Guest Reviews
- Al (10/5): Serene setting, amazing Japanese kaiseki meals, lovely staff - and a massage chair. - The room was very large (high ceiling with a loft), although every room has a different layout. Comfortable futons, outdoor private onsen bath on the verandah and a luxurious massage chair. Staff were very courteous and considerate. Onsen was nice (& not busy). All the food was wonderful, including a complimentary lunch which was also provided. The view was beautiful - so serene. Although a distance from the train, we were collected and dropped off at the station. Although not cheap, it was good value when you add in the meals, the transport and high quality accommodation. Communication prior to arrival was also good. Nothing.

- Eileen (10/5): Wonderful and relaxing stay with exceptional kaiseki meals - Wonderful staff, spacious rooms with in room onsen bath overlooking Lake Biwa. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented and so delicious. Would definitely come back again. They offer pick up and drop off at Takatsuki Station. No complaints!
- Hsiang chih (9/5): -
- Nathalie (8/5): Very nice stay, excellent food and helpful staff with the manager speaking very well English. Do rent their bikes to mak -
- Kimberly Yum Khim (9/5): Will stay again if I am in the area - Lovely ryokan with good view of Lake Biwa. We enjoy the spacious room and elegant decor in the ryokan. Fresh ikebana in the room. Dinner was beautiful and delicious. Nothing
- Didier (9/5): -
- Szilveszter (9/5): Great & relaxing ryokan - Amazing traditional building & design. Great futon beds and the private onsen was perfect too. As most traditional ryokans this is also quite expensive and while food was nice it wasn’t anything exceptional.

- Ming hao (10/5): -
- Michael (9/5): Best place to recuperate after a year of stress at work… if only this exist in my country… - This is my 4th time here. The outdoor bath with the view. And now they have a divider for shower which makes it better during winter! If I have to be picky, the heater in the tub must be aware of.
- HOI LAI (10/5): Enjoyable stay, and good bird watching location. - Staff very friendly, helpful and attentive. Especially Ms. Singh, good smiling face and fluent English speaking. Room was spacious and surprised to have a massage chair. Both dinner were delicious. Parking across the street.
- Nim (10/5): - Clean. Professional and very responsive to clients needs.
- Khee (7/5): It is a good place to experience traditional Japanese hospitality. The food is classic kiseki style. You can’t have them - It has full lake view. Extremely well kept property, but more traditional luxury than modern luxury. The staff are amazing they go out of the way to make things better for us in every way. Lack of privacy for the bathroom facing the lake. While you can see the full view of the lake from the bathroom and bath, people fishing along the piers can also see you. But the staff were quick to offer us a makeshift screen divider.
- Verdesca (8/5): -
- Emma (10/5): Amazing, Relaxing Ryokan Stay - Everything was amazing, the staff are so friendly, and could communicate with us in English which was appreciated. Food was delicious, we opted for the vegan menu, presentation and attention to detail were great. We stayed in a Japanese style room and had meals in our room, the futon beds were comfortable, the in room onsen and massage chair made for a relaxing stay. The room had beautiful views of the lake and staying here was an experience I won’t forgot, worlds away from the crowds of Tokyo and Osaka. Nothing, I wish we could have stayed longer
- Erica (8/5): -
- Hsinghsia (10/5): -
- Chien-Chung Wang (9/5): -
- teri (10/5): Absolutely fantastic - Exceptional meal and service
- Karen (9/5): Perfect 2 nights after the city - Exceeded my expectations. High levels of service. Friendly staff. Wonderful views. Clean and comfortable . Relaxed in our traditional yukata. Enjoyed the private and hotel Onsens. Wonderful trip to Hikone castle & gardens. The food was traditional & quite intense for us but fabulously presented.
- ERRAZI (10/5): - Premium service. Even five stars hotels couldn’t provide this level of care and attention. 10/10
- Dexter (10/5): A perfect retreat to restore and refresh my body and spirit. - The room view of Lake Biwa was spectacular. The room was a traditional Japanese style and very beautiful. I especially appreciated the massage chair for my sore back, and then the in-room soaking tub on the lanai. My back is feeling very well thank you! The bicycle was a bit old and the seat uncomfortable.
- Maya (10/5): - The staff was extremely kind and caring. There is a shuttle to and from the train station which is practical. The view was beautiful and it was very peaceful. If you don't have a car it can be difficult to explore the area around the hotel.
- Gwen (9/5): Superb -
- Roland (10/5): - Very nice view of the lake. Very helpful staff. The rooms have a private onsen hot tub on the balcony. The rooms have tatami and are set up to sleep on the floor. You can request a bed frame to elevate the futon, but it's better to request a bed when making the reservation (although you may enjoy sleeping on a futon, Japanese style).
