Guest Reviews
- Z7129IVchristinem (8/5): Somerset staff exemplary and location the best. - Somerset is a great location in terms of access to everything being roughly half way between Ned's beach and the Lagoon with all the water based tour companies, bike hire and places to eat and drink nearby
The room we had was up the back, very clean and had everything we needed
Gardens, BBQ's and laundry all in good nick
We had a flight cancellation and the staff knew all about it and when our rescheduled flight was also cancelled and we were put on another earlier flight Gae came and found us at the museum so we'd know and not miss getting to the airport.
I also left my jacket in the transit lounge and she made another trip out to the airport to give it to me. Very impressed at this level of service, thankyou
LHI is a very beautiful place and well worth the costs involved if you love nature above and below the water and the simplicity of just walking and cycling everywhere. If you need a lift there is also one available too.
- 339melindah (10/5): Late Winter Visit - We just spent 9 nights in Hibiscus 10 apartment at Somerset. Our apartment had a perfect winter sun aspect for afternoons on the deck / balcony area enjoying a coffee and reviewing the day’s adventures. The island is sleepy this time of year but Gai and her team are in the know about what is open and will always help to point you in the right direction for a dinner booking or island activity.
We travelled with a 10yr old and were there for lots of water and snorkelling adventures and the island didn’t disappoint - crystal clear water and an abundance of sea life to admire on both sides of the island. Water temps were great for the time of year. Because of the convenient location of the apartments a warm shower after a long snorkel session is never far away!
We made the most of the onsite bbqs which are kept in excellent condition and maintained daily.
Highly recommend visiting the island at this time of year - more often than not you can have the beaches and walking tracks all to yourself and the electric blankets on the beds make for a very cosy night’s sleep after a day of adventures!
Tip for traveling with kiddos - the transit lounge has a small library of dvds that you can borrow for use in your room if you happen to have a rainy hour or 2 to fill!
- Wswrbb2018 (10/5): Truly an oasis - This place is an oasis situated in paradise. All the staff are so warm caring and friendly so willing to help in every way they can. The accommodation was spacious and immaculate. They even provide dvds, games, books etc located in the transit lounge which is always open. There are modern bbqs located for guest use on the property. They are willing each evening to drive you to any eatery (99% of the eateries will drive you home afterwards). The place is located within easy walking distance of the islands two main beaches. There are plentiful places to leave your pushbike which is the main means of transport on the island. Only slight downfall is the accommodation doesn’t have ceiling fans or aircon but our cottage had a very large bedroom window which allowed for air circulation. Cannot recommend this place any higher, if you’re so inclined put this place on your bucket list. You will forever be thankful you did.
- Philip_and_Anne (10/5): Very close to two beaches - First of all, Lord Howe Island is one of the most beautiful destinations we have ever encountered, and the Somerset Apartments were a wonderful place to stay while enjoying the island. We visited the museum, and went scuba diving, bird watching, and hiking. The apartments are basic, and ours had a small kitchenette with a microwave and refrigerator, which allowed us to cook small meals. There is homemade ice-cream at the post office, and a food truck at Ned's beach when we were there. The apartments are very conveniently located, midway and a short walk to both Ned's and Lagoon beaches. There is only one restaurant nearby, but there are two small grocery stores that had either burgers or some small pre-made meals for the microwave. For slightly more distant restaurants, a shuttle for pickup can be arranged. Sometimes the hot water was hit or miss, but otherwise we did not encounter any problems. The doors do not lock from the outside, which is a strange concept for us since we are long term urban dwellers, but we were assured our belongings would be safe when we were away. We had to cancel our first night because the weather delayed our plane, but we were aware of the 8 week cancellation policy, and the management provided us a letter for reimbursement from our travel insurance. We hope one day we can go back!
- 30MikeW30 (2/5): Don’t cancel or they steal your money - Be very careful - if you have to cancel like I did due to a medical emergency with a month to go, they steal all your money paid up front; no refunds, not even a credit for future use.
As it’s really hard to even get a booking on the island, you know they would have rented it to someone else straight away, so they get paid twice for the same stay.
