Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (10/5): - If you love historic building you will love Stannum. Staff were very friendly and welcoming.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Have wanted to stay here many years, its an experience and living history.
- Dang (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Lovely historic rooms, very comfortable with lots of character. Loved it so much we are going back again very soon.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was a beautiful building, well appointed with period features and furniture, enormous sized rooms.
- narelle (10/5): - Stannum House has a lot of history tied in to the area so very interesting
- Tower (8/5): - Lovely character building - 186 yo period guest house. Restaurant closed due to COVID restrictions (understandable). Hosts are friendly and helpful.
- Anthony (10/5): Exciting Historic House - Amazing experience in beautiful historic house.
- Hans (10/5): - The house was well restored and it was a pleasure to stay in one of the beautifully decorated rooms. A great experience for lovers of old mansions.
- DJB (10/5): - Beautiful old residence constructed in 1868 but well preserved, very historic and comfortable with beautiful panoramic views of Tenterfield. The restaurant wasn't open when we were there due to COVID but it looked fantastic a reviews from previous visitors were good. Would stay again.
- Michael (10/5): Fascinating Old House - Stannun House is an amazing building which its builder thought might have become a centre of Australian Government when Tenterfield was proposed as a potential site for the national capital. Well restored with beautiful furniture and more work in progress. Large room with a dedicated bathroom a few metres away (there are some en suite rooms). The restaurant is shut for COVID but breakfast is served. On the edge of town but only a few minutes walk. It is on the main road so some noise from trucks but this mostly stops at night. A most unusal place and exceptional value, completely different fom the a normal motel, friendly staff
- Melissa (10/5): - History, incredible antiques & paintings throughout the manor.
- Jude (10/5): - Stannum House is absolutely amazing. The rooms are large and comfortable. Due to covid the buffet breakfast is not available however there is still ample to choose from including cereal, a variety of breads for toast and croissants. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate is available at all times. I stayed in the Napoleon room which has its own private balcony. The Reid room is the other room With its own balcony. The Napoleon room has its own private bathroom, however it is located outside the room a few metres away. This didn't worry me at all. We were lucky to have a tour of the other areas of the house and informed all about its history.. I would definitely stay here again and can recommend any of the rooms , however there is only a private balcony for the Napoleon and the Reid rooms. Do not expect to be allowed in before 2pm
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff at Stannum House are excellent. Our room was amazing- spacious, clean beds, water and snacks supplied. Continental breakfast was yummy. Bathrooms are in need of some work but that didn’t bother us.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful old world mansion and furnishings with amazing high ceilings
- Deborah Lee (10/5): - This place is great. The room I had was the Napolean, own bathroom admittedly not in the room but that wasn't a bother to me. Communal kitchen/ lounge area was good, great selection of coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Heaps of plates, cups, glasses and cutlery as well as a microwave and toaster. Breakfast in the dining room was continental due to COVID but was adequate. Manager was helpful and had lots of historical information. Will stay again.
- Deb (8/5): - Staff very friendly and helpful.
It’s a bit like Hotel Marigold, bit run down with heaps of potential.
Beds were terrible very lumpy and springy.
Deal stayed full breakfast however only had toast and cereal to offer.
Very noisy road traffic from trucks passing .
- Marlene (10/5): Lovely stay in Tenterfield - Beautifully restored Federation home with lovely period pieces. Friendly, helpful and attentive staff. Very pleasant two night stay in Tenterfield. Would definitely stay there again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We stayed in the Reid Room which was so beautiful! The only thing that we found a little disappointing was that we had to leave our room to use our private bathroom.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - love the old time feel to the place. no water in room is a pain in middle of the night.
- Richard (10/5): - It was nice to step back in time and sleep in a room of that period. Julius Caesar Room was huge. bed was comfortable. Very enjoyable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - liked the old world charm, super huge rooms, private balcony.
- Jodie (8/5): - Beautiful building and really great friendly service, excellent value for money! Only criticisms are bed was a bit hard and walking through the common area to get to bathroom was awkward when other people were sitting there. But overall I loved it and would visit again and happy to recommend
- Melissa (10/5): - History of the property and general ambience very knowledge base staff a very beautiful building. We will definitely return
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great area and house - very friendly staff all round.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - There was unfortunately a massive hail storm the night previously. The place should’ve shut down, no food available, sodden wet carpets, half electricity didn’t work live light switches, lights went in and off during night. Obviously they couldn’t control the weather, place was not safe to stay in.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Unique experience in a beautiful old biulding . Breakfadt a little overcooked but a wide variety of choices . Staff were very friendly it was value for the price and I will stay again .
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great historic old building, restaurant was disappointing this time.
- Michael (10/5): Tenterfield ~ an awesome experience - A wonderful experience, we will be returning. We regularly travel between the West slopes of the Snowy mountains and Bribie island in Qld, the opportunity to overnight in Tenterfield was very rewarding TY .
