Guest Reviews
- Angel (10/5): - I love staying here every year with my family. Our kids love the pool and we love the grills and picnic tables right outside and how you can walk to the beach and other places
- Diane (10/5): - Clean
Pet friendly
- Rebecca (10/5): - Staff was great.
- Brianna (10/5): - We loved our night at Captain Cove. It was so nostalgic of my family road trips as a kid. Yes, it's very 80's Roadside Motel inside the rooms, but they are clean and comfortable. The staff was so nice and my kids LOVED the pool. Quick walk to the beach and plenty of restaurants around. You can also grill in their adorable courtyard. Would definitely go back!
- Lindsey (8/5): - For the price of the motel it was great. Don’t expect too much, we had a good sleep, and the motel was clean.
- Steven (10/5): - Quick and easy beach access as well as being in walking distance of multiple restaurants and right next to the arcade/ice cream/putt putt.
- Don (4/5): - I booked 2 rooms when I checked in the desk clerk said they only had a reservation for 1 room. They did accommodate me for another but if they couldn't i'd have been really pissed
- Bonnie (8/5): - very rustic yet nice and clean. the staff were all very pleasant and friendly. I'll be back!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The toilet needed a lid. We liked that it was only a short walk to the beach.
- Andrea (10/5): - The staff is super friendly. And if any of them see this review I was the one that stayed during the marathon weekend and I ran. I said I thought I was going to lose my toenail. I did lose it lol
- Jimmy (10/5): - The staff was so nice @ every encounter. The room was clean & neat. Very close to everything! Great experience
- Suzanne (10/5): - The people are really nice here. Incredibly helpful. We had a great stay. Thank y'all so much.
- Suzanne (10/5): - Really nice people here. And, so close to the beach.
- Lisa (8/5): Budget Accomodations in a Great Area - I love this old-school place but if you are picky about your mattress firmness it might not be the best; the beds weren't very comfortable this time.
- Ronald (6/5): - Old property that serves fishermen, construction workers and budget-minded tourists. My room had been refurbished in the recent past and was satisfactory, but bathroom was very dated and small. Wi-Fi was spotty at best, tv was a 36” with minimal channels and a sporadic
Remote controller.
The grounds are not the best but you don’t see them while sleeping. Didn’t utilize the pool.
Asked for a Non-smoking room but was told “All our rooms are smoking”. My room wasn’t too bad, but I didn’t think you could have a lodging facility that was ALL
SMOKING ROOMS!???? Is that even legal?
- Dave (2/5): - This has got to be right up there in the top 3 absolute worst places I’ve stayed in over 50 yrs of traveling. The only plus was the shower water pressure. Floors were filthy, it smelled like an old 1960’s no tell motel, barely an outlet to plug anything into. No vanity top in bathroom for wife to put the girl bathroom stuff on. Beds had plastic pee protectors over the mattresses that squeaked and felt like you’re wrapped in Saran Wrap all night and made you sweat and felt real creepy. The girl that checked me in didn’t seem real happy to be there working. I could go on but won’t…… just remember, you get what you pay for.
- Dawn (6/5): - Staff was very nice. Place is a set back from the 80's with room decor which was okay, but we saw a few bugs in room which changed our opinion overall
- Tracy (10/5): Cozy and Charming - This was an adorable and charming little mom and pop place. Everything about it was inviting with old beach motel charm. The location was amazing in that it was close to beach and restaurants and even in town it was nestled under the oaks with a tropical landscape. This is a sweet spot for family and children to play as well. The staff serviced our room and refreshed it while we took a dip in the pool and we just couldn’t be more pleased with the personal attention. We will definitely return.
- Melisa (10/5): - Enjoyed our stay it was very family oriented and they kept the grounds impeccable. The pool was amazing they even provided pool toys at the kiddie pool.Very convient to shopping restaurants and grocery store .My family will definitely be back!!!
- Anjali (4/5): - Nice pool and location. Cozy and retro. Room quality is pretty poor quality and light bulbs and tv remote and the refrigerator didnt work. Lots of shady people seem to stay there.
- Amber (10/5): - Family motel, everyone was so friendly. Pool was wonderful and beach was a short walk. Will definitely return
- Vincent (8/5): - Great location, room was clean but dated.
