Guest Reviews
- Gerald (1/5): Place is tired and was not at all like the advertisment on the web Very unclean shower/ kitchen - The location was great, lots of bird song and very restful. We felt that on arrival the reception desk was not very welcoming .We booked and paid on line in advance for 3 nights in a double garden view room with en suite only to be told we needed to pay an extra $150 for this. The rubbish and spiders around the door way that we had to sweep up before entering. There was no such thing as a garden, it was just weeds. The kitchen was in very poor state of cleanliness, Oven and draws with utensils needed a good clean. The mold in and around the door and floor of the shower needed a good scrub. We would not recommend this place and we will not be back. It certainly was not value for money.
- Sharon (7/5): -
- Susan (9/5): - Location was good near alot of attractions 1and half each way there was something to do or see. Pet friendly unit. The water out of taps was brown rusty color had to buy water to use for cooking and drinking for a family of 4. Have mentioned to staff but never came to look just gave us a bottle of water.
- Elisa (10/5): -
- kate (4/5): Wouldn’t recommend. Wouldn’t go back. - I will say. The place looks relatively new in build. They have decent quality buildings and the beds are very comfortable. But that’s about it. The communication is so poor. And things are in dire need of repair and basic maintenance. Had originally booked one night shared room with friends but upon arriving asked if I could have my own room as I wanted to stay a second night. When I got to my room all it had was a bed and side tables and chair but no heater or wall lamp for reading. Most hostels have reading lights so I’m expecting to at least have this for $143 a night. I had to ask for a heater as it had got very cold and they said it would take 15 mins. The bathroom was shared of course but upon going in, it was covered completely with sandflies, cobwebs and spiders… so unpleasant. No heater in the bathroom either so showering in a cold bug infested room was not ideal. They did clean this when I told them about it. But I shouldn’t have to ask for basic amenities to be clean. I wanted to move into my friends room who actually did have a wall lamp and a bathroom with a small kitchette and since I was paying a lot for the two nights I asked if I could possibly have their room the next night. They said it wouldnt be a problem. So after going out for the day I came back to check in to that room and the third guy told me there were no housekeepers to clean rooms and so I’d have to take it dirty. Like what?! They all left for the day and there’s no one on site to clean rooms… this seems so bizarre to me. So I had no choice to go back to my original room which was fine but I wouldn’t have packed all my stuff up if I’d known.
As it was raining heavily, there was also a really bad leak right on my door so when you opened the door to go out you have your own personal McLean falls. No need to go sightseeing when you are in room 16. And the pizza in the bar was not worth $37.. more like $18. Quite disappointing
- Olivia (5/5): - The kitchen was missing some cutlery and utensils.
- Garry (7/5): - Great location for sightseeing in area. Nice unit. Restaurant menu very limited
- FionaEllen (5/5): - The location was fantastic and we could have our dog with us. The resort/rooms are outdated and are in need of either repairs or renovation. The tv didn't work because the satalite box is now obsolete and need to be replaced with ones that are compatible with the new satellite that Freeview runs off (we know this because we had to replace our own).
We didn't use the electric blanket because we could see the exposed wires on the plug.
The location is fantastic and the hosts are friendly but the resort is not what it used to be and it is becoming run down. The grounds are not maintained - everywhere you look there is long grass and weeds. All it would take would be a gardener and a builder to fix all the problems with the buildings eg, fixing rotten boards and maybe a lack of paint - there seems to be a lack of investment of property and building upkeep.
- Dean (8/5): -
- Leonie Mc (10/5): Close to iconic sites - This venue was chosen because of the proximity to Cathedral Caves. McLean Falls were also worth the look. We knew this would be rustic, but the chalet accommodation was fantastic.
The restaurant was great but closes its doors at 6pm. They also make great coffee.