- Wang (8/5): Nice stay but the food is just average -
- Todd (10/5): Highly recommend for an authentic ryokan experience with an in room onsen and massage chair - Incredible ryokan experience! We loved the tranquil scenery which overlooked Lake Biwa. Breakfast and dinner were exceptional and traditional. We stayed two nights and the meals were never repeated. We loved the in room outdoor onsen overlooking the lake and the massage chair was a nice touch. A very relaxing stay. The staff was very friendly and really tried to speak English to us. We had no communication barriers. Will definitely return and highly recommend this ryokan. Very memorable experience.
- Park (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were very friendly, and the facilities were clean, which made my stay very pleasant. Nothing
- Alexander (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christopher (9/5): Superb - We loved the private bath as well as the spacious and traditional room. Having a massage chair looking out over Lake Biwa was an added bonus. The staff were also very friendly, responsive, and kind. There was not much to dislike about Ryokan Beniayu. To nitpick, we thought the roasted beef we ordered as an add-on to our set could have been more tender and juicy.
- Kenneth (7/5): Good -
- Sau Lung (10/5): -
- John (9/5): This was a romantic Valentines Day treat for ourselves that did not disappoint. - It took us a long time to find a ryokan online that might offer a traditional and peaceful atmosphere at reasonable rates, and our search paid off. Ryokan Beniayu is somewhat remote and is not near busy tourist attractions, but for relaxing, watching birds, enjoying the lake (fantastic sunset view from the bath and room), and tasting some delicious foods this was better than expected. And our private outdoor bath was wonderful, too! We appreciated being welcomed so warmly. A nice stop between Kanazawa and Kyoto, even in the waning winter. Being a little remote is both a pro and a con. The furnishings and decor were a bit dated/in need of refreshing.
- Gretchen (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the furo on the balcony so we could enjoy a private soak while the rain was falling outside our balcony.
Breakfast and dinner were both terrific.
We were pleasantly surprised when we decided to take a rest day from our travels and stay in for most of the day while it rained, and they provided lunch for us.
Loved the artworks, especially the vases.
- Ian (9/5): Superb -
- Linda (10/5): A place to go if you want to get away from it all - Lovely view of the lake, amazing service, and nice, mature guests Nothing
- Christine (10/5): - This place was an experience. The staff were so nice and friendly. The room was romantic and comfortable. The food was authentic Japanese style. We loved it!
- Tse (9/5): Superb - 1. Facility
2. Onsen
3. Food
4. Service Pricey
- Matthew (9/5): Pleasant ryokan by lake Biwa, accessible by train (and short shuttle ride). - Food was very nice, got to try a lot of unique dishes we wouldn’t have had otherwise. Really loved the rice as simple as that is. Personal onsen was very enjoyable and relaxing. It fit two people comfortably. The staff were super friendly and attentive. The shower was outside (next to the private onsen). It was very cold during our stay, so showering outside was not very enjoyable.
- Wendy (9/5): An amazing experience that we can see the lake while having onsen. The meal is good too!! - Onsen in the private room None
- Damian (8/5): A beautiful experience - Having not been to a place like this previously it was difficult to know what to expect. We suspected the room & private bath would be nice and the surrounding area would be peaceful, beside the water and in a nice quiet village. Well, it was all that and so much more. The food was truly stunning and the staff genuinely went out of their way at every opportunity to make sure our stay was enjoyable. If you're looking for a recharge weekend within hire car distance from Osaka/Kyoto I'd recommend you consider Ryokan Beniayu for 1-2 nights. It would be difficult to fault them on anything. It was such a beautiful experience. The only thing I could say is there were few moments when we felt a little awkward/uncomfortable being treated like a higher class, when we're not, we just wanted a special weekend away.
- Frank (10/5): Nice - The hotel has a very nice view of Lake Biwa especially for the sunset. The space of the room is not huge but it perfectly fit a family of 4 with open air hot spring bath. The public onsen is also good and quite with nice view. Ard 45-55 mins drive to Gransnow Obuibuki
- Gary (10/5): - Stayed within the grounds so being isolated wasn’t a problem
- Zi (9/5): Superb -
- Scotcher (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful stay. The staff were so so friendly and helpful, the onsen was fantastic and the food was exceptional.
- Kong (10/5): Couldn’t be happier - Very nice facility, fantastic view, exceptional service! NA
- Piotr (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location, beautiful view of the lake, possibility of observing wild birds. Delicious food. Above all, the wonderful people who run this ryokan. We felt very special there. Nothing
- Cormac (10/5): A gorgeous Ryokan on the shores of Lake Biwa well worth the trip! - Amazing location, very friendly and accommodating staff, excellent facilities, gorgeous view of the lake and birds, relaxing indoor and outdoor onsen, sauna, massage chair and private outdoor bath in the room. I had to leave, I wish I could stay forever!