- JAMES (10/5): - Family run property with a great little pool for families with kids and just to hang out at during the day. Two block walk to the beach easy to get to close to grocery stores restaurants and anything else you need. Staff is amazing always on site and really work hard to keep the place updated and clean.
- jeremy (2/5): - Literally the worst hotel. Should be a 0 star. I impulsivly booked this hotel because of price and location. We got there and the "lobby" is a disguisting portion of a house. Staff was dressed in dirty pajamas and it looked like a hoarders paradise. When we got to the room it stunk, had cockroaches crawling on the wall and dead beatles. In the bathroom there were ants and the sheets were torn from what i could see. We turned around and left. Not even worth the cheap price.
- Steven (8/5): - This place is 40 years old. For what it is it is amazing friendly staff. Get room 212 you won’t be disappointed. The bed by the air conditioner is absolutely amazing.
- jeffrey (8/5): - This is just a nice old fashioned motel, it is not the ritz and dont expect the ritz.
- Kenneth (8/5): - Great location, 3 blocks to the beach. Older property in pretty good condition. Nobody's gonna steal those towels, they were clean but very thin
- Ontario (6/5): - It was quiet and affordable! I didn’t like the smell of dogs in my room! The staff was very friendly
- Cheryl (10/5): - Very nice place. It is rather old but that increases the atmosphere of being at the beach. I will definitely stay here again.
- Tonya (10/5): A little getaway - Spur of the moment trip with my daughter. Owners were very accommodating. Location is great.
- Theresa (2/5): - Terrible owner!! This place is an absolute ripoff!! Neither owner or staff will work with you!! I would not recommend anyone stay at this hotel!!
- Andrea (4/5): - The room was clean, staff was very pleasant but office smelled horrible of pets and smoke. My room had very strong smell of smoke! Everything in my suitcase smeeled of smoke! Was not happy about that.
- Lisa (8/5): - My husband, and I, really liked the fact, that the owners, and staff, of The Captain's Cove Motel, have been, very
- Mickey (10/5): - I liked that the accessibility to get to our room was easy with safe steps, that the room was clean and ready when we got there. Staff was friendly. Loved how they had it decorated for Halloween! Just a pleasant stay, as it has been the each of the 7 times we were there!
- Yvette (6/5): - Didn’t like that every room is a smoking room. No hairdryer, box or tissue or guest shampoo/conditioner.
Did like that rooms have fridge & microwaves. Rooms are very old but clean.
- Maureen (4/5): - All rooms were smoking. The tub wasn't clean. The curtains & bedspreads were outdated and oversized. The soft chair was over-used and old. Lots of noise & banging from room above our room. Terrible parking, not enough. The beach is much further than the map shown shows.
- Sheila (10/5): - Friendly, helpful staff. We love Captains Cove Motel
- Jeanne (2/5): - The doors to the rooms were all open. And there were bed bugs showing through mattress pads. I could not stay there. They refused to refund my money
- jacqueline (10/5): - The property is exactly as advertised. It is an older motel and rooms are small. However; the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Rooms were very clean and the pool is wonderful. Love the fact that they have a kiddie pool (big enough for 6-8 young children). They can splash to their content.
- Kassandra (10/5): - We have been coming here for many years. The location and the staff are great. I have stayed dozens of times andI wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Feels like coming home
- Rebecca (8/5): - Captain's Cove was perfect for a trip to beach with my dog! Convenient location. It's no-frills, but has everything needed and was clean. Will definitely be staying here again.