- ANDREW (9/5): Good value and necessary facilities - Somewhere safe to stay and good value in a special location
Like an outback caravan park with needed facilities and service
Cosy little room Maybe water available near the rooms
- Mia (7/5): -
- Uwe (6/5): -
- Stewart (2/5): Give this one a miss - Nothing in particular. Reception inhospitable. Inflexible. Lacking understanding of the business of customer service.
The premises are large looked run down.
Booked for two nights but left after the first night.
- Judith (8/5): Comfortable and value for money - Location. Spread out cabins Poor water pressure
- Heather (2/5): Very disappointing, failed to deliver on services advertised. - Loved the location. Close to other areas we were visiting. The stay was supposed to include tv, sky. The person on reception said he was sorry it wasn’t working at the moment when I called to ask how to use the tv. Our nephew was playing in a sports team we were keen to fōllow so we were very disappointed. We asked where else may have a tv and he had no interest or idea.
Later in the evening I went to have a shower snd the hot water didn’t work. I called to leg the reception know and was told it probably couldn’t be xhecjed because it was nearly after hours. I reminded the person it was the second failure to deliver services advertised and that I would speak to someone in the morning re some sort if reimbursement of our payment. At least 45 minutes later we heard banging at the back of our cottage while someone replaced the gas bottle. Theis was followed by loud banging on the door to talk to us.
- Tammy (3/5): Larger property than expected but didn't excel due to uninterested staff, damp conditions, rats etc - the property was a large size and the location was great - The property was incredibly damp, smelled bad and cold as no firewood left for the log burner
- The property had rats in it that got through our food!
- At 05:15 in the morning someone tried to get in the property and the staff didn't handle it well. Police weren't called and was told it was a possum which it clearly wasn't. CCTV was working or checked and no follow up. Very worrying with little kids present
- Erik (8/5): - Shared amenities close to cabin. Light in amenities room Switched off automatically within 20 seconds. WIFI breaks down totally with first drop of rain.
- Fiona (3/5): Very average for the price paid. - The location was good for visiting attractions nearby. The restaurant is said to be award winning. This was not our experience. Menu shown online is not the menu there. It is quite expensive for what it is. Very little selection of drinks. Grounds need extensive maintenance, weeds everywhere. Room was ok. Dated and basic.
- Sandra (4/5): A campground with basic accommodation- not a resort - Location
Staff friendly Not a resort - more a camping ground
Issues with heating and electric blanket - not all working
TV not working ( satellite issues for months evidently)
Not restaurant quality food - basic cafe only
Accommodation needs refurbishment
- Adam (1/5): Overpriced dump!! - Leaving Nasty odour when you walk into the room.
Dirty carpets.
Plates and cutlery were filthy and needed to be scrubbed just to use them. The tea towels smelt and looked like they hadn’t been washed.
All surfaces in the kitchen felt greasy.
Pillows stink like old man b.o.!! The bed quilt had a cover on it and obviously is rarely changed. Bed sheets were clean but there wasn’t even the slightest hint of washing powder smell.
Bath towels are old and smelly.
No vanity shelf in the bathroom.
Towel rail was ready to fall off the wall.
Went to make breakfast in the morning to find there was only one bowl (which needed to be washed) and very minimal offers of tea and coffee.
I’ve stayed in places all over the South Island that are 5 times nicer for half the price.
What an absolute 💩hole.
Avoid at all costs!
- Elizabeth (Liz) (8/5): Peaceful and enjoyable. - Away from any towns.
Quietness. Restaurant on site. Quality pizza and good craft lager. Perhaps a better explanation of where our cabin was and its associated facilities.
- Bojana (10/5): - We did an upgrade to chalet and it was totally worth it. Chalet had everything we need. Staff was friendly and helpful.
