Guest Reviews
- Stephen (8/5): - Hotel appearance,location away from congestion,friendly staff
- Ajeet (10/5): - The property is a very relaxing refuge for a traveller. The staff were very helpful and accommodating during my stay which is a call-out and a big part of the charm of the place. The rooms were as one would expect from an old world style establishment, a bit generous and functional. The grounds were pleasant place to relax.
- Sarah (10/5): - The Hotel Vajra was an oasis in the dusty streets of Kathmandu. It was close to everything, the food was good, and the staff were very welcoming. I would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Raymond (10/5): - Nothing bad to say! I just really enjoyed it!

- Denise (10/5): - A beautiful tranquil place
- Quentin (8/5): - The hotel is an oasis from the madness of the Kathmandu streets and traffic. It has lovely buildings, beautiful gardens and a calm aura. Highly recommended
- Anita (10/5): Space Calm & a Creative Atmosphere in the city! - This hotel is made for creatives and artists who want a quiet place to stay with spacious rooms, while also being in the heart of the city. Its a beautifully built hotel with some amazing wood carving, and a wonderful spacious feel while walking through the interiors especially the restaurant. The gardens and patio are beautiful with many seating areas. You won’t find flat screen tvs here but you will find a good writing desk and excellent wifi. The bathroom was clean but could do with a little interior design sparkle. The food was excellent, and the owner and all the other staff were very helpful and interesting to converse with.
- John (8/5): - Ther was no WiFi in the room
- James (10/5): - i have visited Hotel Vajra since 2013. It is one of the most reliably safe and restful places in Kathmandu and a great location point for wandering and exploration. It is western-friendly but very very local. Amazing rooftop vistas and meditation Pagoda. Highest recommendation!
- Deepa (8/5): - Architecture is very good
- Kevin (10/5): - The most peaceful hotel in the Kathmandu valley. Beautiful architecture and grounds. Very friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The natural gardens, the polite attentive staff and yoga room!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Hotel Vajras is the most restful and quiet hotel in the area. i have visited Hotel Vajra since 2013 and every time i do, i find the staff is super friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and modest, and the grounds are impeccable. Though it is a relatively recent construction, the attention to cultural accuracy in the details and styling feels authentic. There is ample space on ground for impromptu meetings, a well-appointed theater space, an amazing roof-top meditation room, and a library of ancient nepali texts. Extremely reasonable rates!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A beautiful place but limited upkeep and it was cold in the room. Staff is wonderful and very responsive in trying to help make stay more comfortable.
- Monica (10/5): Favorite hotel in Kathmandu - It’s a wonder Heritage hotel with a beautiful garden and excellent staff
Very reasonable price and a rare find.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I like the traditional but modernized Nepalse building style of the hotel building. The on-site restaurant is very convenient and provides good food at any time. The hotel is outside of Thamel in 10 minutes walking distance, so does Swajambu, the Monkey Temple. Staying there feels like Nepal and a safe and quiet retreat at the same time.
- Dr.Joan (10/5): - We've stayed there each visit to NEPAL for the paste 5 years. we love the growth and green around surrounding uo,
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Veel ruimte en rustige tuin...."....................
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful traditional hotel in the best part of town, amazing garden, friendly staff....would come again and again :)
- Barbara (10/5): - A wonderful old hotel full of personality and charm. The gardens are a delight and the old wood and Tibetan carpets a pleasure to live with.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Traditional Tibetan-style with lovely garden - We love the Tibetan style of the Varja and have stayed there several times. It’s peaceful green setting is an oasis in dusty Kathmandu and the rooftop is lovely for views.
The staff are not highly attentive but are relaxed and pleasant. The Varja is an experience.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good for What it is. - The hotel is rather quaint and has potential but it is just a bit out of the centre. Some people might not mind and although it is outside of the centre I didn't feel threatened or unsafe walking home at night and I am an elderly female.
- T (10/5): Heritage Hotel Oasis - Great ambiance heritage hotel and a real escape from the craziness of KTM.
- forjys (8/5): Unique quiet place, in the mist of chaos - This hotel is beautiful on the outside, and also on many places on the inside. There is a beautiful sense of architecture and old fashion Nepalese building of carved wood. The whole structure is made of brick, and inside are beautiful marble stone floors and stairs.
If you can, avoid room 501 (New wing) - it is located on the ground floor, it was dark, and smelly. The toilet smelled, and the bedding smelled of mildew. We obtained a room one floor above and that was satisfactorily clean, and it smelled fresh. In both room however the bedding was quite hard, both mattresses and pillows. Other than that it was a nice room.
Breakfast is not included, and unless you get the buffet it can be a bit chaotic. The personnel is doing its best, and it is amazing how they can manage to do the accounting for each room in a group context, considering the orders flying left and right!
Breakfast buffet is 750 Roupies, and unless you eat very very little, it is work paying for that than asking for individual plates (which the personnel will create at the Buffet itself!)
The personnel is doing its best, and we were grateful for that.
