Guest Reviews
- Simone (4/5): - First and foremost this review is not a reflection of the staff. The landlady there is extremely friendly and approachable but I must be honest with my review.
I booked and paid for a room with en-suite. And paid extra for breakfast only to arrive to a shared bathroom and no restaurant or breakfast on site. The only option for dinner and food was the nearest garage that has a small Asda attached to it.
I was here for work and the area is remote and I have no car so not being able to eat on site was extremely frustrating.
The first night there was a pub quiz which was so loud my door was shaking, the door itself wasn’t very secure and as a solo female I didn’t feel all that safe to be honest.
Again, great staff but they need to update what they offer as it’s incorrect.
- Lynda (4/5): - We had booked our stay over a year before our visit, based on excellent reviews. We booked bed and breakfast for two nights. On arrival we were told that the property was under caretaker management and there was no longer a chef or any food available. The reviews on the quality of the meals was a key factor in making our booking in the first place. We were not offered any sort of discount or compensation for the breakfast that had been included in the price of our booking. Given we were in Devon for a wedding, our time was too limited to find alternative accommodation.
- Ming Yan (8/5): - Close to the places where we were visiting. Appreciate the effort to try to keep the room comfy. It was actually clean. I understand that bedsheets and pillow cases are not always changed after each stay but the previous customer was very stinky and left strong smells on the bed sheet and pillow case. I do not blame the inn but it did ruined our comfortable feeling to the room. There’s no breakfast served as stated in the package but we didn’t mind. Expedia might need to correct this.
- Chris (10/5): - New land lady only been in 6 weeks and bringing in good ideas.
Clean tidy and did what it said in the advert
No breakfast though that was advertised in advert
- James (6/5): Dissapointing - Apparently the pub changed hands 2 weeks ago and a few teething problems were evident which the lady who greeted us did her best to rectify which was nice but still a bit dissapointed with our stay. The wifi did not work but we have unlimited data so not a big problem. The first room we were given had a dedicated bathroom across the hall .. but had a broken bed so we were moved to a second room - the mattress in that room was super soft and a little uncomfortable but not a big problem though the “ensuite” bathroom was extremely small and the door handle was broken. We asked to borrow an iron - there wasn’t one in the property so the lady was good enough to get one from the local Tesco so that was really nice of her. There was no sign of any breakfast on either of the two mornings of our stay (though we had booked bed and breakfast) and the pub was closed before 10:30 on both nights of our stay (mid week). The bedroom was clean and airy. So in summary a little dissapointing
- Trevor (4/5): - Years of lack of investment are very evident in the property and a recent change of management meant we were offered 4 free drinks vouchers to somehow compensate that they now couldn't offer breakfast paid for.
The first nights sleep was shocking, because, as we realised in the morning, someone (and that's the polite version) had put the mattress upside down, so we were sleeping on the underside on a mattress that shouldn't be flipped but only spun top-to-bottom! Quite unbelievable! (we flipped the mattress back to the correct position and remade the bed of course!)
The fire door upstairs was jammed open and one downstairs not closed. The kettle cord was too short to plug in so had to be put on the floor to boil!
Not enough room in the en-suite to hang towels for 2 people (hook on door removed) and no toilet roll holder on the wall and no room for a floor-based system; the bathroom door handle was also coming off with all four screws losing their grip of the wooden door.
The shower head holder was loose, and the handle to the shower sliding door only had one of two securing points fixed - one was missing.
This was all a real shame, I lived in Malborough in my youth and wanted to stay there and put money back into the community, as tourism really is one of few incomes other than farming and fishing etc typical of more remote rural areas.
On a positive, the room was clean.
- David (4/5): Rooms need heating and TLC - Really liked the new landlords, but the room (en suite) was FREEZING cold --heating did not work--- and is not as pictured: no comfy chair (it was removed by previous landlord), no sofa bed as in the listing. The 2nd room I stayed in had a broken bed frame, so the mattress had sunk...also, No tennis court! Somebody needs to update the pictures, info on this site!! Food was good and a decent country pub, near Salcombe.
- Michael (6/5): - Great spot, friendly service, sadly however tea coffee water wasn't topped up during our 3 night stay (we were only given one days supply). Also a shame that we couldn't used the bar one night as they were hosting a wedding and next night (Sunday) they were closed for the evening.
- Susan (10/5): Superb find - This was a superb find. Lovey friendly hosts, staff & locals. Food excellent, all comforts provided, can’t rate it highly enough.
- Susan (8/5): - We thought the staff were so kind and friendly especially the owners Sham and Glynn
- Colin (8/5): - Nice pub in a lovely area.