- Ann (8/5): - The motel is what I needed for one night for me and my dog. I dont need frills, just clean and safe. The only problem I had was them telling me the price with my dog is an extra $50. I explained that it is advertised online with pets staying free. She said she needed to call and fix that. But I wasnt charged the extra $50. I would not stay at this motel for an extra $50. Otherwise, it was what I needed
- Brayden (6/5): - It’s really one of those “pay for what you get” type of places. When you’re vacationing on a budget I recommend this place. Keep in mind that you give up a few “higher quality” items when you pay for a cheaper place to stay. They only provide small bar soaps and not the travel size shampoos, conditioner, or body wash like a hotel would. The cleanliness of the room was good, but the beds seemed much smaller than a queen size. There seemed to be more long term residents and I’d say they were not necessarily the type I’d intentionally put my family and valuables around. EVERY room is a smoking room and reeks of cigarettes. They did not have a broom in the room which I thought was odd given it’s the beach and the sand you track into the room. It is within walking distance of a restaurant and ice cream place, it also has a side street that you could walk to the beach. All in all it was an okay place to stay for a short getaway and to bring along our dog, but it definitely isn’t somewhere I’d want to stay for longer than a weekend.
- michelle (8/5): - Nice and quiet. Easy beach access
- Stephon (8/5): Great service on a budget - The staff was super friendly! Our room was clean overall.
The only issues we had were the drain in the tub wasn’t draining but I just unscrewed the plug completely to let it drain, we did find one small roach and spider in the restroom but they were killed and disposed of. The motel in general has a lot of trees and shubbrery so bugs are to be expected occasionally.
Overall we had a great experience on a budget! The motel is only a block from the ocean and close enough to multiple businesses to walk. Will definitely visit again.
- Audrey (10/5): - Loved it
- Crystal (10/5): - This property is great for families and it's minutes from local shops. The owner is an amazing person and is very friendly and very professional.10/10 would recommend
- Tony (10/5): - Love staying at Captains Cove. Will definitely stay again.
- Izaak (6/5): - The pictures on internet of the property are better than the property them zelf.
- John (10/5): - Excellent!
- Audrey (10/5): - Loved it
- WILLIAM (10/5): Dog friendly - Great hotel dog friendly and a short walk to the beach
- Wayne (10/5): - The staff was real nice and sufficient. Our room was very clean. The management was very good to us and we had a large time we will stay there again. We could not ask for a better place to stay. Very peaceful and quiet Walking distance to ocean and to eat. Thumps up to owner.
- Howard (8/5): - Perfect for a quick 1 night.
Bed linens and rooms need some updates.
Overall clean and comfortable.
- Janis (10/5): Fantastic! - This place was just fantastic! Super clean and very very well maintained! This will definitely be our go to spot!
- George (10/5): - Really great option for an affordable getaway to a beautiful place
- L5995JGangelah (10/5): Jam H review ignorant. Great place - I have stayed here for years, it’s great. It’s not super fancy but it’s amazing for families and those w pets. I recommend if you want a close beach stay and close to everything. The review below is not accurate. The owners are elderly themselves so they do not discriminate against age so good luck lol. They are 70-80s and several elderly families stay there that I’ve seen.
- JamH42 (2/5): If I could put a ZERO I WOULD! - Captains Cove could not have been worse! My 84 year old mother was checking in there last night 8-7-2022 and almost slipped on a wet tile floor. She lodged a complaint with the hotel owners and was promptly kicked out with no where else to go! They deemed her a “liability and refused to let her stay! Now I know my mom can be a bit cranky at 84 but to send her packing at 5pm and having to scramble to find other accommodations is unacceptable! She ended up at a different hotel several miles away from my other family that is staying on the island and had to pay $500 additional in room fees! I called and politely asked the owners to explain to me how they could be so rude and was yelled at and hung up on several times! DO NOT SUPPORT THIS HOTEL AND THESE UNFORGIVING OWNERS! I am considering a law suit for age discrimination at this point and why not I would not mind owning a hotel at the each!
- Tammy (10/5): - My husband and myself have stayed here every time we visit Oak Island. The owner is great and her staff are very friendly and helpful in getting anything we need or ask for. Thank you Ms Linda, we hope to see y’all soon
- Janice (2/5): - Rude check in person. Room was horrible. Not cleaned. Had to get someone to vacuum. We assume the person next door to our room lives there because they have a cat and we kept hearing knocking on their door all night long. The beds did not even have a box spring. It was just one mattress on top of another. The pillows were stained. The pool was clean. Booked for two nights. Couldn’t stay the second night. Booked the Holiday Inn. Much better.
- Barry (2/5): - Property is just older but Property wasnt bad
- George (10/5): - We had a great time. They have the best location on the island. An inexpensive way to enjoy a really terrific beach!!