- lori (8/5): Historic homestead - It was a pleasure staying in this historic homestead.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It was a very interesting place to stay. The setting was very eclectic, with lots of colours and different styles of decor.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great work to restore Mansion. But when the 4 poster bed squeaks badly thats a romance killer. Minor things that make the difference between "that was a great stay will do that again" & "probably not again and wouldnt recommend" Minor things that top notch facilities get right, and really with such an impressive Mansion why not get it right - get more visitors staying etc etc.
Id love to see a historic hotel like this fully occupied and doing well.
- Deb (8/5): Okay - The curtains have fallen into holes and there are no drapes to enable sleep in. The bed needed an extra blanket as it didn’t have one. I had to make it with the blanket in the cupboard . The room smelt dusty and the dining room was very dusty. The shower was not very clean
- Jean-Blair (10/5): - overall great stay in a lovely old building! attention to detail is great and so cheap too
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Amazing place with a huge history and a great place to stay. It was designed and built as a residence for the leader of Australia. There is a wonderful display of history throughout yet includes so many creature comforts. Staff are top rate with friendly welcome and always willing to help with any questions or concerns. They have included some interesting Sri Lankan foods to the breakfast, lunch and dinner. So a wonderful place to stay and explore the area plus some cultural insights as added bonus. Location near town was marvelous so we could walk to the shops for coffee, cakes, drinks and the historical places that are very much worth visiting.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Unique property with spacious room, friendly staff, parking available and reasonably close to the centre of the town. However, this property requires significant upgrading to increase guest comfort, when we were checking in it was extremely cold with no heating evident. More bedding would have been nice. The bathroom had not been thoroughly cleaned in some time with grime on tap handles, a mouldy shower cubicle and most alarmingly a dirty toilet bowl, the curtain over the toilet was only hanging on by a few hooks. Breakfast was adequate, if not a little dry.
- Meg (8/5): - This historic house has been restored beautifully and has so many interesting things to see. The spiral staircase leads from the second level to the third then up ladder like steps to the roof top and tower from where there are fabulous views of the town and surrounding area. Full buffet breakfast inm was a welcome inclusion in the tariff
- David (8/5): Happy with stay - Good experience. The property is in need of a facelift. We were upgraded to an en-suite room without requesting it.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The grounds and gardens were unkept and overgrown.
The bed was lumpy and extremely uncomfortable. The room dimly lit with poor lighting which made reading at night very difficult.
The buffet breakfast was inedible with canned mushrooms in oil, bacon swimming in a oil bath and rubbery poached eggs on offer.
Overall a very disappointing stay.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Liked antique large dining and lounge rooms (not available to clients)
Bedrooms were cold and disappointing
staff were helpful and polite
Meals were very uninteresting.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was a thoroughly enjoyable and intriguing stay. The rooms are authentic period furnished with modern facilities appropriately added. Hosts were very obliging and the ,meals great value.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Loved the balconies with views of town - can climb the little 'turret' round room to the roof and sit (table and chairs) and see 360degree views, loved the old style furnishings and features. We had a private bathroom (Napolean & Reid rooms) but they were not ensuite so take a dressing gown and slippers for night visits! Breakfast was a good selection of hot food including bacon, sausages, poached eggs, hashbrowns, spinach triangles etc. They also do an all you eat lunch and dinner (10 hot dishes) for <$10AUD p/p (not include desert).
- Cherolyn (8/5): Will be back. - Have driven past for years and always wanted to stay. Will be going back regularly now. Very impressive establishment from a bygone era. Great staff, Good means. Good value for money.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Heritage aspect and uniqueness to area.Lots of space in rooms. Food was adequate and plentiful.
Problem was no explanation of the tricky shower controls--so i managed to flood the bathroom with a horizontal spray? Have never seen them before?
Also no face washers available
- Susan (8/5): A visit into time gone by...... - A wonderful experience to stay in such a historical house. However, I hope it isn't running down. The family servicing it were very polite and accomodating
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved staying at this very grand house. The decor was beautiful. Very good value for money and breakfast included. Staff couldn't do enough. Fantastic stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Just beautiful! Jay was extremely helpful and made use feel very special. The historic atmosphere, antique furniture, artworks and enormous room made for a great experience.
- R (10/5): - Beautiful old historal building. Very friendly staff. Food not very hot and not much available. Trays mostly empty when customers came in later.
- Julie (8/5): - Full of character, private bathroom but not in the bedroom, hot breakfast included.
- Mick (8/5): - Living history. Huge rooms are quite a surprise and comfortable. Building could do with some maintenance none the less.
- Robert Williams (10/5): Hidden Gem - Absolutely loved our stay. We have dined there previously and had a look around this wonderfully preserved museum of a 1800 Mansion. So after viewing the rooms previously we decided we would come back and stay overnight. The owner/manager is the same gentleman who was there on our first visit and offers the same friendly hospitality. He works so hard yet always has a smile on his face. A true gentleman.