- Mehdi (9/5): - L'emplacement ! 😃
- melissa (7/5): -
- Jayne (1/5): terrible we will never return or recommend - Nothing the Lack of cleanness
No fridge or microwave in our mountain view room which was a car park for other visitors
- Ian H Graham (8/5): -
- Dawn UK (5/5): Close to places of intetest - The location was near to places we wanted to visit in this part of the Caitlins. The electric blanket warmed up the cold damp sheets before bed. The kitchen area was very large and the comfy big chairs and the pool table were nice to use. The room was very cold when we entered, windows were wide opened. This was to hide the musty smell that appeared when I closed them. There is a radiator which is great but it is on a timer so you have to keep switching it on. There were many cobwebs on the windows of the cabin room, which I wiped off with a cloth. There were two bathrooms with a shower and toilet. One of them had a broken toilet seat, the other had the body wash dispenser broken on the shower enclosure floor. There were not clean at all and need some TLC! If both were busy with people taking showers, there was no toilet for you to use. The food in the restaurant was very expensive for what you got. All in all it served the purpose but was disappointing for the price we paid.
- Anne (5/5): Did not meet expectations - Unit was surrounded by bush
Close to many Catlins attractions Unit was very dated dark & cold on arrival. TV reception none. Staff never told us they were not working. We thought the cost of the unit & meal expensive. Restaurant drink selection poor.
- Brogan (8/5): - I liked how there was art in the bedrooms The kitchen and bar closed at 7,30pm just FYI
- Roukaya (4/5): -
- Lesley (2/5): We had high expectations after earlier visits. These were not met. - Great location. Facilities and services were considerably reduced since our last visit several years ago. Our cabin had comfortable beds but a random collection of kitchen hardware. We had to go back to the office to request a can opener. Doors to bathroom and bedroom had latches removed. Minimal channels available on TV, intermittent internet.
We had planned on using the cafe for easy meals but one night of overpriced frozen pizzas was enough.
- Niki (8/5): Great relaxing stop off location - Location
Communal space Price and variety of good at resturant
- Karl (7/5): - The Cathedral Caves are reachable within a few minutes. Some kids friendly walks are reachable within 40 minutes driving time. The farmhouse lodge had enough space for us (3 adults + 2 kids). The equipnment of the rooms looks old.
- Kay (5/5): It’s ok for a short stay - Easy check in and close to the attractions. Spacious. We stayed in the 2beds self contained cabin and it comes with everything that we need The kitchen window and the vanity were quite dirty. The gas bottle was empty and asked for the exchange/swap over but the staff didn’t turned up so hubby did it himself and luckily there’s a full bottle next to it
- Janina (9/5): It was better than we expected! Some of the reviews we’ve read were untrue. There were cold and hot water available all - The only staff we met was Gurdavir (not sure if I spelled it correctly 😅,) not sure if he was the only one managing everything but he was friendly and accommodating! We also loved how close the place was to Cathedral Caves and McLean falls. The stuffiness in our room, the airflow I believe can be improved.
- Yang (8/5): -
- Graeme (1/5): Very disappointing - Meal was ok but very pricey Light in bath room faulty. Shower had no hot water
- Toni (3/5): Disappointing. Not much of a "resort" - The surrounding area
Beds were comfortable Restaurant was overpriced and limited choice
Wifi was terrible. No coverage at our cabin
- Ad (1/5): was door hun geannuleerd! - De dag ervoor werd ons verblijf geannuleerd. Tot nu toe, ondanks email contact GEEN GELD TERUG ONTVANGEN.
- chris (5/5): -
- Maggie (4/5): -
- Viktor (8/5): - Nice place with restoraunt.
- Glenda (7/5): - Convenient spot for accommodation and cafe. Map of site was confusing.
Property needs some maintenance and a tidy up.
- Massimiliano (4/5): -
- Elaine (6/5): It was average but was clean and warm - Clean Not all facilities worked.
TV in room did not go at all and was not advised of this on arrival.
Restaurant was very basic
- Anita (4/5): Was comfy for a nigjht - Had kettle and plunger but only 6 tea bags.