- Neil (10/5): - Spent a couple of nights here to explore the surrounding area. Great staff, excellent breakfast!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great room and breakfast. Excellent hosts. - We stayed for 3 nights at the Old Inn and it was excellent. The room was spacious and comfortable and the shower was excellent. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic. The hosts, Shan and Glyn, could not have been more pleasant and helpful. We highly recommend staying at The Old Inn.
- Keith (8/5): - A village pub that needs a little maintenance and would benefit from an update but is good value. Just 3 rooms, one with en suite and two with private bathrooms across corridor. Hosts very friendly and breakfast good and varied particularly given the price. Car park. Situated halfway between Salcombe and Hope Cove so car needed by most.
- Michaela (10/5): - Fabulous friendly hosts and staff, locals were really helpful too, an absolute gem of a place, will definitely be going back.
- Linda (8/5): Great location - Great location. Cleanliness, service, food, and welcome were excellent, however the en-suite was too small and a bit ‘tired’. Overall, a good stay.
- Samantha (10/5): - We stayed here over the weekend with our children in a family room, I was a bit unsure as there was a lot of people on the Friday night as a busy pub but it wasn’t too bad. The room itself was lovely, super clean and a good size for what we needed. The breakfast was amazing and the staff we meet were so lovely along with owner. Would definitely recommend this and it was a lovely area with a convince shop across the road.
- Alison (10/5): - We had a lovely 2 night stay at The Old Inn in Malborough. Our room was comfortable, clean and quiet and had everything we needed. Staff were warm and friendly. Breakfast was great, offering fresh fruit and croissants as well as hot food. We enjoyed walking around the attractive village and we also enjoyed the walk down to Salcome.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our 5night stay at The Old Inn was lovely, the room & bathroom were clean & comfortable & the breakfasts were incredible (the best we've eaten)! Thanks for looking after us so well Shan & Glyn. We really enjoyed our stay & wouldn't hesitate to come back & use The Old Inn as a base to explore more of the beautiful surroundings.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Okay stay for couple of nights - The bed we slept in needs to be changed to a new one springs are coming through and very uncomfortable also pillows need changing there was a dusty smell maybe a a diffuser would be handy bed needs new bedding and towels looking old and tired otherwise everything else was ok the breakfast was best ever and their evening meals you could not fault and the hosts were very friendly.
- Claire (10/5): - Absolutely brilliant hosts, the breakfast was also amazing
- Dean (10/5): Lovely B&B - We really enjoyed our short break in Devon, The Old Inn was a perfect location for us. The room was clean, bright, and delightful, the staff on site were all fantastically accommodating; they managed to squeeze us in for dinner on the first night and it was delicious.
Breakfast every morning was superb, would definitely go again!
- Leslie (10/5): Excellent service and food - We were made to feel extremely welcome. The service and food was excellent. No complaints - we'll be back!
- D J (10/5): A fine Winter break - This is a ‘locals’ pub that welcomes visitors. We had a wonderful stay. Quality, value, lovely owners and good food too. Perfect for a short break in the South Hams and an excellent centre for walking.
- roy (10/5): the old inn marlborough - our stay was excellent. the hosts and staff are very helpful and friendly. the food was excellent the room was very clean aand comfortable. all in all a great place to stay.

Our room was very clean and quiet and lovely touches of fresh cookies, milk and bottles of water each day was a lovely touch. The breakfasts were delicious and plenty of choice. All Covid rules adhered to. We also ate there a couple of evenings and the meals were fabulous. We will return. Thankyou.

- Jason (10/5): Absolute Devonian gem - The Old inn hits all the marks! Good size clean room, Comfortable bed, great shower, very quiet, smiley faces, great food, super breakfast, perfect location, close enough to the action to enjoy it and just the right distance away to stay relaxed! As a well traveled couple, it is seldom you happen upon a gem like this. It's a must visit!
- Hamish (10/5): - Needed a bed for the night last minute. Lovely pub in a lovely village. The room was perfect for us and a short drive to Salcombe where we were meeting friends. The landlady was incredibly hospitable and had no issue with us arriving quite late for our check in. The room was tidy and comfy and the breakfast in the morning was delicious. We will definitely be coming back! Thank you!
- howard (8/5): Welcoming, well appointed, excellent food. - Lovely pub atmosphere, plenty of space inside even with social distancing, some of the outside tables are in the car park but there are two or three tables in a small courtyard.
Our room was very clean and tidy and well appointed as was our bathroom which was not en suite but just across a small landing. Very welcoming owners and staff and the food was excellent especially the breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent hosts and a great place to stay
Food was really good breakfast and evening meal can’t fault it lovely time
- Mark (10/5): - Lovely old pub, very friendly owners. Great breakfast.
- Andrew (10/5): - We were made to feel very welcome throughout our stay. The pub is well located for those who like to leave the car in the pub car park and walk to the beautiful Dorset coves and beaches that are within a couple of miles. We had a great meal in the pub one night and there’s a lot of choice for breakfast and plenty to eat.
- Joanne (10/5): Lovey place to stay in a pretty little village - We stayed at The Old Inn, as we hadn't been able to find availability within Salcombe itself, and we were so glad we did. Malborough is a lovely little village with thatched roof cottages and a pretty little church. Although not much else in the village, it was a nice base and we were able to walk into Salcombe in around 40 minutes. After having had a few beers! we decided on a cab back, which cost around £12.
The owners of the Old Inn were very welcoming and our room was spacious, bright and fresh. Breakfast was lovely and plentiful.
We would be more than happy to stay here again.
- CP (8/5): - Friendly hospitality, well located for all the local towns and beaches and a lovely breakfast.
- Andrew (10/5): Great place in Marlborough nr Salcombe - Great stay again - I can recommend the Pie & Pint night!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff are great. Very helpful. All perfect for what I needed. No hesitation to recommend. Thanks
- Francesca (10/5): - The accommodation is quite basic and your bathroom is not in your room but across the hall, but everything you need is there, clean and comfortable. Cannot fault the staff at all, friendly and welcoming! The breakfast for us was a real highlight, made to order, fresh and delicious!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean comfortable room, great breakfasy and service only one niggle private bathroom is across hall other than that great stay
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Pleasant propiortors. Great choice of breakfasts and generous portions. Nice evening meals and all freshly cooked. Nice location. All good value. Recommended.
- Peter (8/5): Would recommend The Old Inn - Hosts were genial, room very clean and we enjoyed an evening meal at The Old Inn on each night of our 3 night stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice room, tasty breakfast. Bedroom lighting slightly unbalanced. Needs a second bed table lamp.
- Claire (10/5): Location - great staging point... - Lovely relaxed atmosphere! Very welcoming and helpful staff. Food was extremely good and homely. Great breakfast. Room very comfortable with special touches to feel at home. TV great and WiFi available. Close to Salcombe and Hope Cove with plenty of activities.