- Cemile (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kalsy (9/5): Peaceful and serene surroundings. Love being pampered! - Everything! Felt very pampered by host. Excellent service staff. The weather, would be good to go during cooler weather and can walk around the lake.
(10/5): One of the Best! - Meals were exceptional and the experience treasure our memory for years to come. Almost everything, meals, location, services, etc.
- Katy (9/5): Peaceful and perfect stay - Amazing staff and service, made us feel at home. Comfortable room, amazing open-air onsen. Binoculars and massage chair included. Great meals, fresh food, delicate presentation and rich taste. Firefly tour is great (only wish to be longer and if possible one more site?). Car-friendly! We dont have to worry about the car. The staff even welcomed us with a gift for our honeymoon :) View is great except during onsen (the bars blocking the sight..) the futons are a bit smaller than I expected, but still very comfortable. The location is far from town but that's why the whole experience is so peaceful.
- Trevor (10/5): A beautiful authentic Japanese Ryokan experience in a beautiful setting with the kindest and friendliest staff - It is off the traditional tourist routes, it provides an authentic Japanese Ryokan experience in the most beautiful location. I also cannot say enough about the kind and friendly staff - we were treated like royalty. They think of everything even providing you with a telescope and information on the birds around the lake, to a massage chair, outside hot tub etc. the food was authentic and delicious served in our rooms. I can highly recommend a stay here. Wish we had time to fit in an extra night Cannot think of anything
- Daniel (10/5): Wonderful traditional style ryokan in a gorgeous location with amazing staff. - The staff were so kind and helpful. The location was beautiful. The room was lovely and traditional. The bath was so relaxing. The food was delicious!
- Nancy (6/5): Pleasant - very interesting and good meals
good staff
great location the room had an unpleasant smell - like sewage
murky water in the onsen
- Gerald (9/5): Superb -
- Tsz Chui (10/5): - My husband and I recently stayed at this hotel for 4 days and 3 nights, and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay. The hotel offers an array of amenities, including an indoor onsen and outdoor onsens on each floor. The onsen was clean, well-maintained and provided the perfect way to unwind after a long day.
One of the highlights of our stay was the delicious breakfast and dinner that were served every day. The hotel offered a different variety of dishes each day, and we were impressed with the quality and presentation of the food. The meals were a perfect blend of traditional Japanese cuisine and modern twists, and we looked forward to every meal.
The staff at the hotel were friendly and welcoming, and they were able to speak English which made our stay much more comfortable. They were always available to assist us with our needs and provided valuable recommendations for local attractions and restaurants.
Overall, our stay at this hotel was excellent. We enjoyed every corner of the hotel, from the beautifully designed rooms to the serene onsen facilities. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a relaxing and enjoyable stay in Japan.
- Yi (10/5): Exceptional - 1. staffs are nice to help you for anything
2.scene is good
3.room is clean
- Josephine (8/5): - My second time staying at Beniayu after about 10 years. Perhaps it was due to COVID that the experience did not feel as personal as before but the staff were generally polite and helpful. There were multiple foreign staff to perhaps help with communicating with foreign travellers but I felt that it kind of distorted the "Ryokan experience". However, its still a recommended accomodation.
- Jz (10/5): Exceptional -
- George (10/5): Wonderful place n People - Incredible service provided during our first night Jan 25th driving from Kansai International Airport encountering Snow Storm, Mr Yamamoto from Ryokan waited until after midnight for our arrival. He further prepared our dinner since we have been driving for almost 6 hours!
- Choon (10/5): Definitely worth the trip 👍 - Very unique and impressive interior design with tatami flooring everywhere, even in lift. Absolutely nothing. Really enjoyed my stay there.
- Katie (10/5): Onsen with nice view of Biwa Lake! - Nice view from lobby room and onsen.
Dinner and breakfast are excellent
Nice room design and service
Massage chair in room, great coffee in room
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was a great place to stay for the traditional Japanese ryokan experience. Our room was immaculate and very nicely designed. The open air bath was a delight, and the massage chair in the room was an added bonus. The kaiseki meal (traditional Japanese multi course meal) was very good, albeit slightly expensive. The staff were all very friendly and did everything they could to make our stay pleasant, even though we don't speak Japanese. We also appreciated the free shuttle bus service to and from the train station.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Service mind staffs. We did have comfortable stay.
- Verified traveler (2/5):
- sam (10/5): Indoor onsen with lake view - Massage chair in the room was a nice touch. Staff were very helpful. Even helped us to clean our soiled shoes from hiking. Room facing lake was very peaceful. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. Only issue is salmon was used in many dishes (maybe due to the cheapest plan that I have chosen)
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing lakeside view and service - The onsen hotel stands on the northeastern side of Lake Biwa and each room offers a quiet and magnificent view of the lake. I love the in-room massage chair as I can relax for however long I like after soaking myself in the onsen. I hope to visit it again!