Aaarrrgh! Never again. Shame on you.

- matthewsB3634GS (8/5): Very laid-back, easy living - The lodge is composed of several scattered bungalow-like blocks nestled among the trees. Everything you might need is there: bed, bathroom (hot and cold running water), kitchenette with gas stove, sink, fridge and microwave oven, small TV with a small range of mainland channels, heating and air conditioning, furniture, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery.
The rooms aren't locked, as thieves wouldn't get far.
The staff are helpful and friendly. There are 3 guest laundries ($3) on site.
Only a half-minute bike ride to the village centre (such as it is).
Very peaceful, very pleasant.
- chrishayward (10/5): Central To Everything On The Island - Our accommodation was clean and the facilities that we needed. It's an easy walk to Ned's Beach, the shops and restaurants. Lovely garden's & places to park your bikes. With pick-up and drop off airport bus.
- 882jamesl (6/5): Over Rated - Stayed at the Frangi Panni (14 - 21 Oct) units right up the back of the complex. Bathroom/Toilet set up was woefull. Wash Basin inadequate and too close to the toilet.
I informed the person running the complex on at least 3 occasions during our 7 day stay that there was a sewerage smell around the units which came and went at various times of the day. This smell invaded the unit. Very off putting indeed. Problem was not fixed while we were there.
- lisacT9134EY (10/5): Exceptional service - What a wonderful team of staff, always there to assist anyway possible. Always optimistic when the weather changes. Central location, within walking distance to the lagoon and restaurants. Provide a shuttle for all patrons to your dining location. Rooms clean, adequate and very comfortable. Would highly recommend staying there. Thanks Gay for looking after us.
- Scmurray (10/5): Perfect place to stay and enjoy Lord Howe Island - Simple accommodation but clean and good facilities and really all you need. We had a room in Frangipanni area which were a bit dark compared to those in Hibiscus. Excellent staff - friendly and attentive . Good hot showers and comfy bed. Close to restaurants , shops and bars as well as lagoon and Ned’s beach
- oldtrampers (10/5): Bliss - Whilst it’s not the most modern accomodation it was totally comfortable, very clean, very spacious and the location was really convenient to beaches and cafes. The bathroom was relatively new. The hosts are amazing, nothing was a problem. There is a choice of outdoor bbq areas and tables which we used. They collect and deliver you to the airport and happily drop you off at restaurants. We would happily return.
- Kane_Boardman (10/5): All the comforts of an AustraliaN holiday on a tropical island paradise - Somerset Apartments is in a great location, a short walk or bike ride from the lagoon and Ned’s Beach. Set in a grove of Kentsia palms each unit has everything you need for a comfortable stay. I liked the day room - where you can make a snack, relax or have a shower after you check out but before your flight
- Victorianew (8/5): Peaceful retreat - My husband and I stayed one week at Somerset apartments early July, 2022. We had the Hibiscus room which was on the corner of a block of apartments and heaps of natural light. We found the apartment warm in the evenings when the rain drifted in. The water pressure in the shower was perfect. We picked Somerset based on location and reviews. We would definitely look at staying in Somerset again if we have the good fortune of visiting LHI again. It's in easy walking distance of Ned's beach and good restaurants and shops down the other end of the road. As we were in low season there was hardly any traffic, walkers or cars, on the main road in front of Somerset and we totally forgot the road was so close. The room had two umbrellas, two backpacks, plastic containers and water bottles. These are a welcome addition when you can't pack a whole heap of hiking stuff because of the flight weight limits. I acknowledge some reviews comment on hearing noise from next door apartments. We only noticed this when they had a bathroom fan on otherwise we couldn't hear much else. Gai is a wonderful host who gave us heaps of good local advice and tips to make the most of our stay on the island. We really couldn't have asked for much more as we were so active during the day the room was perfect to come back to. We could boil eggs and make dinner with the equipment provided in the kitchenette. So in summary, we would look to stay here again. Oh and WiFi included.
