Guest Reviews

- Danielle (10/5): - We had an excellent stay at Shimaya. The owner was so welcoming and helpful and the breakfast was so fresh. It was a great experience. He drove us to the monkey park and then we walked back through the lovely Shibu Onsen town. Highly recommend
- Robyn (10/5): Best part of our Japan trip, beautiful countryside, mountains and snow monkeys - The owner was very friendly and helpful
- Leeland (10/5): - Staff and owners were friendly, room was nicely sized. We apprecieted the free shuttle to to the Monkey Park trailhead. Breakfast was simple but delicious and good value. Onsen were very hot! Slightly dated facilities, difficult to find conveniently located wall outlets for charging devices, walls/windows very thin so not too soundproof (tricky with baby) but thats too be expected at a Ryokan
- Ivy (10/5): -
- Laura (10/5): Brilliant stay - This place was absolutely fantastic, this was genuinely one of the best stays my husband and I have had. The rooms were great, the onsen was lovely, the location was fantastic, and the hospitality and service of the staff went above and beyond from driving us to the monkey park to advising us on great walking paths nearby. I'd highly reccomend Shimaya to anyone visiting Yamanouchi.
- Tania (9/5): It was awesome, in a great location and would highly recommend. - Fabulous hosts picked us up from the station which although very close, was a brilliant help with the bags. They also dropped us off at the snow monkeys. The property is very authentic with Onsens and appropriate clothing to wear as well as snow boots and a drying room.
- Eoghan (10/5): -
- Thitipat (10/5): Cozy and homy Lovely Onsen - Service None
- Simen (10/5): Charming ryokan with great staff. - We loved the friendly staff. Great view from our room. Clean and charming ryokan.
- Emily (9/5): - There are so many things to like about Shimaya - location, staff, value for money - wouldn't hesitate to recommend and hope to stay again.
- Hanne (8/5): Ryokan med ekte atmosfære! - Veldig sjarmerende Ryokan med deilige private bad! Litt slitt, og ganske enkel frokost, men rent og vennlig.
- Paul (10/5): -
- Michael (10/5): Great Stay - Such a lovely stay with a lovely family! And you do feel like family when you arrive. Aside from that, the rooms are comfortable (if a bit dated), the location is fantastic, and there is plenty of parking. .
- Rachelle (8/5): recommended if you are heading to the monkey park nearby. - staff members were very nice. the location fits what the listing says a little pricey for a room with shared bathroom.
- Florian (9/5): -
- Guest (9/5): Homely inn - Gorgeous, thoughtful staff, onsen and simple but ample breakfast. Nothing -it was ace.
- Liezel (10/5): Perfect, I would like to visit again. - The hosts were so helpful and friendly. Nothing
- jun rong (10/5): -
- Dwayne (9/5): -
- Jayanti (7/5): the hosts were very very nice and friendly and helpful. - Onsen and the bed the stairs
- Kathleen (10/5): Great place to stay for good value and the sweetest couple you'll ever meet. - This was our second time staying at Shimaya. The hotel is owned and run by the cutest couple ever. They speak enough english to get by and want to make sure that your stay in Yudanaka is perfect. They have lots of recommendations and go out of their way to make the stay lovely. They even drove us to the monkey park! We enjoyed everything from the traditional tatami mat floors and bedding to the simple but delicious breakfast.
- Fatime (10/5): - Very friendly staff
Nice Japanese breakfast
Enjoyed private bath
- Angela (10/5): We thoroughly enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and comfortable facilities at Shimaya. - We loved the friendly atmosphere and exceedingly comfortable beds. Breakfast was great, especially the entertainment provided by the pianola! The only minor issue was the heat of the onsen. We found them a little hot to bathe
- LoThur (9/5): -
- Caroline (10/5): Lovely hotel - Lovely homely place to stay. The owners are so kind and thoughtful, and it feels like a real traditional Japanese experience. The location is perfect for visiting the monkey park, but I wish we could have stayed longer to further explore the area.
- Matthias (10/5): - One of the best stays we ever had. Super friendly staff, very nice and traditional ryokan experience. We highly recommend to come here.
Especially the traditional rooms with futons, the owner giving us tips for what to see, the included shuttle service to the monkey park (they drive you a little early around 8am, which is perfect to be one of the first people there before the crowds) and the private onsen that you can reserve for an hour (super hot, but nice!) where super nice.
