves and could not get a taxi had to ring a friend that lives there to order us one that took one hour to arrive and then breakfast was 12.50 sterling each and no discount for a child
- Ackroyd (10/5): -
- james (4/5): -
- Julie (5/5): -
- Kelly (6/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): Friendly staff, clean room - Clean and tidy
- Karen (10/5): Highly recommended. - Great hotel. Friendly helpful staff.
- Mr P. (6/5): Satisfactory. - The Honest Lawyer Hotel was more of a motel with a restaurant than the typical hotel one would expect. No complaints. Easy excess from the A1 motorway. Lots of parking space, but parking lot is in need of tarmac resurfacing. The exterior of the three buildings on the premises are in need of rennovation - a fresh coat of paint and plasterwork in places would be appropriate. One could easily trip on the lower raised door frame either when entering or exiting the room if not noticed . My room had no heating. I can only imagine what the interior of the room would be like during the cold winter months.
- Jamie (7/5): - Friending staff, good value for money, food was good Bed was too small
- Tate (10/5): -
- Elizabeth (6/5): It suited our needs for an overnight stay. - It was good to get car right to the door of bedroom. Also bed was comfy and clean. Tired and dull decor.
- Nancie (10/5): Lovely stay staff friendly and helpful - Clean tidy comfortable and airy Bathroom could of done with updating but still clean and tidy
- Natasha (10/5): - Absolutely loved my stay here will definitely be back
- NICOLA (8/5): A very pleasant and comfortable stay made better by all the staff and the food. - The beds were extremely comfortable and the room itself was a generous size for wheelchair users. The tv great size and easy to use, furniture is easy to move for your comfort and the bathroom/ shower was again a great size for disabled guests. Dinner was extremely good the atmosphere was friendly and the food was wonderful. The height of our stay was the staff, from the front desk, to the wait and bar staff all of them went out of their way to help with all the requests and made us feel extremely welcome. They are the reason that you should visit this hotel. The decor feels a bit tired and could do with a careful eye over everywhere to recognise the finishing touches needed to spruce the room and surrounding area. I loved the touch of parking the car outside the room but to get from the car to the disabled room my wheelchair had to over a trough of pebbles which it did but I would have thought that as a ramp was provided they would have looked at that access and seen it may be a problem and just concreted that bit over.
- Karen (10/5): Excellent, friendly hotel. Great value for money, lovely staff. - Superb customer service, friendly, professional, nothing too much trouble. Highly recommended.
- David (10/5): The honest lawyer was excellent and would recommend it to anyone - The honest lawyer was an excellent hotel with excellent Staff and facilities and we had an excellent time. Couldn't be any better
- Alison (6/5): Good for one night - Breakfast was very good Room could do with a deep clean and revamped
- James (8/5): - Location and parking Under refurbishment but understand
- Frank& Ann (9/5): would defently stay again maybe upgrading - Clean rooms, excellent Wi-Fi, great shower. The Bar area was warm and inviting, with friendly staff and good food. Although I had to wait quite a while that evening, the apology might have been sweetened with a supplement drink. Could hear the people next door very clearly.
- Claire (8/5): -
- Chunkyflower (8/5): - Location Nothing

- 52stella (8/5): Good value hotel. - The hotel gives easy access to Durham city, it is on a main road but the rooms at the back do not suffer from road noise. Our room was clean and comfortable and we had an excess of coat hangers (more than I can ever find in my own wardrobe). There was plenty of hot water and the shower was easy to use; you did not need a degree in plumbing engineering to understand the controls. We had breakfast and an evening meal, all of the food was good; the evening menu had a lot of choice, including Sea Bass and an excellent fish pie. Our only complaint would be that the bar/restaurant was a little cold and would benefit from more heating, however we were staying during an exceptionally cold spell.
- Stella (8/5): Well priced, comfortable hotel in convenient location. - Comfortable room, value for money. Easy access to hotel. Free parking and close to Durham city. Food good. Bar / lounge areas cold.
- Nicole (2/5): Cold! The whole place is not fit to open as it's so cold. And its looking very tired and outdated. - All the meals were good and the staff are excellent, Zoe went the extra mile however I froze the whole time I stayed here!
My room was cold and staff did provide an additional heater but the restaurant was freezing. we sat in our coats, hats and scarves to eat all our meals, it was ridiculously cold. the place is looking very tired and dated and obviously the heating needs to be fixed or replaced. I think expecting the staff, let alone diners to eat in their restaurant was unnacceptable.
- Carmien (8/5): - Location was perfect.
