Guest Reviews
- Andrew (6/5): -
- Colin (8/5): - Very hospitable, very clean, lovely big towels, easy walk into town centre No breakfast available until 10am
- Scott (6/5): All good but bed was sunken in the middle - Good location, friendly staff Bed was poor...sunk in the middle
- Paula (8/5): -
- Anthea (9/5): Very enjoyable overnight stay. Would stay there again. - Lovely room. Spotlessly clean. Good facilities. Very attentive staff. Nothing we didn’t like. We would stay there again.
- Nicolini (10/5): Servizio elevatissimo. - Tutto. Strepitosa!
- Sarah (6/5): Ok for a one night stay - Standard double room, very similar to a travelodge. Excellent WIFI, comfortable bed and peaceful at night. Great location right within the town centre which was only a few minutes walk, as was Ely Cathedral. Free parking in public car park next to property, although there are some restrictions which may mean you need to move your car from one car park to another depending on arrival/departure time. Room was very overpriced for a basic double room (£75). There is no swimming pool or fitness centre within the property as advertised. There is some kind of sports centre opposite the property but it is in no way connected to the property. I did not visit it. I did not eat at the property. I did look at the overpriced carvery at £17.99. As per other reviews it appeared extremely dried up and had clearly been there all day. However, there are plenty of other restaurants and takeaways within walking distance.
- Lindsey (8/5): Would stay again if needed to travel to Ely - Location was just right for where I needed to be
- Wyatt (4/5): Would not recommend unless you’re on a very tight budget. - The staff is truly wonderful! Nice location in Ely. There are many construction and maintenance issues in the room. The flooring in the bathroom is severely warped and uneven, the shower door does not close, and the ceiling light is rigged up by makeshift strings.
There are no curtains in one window and thin curtains of the other so the sun will certainly wake you. The pillows were terribly uncomfortable and the room felt very worn overall.
- Kelly (6/5): Room was comfortable but bathroom smell and cleanliness let it down sadly - Easy check in, comfy bed Bathroom in room 3 had bad smell, floor wasn’t hoovered and bin not emptied .
- Kate (8/5): -
- Judy (6/5): Comfortable accommodation for a one night stay. Shame about the smell. - Location was good Terrible smell coming from bathroom I think
- epton (8/5): Good stay and location - We really liked the location. Hotel staff were very friendly. Bed was very comfy, we did sleep well. If anyone is looking for a good rate, and great location, and not bothered about eating there, then I would recommend. We would definitely stay there again, if visiting Ely, purely for the location and comfy bed. The size of the room (Room 4) was very small, decor very tired, broken bin and leg on desk needs mending, toilet seat was loose, no sink in plug, so had to keep tap running when using sink. I had read reviews before we booked to say the rooms were dirty. I would not say ours was, of course could have been better but we have seen worse. Curtains were very thin, so let sunlight in very early, did not effect us, but might some.
Had an evening meal in the restaurant, but not great, did not eat there again.
- Rory (9/5): Lovely hotel for a flying visit. - Friendly helpful staff. We have stayed here before and hopefully will stay here again.
- Andrew (8/5): - None
- Jacoebie (7/5): - The hospitality and room How the TV stopped working
- Lee (8/5): -
- sharon (9/5): Clean and cosy - Right next to town, did the job.
The lady who greeted us was lovely very helpful All was good
- Terri (10/5): Absolutely fabulous! - Close to Town centre and excellent facilities. Nothing to not like!
- Theresa (8/5): We had a very pleasant stay. - Location was excellent for accessing all the sights of Ely Some decaffeinated coffee sachets in the room would be nice.
- Carl (5/5): Clean and tidy place to sleep for a quick over night stay. - Good location. Was clean and tidy Curtains let light in very thin one window had no curtains.
- Pascale (3/5): -
- Caine (8/5): -
- amanda (7/5): -
- Eric (10/5): Excellent in every way. - The staff were absolutely fantastic. Rachael, in particular, did everything she could to make sure I was very comfortable, and catered to my every need. I am truly grateful! Rachael, when we are back in July, I'll be sure to come by and introduce my kids to you! (This is Chandrika - the review is under my husband's name) Nothing.
- Rachel (7/5): - Very welcoming and friendly.