- Monika (10/5): - Great place and very friendly hosts. Drive us to the snow monkeys. Helped us getting reservations at a great restorane and advised on hot to use public onsens.
I think it is the best place if you like to get a rest Japanese feeling while enjoying onsen and nature.
- Emiliano (8/5): - Very close (1 mile) to the snow monkey park. Breakfast was very good. The owners running the hotel were super nice and accommodating. Very close to the snow monkey park, the hotel can drive you there. It is nice to walk back through the old town the hotel is in to experience the local vibe. The bathrooms are somewhat dated with little room to put stuff on.
- Emma (8/5): -
- Phoenix (10/5): Amazing - the host is very nice and helpful. We felt comfortable and happy here - Loved the room, the view, the private onsen, the bath in the room and best of all was the staff and the fun vibe. Very helpful and nice staff
- TARYN (10/5): Amazing hosts in a traditional setting. We would stay again! - The owners were very friendly and helpful with anything you needed. Great location and spacious room. The beds are very firm with an even firmer pillow. I would
Recommend you bring your own pillow.
- Mark (10/5): Fabulous stay in a welcoming traditional hotel close to the Snow Monkey Park. - Delightful traditional room and very spacious for Japan. Onsen bath on the property was a bonus and the beautiful kimons to borrow while at the hotel was icing on the cake. We arrived before check in, and were whisked up to the snow monkey park in the hotel’s complimentary shuttle. Just be aware there is no lift.
- Maria (10/5): Shimaya - the heart of Yudanaka area - Great location, walking distance to the train station. The owners were lovely and wanted to help in any way they could.
The rooms were very traditional. I loved the tatami mats, the futons were comfortable, and the Japanese teaset and traditional Yukata (robes), provided for going to and from the onsen, were beautiful and very comfortable to wear. The owner provides free transport up to the snow monkey Park at 8am so we were the first to arrive which was so so good and no crowds.
Beautiful accommodation, warm friendly owners and walking distance to ancient Shibu onsen town and several great dining options Rooms are small by Western standards but they are very beautiful and worth the experience of staying in a traditional Ryoken.
- Louis (8/5): - Incredible staff, really helped give local recommendations for izakaya's and updates on the slopes at Shiga-kogen.
- Karen (9/5): Loved our stay there. Parking just out the front and the private onsen was great, continental breakfast was a bonus too. - Loved the private onsen. The stairs are hard work with luggage but not really an issue.
- Auður (10/5): Relaxing and beautiful adventure - The staff was friendly and because it is a family business everything felt very relaxed and “homey”. They offer a ride to the Monkey Park and they made sure we were there early so we almost had the park to ourselves which made the experience unforgettable. Nice and simple breakfast, toast, eggs, yogurt and fresh fruits. Juice and coffee. We loved the futon beds and had the best sleep here. This town, Yamanouchi, is small but extremely beautiful. There are not many restaurants but the few that are here offered some of the best food we tasted during our Japan trip. Could not recommend this stay more!
- Fiona (10/5): - Friendly owners, very comfortable futon beds. Private onsen is clean and simple to book. Breakfast is very simple, still very tasty but don't expect a full cooked meal. It was toast, boiled eggs, fruit, cereal and drinks. Still highly recommended!
- Katie (10/5): A beautiful traditional Japanese accommodation with lovely owners. From the rooms, to breakfast, to the onsens and the s - A real treat to find. Very traditional Japanese accommodation with a cosy, homely feel. Nothing - it was wonderful.
- Brent (10/5): Shimaya is the quintessential retro ryokan experience, with a wonderful proprietor - The continental breakfast was wonderful - fresh fruit, milk bread, fresh jammy hard boiled eggs, coffee, and cereals. Perfect to get you fueled up for your day.
- Monique (9/5): - Location and staff was excellent
- Laukkanen (9/5): Great place, great location - Wonderful place close to the train station. A short walk away from Shibu Onsen. We had a lovely room, and the onsen bath was really nice. When we went to see the monkeys, the guest house lent us boots as there were still snow. To be honest, all was good.
