• Grete (5/5): The worst was 3,5% extra for card payment and paid eater bottles. Big nono. - It was really clean and there was wonderful breakfast (exept terrible coffee) - all points i give to this hotel because the clean and breakfast. I booked this hotel because of its high ratings and the fact that it advertised 24-hour service. I expected friendly and welcoming staff. When we arrived after a 36-hour journey, the gates were closed. I had to open them myself, walk along a narrow path into a dark courtyard, and knock on the door (there was no doorbell). The door was opened fairly quickly, but the owner appeared sleepy and unprepared. I had indicated in advance that I needed parking for a car. Parking is technically available, but it is located on a road barely the width of a car. I had to reposition the car several times because he was not satisfied with how I parked. In the end, my side mirror was almost touching the wall. Be careful when paying by credit card — they charge an additional 3.5% fee, which is not mentioned in the description. We arrived late at night and had no alternative, so we had to pay it. We were “kindly” shown the bottled water in the room — for an extra charge at a rather steep price. I also asked for a late check-out, but this was refused. In the morning, there was no sign of any cleaning staff anyway. This is a small house that does not really feel like a proper hotel. The rooms are dark and not bright and airy as shown in the promotional photos. I would not stay here again.

• JACKIE (2/5): Huge disappointment, worst place we had stayed in a month in Sri Lanka. - Nothing Attitude on 1st day, demanded our cash, then left us waiting downstairs in a unwelcoming lobby, room not ready, no explanation. Paid for the "better" room with balcony, not pleasant, paid far too much as not worth £59 per night. Tiny cups, asked for some cold milk to use for tea, told to go to shop. Not a problem in any other place we stayed. 1st morning breakfast no question as to what type of food, so were given Sri Lankan and western so wasted food. Only fruit was banana! Better 2nd morning. Nowhere nice to eat, stuck at a table behind a desk looking out at a car and a wall, no restaurant as advertised. The whole place is a mess not a hotel! Never saw any other guests. Room next door to ours felt like the people were in the room with us! A very strange place and not sure how previous marks were given. Moved out after 2 nights to a very pleasant small beachfront hotel much cheaper so lost money!
• Helen (9/5): Room for an overnight in Negombo - This is more of a bed & breakfast as opposed to a hotel but nonetheless, a good location for one night after landing in CMB airport (it’s not too far). It’s two roads back from the beach and there are various restaurants nearby. The room was simple, the bathroom somewhat dated but clean. The bed had a mosquito net, which was needed considering every time the door was opened, they would fly in. The room had a kettle and tiny cups. The owner was responsive via the message function on booking.com. Originally had asked them to organise a pick up from the airport but the price quoted was higher than others. Some observations: - There is a lack of soundproofing, so noise from outside or above or next door easily heard - The driveway is not wide enough for cars, only Tuk tuks or bikes.

• Lisa (9/5): A very nice welcome to Sri Lanka - It's a simple but nice hotel, the first stop of our trip. The family that runs it is super friendly, welcoming and helpful! We got a fruit juice when we arrived and they also made a delicious Sri Lankan breakfast in the morning. They also helped with any problems/ questions we had. The rooms are clean and have good AC, a mosquito net and a fridge. The bathroom looked a little bit older, but the water was hot and the water pressure was good! The hotel is good value for your money.

As camas são confortáveis, lençóis e fronhas limpíssimos, quarto de tamanho bom e casa de banho com água quente. A ventoinha é silenciosa e há também opção de ar-condicionado. O pequeno almoço é muito bom e em doses enormes. Espaço sossegado, sem ruído da estrada, ou da vizinhança. A relação qualidade-preço é excelente, considerando a localização do hotel. Trata-se de um hotel familiar, afectado pela tempestade de 23 de Novembro de 2025. A família está a reabilitar o espaço, que neste momento tem muitos móveis por todo o lado, tornando o espaço menos agradável. Excesso de mobília no quarto; inexistência de um espaço exterior adequado quer para convívio, quer para usufruto dos pequenos almoços.

• Vlad (4/5): a cheap but unconfortable hotel. would not reccomend. - Nothing special. the staff is indeed doing their best but the overall experience is not very good. The pictures are either photoshopped or done 5 years ago. The hotel is situated in the back of a yard, being semi moldy and full of mosquitos (no nets at any door or window). Hot water is available probably only when the sun shines and the overall cleanliness is shady. The beds are not confortable at all, while the bathrooms are super basic and sometimes full of ants.

La mujer nos trajo un zumo riquísimo nada màs llegar. Está bien para ir una noche de paso por el precio, pero nada más. El aire acondicionado funciona. Las instalaciones no estaban muy cuidadas, hay una puerta entre dos habitaciones que no es muy cómodo porque escuchas los ruidos de las personas de al lado. El baño no tenía buen olor, pero estoy segura que le pondrán remedio pronto.

The room was cleaned and well maintained also since I left early morning for a hiking host prepared a breakfast once I was back. The breakfast was tasty and had a few different items inside. Loved this place and will definitely come back. I was visiting that time when they had the heaviest rain in 30 days. Due to this the internet connection wasn’t good.

• Others (10/5): - Hotel Dorset is an absolute gem of a family-run business that truly captures the warmth and hospitality Sri Lanka is known for. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with a fresh watermelon juice — such a thoughtful touch after a long journey! My room was sparkling clean, spacious, and fully air-conditioned (and let me tell you, the Aircon was ice cold – I didn’t even need to touch my Panadol!). The bathroom was spotless and well-equipped, featuring both a shower and a bathtub, plus a small private balcony which would be perfect if you’re a smoker or just want to enjoy the evening breeze. The hosts went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. They even helped me organize a private cab to Kandy at a very reasonable price and pointed me to the best kottu roti spot in town – Jhonys, just 500m away. The beach is about an 800m walk, but honestly, I was happier staying here than right by the shore. Knowing that this lovely family has been running the hotel since 2001, surviving the 2004 tsunami and the COVID years, and still standing strong is a testament to their dedication and resilience. If you want genuine hospitality, clean comfort, and local recommendations straight from the heart — Hotel Dorset is where you should stay. ❤️

My room was large, very clean & comfortable with a wrap-around balcony that had a pleasant enough view over the neighbourhood. As others have mentioned, this is an old building and a humble establishment but very comfortable & well maintained nevertheless. Breakfast was great & filling, with plenty of delicious, home-made goodies. A bit removed from shops & restaurants - maybe 800metres or so, but still manageable.

The homemade breakfast was delicious (omelette, fruits and tea) and the hotel is in a great location. Really glad I chose to stay here. The room was quite hot even with the fan on and there were lots of mosquitoes and ants in the bathroom.

The location was just right for us. Quite a few mozzies near reception. They love me and will seek me out anywhere. Nothing else. It was as basic/fancy as we expected it to be.
• Koert (9/5): Superb - We stayed here only for a couple hourse in the night after our late arrival and early checkout. The owner was very friendly, even when we had to wake him up at 4:30 in the night when we arrived. We were lucky he checked our room after we got out and waiting for a taxi because we forgot a bag in the bathroom. So thank you for that! Room had no A/C and was older.
• Annette (8/5): Lovely family run hotel. Staff very friendly. Service very good. Upgraded to a - Good location for beach, restaurants and shops. Fantastic breakfast. Good wifi
• Ruwan (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely owners! Very helpfull. Great rooms!
• Alix (7/5): Overall great value - The staff was amazing, welcoming us with a fresh juice. They also helped us arranging a private driver very last minute for Anuradhapura. Really good breakfast. The bathroom smelled really bad and was so humid, really hard to take in for our first night in Sri Lanka. It would need a good refreshment.
