Guest Reviews
- Scott (2/5): - The accommodation was cancelled, when we arrived we were told they had some water damage and they were unable to provide accommodation. They stated this happened 2 weeks ago but we were not informed so we had to try and find alternate accommodation at Double the price.
- Kirsty Dorothy Frances (4/5): - Good Location. Poor cleanliness. Showers in our room not working had to use other ones.
- Teena (2/5): - Very run down. No fans, no air conditioning. Very bad condition over all.
- John (4/5): - Lovely helpful staff
- Michael (2/5): - Buyer beware. Our room was water damaged from a storm, wet carpet, wet mattress, wet sheets and the stench was appalling. Due to festival no alternate accommodation was available in Berry, Kiama, Wollongong. We braved it for 1 night and cancelled our second night as the room was uninhabitable. Despite promising a refund, they later said the terms and conditions stated refunds were not an option, even though the room was uninhabitable and not fit for purpose. Noone responds to emails or phone calls despite saying they will. Bathrooms were dirty, no hand wash sinks, showers are a health hazard, bar and food service were chaotic and the pub is extremely poorly managed. You have been warned.
- Jennifer (6/5): - Music festival added ambiance and vibe to the area
- Chad (2/5): - Very Dirty ignored by staff at counter for 20 mins on check in told room not ready come back in an hour 2 hours later had to get ready for the nite in the hallway as room still not ready shared bathrooms are filthy and falling apart do not stay here avoid at all costs
- Alan (2/5): - Room not ready on arrival, had to wait three hours, no staff on site to sort the rooms out. Staff from another pub as no staff were there that usually run the place.
Eventually got a room key to find a room straight from the Texas chain saw massacre.no taps in the bathroom and carpet an curtains moth eaten, holes in the roof and a complete mess. Did not stay and will be applying for a refund from last minute,
Do not bother to book in.
- Glenice (8/5): - The staff were so helpful. The hotel was basic but clean and the bed so comfortable. For the price I paid, it was excellent value.
- Diem (2/5): - The room very dirty waith mould on the ceiling. There is nothing in the room except beds. Only one share bathroom for female and it's disgusting. The tap was broken, no toilet paper. The shower is old and mouldy. Toilet door lock is broken. I recommend no one should stay here.
- Arun (2/5): - The room is not clean and it stinks. Floor is creaking. There is 'one single' shower room, wash basin and a toilet for 2 floors of guests. Wouldn't even recommend this hotel to people who are looking for the cheapest of the options. It's not worth the cheap price.
- Syeda Nishat (2/5): - Just beds & a bin. No fan in this hot summer. Windows cannot be closed. One toilet in the entire floor for female. The whole building may collapse anytime. Both regular stairs and fire exits are hard to access. In a fire every single person gonna die. It's a fire trap.
Though It's very cheap but not safe at all to spend nights.
- Rebecca (8/5): - The view is grand
- Anita (2/5): Mould hovel - This place is a disgusting mould infested hovel. It should not be allowed to be a place of accommodation. Its dirty, and the rooms are so full of mould its a disgrace. I will be reporting it to the council to inspect and close. We woke up with sore throats and after only a few hours mould growing on our things. 😱😡
- INDERJEET (2/5): Worst hotel and worst website to book hotel - I am very disappointed with hotel and hotels .com both. I couldn’t check in the day I booked hotel. I reach there in property and no one was there. After that I am trying to reach hotels.com to get my money refunded but there customer care number is not working. Worst experience ever never recommended anyone
- Pietro (6/5): - Not much needs renovating
- Jules (8/5): - Good value, clean, central location, easy check-in and check-out
- Sonia (2/5): - We arrived beyond our checkin time, roughly 5ish.
Staff made me wait 15 mins so they could obtain room key.
I had to remind them I was waiting.
I was informed that our room had not been cleaned due to the late check out. I think the people who supposedly checked out kate were still occupying the room. When entering, the room it smelt bad. Plates in sink , no toilet paper . Pubic hair bathroom sink . Holes in walls . No flat sheets . It was a horrible sight .