Towels and face cloths looked like rags.
Asked to.wash all dishes and return to room but had no tea towels.
I booked on booking.com. and pictures definitely did not look like what I booked online!
We thought we had a 2 bedroom 2 beds and a kitchen but definitely the opposite.
- Martine (7/5): -
- Glenis & Preston (3/5): Over priced rip off - Nothing. A real cheek calling it a resort. Horrible small room, very outdated and run down. Poor bathroom, no hairdryer, nothing to wash or dry dishes, no wineglasses, no comfortable seats, TV not working. Restaurant shut early, poor menu. Not clean, spiders in room.
- Alistair (9/5): Very comfortable - Location was beautiful and closeness to the waterfalls
- Rose (6/5): - kitchen was not well stocked with cooking utensils/ equipment
- Lara (10/5): - Very cute stand-alone a-frame units. The electric blanket and kettle/tea and coffee were a nice added touch.
- Georg (3/5): we're not coming anymore - The location of the accommodation was convenient for our travel route. The room was unappealing and very run-down. The water fell out while I was showering (approx 09:30 pm). We tried to reach someone, but this was not possible either by phone nor by email. The reception was also closed. Finally, I finished showering at the campsite. Breakfast was only offered from 9:30 am onwards, that's too late if you want to continue your journey.
- Maggie (6/5): - Lovely surroundings. The bathroom could do with updating. Everything looked tired.
- Hopkins (3/5): Terrible service, bit run down, nice area - The setting is beautiful Told they didn’t have my booking through booking.com even though had booking confirmation. Tried to make me pay again for a room I didn’t book.
- Claire (5/5): - Excellent location for visiting Cathedral Caves which is just down the road. Accommodation does the job for an overnight stay. Staff great and very kindly cooked us a pizza and garlic bread even though were shutting kitchen as we’d arrived late and hadn’t been able to get food. Fairly basic and in need of a refresh
- Joel (8/5): - A nice place to stay, great rooms and comfy bed. Heater provided. Only downside was that the toilets were in the toilet block, not in the rooms
- Christine (3/5): Not good value for money and too far from the toilets. Sub-standard compared to other places visited - Location was good. Close to McLean Falls. Bed too soft. Not a lot of kitchen equipment etc. No information at reception about the local area. No pegs available for washing line. Restaurant too expensive and not a lot of choice. Did not seem customer focused. No TV reception. Told satellite issue. Wi-fi not good here. Too far from the toilets.
- Juliet (6/5): Good location poor staff - Location The kitchen closed a 7 pm the bar at 8
The snooker table was broken . The staff said they would serve breakfast a 9 am but didn’t turn up.
- Maurus (8/5): - Super eingerichtete Küche
Einfaches Zimmer
- LuAnne (7/5): Good stop over. Don’t rely on there being food - Cute place with many options for staying. We stayed at the lodge which was away from main area and we liked that Reception young man not very helpful. He said there was no breakfast available yet all advertising was that there was.
- iris (7/5): - The setting was lovely and the restaurant convenient . The bedding .
Mattress felt old and uncomfortable. The pillows flat and old ~ it just didn't feel fresh to sleep in.
- Dirk (1/5): Nie wieder! - Nichts!
- patricia (4/5): - The cottage was ok and the ground ok The kitchen and guests facilities were really shabby. Not even cutlery in the kitchen. The kitchen was horrible
- Ng (4/5): - Need cleaning up the house Spacious living room
- Benjamin (5/5): Just like a frog really... - The location was right in the middle of the catlans. The staff couldnt care less, the cabin was tiny and tv didnt work well at all (great dvd choices though), and the facilities were a bit lackluster
- Florian (9/5): - Very nice place thanks
- Sonia (6/5): A well located holiday park that needs some TLC - Such an amazing location for seeing the Catlins Quite a few facilities not working/lacking, including the TV in our room, dart board, no soap in the mens bathroom whilst we were there
- Andreas (4/5): - The Restaurant was open for one hour, 5-6 pm. Since the resort is in a remote location, it would be useful to know that for trip planning. The resort is dated; nevertheless, housekeeping could be better organized. In our room, there was no soap in the sink soap dispenser, but in the shower dispenser. The sink had separate hot and cold water faucets and no stopper. There was a random selection of dishes in the room, stacked in no particular order. All very haphazard. Together with the brown bed linens, it makes one suspicious of the general cleanliness.