- sharonkL3995VV (8/5): Great place in a good position .Well fitted villas with all you need to be independent , bbq areas on sites - Great accomodation. central to everything by walk or bikes . Free bus drop off to restaurant of choice each evening . Spacious clean and well equipped villas with lovely verandahs surrounded by lush well maintained gardens
Clean towels daily
- 29carral (10/5): Go back in time , in the best possible way - Relaxing, super clean and low key Island living. Great location and vibe. This is like going back in time, in the best possible way. It’s quiet and still here, just the birds and trees around you. Forget luxury, just enjoy good old fashioned accommodation on this amazing island
- Frances (8/5): Comfortable and convenient - Good accommodation; spacious apartments with self-catering facilities. Perfect for a family holiday. Easy walk to shops, bar and restaurant and close to beach.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Property is centrally located. The environment is in keeping with the island. Staff were always helpful.
- Ilovebarbeach (8/5): LHI is divine - Somerset apartments are in the heart of the CBD - ir near Thompson's store and the bar and the only restaurant that you will find a spare table - the Anchorage. The apartments are very clean and well serviced. There is most everything you need. Gaye who runs the show is very laid back and very efficient.
NOTE - do not ask for cabin 2 or 3 - so closed in with no view or sunshine. We were newbies so ended up in 2.
- JElliot32 (10/5): A little piece of paradise - Lord Howe Island is akin to a piece of paradise, and we found Somerset apartments an ideal place to spend a week and a bit here. The location is very central, the operators helpful and friendly, our apartment was plenty roomy for two, and the gardens a tropical delight. (Adding to the charm were the woodhens and rails - and to a lesser extent the blackbirds - that frequented the gardens.) The rooms are modestly appointed but everything we needed was provided. We didn't come to LHI for 5-star luxury. BBQ facilities were uncrowded and cleaned daily. Wifi from our room was patchy but it was always excellent from the transit room and it seemed to be fine from many of the other apartments. Would very happily return.
- KerryM69 (6/5): Comfortable but average apartments - We recently stayed for 8 nights at Somerset Apartments. While very average and minimally furnished with basic furniture our apartment was comfortable. Be aware that this is an older style of accommodation and as such walls between apartments are very thin meaning we could clearly hear our neighbours walking through the adjoining apartment, opening and closing the sliding bathroom door and front screen door, the exhaust fan attached to the light in the bathroom and the toilet flushing. This may have been ok if our neighbours werent up using the bathroom, opening and closing the door and turning the light on at 2.30 and 3.30am on a number of mornings. Gardens are lovely. Apartments are clean. Apartments are in a great location just up the road from a general store, restaurant, Lagoon beach and the start of some walking tracks.
- Tom (8/5): Gréât location - Gréât location and beautiful lush gardens make Somerset a great base for your LHI stay. Rooms are basic and bathroom small, but you don’t come to LHI to stay in your room! Large balcony attached to our room was great feature. Staff all friendly & helpful. Overall great value for money on LHI & would stay again.
- Yvonne (8/5): Very comfortable, excellent location - Very spacious rooms, very comfortable, excellent central location
- CorinneL242 (8/5): Wonderful stay - Husband and I stayed in a one bedroom apartment in November. Couldn't praise the friendly staff enough for their helpfulness. Nothing was a problem, transport to eateries at night was reliable. Position of cottages ideal - close to everything with very relaxed atmosphere. Although self contained, my only 'ask' would be a hot plate and a pan or two if we wanted to cook and eat at 'home' rather than going out every night. Thank you Gai for a wonderful stay - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your property and hopefully will be able to stay there next time we visit.
- Joanna (10/5): - Somerset Apartments are brilliantly located midway between Ned's Beach and the Lagoon/CBD area. Beautiful gardens, lots of BBQ areas and bike racks on site, as well as a laundry building.
The apartments are pretty basic but have everything you need. They are scrupulously clean and well maintained, but could do with a bit of a refresh. The Wi-Fi situation is initially a bit irksome, but that is an island wide issue and part of the charm of Lord Howe - an enforced digital detox. You can get coverage at the Transit Lounge at Somerset, so not too bad.
Gai and her team are extremely accommodating and run nightly shuttle buses to take guests to the various restaurants located a little way away from the apartments. They also pick up and drop off at the airport.