The room was a step back in time (if you ignore the free wifi and huge TV, which were a pleasant bonus). Some of the rooms are ensuite and others aren’t, although each room has their own private bathroom down the hall. Part of me doesn’t want to share this hidden gem in case it means we can’t secure a booking in the future as rooms are limited and always in high demand. They provide an excellent buffet dinner for $9.95 which is open to the public and include a free hot and continental breakfast for guests.
- DorothyandRay (10/5): - Spacious, historic and comfortable. And helpful staff.
- Beth (8/5): - Staff were extremely friendly & helpful, the building is amazing but shows its age
- lorein B (10/5): grand old building - Just an overnight stop over but have always noticed in on passing through Tenterfield and am sure I stayed there about 50 years ago as a child
- Brian (8/5): - Thoroughly enjoyed my short stay at Stannum House, will be back again.
- Brett (10/5): Great little stop - We made a late booking and virtually just dropped in but couldn’t have been treated better plus given an amazing dinner
- margit (10/5): - Wonderful mansion to stay at. We loved all the beautiful rooms. Can't wait till our next stay there.
- Tony (10/5): - Great historic building with plenty of character. Great value for the room and the meals.
- Scott (8/5): Great historic building - This is a great old building steeped in history.
The breakfast is plentiful.
- Bubbles&Bundy (8/5): - Lovely warm historic building, great value for money.
- Tricia (10/5): Step back to a grander time - Thoroughly enjoyed our night in a fabulous historic building.
All the mod cons in a beautifully decorated huge room made it a memorable experience.
The staff were efficient and friendly and seemed always available to answer any questions or offer assistance.
Makes for an interesting change from the usual tourist motels.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very old and interesting, full of antiques. A huge bedroom with very comfortable beds. Each bedroom had its own bathroom but they were not attached and you had to walk down the corridor to reach it, not very good for people who have to use the bathroom during the night several times and didn't bring a dressing gown.
- Sally (8/5): We will be back! - I love this place! There are a few minor negatives - bathroom is separate to your bedroom and requires a foray through a shared area, they are a little understaffed (but Lucky is very helpful) and they couldn't find the tape or info about the history of the house.
On the plus side - great value, sumptuous surroundings, you are made very welcome, the town and surrounds are just lovely, it's like being a guest in a friend's place and you get to stickybeak into the past..
All up - it's wonderful!
- Kathleen (10/5): unbelievable history of 1888 - historic and very enjoyable 2 nights, great value accommodation and food-wise, friendly owner and staff, highly recommended
- karen (2/5): No ensuite - Having to walk to the other side of the building for toilet and shower is not good I left I did not stay. Room had many single beds plus one double bed in a dorm room style
I am very disappointed and will not recommend them at all
- Denis (8/5): A mansion sure beats a motel - It was great to stay in an old historic house. High ceilings, period furniture. Creaking stair to the top of the tower. Well worth the money.
- Perry (8/5): Historic House - Big old historic building, our room was huge 8 meters by 10. No bathroom had to go to the back of the building for that. not much fun if you have to visit the little house in the night! Breakfast was good, 5 minute walk into town.
- Tes (6/5): History with a great view from the roof. - Is a nice old home, could use some maintenance to the building - don't lean on the railing on the roof, otherwise you may become part of the ground.
Was a confusion regarding the booking. Otherwise loved the building and all the antiques in it, would have liked a layout of the home at check in and some more history on the building and rooms. Staff were friendly and polite.
Did not have breakfast as had a very long drive and left early so can not say what the restaurant is like.
Was told there was a ghost, went looking (both middle of the night and early morning) and could not find one anywhere, better luck next time I guess.
- Robyn (10/5): Historic home visit - Really unique - such a beautiful building, would stay there again
- Suzy (8/5): Different to the usual motel type of accomodation - Having to leave the room and go around the corner for bathroom activities was not ideal in the middle of the night. The bathmats were a dreadful colour with stains on them. I used my extra towel instead. My suggestion to managers would be to provide a white bath mat to match the while bath towels. Breakfast I could take or leave. No fan or air-conditioning in my room, so probably a good place to stay in winter or between seasons. On the positive side, the lovely old style mansion was quite refreshing, and things were clean and fresh. Staff were polite a helpful. A good price for an overnighter. My Tom Tom navigator did not recognize 114 Rouse Street for some reason, but because it was so easy too see I did not miss it as I might do looking for a motel.
- grant (10/5): Very roomy great breakfast - Arrived late staff waited for us helped us with bags great service
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A very different place to stay. Room was comfortable and the staff were very pleasant.
- greg (8/5): Good old fashion - Good to see how it was in the early days. Lot of history around about the hotel
- Mallee b (8/5): - Great adventure, out of the ordinary, well worth a visit
- Doug & Trish (10/5): Beautiful old mansion - Great staff, great accommodation and great meals at very reasonable prices
- glenda (8/5): - Lovely old building. It is like something time forgot.