Ideal location to Ely Town centre. N/a
- Philip (9/5): Loverly place Ely lots of history, the riverside is a lovely place to go and see just 15 minutes walk from hotel - Location to centre, free parking really well presented clean and staff friendly Nothing
- Patricia (7/5): I did enjoy my stay, but next time I would probably try somewhere else…. - The location was good, the room was comfy (I slept well), the staff were lovely and I really liked the outside space.. I didn’t really have any view from the window.. there was a lack of information in the room eg: breakfast, lunch, dinner options and also a map or information about the area would have been helpful..
- Marie (5/5): - Comfortable bed, great quick check in The room had a very strong smell of sewage.
Definitely not a superior room
- Lynette (9/5): short visit at excellent value - good location. friendly and helpful staff. clean and comfortable.
- Ian (9/5): Great. - All apart from terrible shower. Refer aove.
- Raj (10/5): - Very friendly staff
- Sally (10/5): A brilliant short break - The High Flyer is in an excellent location with car parking. It is well used by the local community with good reason, both the beer and the food are great. What makes it even better are the very welcoming and friendly staff, in particular, Ava, Rachael and Leon the excellent chef. Thank you for a memorable stay.
- Rebecca (8/5): Friendly hotel close to town. - Really friendly staff.
- Janet (9/5): Good value for money, great location, will happily visit again. - Breakfast wasn't served till 10am, so we ate elsewhere.
The room was clean and comfortable wi-fi was a bit 'iffy' and the website was contradictory about breakfast..
- Jamie (10/5): -
- peter (7/5): good value - friendly staff
- Amanda (7/5): -
- Victoria (10/5): -
- Laura (8/5): Excellent location at a very good value with free parking. Lovely staff - Staff were fantastic. Really friendly throughout the stay Only thing that wasn’t fantastic was a smell in the bathroom. Clearly a drainage issue and not a room problem as I could smell it in the restaurant toilet also.
- B (7/5): Room basic but clean, comfy and affordable, front of house great but don't bother with the food - Checkin staff was lovely. Room was pleasant and bed comfy. A cute area on the landing as you went upstairs to the rooms where you could help yourself to extra tea/coffee sweeteners etc.
The room was clean and had a good sized TV. Rooms were quiet and the hotel is in a good location close to the market square. There is free car parking next door too. There was no breakfast offered at all. And no one there for check out. We hovered in the reception area and was told by the beer delivery guy that there isn't normally anyone there that early and that people usually just leave their key on the side somewhere. We checked out at 10 and came back to have lunch but we really wish we hadn't.
- paul (6/5): - The location and on site parking The room is somewhat tired. The bed is a standard double with a large room you would expect a king size. The Bathroom has shower door that doesn't close, the toilet is stained below the waterline and the floor boards by the shower door appear bouncy and maybe rotten.
- Miranda (8/5): -
- Butler (9/5): - Excellent staff and service. Food very good. One small thing. Toilet seat in room 3 was loose
- sara (10/5): - The bar is well stocked and the staff are lovely plus it's in an excellent location. We have stayed a few times and realise we prefer room number 2 over number 1
- Nigel (10/5): Very nice hotel, would recommend - Very friendly hotel, well equipped room and extremely comfortable bed. Breakfast menu slightly limited but adequate. Well situated within 5 minute walk of the town centre. Small car park but plenty of car parks within walking distance. Would recommend to anyone
- Derek (8/5): Very nice -
- Rozina (10/5): Wonderfully enlightening - I booked this for visiting family. The property was beautiful & whimzicle which was fun and charming. The white and light decor was really uplifting. What a lovely environment. Nothing. Everything was beyond expectations.
- Derek (2/5): Poor food the dinner was bad - No breakfast available The room was 8x12 very small with a 55in TV so close to the bed
- Robert (8/5): - No breakfast Room was a bit stuffy. Ventilation not great even though the window was open. It was a warm day though.
- Jean (4/5): Disappointing - The staff were very welcoming, The room was clean. Tea and coffee facilities were available in the room and there was a basket on the stairs for you to help yourself should you run out. Although the booking was room only, there were no facilities for breakfast, despite being a restaurant. I ate in the restaurant on the first evening, but the food was poor. My spaghetti carbonara was cooked with noodles instead of spaghetti! I didn't use the restaurant again! My room was small and extremely hot and stuffy. I was informed that checkout was 10am but the reception was locked and there were no staff around to check me out. A very disappointing stay.