Lord Howe exceeded our expectations. The people living there are extremely kind and within a few days of arriving, we noticed ourselves beginning to adapt to island life and saying good morning to everyone we passed and waving at strangers on bikes and in cars, as is the island custom.
The mantra "kindness begets kindness" is highly evident there and we found ourselves inviting strangers to have dinner with us or share a drink and had some of the best evenings we can remember.
Snorkelling and hiking are sublime and we were lucky enough to see a couple of sharks as well as some of the most laid back turtles and fish on the planet.
Amazing place. Definitely go.
- DiveBuddy1955 (10/5): Superb accommodation in paradise - Our hosts Steve, Grace, Jess and Gina were fantastic - they had thought of everything we might need and provided it - for the welcome hamper to the "emergencies" in the bathroom - such a delightful and quiet paradise - we will be back - Michael & Louisa
- Karen (10/5): Position, position, position - The location is the best thing about this property - half way between the lagoon & Ned's Beach - and close to the main shops. Nice & level here too as there are plenty of hills on the island.
The rooms are all very private and hidden in lush tropical gardens. The room was very comfortable and came with lots of thoughtful extras like backpacks, water bottles & golf umbrellas.
Lots of BBQs scattered around the property, plus quite a few laundry's. Also a main transit lounge with plenty of books to swap and lots of tourist info.
Office kindly lent us a fan, torches and clothes airer. Plus a courtesy bus runs every night and will drop you at whichever restaurant you want to eat at (the restaurants then drop you home).
Will definitely stay here again.
- Maria (8/5): - great location - easy to walk everywhere - management helpful
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent location. Close to the shops, restaurants and beach. The property is very clean. Staff are friendly and helpful.
- Felicity/Carmen (8/5): - Great situation, close to everything. Walk to Ned's Beach, Post Office and Thompson's store. Very clean apartment, well equipped kitchen. Helpful, friendly staff. Even when I left my precious Kentia palm back in my room after I had been dropped off at the airport, no trouble to go back and collect it for me. I was most grateful for that. I would stay there again when I go back for another relaxing and full of adventure week.
- Jason (10/5): - Excellent place to stay on Lord Howe Island. Very convenient location to walk to shops and restaurants and very friendly staff.
- Marilyn (10/5): Spectacular Lord Howe - Our stay at Somerset was great everything you could need. Very close to all the amenities and fabulous beches. Wish we could have stayed longer
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly, helpful staff. Perfect location on Ned’s Road, between the Lagoon and Ned’s Beach. Clean, well stocked apartment. Small problems: some sewage smell on first day only, poor tv reception. Overall: it was great accommodation on a wonderful island to visit. Highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A good location close to Neds Beach and to local Cafes. Lovely grounds and mostly out of the wind. Apartments clean and tidy and loved the comfy cane arm chairs
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It's on Lord Howe Island. What's not to like? It was cool in the rooms, but then it was the coldest time of year.
- David (8/5): - Friendly and helpful staff, location was perfect and accommodation very comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Being picked up at the airport and assisted when our baggage didn't arrive was very nice .We loved the location of the property ,being central to both Neds beach & the lagoon beach. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Accommodation is comfortable & clean with a relatively new bathroom. The unit / apartment is much better than what the Website pictures show.
With checkout being a standard 10.00 a.m it was nice to have an available shower in the transit lounge, which we used after snorkelling between checkout time and being driven back to the airport.
Thanks for a wonderful holiday.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Well located in lush surroundings, easy walk to the wonderful Anchorage cafe, general store, museum and glass bottom boat trips. No mobile phone network and unstable wifi so a great opportunity to enjoy amazing scenery and foreshore walks. Balcony ideal for a quiet coffee or wine o'clock.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Comfortable, functional and perfect location close to all the main beaches and services
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location. Very obliging staff.
Some ceiling fans would help us mainlanders in the afternoon having a post dive snooze!
- Jann (10/5): - Excellent accommodation .Great location halfway between Ned's beach and Lagoon.