- Rick (8/5): - Nice old hotel
- Dave (4/5): - Dont stay in these rooms unless you want to sleep off a night of hard drinking.
- HUA (6/5): - the hotel locates at a beautiful coast, where people can stay several weekends. The hotel is too old and lack of maintenance. No one clean the room for the 4 days I stayed.
- Tommy (2/5): - Terrible cold room, rain water leaks, no power point in the room, noise, dirty room
- Cameron (8/5): - It’s the cheapest accommodation around however because of that it’s extremely dated and needs a good paint 🙂
- Carmillia (2/5): Dirty Disgusting-not worth thev money - Where do I start. This establishment is in dire refurbishment! Omg the stairs to the floors, needs desperate renovation, room had a foul smell,,dirty floors, dirty walls and stained linen, tears on the pillow case, dirty disgusting shower curtain, smalll communial area with one toilet and shower, squeaky floors in room my god I would not recommend this place to anyone, definitely will pay the extra to stay somehwere much better..my advice read the reviews before booking this hotel they say alot about the place.

- Raymond (4/5): - Not clean dirty room no power point inside room cracks every where inside room and common areas amenities. Not cheap compared to similar accomodations
- Jill (4/5): I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. - O.M.G! I should have expected the worst when i stepped onto the first worn and not carpeted step to climb up to the top floor. The stairs were carpeted further up but boy! were they a safety hazard with all the edges frayed and worn away. Finally made it to the top floor and found my room.Looked freshly painted as there was pain all over the light fixture. The bed was flat on the floor with no legs to support it luckily i was able bodied enough to get up off it.Where's the TV? there wasn't one. Where's the coffee making? After a search through the rabbit warren i found the ladies bathroom and coffee making facilities BUT no milk AND no cups. I dug through the cupboard underneath and found some plastic picnic cups but no spoons. Was wary of using the cups but had no choice if i wanted a drink.
On to the bathroom, Ancient is an understatement.I wouldn't use the shower as it was in the bathtub and this would be an impossibility to get out of with any impairment. Now back to the room; No bedhead, pillows up against the wall plus the pillows LOOKED fresh but were stained and the throw pillows were sad looking things.NEXT; NO POWER POINT IN THE ROOM! just an extension cord run through the window from god knows where. The sound of creaking boards and other guests could be heard clearly as well as the roar of pub patrons downstairs which echoed up through the courtyard outside my window. The owners need to desperately update the upper part of the pub as there seems to be lots of space .
- Paul (2/5): - The hotel area was good and staff friendly with the meals pretty good. The room was a different story. The room was basic, no power points, no heating/cooling, 1 chair, bear light globe, basic bedside table and small. The towels provided, 1 had 2 holes in it and the other was stained. The bathrooms, 1 female and 3 male bathrooms, basic but ok. When my wife went to use the bathroom in the morning there was a man in the only womens toilet, she could not use the bathroom. Every bathroom had a feature that was broken or closed off. While the accomodation was shown as basic it did not come any where close to basic.
- Zachary (2/5): - Didn't let me in, didn't awnser my phone calls or messages.
- Jinx (2/5): - Staff super rude & dismissive as if they didn’t care whether we were there or not. DIRTY ROOM. Plaster on the floor. Holes in the wall. Carpet ripped up in places. NO POWER POINTS IN THE ROOM. mouldy curtains. dirty towels and sheets. terrible. never ever again
- Paul (2/5): - Terrible
- Denis (2/5): - Not a powerpoint or sink or wardrobe.in.the room.
- Tom (2/5): - No power points in our room and blood stains on my pillow.
- Amy (2/5): - We rang up at 7.30pm to advise there was no toilet paper in the ladies bathroom on the 3rd floor. They said they would be up to fill it up. No one bothered to do it. No tissues in the bedrooms, not even paper towel. When I called the next day I was just fobbed off.
No extra blankets if cold.
Basic necessities not provided and charge full price.
- Taro (8/5): - No power point in a hotel room.
- Goldy (2/5): - Room is poorly maintained. Accomodation area is very poor.