- Xiaotian (8/5): -
- Viviana (10/5): - The staff was very kind. They took us to the monkey park early in the morning so we wouldn't encounter many people. The onsen in the hotel was amazing, they provided us with beautiful yukatas and slippers to get in. The breakfast was very complete, I really enjoyed it. The rooms were very spacious, comfortable and pretty, with a traditional design. Tatami floors are so comfortable! Again I have to mention how friendly the owner was. English is not my first language and either his yet we could communicate and he shared things he knew about my country and made sure we got our visit right. The building is a bit old and I get that it might not be attractive to everyone but old buildings tend to have characteristics that are hard to find in new ones. For example, the rooms are more spacious, we even got a beautiful terrace with a view. The room where they serve breakfast was in the basement and it looked like it was an old party or dance room with a bar and an old jukebox, it was very interesting to see that.
- Lawrence (10/5): Great place. - Great experience in a ryokan and onsen. Proximity to town. Room was great
- Catherine (10/5): Great location, lovely owners, great traditional atmosphere! - The hosts are a couple who have been running the inn for years, it is such a special place! They are so nice and helpful with a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park and local recommendations. My kids loved it there! Nothing, this place is the best!
- Chris (10/5): Fabulous location with lovely hosts.. - Fantastic hosts who were very welcoming.
Very close to the Snow Monkey park.
Rooms were spacious and clean.
Enjoyed using the onsens. Nothing
- Priyanka (10/5): A memorable stay at a ryokan run by one of the most hospitable people I have ever met. - Each room has a tatami mat floor on which shoes are not allowed, a sliding door which opens up to a balcony, and a bath. The private onsen at the ryokan was superb (one reserves this by writing their name on the sheet just outside the onsen). The man who runs the place is incredible -- he exudes a passion for entertaining guests. We felt so welcome at this ryokan. Highly recommended.
- Andy (10/5): Would come again! - Charming and beautiful. Great location. Very helpful and friendly staff. Nothing
- Rael (10/5): So cute, Loved it! - Breakfast was basic but sufficient. The staff are amazing, and the room is so cute. Love Shimaya
L’acqua dell’onsen era davvero troppo calda! Impossibile riuscire ad entrare. Peccato!
- Irina (9/5): Pleasant stay in Yudanaka - Location, onsen, the owner the is super nice and attentive. The included drive to monkey park makes a huge difference. You can beat the crowds as they drive you there at 8am. Toilet is on the balcony and somewhat cold in winer time. Also the main area is a bit outdated and needs some TLC
- Stephen (8/5): - The staff were very informative and friendly, gave us great recommendations to see the snow monkeys early. Superb.
- Yeung (10/5): -
- Adam (10/5): Love the owner and great location - Love the owner. He was very friendly and we enjoyed the piano downstairs. Comfortable futon and great view from the room.
- VERONIQUE (8/5): - Personnel très serviable.
- Alma Orania (7/5): -
- tania (9/5): Love Yudanaka onsen - Friendly hosts, wonderful onsen and perfect location Nothing
- Peiwei (9/5): - Super friendly staff
- Eunice (9/5): Homely ryokan stay - Friendly staff, fantastic hospitality, comfortable stay with convenient onsen The steep staircase
Super praktisch. Sehr gastfreundlich. I
- Janette (9/5): A very relaxing stay with beautiful balcony views. - Easy to get to from train.
A very cozy and traditional Japanese hotel.
Owners are very helpful to get us to Snow monkeys early as to avoid crowds.
- Simon (9/5): - Very welcoming and chatty host! No lift
Colazione ok. Non c'è ascensore
- Emma (10/5): Great place to stay in Yudanaka. Not a 5 star hotel but traditional yet comfortable. - Friendly staff, private and public onsens, view, location, lift to snow monkey park, traditional, warm Nothing
- Rhys (8/5): -
- WEI (Eden) (10/5): -
- Mathew (10/5): Very friendly and welcoming - Authentic Nil
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Sarah (8/5): -
- Sandra (10/5): Fantastic! - Loved the hospitality and traditional Japanese vibe of the hotel. The onsen made the stay even better. Perfect location for skiing in Shiga Kogen, 30 min with the local bus, 5 min walk from the hotel! Great authentic food near the hotel.
- Westerman (10/5): Genuine. Pleasurable. And unique. - We loved the owners… they went out of their way to make our stay unique. They were beyond kind. I didn’t fully understand that we would have to share a bathroom on the second floor, but that was probably my misunderstanding. There are rooms with private toilets as well.
- Leobardo (9/5): - Personal muy amable
- Bronwyn (9/5): -
- Ryan (10/5): - friendly proprietor took time to chat and give recommendations to us, spacious rooms, good temperature onsen it was ok
- May (9/5): Good location and very nice facility! - It was close to the monkeys. Private onsen was nice. We got a ride to and from the monkey park and to the train station. We were able to borrow snow boots. Property was fine.