- DB32 (6/5): Upgraded unit - Having never been to Lord Howe Island we had no idea what to expect. Pleasantly surprised by the spacious gardens, well kept grounds and accommodation. The photo for the advert does not give a good indication of accommodation on offer. Located walking distances to beaches, store, hall for Wednesday night historical movie night and Sunday market day, cafe, post and close to wharf, dive centre and start of hikes.
- Sue (8/5): Tropical setting - This apartment was suitably located between the lagoon and Ned’s beach. It was protected from the ever present winds. It was relatively flat to walk or cycle to from Lagoon Rd.
- Frangipani4 (10/5): Ideal location - unique setting - great experience - We have long thought about going to Lord Howe Island, and much earlier this year our forward-looking research suggested the Somerset Apartments as the right place at the right price - and it proved an excellent choice, meeting and exceeding all our expectations. From when we were picked up at the airport to when we were taken back there at the end of our stay, the facilities and support services plus excellent information about the island and its features and opportunities, underpinned all aspects of a great holiday. The well-designed and very well equipped and comfortably furnished apartments are spaces out in small groups within surrounding lush gardens of sub-tropical palms and flowering shrubs where the loudest sounds are the songs of many and varied birds. Relaxed. Uncommercialised. Peaceful. Perfect.
- Daz (10/5): Beautiful location. - Great place to stay. Lord Howe did not disappoint. We enjoyed our stay even though it was a little cool in the evening but it was winter. Definitely go again
- onenightinbangc (10/5): - Check in was easy. Staff polite. As there are hardly any cars on the island the staff arrange for transfers to hotels/restaurants which was great
- Mariana (10/5): A pleasant stay in beautiful surrounds - These apartments are comfortable, spacey and beautifully set in a lovely garden, close to the local "CBD", Post Office, shops and tour operators in the main street.
Manager Gai and her cheerful team will welcome you to your holiday home as a guest. You will find flowers in your rooms, all amenities needed for your stay, a bbq in the garden and a few coffee shops and restaurants nearby.
Enjoy!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great value - Great value. Very clean. Recently renovated. Friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very comfortable, conveniently located accommodation
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good basic accomodation in paradise that is LHI. - Great position between ‘down town’ and Ned’s beach. Not serviced, but the room was very clean when we got there, and towels changed when needed. Staff very friendly, like everyone else on the island. Good laundry facilities, just don’t forget your $1 coins. Apartment had lots of room and comfortable beds, though bathroom is a little small. Basic facilities in room for cooking and lots of bbq areas outside. Would definitely recommend and consider staying here again.
- Owen (10/5): Great stay - Hopefully we will return. Great views, great hosts, great experiences...climbed Mt Gower-never to be forgotten.
- Helen (10/5): Great place central to everything. - We spent 12 days here and enjoyed wonderful weather and very caring staff.
- Chris (8/5): Comfortable unit in a lush garden. - The superior one bedroom unit was set in a lush garden and quite comfortable. It is in a good location between Neds Beach and the lagoon. There is a shop and a good cafe/restaurant nearby. The staff were very helpful and friendly. A good stay.
- Debbie (10/5): Very nice apartments close to everything. - Stayed here for 14 nights and was very happy with the accommodation. Close to the town centre and most of the islands facilities. Very friendly staff.
- Ros (10/5): Great location! - Comfortable, clean accommodation. Great central location within easy walking distance from Neds beach, Lagoon beach, Anchorage restaurant and Thompson's store.
- Linda (8/5): Great location and well run premises. - We were greeted at the airport and given a tour of the island on our way to our accommodation by our friendly driver. Our accommodation was spotless and comfortable with plenty of towels and other comforts should we need them,. The position of Somerset Apts is one of the best on the island within close walking distance to the main "hub" and also Ned's beach. We didn't hire bikes and found walking to other beaches and sights easy. Each evening we were transported to our chosen venue for dinner and driven back by our dinner hosts.
We had a lovely relaxing time and found our Somerset to be all we had hopped for.