- Alison (10/5): Excellent! - The staff were very accommodating and very friendly. They answered any questions we had, we were able to leave our luggage safely once we had checked out.
A taxi was arranged for us to take us back to the train station.
The location was great, very close to the city centre. We would definitely visit again!
- Lester (8/5): - The location is excellent, the room is clean and the bed was comfy The thing they need to sort out is breakfast, it doesn't start until 10a.m, this is far to late for breakfast.
- Adam (10/5): -
- Sheila (3/5): Would not return. - The location was great The bed was uncomfortable and the toilet flush was erratic. Did report issue.
- ROB (7/5): -
- Chris (8/5): Very nice break (apart from the above incident). - Didn't have the breakfast but the location and general setting was very good. Whilst it isn't exactly a criticism I had a problem with the shower as it wouldn't turn off. Unfortunately the reception wasnt manned until 10 am and there didnt appear to be anyone around downstairs so I rang the emergency number st 8.10 but got no answer. I rang it again at 8.20 am when a lady answered who said someone should be available to come and have a look. Nobody arrived and it was only after 10 am that I found someone downstairs who cane up to have a look and eventually she was able to turn the shower off. This meant that hot water was running for nearly two hours. I was quite disappointed that nobody came back to update me as I felt it was an emergency and should have been treated as such. (Also I felt I couldn't leave the bedroom until it was sorted out).
- Andrewartha (6/5): - Very friendly staff, superb service and excellent chef No shower gel provided; only 1 cup and saucer for 2 persons; no mattress protector and stained duvet.
- Steve (10/5): -
- Nichola (9/5): We loved the location. And the staff were fabulous just a little more attention to cleaning the bathroom and it would h - Very cozy and staff were amazing The toilet was dirty on arrival and complimentary products were open on the shower which looked like it hadn’t been cleaned
- Alex (9/5): Nice, cozy and budget friendly - The place is very close to high street and there is large public parking next to the building. Rooms are on top of the pub so you enter and exit thru the pub, but they were well isolated and seemed like sound-proof. Room size was good and well cleaned. Not a big nuisance but bath tub was leaking water during shower. Pub's own parking was limited to only 3 cars so you have to park in public parking, which is 3hrs max stay. If parking overnight, you must leave before 8 am or pay daily long-stay charge (around 4-5 quid).
- Elizabeth (5/5): Look elsewhere - Location It was dirty (it looked like it had not been cleaned). I had to get management up to look at the toilet (not cleaned), shower (not cleaned) and bed (with what appeared to have hair on the cover), No wifi (advertised but not delivered). Wine or champagne advertised on arrival. Not offered.
- Alison (10/5): Bed was so comfortable, breakfast was lovely, great location, we will be back - Amazing I liked everything about the property
- Frederick (4/5): - We booked two rooms on Saturday 27th December for an overnight stopover en route to the airport. Room 3 was satisfactory; however, Room 2 was disappointing. It was noticeably smaller than Room 3 and the radiator was noisy, clicking throughout the night.
The main concern was the internal en-suite bathroom, which had a persistent and unpleasant damp/sewage smell. The extractor fan was not functioning and appeared to have been out of order for some time. In addition, the tea and coffee facilities were poorly stocked, with no coffee sachets and no regular tea available—only decaffeinated and herbal options. The additional supplies on the stairway were the same.
I would strongly recommend that Room 2 be taken out of use until these issues are properly addressed. Unfortunately, due to our early departure on Sunday morning to catch a flight from Stansted, we were unable to raise these concerns with staff at the time.
- Alyson (8/5): Lovely stay but no option of twin room. - Lovely quiet room. Great TV. Bed was small, disappointing, could do with superfine room was big enough.
Bathroom was great size but cold, needs another heater.
- Colman61 (5/5): Night away - The room & bathroom was great tv on wall was to big for the room no water in room and no coffee and somethings in bathroom were not clean and tidy
- Lionel (8/5): - Great location. Easy to park. Fantastic value for money for this location!