- Dom (8/5): Beautiful and central hotel in Kathmandu - This hotel was very nice and in a very good location. The staff was super kind. The highlight of this hotel is definitely the rooftop view!
I would definitely recommend this hotel. However, if you’re lookjng for more of a youth hostel experience where you get to meet a bunch of backpackers, I would go to Alobar1000.
- Reinhold (6/5): Hotel with a charming traditional Nepalese flair. - I staid at the Vajra hotel more than 10 times since the early 90ies. It hasn't changed much since. I like the traditional style and the atmosphere of the buildings and the garden. The bathrooms in the older main building deserve a little up-grade and modernization. The staff is very helpful. We came back a few days earlier than planned from our Kanchenjunga trek. We had decided to use the time and visit Chitwan National Park. But we needed one night to stay in Kathmandu. The hotel was fully booked and we didn't have a reservation; so, the management proposed to let us use the library for one night. We found that very accommodating. The restaurant serves a modestly priced, decent breakfast and reliably good meals for lunch and dinner. We will come back again.
- Sara (8/5): Vajra Hotel: the best of Kathmandu - Vajra is a wonderful old-style Kathmandu hotel. Simple, clean, friendly, with great access to sites and sounds of the city. No extra fancy amenities, but that is fine and the rates can't be beat.
- traveler (2/5): Advise no one book vajra - I do not like to remember the terrible bad time and experience I had.
- Mark (10/5): - Very nice - great service
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great value and quiet - The room with shared toilets/showers was small and cosy with nice windows. Excellent value for the price. Good views from the rooftop. Food and drink is expensive if you are on a budget, but there are options nearby and the main town area is only about 10-15 min walk away.
- Vicki (8/5): Decent nights sleep - Nice and quiet, but not close to Thamel.
- jacques (8/5): A peaceful place close the town - A nice and peaceful place. 1(mn from Thamel and Tchetrapati. Great garden !
- Paolo (10/5): Wonderful and peaceful! - AS always we had a wonderful stay at the Vajra. It is so good to get away from the chaos in Tamel and return to beautiful and peaceful Vajra. The staff was also very kind to us and upgraded our room at no extra cost and on or last day we could stay in the room until we left at 1730. We will always return to the the Vajra whenever we go to Kathmandu.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A little oasis - Hotel vajra seems like an oasis in the middle of hectic Kathmandu. It's within walking distance of Thamel.
- Ankit (8/5): Nice Hotel for the price. - Hotel is really nice for the price. Staff was very polite and courteous. Set up of the hotel gave the feeling of some vintage place, which was good.
However, problem with Nepal is that they have 11 hours of power-cut, this is major draw-back. However hotel staff do run their generators, but that is not suffice. Hope the problem of fuel and other shortage gets resolved by the government quickly, or else it might hamper the tourism drastically.
- Anita (8/5): problems faced - If you booked the hotel through a deal then the staff will create a problem regarding room prices. We booked standard double bed room through hotels.com from a deal at lower prices but when we reached we were told that since you paid lower amount of money so we will give you a single bedroom with less facilities. Although after a lot of argument we got a room with two single beds. Otherwise the hotel is good with very less people staying at it but its very far from the market places and the present situation is that if you are staying in it then you have to pay all your money in transit to taxis
- Anya (10/5): Best Hotel in Nepal - Beautiful hotel with best hospitality ever experienced. A true thespians paradise, great views amazing food. Got to visit their farmhouse in Nagarkhot another amazing experience. Will be visiting again. Ideal for anyone looking to rejuvenate and feel gratitude.
- MACIEJ (10/5): Stylish hotel at a prices for everyone. - We were given a free upgrade when we arrived from the economical room with shared shower to a room with bathroom attached. Given we were staying for 5 nights this was truly a wonderful gesture. The hotel is designed by a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright and it is a wonderful building with a roof top bar looking over the city and the mountains in the distance. There is also a stylish function room on the top, and a theatre which has shows every week.
While we did not use the inhouse restaurant, it again was a lovely romantic space with fantastic aromas spilling out into the hotel foyer throughout the day.
The situation being over the river a 10 minute walk from Thamel means that it is close enough to all the madness but far enough away for it to be nice and quiet.
It's true that the pigeons do roost on ledges above the windows but they were not intrusive at all and we slept very well every night there.
The reception staff were even kind enough to do some printing for us at no charge.
Quite simply we loved the hotel and will most certainly choose it again next time we stay.
Thanks to all the staff who made our last few days in Nepal great.
- Deborah (10/5): Gorgeous Architecture and Great Service - Beautiful Newari-style hotel in a quiet (for Kathmandu) neighborhood between Thamel and the Swayambhu Temple. Second time staying here, and the sweet staff remembered me from last year. Not fancy in a modern Hyatt-type way for those who require constant air conditioning or elevators in their accommodations, but gorgeous wood work, lovely nooks to hide and read, and incredible charm throughout the grounds. Photos online don't do it justice; it's an amazing deal for the money.