- Sian (8/5): Mid-winter stay - We booked via Wotif with this last available accommodation. It turned out to be wonderful and we had a very happy couple of weeks staying in Frangipani 7 here. Staff are generally very friendly and helpful and small suggestions about path lights being out in some spots were dealt with next day. Cleanliness is terrific, the unit was private and larger than we thought plus, although the ensuite bathroom was not wide, it was a good length and sufficient. Somerset is very close to Thompson's store, Anchorage restaurant, bike hire and also to Ned's Beach. Love that accommodation and restaurants on the island look after getting visitors too and from evening dining - it makes it very easy and somewhat entertaining too. Mid-winter some activities and restaurants are closed, but it didn't stop us from having a top stay on the island. Electric blankets on the queen and single beds kept us warm at night. The unit had a good size balcony overlooking a tropical palm garden. No mobile phone reception is available, but there is wifi access and pay as you go internet available. Friendly Somerset staff picked us up and dropped us back to the airport. We would happily stay here again! Thanks for a fabulous holiday.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Delightful staff and very fair when we were delayed due to Qantas flight cancellations.
- Gracy (10/5): Nice hotel near beaches and shops - It was a great place to stay. Love Lord Howe Island. Gorgeous place, friendly, relaxed place.
- Trevor (10/5): Lovely relaxing place - The apartment was bigger than we expected, and well equipped for cooking (microwave and 2 gas rings, bbq under cover round the corner). All very clean. Quiet location with a great setting in amongst the rainforest. The staff were really friendly and helpful especially for organising restaurant dinner bookings, and driving us from/to the airport.
- Verified traveler (10/5): The perfect place to stay in paradise. - Somerset Apartments are centrally located, bright and airy, comfortable and couldn't want for more.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice hotel - No heater provided on arrival ...we were cold. First aid kit not updated , no band aids scissors broken which were needed but otherwise very comfortable but we would not revisit.
- liz (10/5): Very clean, friendly staff, good location - Just stayed here for four nights - booked here as it was the last place available at the (relatively late) time of booking.
Somerset was extremely good value for money - very clean, the staff were lovely and helpful, and the location was equidistant to lots of beaches and amenities. I'd stay here again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice hotel, central to everything we wanted. - Lovely place to visit, but we timed it wrong. The weather wasn't good stopping us from doing some of the tourist things. Enjoyable none the less. Next time we will know to take more of the foods we need.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Island Paradise - very pleasant stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Handy location to Beach and Lagoon - We loved the whole island and our experience was only marred by the lack of adequate cooling in our Hibiscus 10 Apartment. All rooms had a lovely outlook but in the hot conditions the lack of insulation and provision of only one portable fan was most inadequate. A second fan was kindly provided by office staff when requested
- Steve (8/5): Great location - The hotel is located between the main beaches and convenient for the shops and one restaurant. The accomodation is clean and well kept and the staff friendly, we really enjoyed our stay. Perfect with two children 11 and 14.
- Stephanie (8/5): Great Location - Somerset is ideally located between Neds beach and the shops. The apartments are comfortable, clean and set in beautiful tropical gardens. A great choice for couples or families.
- Helen (10/5): Perfect location with plenty of kitchen equipment - A great holiday on an idyllic island despite the rain. The good sized balcony outside the room was perfect for relaxing and drying wet clothes. Somerset Apartments met our needs exactly and the good selection of kitchen equipment and full sized fridge-freezer was a bonus. Kingfish cooks perfectly in 2 minutes in the sandwich maker!
- Paul (10/5): central location - Easy walking access to beaches, water activities departure points, restaurants(although free Somerset bus to restaurant of choice each night, and free restaurant bus return to accommodation post meal/drinks), walking tracks. Clean, spacious, private unit. Self-contained facilities good. Double bed mattress too hard for Princess. No mobile phones (excellent!). Ethernet cable internet available during Office hours or buy wi-fi at Museum.
Highly recommended holiday, including 9hr Mt Gower climb. Friendly locals, everyone says G'day/waves. No bogans, just relaxed, nice people.
- Kan (10/5): Excellent location and comfort - Close to Ned's beach, main centre shops and west lagoon. Just a walk away to the bike hire place. Very clean and comfortable place to stay.