- Peter (8/5): great place to stay in Caitlin's Conservation park - Great location in The Catlins, handy to have a Restaurant for Dinner ; spacious & warm on cold wet night
- Penny (7/5): Convenient location and nice dinner food available -
- Thi Mai Phuong (6/5): -
- Dallas (6/5): Only a short stay two nights, staff friendly but all a little run down , location amazing . - Location Below expectations, bar and restaurant closed to early with little options , a little run down
- Caroline (8/5): Comfortable cabin to stay in for our Catlins visit - The location was great. The shower was hand held which I prefer. The chairs on the verandah were great to sit on in the afternoon. Sandflies but that's not the motel's fault.
- Margaret (4/5): - We have stayed there four times now. As usual, the restaurant and food was good value and delicious.
It unfortunately but the cottages are getting run down, so disappointing! (We had two units) This would be my last time. Not as clean as it should have been. Used towels behind my bedroom door hanging there. Went to the front desk for a chat but wasn’t open at 8:50 a.m.
- Christine (9/5): - Nice cottage, roomy enough for 4 adults. Nice sized kitchen with ample cooking utensils, a decent sized fridge and cooking implements. Beds a bit soft. Water pressure in shower not strong but hot. Lovely peaceful location. All good
- GRAHAM (7/5): Good location and really nice facilities. Needs so attention to details - Location and meals were really good. The common room was very good The bed felt like it was sagging to one side. The in roo facilities were limited. There was a kettle, but the cord voukdnt reach the only outlet.
- Andreas (3/5): -
- HONGHUI (10/5): -
- MILTON (3/5): What a disaster. - Nothing. Pictures do NOT represent the condition of the property. Checked in at 7 pm. Room was old and tired. Towels were worn thin. Water pressure terrible. No soap or shampoo in bathroom. Went back to Reception/Restaurant within 20 minutes to complain but was closed and no one around.
- Michelle (10/5): -
- Melissa (5/5): The staff where very nice we stayed from Friday to Sunday and I’m pretty confident that the shared bathrooms where never - I liked that it had a restaurant and bar The restaurant shut at 7 pm
The cabins where cold and the tv didn’t work
- David (8/5): - Convience ,friendly,efficient
- Judith (6/5): - Sehr gute Lage Zimmer roch extrem muffig, kein Kühlschrank im Zimmer
- Kevin (4/5): great location but rooms were tired and grounds needed work.lack of love. - ideal location for catlins no T V satelite.menu at resturant was very limited and different to website
- Christof (7/5): -
- Stacey (7/5): Good for the area - The accommodation was easy to find and facilities were clean. Staff were friendly and helpful. WiFi was only available around the reception area. We booked a cabin and had no WiFi coverage at all.
I also didn’t enjoy that the shower temperature wasn’t really adjustable. Only one tap that took a while to heat up. Considering it is a wet and cold summer, that was unpleasant.
- Carl (8/5): -
- Risk (4/5): Overpriced for what it is. - This is an excellent location if you want to explore the catlins. Our room was clean but dated The staff were not friendly, the place used to be an icon in the catlins, with a great vibe. It is expensive for what you get. I booked an extra night directly through the whistling frog, they charged me twice the price as booking.com. Tried to say it was an upgrade, definitely wasn’t.
- John (6/5): Good basic accomodation close to many lovely walks & beaches - Good location Staff customer service not great