Bed was good and room was clean Bathroom needs updating. Shower curtain keeps getting in the way of the shower
- Claire (7/5): - Dog friendly, comfy beds, location The bathroom
- Jonathan (9/5): Brilliant staff and location - Great location and price. Staff are excellent, loads of parking Turn the heating on when you first get to the room so it heats up.
- Christina (7/5): A bit disappointed - The staff are excellent, very friendly, a warm welcome and great service. Location is great, can park outside your room, and the fact we can take the dog with us is an added bonus. The breakfast wss good. Have stayed before, but quite a while ago. The room looked very tired and in need of some attention. For example, in the bathroom, the cold tap on the sink was very hard to turn off completely and the whole tap unit moved. Someone had tried to seal it in but it had come away and just looked a bit of a mess. The switch and toilet roll holder were rusty, they could easily be replaced and it would make the room look more cared for.
The bed was extremely uncomfortable, as were the pillows, which doesn't make for a good night's sleep. The duvet barely covered the bed, and the cover was showing signs of wear with a small hole. One of the hand towels also had a hole in it; still usable but . . The small things can make a big difference to the overall feel of the room.
We had a meal on the evening of our arrival: we were disappointed with choices available. Fish and chips were good, but the beef bouginion was not the best, with the meat quite tough and the gravy looked a bit congealed, it was also very salty. However, the hotel did have a big wedding at the hotel, which probably didn't help. Overall, was a bit disappointed.
- lcthompson1979 (4/5): Has potential, but untapped - I really, really want to like this place and it has a massive amount of potential, however it is just not good enough to warrant repeat visits. Visited on Christmas Eve and it was pretty much desolate, save for another family. Despite this, the drinks service was painfully slow and the whole place didn't have much of an atmosphere. Really do hope that things improve as I live a couple of minutes away and would really like to visit more often.
- Anthony (10/5): -
- Alison (9/5): Value for money - The room was relaxing and clean Too hot and road noise was bad as I has window open
- 621gp (10/5): LOVELY HOTEL - We stayed here in August this year as part of a Breaks2Go tour group and enjoyed our visit so much we returned again as part of a B2G group this month. Once again a warm welcome at reception from Allan, very organised with our keys and information and again we had a twin bedded room in the motel which I cannot fault, lovely and warm on our arrival and everything we needed provided. Our 3 course dinner was pre-planned and was lovely, this was followed by the entertainment, Benjamin who was actually the singer the last time round. We had dinner in the quieter area of the hotel and it was just our tour party there so it was a nice cosy atmosphere, Breakfast was as good as dinner and plentiful. The hotel has a nice friendly vibe to it but I have to commend ALL the staff there who are fantastic. Bar staff and waiting staff are a credit to the hotel with their warm welcome, smiles and all round willing to serve, nothing is too much trouble. Well done team!! Overall I would recommend this hotel whether it be for a drink or evening meal or with a tour party and we will certainly return in the future.
- Summerson (8/5): Not to fear from the centre and somewhere to put your head down - Clean place to stay for a night in Durham
- CWalton777 (4/5): Steep drop off in quality - Had our team Xmas lunch there in 17 December. Had heard bad things from a friend who visited a couple of days before and demanded a full refund for inedible food - whilst ours wasn't quite that bad it wasn't great, in fact I would struggle to call it average. For over £30 a head you expect something better than lackluster turkey, zero Yorkshire puddings and bog standard veg. Not sure what's happening here - used to be a dependable place for a business lunch but can't justify going back on the strength of this.
- Michaela (1/5): -
- grantyhardcore (10/5): Lovely atmosphere - Booked The Honest Lawyer for an after funeral meeting place. The food they did was amazing and the staff very attentive but not pushy. They provided a nice relaxing atmosphere were we could sit and remember my mother.
A big thank you to all the staff again The Honest Lawyer.
- Colin (8/5): -
- Liz (10/5): I look forward to staying here each time - The staff are friendly and professional.
- lorraine (10/5): -
- Deighton (9/5): -
- JOANNE (8/5): Christmas market stay - Breakfast and evening meal both lovey.
Bar well equipped with different drinks
Rooms warm
10 minutes from Durham in taxi £10 Noisy road
- U2030QOjessicab (6/5): Wouldn’t go back - We went for Sunday lunch. The food quality has gone downhill. The staff were not very professional, they were all stood at the bar area talking. When asked for a straw for my drink, they didn’t bring one over, I had to get it myself after seeing them talking at the bar. Once it hit 2pm, there was some other staff come in which were a lot more helpful. But, the man on reception was lovely.
- Carol (9/5): - Friendly and clean, great breakfast.