- Frances (6/5): - A cheap stay in a great location. The rooms are a bit tired and the shared bathrooms could do with a bit of a face lift but overall a good option. We had a great time exploring the local area.
- Wayne Aubrey (6/5): - Overall experience was okay. Location is convenient and walkable from the different tourist locations in the area. However, noise from the pub could be heard from the room we stayed. The door lock of the room we stayed wasn't working too. Toilet and bath is communal and I wish it could be cleaner.
- janine (6/5): - Bathrooms with accommodation were poor.
Need a major overhaul.
Dirty in men's bathroom.
Not enough showers or toileta
- Rebecca (6/5): - Be sure to bring your cup, bowl spoons to make coffee ext. Plenty of coffee and tea milk.
Bathroom of room 21 had mold in women bathroom very noticeable maybe because of rain.
Don't like the stairs and lifts.
Bed was basic and clean room
- Kirsten (4/5): - The property is very old, holes on the walls, the room was very small and smelt musty ,the bathroom was very unclean and the linen had stains on the bedding and towels needs to have a good renovation before guests they there .The staff were very friendly though
- Rodney (2/5): - It looks like the owners have not spent a cent on the accommodation since the place was built. The carpet particularly on the staircase is threadbare, the bathrooms / showers do not even have a light switch that stays on, my single person room did not even have a power point, it was a cold windy night but there was no spare blanket available, the limited common area did not even have a wooden stirrer for tea or coffee.
- Nsangou (2/5): - The Staff understand of my complaint and acceptance to refund my bookings for 1 and 2 April.
I found another place to stay with my daughter in the middle of the night.
I would not recommend this Grand Hotel Kiama to anyone.
- Abhishek (2/5): Worst Experience - Really dirty room, bathroom is really far, no proper ventilation, dirty linens. Worst experience I have ever had for the price.
- Emmanuel (4/5): - The Room had not been cleaned properly and the shared bathrooms were dirty and full of mold
- Belinda (8/5): - Knowing that the accommodation was old and shared bathroom facilities it fulfilled the need. Couldn’t stay more than a night in the room we had but certainly gave us the cheap quick getaway we needed.
- Vera (8/5): - The room was simple, clean. Nice surprise to have a fridge available with tea cofee making facilities. No powerpoint in my room however, so could only charge my phone in the public area.
- Richard (4/5): - No power outlet in room. No AC. No bedside lamp. Dangerous torn stair carpets. $100 per night for that room is robbery!
- Angela (6/5): - Staff are nice,downstairs is great.
Just needs an urgent upgrade.
- Khai Yeong (4/5): - Old and dirty
- Robert (10/5): - Old style. Value for money. Staff were very helpful and efficient.
- Mikaela (2/5): - There was a single old female bathroom for the whole floor. The kitchenette had no sink …..? The room had no power point so no way to charge a phone. It was so bad that I left and found somewhere else to stay!
- Fiona (4/5): - Window in room would not open easily, i asked the manager to fix, he said he would but didnt, i had to chock open the window myself with rolled up towels, room is run down, carpet is disgusting, property generally run down
- Peter (6/5): - Bathroom cleanliness needs atention
- Vasilis (6/5): - If you’re looking for somewhere to only sleep and spend no time in, then this is the place for you, you get what you pay for.
- Deon (4/5): - Didn’t like
No ventilation
Cold water In shower
Felt a fire Hazzard
Stuffy
- Michael (2/5): - Absolutely disgraceful and they should not be letting out rooms in such terrible condition. No electrical sockets in room, no A?C, floors and walls dirty, showers dirty, when showering water did not go down the drain.
In one word: Disgusting
- Sofia Le (2/5): - Our beds had sand in them, the ground wasn’t vaccumed properly… the shared toilets weren’t cleaned once during our stay and smelt like cigarettes. Also, for a room that should fit 6 ppl, there was only 1 powerpoint within two rooms that worked.
The staff on the other hand were lovely, and when we asked for an extension chord they were happy to help. Check in and check out was easy and efficient.
