Guest Reviews
- Adam (9/5): - Czystość , lokalizacja Słabe wi-fi
- Maulik (10/5): Absolutely fantastic, local Japanese vibe, amazing location and cozy vibe ! - It’s excellent property …. Loved every bit of it .. specially the location .. Nothing in specific .. except the complimentary water should be given for the number of nights someone is staying in for …
- Jasmina (10/5): Amazing experience in Kyoto - Loved the traditional home, amazing experience. Thank you very much. Everything was good
- Thuy Linh (10/5): Highly recommend - worth your money - We collected the key from the reception desk near Kyoto Station. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and they also offered a luggage delivery service for early key collection, so there was no need for us to be present at the property — which saved us a lot of time!
The property has a very traditional Japanese style, perfect for those who want to experience a classic Japanese home. It is clean, beautifully maintained, and conveniently located close to several tourist attractions.
- Hue (8/5): Brilliant, love the set up and how everything was displayed. Great location! - Location is great. We love the house and I think it has great features that made us all feel the Japan life style. My husband is almost 2 meters tall and the entrance and all doors in the house are 1.7m height. He hit his heads properly 10 times mostly in the living room as there are beams from one space to another. You should advise this in your listing to warn the guests. We expected heritage home are low. Just did mot know how low it was until we arrived.

- Married White Female (10/5): Gorgeous house in easy walking distance to Gion and Kiyomizu Dera - Beautiful, cozy and traditional house.
- Erin (10/5): Great location & comfy--be aware of the steep stairs - Excellent location, comfy beds, functional washer and hang dry rack for clothes. The bath is amazing, and check in (once you arrive at the property itself) was super easy. They also provide great amenities (cooking oil, salt, pepper, soy sauce, etc.) just ask at the desk when checking in. My family lovingly referred to the stairs leading to the second floor as death stairs 😂 they're slippery and steep, and the bathrooms are both downstairs, so brace yourself for midnight restroom trips. The other downside was having to go to a separate location for check in, which was a bit of a hassle because it's super busy, but nothing that can't be overcome with a little planning if you look at the locations ahead of time and grab a taxi if you have lots of luggage. Also, most taxis will not drop you off directly at the accommodation, but they'll get you close by and tell you how to get there.
- Elsja H (10/5): Comfortable, great location and exceptional service - I really want to rave about the Machiya house team. Whilst check-in was a little cumbersome, the service beyond this exceeded our expectations. We got settled into our (first) house and unfortunately that night my husband became very ill. The next day he was in bed ALL day and struggled due to loud and continuous construction noise going on on both sides of the home. When we let the team know, they went above and beyond to give us options to make our stay more comfortable. Not only did they offer us different accomodation options, they allowed for us to have a very late check out so that we could remain in the house until we had to leave for the airport. This made a world of difference to our family as we were so afraid the rest of us would catch my husband's gastro. Special shout out to Kimaru who organised the move to a new house and met us there to show us around.
All that said, if it weren't for the construction (which the Machiya team were unaware of as it was being done privately), the house was great! Perfect location for exploring the streets of Gion near the temples, shops and cafes. The second house gave us a bit of perspective and made us realise the Rikyu-An location really was great and I ended up walking back there to visit the area again. We were only in Kyoto a few nights at the end of a busy trip so didn't do much exploring beyond this area.
I was worried about the comfort of the futons for our kids but they were very comfy and kids had no complaints.
Would definitely stay in a Machiya property again if we ever head back to Japan. Not a fault but just something to take notice of- there is no toilet upstairs where the bedrooms are and the stairs are narrow and steep. Wasn't great for my hubby who was up and down all night when sick but usually wouldn't be a big issue. Just had to make sure the kids were really careful going down at night in the dark. Also, the water temperature seemed to have a max set so we couldn't get it QUITE as hot as we wanted after being out in the cold but it was not too bad.
- JIAYAN (10/5): Wonderful experience. Very warm, won’t feel cold in winter. - perfect location.