- Stefanie (2/5): - One word: ROACHES. Sometimes life requires that you take a budget friendly option, but I would not even pay half the cost to stay here! The lady at check-in was entirely unprofessional as we tried to fix a hiccup in the reservation. Finally done there, we get to our room and its AWFUL. Carpet hasn't been shampooed in 20 years or more, walls and baseboards were filthy, and comforters were years old and were literally patched and faded to where you barely could see the original design. When we came back from dinner, there was a roach crawling on the wall, one in the tub, and two others decided my toiletry bag was interesting to play in, GROSS!!!! I can handle older and worn, but filthy and bug-infested I will not. We will never, NEVER, stay at this place again! My skin is still crawling....
- Beverly (2/5): Can you spell SCUMHOLE??? - This property should not be listed on Hotels.com. This was the worst scumhole we have ever had the displeasure of staying in. We would not have stayed past the first five minutes if we had another choice, but it was the beach and Memorial Day Weekend. Although illegal in NC, all the rooms were smoking rooms, as well as the common areas, even where they did laundry. Even the clothes we didn't wear, our suitcases, shoes and everything smelled like cigarettes when we got home. There was a small TV with a non-working remote. There were no hair dryers, no shampoo, and threadbare, dirty towels and bed linen. The "pool" was a joke and had cracked, pitted walking areas that were dangerous, especially being wet. The "shower" at the pool was a spigot with an indentation in the sidewalk to catch the water which overran into the parking lot. There were people smoking and drinking alcohol with children at the pool and in the "playground". The people at the check-in desk were smoking and blowing it in our faces. There was not enough parking so that when we came back from dinner we had to park next door in a filthy lot. There were people grilling with giant fires in the common areas that were also dangerous. I must reiterate THIS PROPERTY SHOULD NOT BE LISTED ON HOTELS.COM. If it would get me anywhere, I would demand a refund, however, I know that would get me nowhere. Our Memorial Day weekend (and we're both veterans) was ruined because of this dump!!!
- Mark (2/5): - Never checked in !!
Asked for a ground level room not second floor , owner/ manager took key to room then told us to leave !! Very rude mean lady !!!
- Sidney (10/5): - We were so pleasantly surprised with this place! The room was spacious and even had a table to sit at. Everyone we talked to was so friendly and the atmosphere was easy going and laid back. The walk to the beach was easy and quick, plus the beach access was one of the less busy ones which was nice. We didn’t use the pool but it was a plus to have that. We will definitely be coming back!
- Chandra (8/5): - Enjoyed the stay. Rooms could use a good cleaning. Would stay again.
- Kristy (8/5): Beach stay - Accommodations were average. No frills. Waited 20 plus minutes for check in even after ringing the bell. Dogs on site barked all night long.
- Janice (8/5): Good time - Very nice I would stay again
- Bobby (10/5): - Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- laweez (8/5): Pet friendly is the best amenity - We've stayed here several times. The one caveat I would like people to know is to never stay in Room 142. It is next to Housekeeping and you can literally hear every word they say in there, early in the morning. And they are LOUD. So if you stay away from that room, you should be fine. Be aware that all rooms are smoking and may have had pets in them in the past, if you are super-picky about that kind of thing. People are friendly overall.
- Gary (8/5): - Room was neat and clean. Wished we could have gotten a non-smoking room but there wasn't one available.
- John (10/5): Easy living - Totally rustic. It was nice. Not nice like a new resort, nice like you feel at home staying there. Clean enough to be healthy, dirty enough to be happy. Thinking about going back someday to stay for a month.
- Linda J (4/5): - Arrived and they had no reservation for me. After showing confirmation and reciept for room with two queens was given rom with one ful bed. Upn initial inspection of room it looked ok. Within few mins of checking in started seeing roaches. Went and purchased can of roach spray and used all during three night stay. Had i had any other option and not been out over $300. i would have left imediately.
- Janice (4/5): - Best part was1&1/2 blocks from beach. Mold & strong smoke smell were bad.