Very friendly and helpful staff
The food at the Pub the previous night was good. Nothing really.
The bed was a bit soft but this is only a matter of preference.
- Alan (10/5): - Cosy, quiet, great staff and nice bar/restaurant. Really close to city centre.
- Darran (8/5): -
- Nigel (8/5): -
- Emily (4/5): The staff are lovely but the food is poor and overpriced. The rooms are ok - The staff were very nice and beds were comfortable We ate here in the evening, I ordered the lasagne which was tiny and had been microwaved so much that any sauce had evaporated it was just hard pasta and dry meat which I would of expected from a cafe with cafe prices but for £17.00 I expected a lot more. The room was ok but the walls are so thin you can hear everything and the shower didn’t drain properly.
- Cheryl (8/5): Would recommend - Very central location. Plenty of parking Bathroom extractor fan not working
- Kayleigh (7/5): Very nice, carvery was lovely! - Very central, comfortable and clean There was a breakfast menu, but breakfast was closed when we went down. Walls are paper thin can hear talking from other rooms
- Cheryl (9/5): -
- Royston (10/5): -
- sara (10/5): - Excellent position for shops and attractions
- Lisa (7/5): -
- Steven (7/5): Great location for visiting family in Ely - The location is great for reaching everywhere in Ely by foot . Food in the hotel is nice and rooms are a good size .Staff are all very friendly .
- Jemma (9/5): Perfect just what we needed for an over night stay - The staff were very friendly and hospitable The clicking and clonking in room 1 which I guess was from the radiator/boiler. The room is dark due to small windows
- John Michael (6/5): Did the job but wouldn’t rush to go back - The location , the food was good but poor service The service in the restaurant was poor . Had to wait about 50 minutes for a carvery and then another 30 minutes for an Eton mess . The kitchen then said the docket had blown off the rack. The room was fine but the rest of the hotel was very cold as a result of open outside doors .the internet was also very intermittent.
- Susan (7/5): - Good location and a good price. Well presented room Not very fresh odour from bathroom.
- Janette (7/5): - The staff were very helpful Noise in room.dirty disabled toilet at noon
- Caroline (2/5): Uncomfortable - The bathroom really smelt horrible. And the room wasn’t that clean.
- Christine (9/5): -
- Dean (3/5): -
- Diana (10/5): -
- Denver (8/5): Good. - Clean and friendly. No complaints No air con
- TERRY (9/5): - Friendly staff and lovely clean room. Awful parking, and room price quite high
- Matthew (8/5): Very agreeable location and facilities - Pleasant building The broken sink that has been badly repaired
- Ann (7/5): Friendly and accommodating - The staff were very welcoming. There was a smell in the room. A few air fresheners may have helped.
- Nigel (8/5): -
- Stefan (9/5): -
- Moira (8/5): - Very friendly helpful staff.
- Jonathan (8/5): - Very friendly staff Toilet stopper working in the morning.
- JOHN (7/5): It was a good break - The people and location Big bar and restaurant area
- Richard (9/5): - Location was great, the staff were fantastic. I had an issue with my room (previous "guest" had stolen the TV remote), and so was given a free meal for the trouble. The carvery on offer daily was very good also. The covers and pillows both were a bit thick for my personal liking (common issue in hotels!).
- Gary (4/5): The lady that owned or ran the pub could not do enough.Table staff spilt wine on the top and never cleaned it up,and one - The property was fine.Good location for the event we were attending,as also to visit the town and the Cathederal. The room was very modern with a bathroom that was also as big as the sleeping area.Which to be honest was a bit on the tight side.It would not have classed it as a £115 room.Have stayed in other pubs and hotels, admittedly not in Ely and got a much bigger room for that sort of money
- Miriam (8/5): - Friendly staff. Pleasant ambience. Comfortable bed. Dinner in the evening.
It took over an hour to come.
We felt sorry for the lovely waitress who was embarrassed at the messages she had to bring. We should have been advised to eat earlier.
- Paula (8/5): The high flyer, honest review - The room was clean and it was a great location. The top showerhead was very dirty and grubby. The sheets were very rough. must be the washing powder. Using the restaurant we had to wait over 40 mins to be served and the Carvery ran out of various components.