- Marejka (8/5): - This a beautiful old hotel. Our rooms and bedding were very clea. Old school shared toilets and 3 flights of stairs makea the stay nice and quirky. Cant complain for the pirce I paid
- Peter (6/5): - Cleanliness is a real problem, I’m sure the cleaners would do a better job if granted the time by the Owners, they were very friendly as we left the hotel early in the morning, but I suspect the Owners haven’t recognised the importance of ensuring the accommodation is looked after.
Dusty floors, stains on linen.
Still quite expensive for what you get: probably better value for money if in large group of people not concerned over cleanliness and more using it as a cheap and cheerful base. I was there with my wife and three young children, but in hindsight it probably was not an appropriate venue for our needs, which was my oversight, but not one I’ll make again.
- Marcus (6/5): - Further to all the complaints about The Grand at this review site, the fact is that it's what it is, and doesn't pretend to be anything other than that! Given the price in comparison to what you'd pay elsewhere - and for that matter anywhere else in Kiama or the Wollongong environs coast - it's frankly great value for the prices it charges, while one can easily stay there for one - or even two - nights without being forever psychologically scarred! Staff can be matter of fact (they work in a busy pub in case you haven't noticed!) while they're friendly enough, and the premises go to great lengths to ensure C-19 safety via handwash and for the most part, reasonably clean bathrooms by pub standards. Basically, if you expect to get more than 2/3 star accom. for the prices, go elsewhere to avoid complaining, while if you can adapt to a setting which is up front honest re: what it says it offers, you won't be too disappointed. Other than that, the best thing about The Grand are their extremely generous cancellation terms and conditions!
- Renai (2/5): - Do not stay here. I pre-booked and the first room they showed me had some kind of active stains on the bed with used linen and had not been cleaned at all. The second was clean-ish but had no light bulb. The toilets near the room were filthy and I would say unhygienic. I didn't feel safe staying here. The door did lock, but I wouldn't highly rate the lock. Find somewhere else until they renovate this place.
- Jinqiang (6/5): Service - No service
- Oliver (2/5): - Well 1st the staff were rude and obnoxious then the room we had booked was double booked to we were turned away
- Verified traveler (2/5): please thing twice about this. - it was not so good, very first thing their was nothing clean over their . we paid $150 for one room and that room hasn’t even any single fan( about Aircon they don’t know what’s that thing is) then we bought 2 fans from woolies and come back to room then find out their only one electric point for single fan, thats all. we seriously struggled over their. please try to find some other place instead of this one .
- Dean (4/5): - No power point in room. No fan, no air-conditioning.
- Marion (2/5): - The Bistro was great. There were too many stairs to reach accommodation and carpet on them was worn right through. The shared facilities were unclean and the room was not at all adequate - no tv, no bathroom, no wardrobe, no tissues, no clock - absolutely will not stay there again. Although the price was very cheap, it was still too expensive.
- Cassandra (2/5): - So many stairs, bathrooms not cleaned. Terrible experience. The place smells!
- Robyn (2/5): - Stairs, did not get what we paid for
- Klaus (2/5): - The staff was nice, but the first and second floor of the building where all the hotel rooms are look like they haven't been renovated in 100 years.
- Clare (8/5): - Loved the pub downstairs and hope the amazing renovations continues to the up stairs. Rooms looked nice. Screens on the windows would be good and the mould in the shower cleaned. But a good cheap stay.
- Mark (8/5): - good basic one night stop over type accommodation. cost of rooms is relative to what you get so no high expectations. If you expect 10/10 accom for 2/10 pricing then you will not be thrilled
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Need renovation,
Facilities just too old
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Staff were friendly the room was dirty and noisy could not stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very reasonable price for a pub stay for our small family.
- Linda (6/5): - Lower level just refurbished, accommodation the pits. Moth eaten carpet, holes in walls and no power plug in room. On the upside my bed was clean and comfortable and i had a great view
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A Grand Hotel probably in its day but the accommodation is now tired and needs updating (even at the low price!) Very basic rooms and shared amenities that could do with a clean. The bars downstairs are updated but it stops at the stairwell!