- Jo (9/5): Would stay again loved the property it really is such a special location and very nice place to stay - The location was fantastic and loved the traditional Japanese style of living The beds were not so comfortable
- HATEM (10/5): -
- Jane (10/5): We loved staying in this beautifully renovated traditional house just a block away from one of Kyoto’s most picturesque - Charming and beautifully renovated traditional house, just a stone’s throw from one of the most picturesque streets in Kyoto yet super quiet and private. Nothing
- William (9/5): Wonderful stay - really sad to leave. - Location was unbelievable! Really enjoyed being in a quiet section of a prime neighborhood. Photo opps were incredible and the feel was serene. I'd highly recommend the machiya for a family looking for the right spot in Kyoto. Futon beds were a bit tough o get used to.
- Zhen (10/5): We had an amazing time in Kyoto! The location was superb, making it easy to explore the city. Staying in an authentic Ja - We had an amazing time in Kyoto! The location was superb, making it easy to explore the city. Staying in an authentic Japanese house added a unique and memorable touch to our trip. The house was cozy, comfortable, and equipped with all the amenities we needed. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, which made our stay even more enjoyable. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience traditional Japanese hospitality!
- Reshmi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Niklas (10/5): Amazing authentic Japanese house - Small, but beautiful and authentic Japanese home in the centre of the Kiyomizu-dera district, a short walk from the temple and the Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka pedestrian streets. Ceilings are low and the house can be a bit cold in some rooms during winter, but there is efficient sufficient heating in all bed and living rooms and overall cleanliness and living standards are high. In all, a far greater experience than staying in a classic hotel. Highly recommended!
- Veronika (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely stunning traditional accommodation. It was snowing outside but the air-conditioning kept us super warm. So close to everything - just off the main street. Uber with luggage from check-in was cheap. Rest walked and buses. Machiya Inns check-in were super helpful and nice as well. 2 toilets. Bathroom and rooms beautiful. Awesome value for money. Nothing - everything was great.
- Rebecca (10/5): We loved staying here and would happily stay here again! - The location was perfect!!
- Nicolas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sudipta (10/5): Perfect Ryokan getaway - The location of the property is great. Right in the Gion district where the most popular Japanese streets are located. The property was great, loved every thing about it.
- Angeline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jem (10/5): - Beautiful machiya in a quiet part of Kyoto but so close to the attractions
Highly recommend!
- Breck (10/5): Excellent base camp for exploring Kyoto -
- Ray (10/5): Fantastic location, accommodation, and staff! Kyoto is an amazing place to visit. -
- Tejas (10/5): Perfect location , a good house will full amenities - Clean and organised Not a lot to complain
- Holly (10/5): Great location & zen stay at Japanese style house - Fantastic location
Less than 5 mins from the popular Yasaka Pagoda (which is great if you’re wanting to wake up at 6am for quiet street shots)
The house is a beautiful taste of Japanese living, the rooms, bathroom, living room, the little garden, felt very zen
Bags were delivered to house and picked up from house (after you checked in at their office which is right by Kyoto train station)
Your key is a digital key/ lock so you can go straight to the house at 3pm check in Nothing - other than be warned the living room has no sofa as its Japanese style ! We used the bedding in the cupboard to lie on
- Rachel (9/5): I wished I could stay longer! - The house was beautiful! There was obviously a lot of love and thought put into the design of the house and the preparation for guests. We had everything we needed. Beds were super comfortable, water was nice and hot for winter, and heater warmed up the rooms really well. It would be a dream to be able to live in a house like this. The check-in reception is further than we expected from the house we booked. We didn’t want to catch the bus with our massive luggage, so we decided to walk. We did enjoy the walk, but anyone with multiple luggage and heavy bags would probably have to catch a taxi instead.
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Abdulaziz (10/5): Exceptional -
- Torrey (9/5): A great home away from home centrally located in Kyoto. - Great location, very central to everything (bus, food, train, etc). Great space: could accommodate many people. Coffee and tea were great as well, and laundry room was beneficial and functioned properly. Very cool house design: accessible in various ways. Great air conditioner in the bedrooms. House overall was well equipped with kitchenware, TV, and high speed internet. The staff was incredibly accommodating as well, and very flexible with our hectic schedule. We found a cockroach on the second day and had to trap it under a bowl, which was unfortunate. Drying tree could’ve been larger but worked fine either way. The air conditioner didn’t seem to work in the main foyer of the house and was weak in the living room. It would’ve been nice to have more comfortable seating in the living room for TV viewing.
- Almuhanna (9/5): Superb -