- VG_Ltd (5/5): Nice hot spring, property adequate. - The owner, Mr. Yumoto, provides a ride to the monkey park, which is really nice, and the property is situated on a quiet street just a short walk from the train station and they will pick you up if you pre-arrange. The hot spring in the hotel is very nice, clean and hot. Also, he recommended a visit to nearby town Obuse. WOW WOW WOW wish I'd have known about this town earlier. It is beautiful and has many fun places to visit (unlike Yudanaka). Recommend: stay in Obuse and arrange to visit the monkey park, or stay one night at Shibuya to see the monkeys (early, right at opening, is best), the rest in Obuse. I was expecting a lovely property and was disappointed to find it to be old, frumpy, dog-eared. Regretted my decision upon arrival, but thought it was so well-rated, perhaps give it a chance. Sad to report it did not redeem itself. There are many many rules. The owner only helped when he was in the right mood I think. Also, we were given 1 towel per day so if you get it wet (taking a shower or using the hot spring) in the morning. you will have to use your cold wet towel all day. Breakfast was functional but not nice, and there was no complimentary coffee or tea available without paying for breakfast. Also: if you want the experience of going from hot-spring to the next in your yukata, it is in the next town over, in Shiba Onsen (where there are many many ryokan) and easy to get to from Yudanaka train station.
- Kelly (6/5): Location, service were great, accommodations were so-so. Snow monkeys and snowboarding were awesome. - Onsen was nice and clean. Yumoto san was very friendly and helpful. He provided boots for the snowy conditions and a ride to the Snow Monkey Park. The blanket for the futon was soft and cozy. Location was reasonable and fairly walkable from the train station. While the facility was clean it was very dated. The worst part was the futon mattress. It was extremely uncomfortable. I’ve slept in many “washitsu” or traditional tatami rooms in hotels before but that mattress was the worst.
- Nitchakarn (9/5): - We stayed here as a family during our New Year trip.
It is a small and charming place with an onsen, and we had a very comfortable stay.
The owner kindly provided many helpful tips for visiting the Snow Monkey Park, which we truly appreciated.
After check-out, they also generously offered to drive us to the train station.
We truly enjoyed our time here and had a wonderful stay. Not about accommodation but for other advise
During new year period it was a bit hectic. e.g. Train and bus was crowded. The restaurant around the area mostly closed or sold out.
So recommend to visit the place during less busy period
Rien
- Aldo (9/5): -
- Lorenzo (3/5): -
- Ricardo (8/5): Adequate for the price paid - the hotel room and the ride to the park the lobby and the location
- Díaz de la Vega Broissin (10/5): -
- Luca (10/5): -
- Agnieszka (10/5): Warm and homely stay, totally recommend - Staying here was a highlight of my trip. First of all, the staff is so nice! The lady who welcomed me was so sweet, she explained everything and showed me around. There’s also a kind gentleman working here who can take you up the snow monkey park (I visited the monkeys before checking-in, so I didn’t get to experience catching a ride). Shimaya is a ryokan, with beautifully furnished room in a traditional japanese style. You can choose a yukata to wear to the onsen downstairs, which is pretty good as well! It’s quite small, but extremely clean and during my stay I was the only person using it at the time (and I went twice!) so if you’re lucky, it can feel like a private onsen experience. All of this really helps with immersing yourself into the culture. On top of that, Shimaya is located in one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited - if you go during winter and if you experience snow then you will know what I mean. It’s totally worth waking up early to see the sunrise (bonus tip - taking the train between Yudanaka and Nagano at 6 am is an amazing experience with breathtaking views of the foggy mountains). And speaking of sleep - the futon was SO comfortable, I slept really well.
- Gary (7/5): - They have free boots and limited ice grips for shoes to use when visiting the snow monkey park. They also offer free trips around 830AM (morning only) to the snow monkey park to beat the crowd - no shuttle back. Comfortable and clean rooms even though the building is more dated. Friendly staff. The public bath is on the smaller size (can fit maybe 6 people max) but it was empty everytime we went. They have private baths you can reserve for free as well.
- carla (10/5): A great and relaxing experience - The location was not far at all from the train station. The owner was vey kind and accommodating . Staying there is like you are stepping back in time.