- Tamatha (4/5): - Surroundings were good
- royf588 (6/5): Quaint Family Establishment - If you are used to large, chain hotels, this might not be the place for you. First, it is a smoking facility. All rooms have an old school ashtray in them and all rooms smell of either stale cigarette smoke or fresh smoke. Although they sport 2 double beds, the rooms are small and the AC in the rooms is an addition with plugs added in channels on the outside of the pine paneling. In our room, the bathroom door was falling off the hinges and it had to be finagled to close completely. The owners/proprietors were nice, people and the clientele were simple folks who enjoyed their stay. The beach was a 500-yard walk down the street and was a clean and well-maintained beach. It is ocean facing and morning walks in the sunrise gave us views of fishing boats, pelicans diving for fish, and fishermen casting from shore.
- Jeanette (6/5): - I loved the dog area where they can use the bathroom. I did not like that I had to pay 50 extra dollars upon arrival because it was not asked on Expedia for a pet deposit. What if we didn't have enough money and we are 4 hours away from home?
- Nancy (2/5): - Staff was extremely rude, we did not stay
- Tammy (10/5): - Excellent service at this motel.
- Mark (10/5): - Older property, but it was well maintained, very clean, and you can't beat the price. Excellent location. We are already planning a trip back.
- Jacqueline (8/5): - The rooms were dark and needed a good cleaning. The staff however was very nice and friendly. The motel was convenient to shopping and dinning.
- Sandra (2/5): Don't go here! - Bugs in the room and lots of smells from cigerettes.
Grouchy woman attended the counter.
- Thomas (10/5): - Pleasant stay in quaint surroundings
- Vicki (10/5): - Enjoyed the pet friendlines and the beach being in walking distance. The only problem was ordering food and having to use the bed as a table.
- WAYNE (6/5): - Quiet, clean, helpful staff. Rooms need to be updated, new mattress is # 1 update item, not comfortable due to age? Type? or both. Overall, this lodge is OK for one night stays.
- Tammy (10/5): - First time staying here and we are already talking about when we are going to come back! Friendly down home folks who work here. Property is exactly what I hoped for it to be. Captain’s Cove motel is my kinda place and thank you for not getting to technology smart!! That means a lot to some people 😊
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It’s nice smokers friendly
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Decorative
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was a great mini vacation. My only complaint was the mattresses need to be replaced. It was fine if just one person was in bed but 2 people it squeaked and dipped badly. The service was impeccable and the staff was awesome. We will definitely stay here again. Very clean and safe!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The room was dated but was clean. Smokers used the room did not smell of smoke. The staff was attentive and helpful; there was always clean towels. Parking was tight but we always found a place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Easy access to the pool and restaurants. We love this place!
- Carrie (2/5): Got my money 3 months ago, didn't have a room . - Never even got a chance to stay. Paid in April, told when we arrived in July that they never received our reservation and did not have a room for us. They did get my money though. Called hotels.commfor a refund and now have to wait for the hotel to confirm that they wouldn't give us a room to get my money back. Meanwhile had to drive n hour and a half for another room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a nice little motel. We would stay again but definitely wasn't expecting a smoking room. Cigarette burns all over over bed covers. Redheaded girl at check in was about as friendly as an alligator. Housekeeping was best part. For the price it was fine but noway would I pay more than $100 a night. We did love all the outdoor seating and the landscaping the pool was super clean.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good and bad. - The staff was amazing. They were friendly and informative. They provided plenty of towels and ice when we needed it.The downside was the room was dusty on the walls. I'm allergic so it was a concern. Another downside was the bed we slept in was broken and uncomfortable. The box spring was hanging down onto the floor and it was so lumpy. Neither one of us got a good night's sleep. We like the area and previous visit was good. Worth checking out.
- Ashley (8/5): Clean and Cute but Uncomfortable Beds - Great little motel with features that make an older property still pleasing. Enjoyed the small additions like multiple grills setup for guest use and ample outdoor seating. Even saw a few cornhole boards to use. Only complaint are the ancient mattresses that hurt my back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): older property near a beautiful beach - The closeness of the absolutely gorgeous beach made up for the motel's shortcomings. If you just need a bed with clean bedding , towels & bathroom close to the beach this is the place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Old school beach motel, nice pool, helpful staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was amazing