- Chris (4/5): - They double booked us, told us it was our fault and our problem. We also had to double pay to get another room. Eventually put us in a tiny room, didnt have any amenities not even a PowerPoint. Otherwise manager and service staff ended up being really kind but not happy overall with the room and stay. By the time we checked in it waa 8:30pm we waited 8 hrs for a room.
- Terry (2/5): Accommodation standard pre WW1 - The downstairs has rustic appeal and well done, the bedrooms upstairs are extremely poor with NO heating, bed on the floor not even a wash basin in room. Shared bathrooms are like something pre the war, world war 1 that is and are truly dreadful. At $80 it is a chronic overcharge & worth maybe $40pn. If you stay here please email me and tell me why as the accommodation is appalling.
- Verified traveler (2/5): The place definitely needs to be fully renovated - Perfect location, but the place is all destroyed and filthy. The linens were clean but it had stains, loose floorboards all over, shared bathroom was overall clean, but in bad shape.
They say there's free parking, however, it is on the street and it is a 2p zone on weekdays.
For the price, you are better off paying for camping somewhere or some other not so expensive motel.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The room was was too noisy, and had very poor access.
- CAN (10/5): Best value of travel accommodation - Grand Hotel Kiama provides comfortable and best value accommodation and is moments on foot from Kiama station. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was fantastic.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel is old and historic!
The room was big enough an overnight stay with comfortable beds clean linen.
The share bathroom was old but also clean and the shower was hot and awesome.
The bistro had a great selection and delicious food. The kids were a bit worried at first but we had a great adventure. Its was fun!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The dining area and the food was quite good. The accommodation is very poor. There was a hole in the wall in my room & the ceiling paint in the room was peeling. There is mould in the shower area. The carpet on the stairs is worn out. It would also be very easy to trip on the stairs.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The accommodation section was in terrible condition. Where do you start?? Large holes in walls, black mould in bathroom, paint falling of the ceiling... it just went on. And there were very limited showers and toilets for the number of guests.
- Verified traveler (4/5): -
Good location - good pillows .
Run down everything - terrible stairways - no basin in terrible toilets - no legs or castors on ridiculously low bed - very difficult to get out of - pity the cleaners who have to make them .
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Liked the historic value of the pub but it is run down upstairs in accomodation. Needs to be maintained.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It was clean enough but very run down and endless doors to get through to get to a bathroom.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - no bathroom
- Verified traveler (2/5): - $135 for a room with hole in roof which allowed for bugs galore, access via men’s toilet, up 3 flights of wobbly stairs, bordering on derelict and bathroom was filthy. To get to toilet during night was scary & a fare walk and I tripped down the stairs. Pub bar and restaurant was much cleaner but chose to eat out as was not giving this place another cent of my money. Never again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Needs everything done. I think it should be condemned as it is disgusting
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great dinner at the pub, clean and tidy
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The hotel needs a massive refurbishment with ripped carpet stairs, holes in walls, peeling paint and gurgling plumbing. Add to that, drunken guest voices carrying through walls until 3am in the morning. Over priced for 2 star quality, sorry but the truth needs to be said
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Room was clean neat and quiet. Just as advertised, just as I required.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The location was good, the service staff were just plain rude, room was very old and grubby. Bathroom was terrible. Coffee facilities but no cups. Very run down.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The Grand Hotel is basic pub style accomodation. But that’s what we were expecting, just a room, shared bathrooms, nothing flash.
It was just one night after a festival so that’s all we needed, and all that I was expecting, but the price reflects that.
The beds were comfy and there were clean towels there ready for us.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - All very good
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Good location within wslking distance of all facilities
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The location is good, but the condition of the hotel is very run down.
My room had plaster lying on one of the beds, directly under where it had fallen from the ceiling.
Disappointed about the distance of the room from the only woman’s bathroom I could find on the top floor, through a fire exit door.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The location was good. The building was too old. The bedding was clean but the room was bear in that all it had was 3 beds and a side table. We had to go up about three flights of stairs to get to our room.
- Darren (2/5): Not very grand hotel. - Should be stated on the website how bad it is ..I know its a pub stay but at $130 You would expect it to be far better then it is..it should be $50 a night..l still wouldn't stay it's that bad.
