Guest Reviews
- Daniela (9/5): -
- Jennifer (8/5): A good stay. - Great location, fantastic historic building, comfortable beds. No vent in the bathroom caused so much steam it warmed up the room and made everything inthe bathroom wet.
- Scanlon (10/5): - Central location. Loved everything
- Alan (5/5): The lounge, restaurant and bar areas were quite pleasant but the bedroom was poorly decorated. - We used the restaurant for one evening meal. It was OK. Our room was very poorly decorated. The window area was poor. It all needs to be refurbished. The view looked on to a blank wall. Only one chair in a double room.
- Heinz (7/5): -
- Lars (9/5): -
- Jeanne (10/5): -
- Allan (2/5): Wished we hadn’t bothered to stay in Stirling - Central location Dated hotel Long past its glory days
Extremely difficult to find car park which was very poorly signposted in a crazy one way system!
- Lisa (4/5): - The staff was very nice and the location is good. It was also possible to add another person to the room after booking. Thick carpet, there is no chance, it's actually clean. There was mold in some spaces on the carpet, windows couldn't be closed, bathroom was not very clean (also no toilet brush available, and there were stains from the previous guest). All breakfast options we got, were very fatty.

- Kim (9/5): Wonderful location with a very friendly staff that made it very inviting. - Historical hotel, centrally located downtown. Pub and bar connected to the facility. No WiFi in the rooms - but considering the age of the establishment that might be a good thing.
- Hank (9/5): I'd take this anytime over local chain competition. - on bike tour, tavelodge quoted £200 as I arrived on spec, but staff suggested to check the local independents and specifically this one. Ballroom size room, nice to take bike and unpack and sit in a chair with low table. 50 yards from centre and food places and late 11pm sainsburys local, so I missed out on their restaurant in favour of a vietnamese which tickled my curiosity. Huge place old building WIFI did not reach my room, they warn about this.
- Anna (10/5): Excellent hotel with lots of history, ancient charm and excellent service. - I really enjoyed my stay especially the professional approach, care and kindness of Jordana at the reception. She was so helpful, gave us lots of information about how to get around Stirling - she made our stay a great memory !
Check-In und -Out gingen problemlos.
- Patricia (7/5): More than Adequate - Conveniently located offered parking staff accommodating No internet in the rooms this is a necessity now
- Toner (9/5): - Great central location, lovely food The room could have been a bit warmer
- Travellor26 (8/5): Ideal for sightseeing in Stirling - Excellent location in the centre of Stirling. Free and secure parking. Spacious room with king size bed. Very comfy. Quiet. I booked last minute and got a good price. The hotel could do with some updating. Furniture in the room is worn, the chair was dirty. Blinds couldn't be closed properly. Shower didn't work (I took a bath which was fine, tough).
- Janet (1/5): -
- Janet (6/5): Rustic & Quaint - Location in Central Stirling was great.
Public areas were welcoming & traditional. Very warm & toilets were very clean.
Handy parking area to rear of hotel.
Lift to all floors. Single room on third floor had a lumpy bed. Housekeeping did not appear to have been in the room for this 5 night stay, as waste basket was never emptied.
Reception was slow as only 1 person there who had to do a lot, including triggering the car park gate.
- Morello (8/5): Enjoyed the hotel and staff were very nice! - Convience to everything . Restaurant food and service was great! So noisy! Streets were full of screaming and hollering people all hours!
- Amanda (9/5): -
- Gibson (8/5): -
- Stephen (10/5): -
- Jeremy (8/5): Enjoyable and very convenient hotel - Very comfortable room, very convenient, pretty good breakfast
- Violaine 73 (8/5): Bon hôtel vintage à Stirling - Le charme vintage de l'hôtel
Literie confortable
Baignoire
- Ludmila (8/5): -
- Lindsay (4/5): - Convenient for the city centre. Comfortable lounge areas. Room 203. View of a side wall. Area covered in pigeon mess. Cold room. No wifi in the bedrooms.
- Thomas (7/5): -
- Mclean (8/5): - Location and lovely bar and food The view faced a brick wall
- Paul (9/5): Staff couldn’t be more accommodating. Great Bar and restaurant - Staff were exceptionally friendly Stirling town centre is very run down
- Tracey (4/5): Could have been better - The hotel is dated and would benefit from a makeover. The room was adequate but furniture is again dated. The shower was too hot and i was unable to regulate the temperature.
- John (8/5): - lots of stairs not covered by lifts, between floors and entrance
- Debbie (8/5): Great location - Great location with parking. Good restaurants nearby. Steps to car park. No view from room.
- V. Kozhanova (4/5): Ok placed for a short stay. It’s an old hotel that has not been renovated - Nice staff and great location Old and uncomfortable
- Lucy (8/5): -
- Susan (7/5): - Clean, staff friendly and helpful Very dark, small room, no info in the room
- Lola (7/5): -
- Frankie (9/5): - Ideal place to stay
For all amenities
- Vasile Codruti (10/5): - Totul
- Jim (7/5): Once the room situation was resolved, we both enjoyed the stay, no Stella either on tap or tenants l - Location & free parking is great Offered 2 rooms which were terrible , 3rd room was spot on
- Helen (6/5): -
- Leiv Arne (8/5): -
- Jim (10/5): Superb hotel in a central location - Central have booked this hotel 4 times now
- Shaun (3/5): Horrible Rude Staff - The exterior and public rooms are really traditional and have a nice vibe. We arrived as a family of three, hastily welcomed by the staff ; two girls on reception one wearing glasses were absolutely useless and the made me feel most unwelcome. A smile isn’t too much to ask for. If you don’t want to work there I’m sure there are lots of people who’d be happy to replace you and do the job much better.
Got given no guidance on the facilities, was told to fill and form, hastily given the key and directed to the lift with a point of a finger. Didn’t know what time breakfast was, if there was wi-fi (there isn’t any, only in public areas). Got absolutely nada from reception.
It’s a real shame as this hotel genuinely has potential, however the staff make to feel as though you’d be better off in a Travelodge.
- Vivien (7/5): Under new management with lots of work to do, but I would stay again. - An historic building, full of character. The assistance of some staff, including the co-owner was very good. They serve a great breakfast, lovely sausages! The mattress was dreadful, I could only get hot water from the shower by turning the bath cold tap on! The thin partition wall meant my neighbour’s 6.15 am alarm woke me up. Some staff were quite brusque.
- John (9/5): -
- John (8/5): - Location was great and very good staff Furniture a little tired and only 1 sashes of coffee and milk
- Helen (10/5): Lovely central hotel with real charm - Very central and close to railway station
- Conlan (8/5): -
- Caroline (1/5): Slecht! Niet boeken! - I booked the Golden Lion Hotel in Stirling knowing that the rooms were somewhat dated and that the beds might be a bit firm. However, what I encountered went far beyond anything I could have expected. I have never seen such a filthy hotel and room in my life.
There was dust everywhere, the windows were so dirty with bird droppings that you could barely see outside, and the bathroom was full of mould, the toiletseat was broken. There was an insufficient amount of toilet paper, and the towels provided were clearly meant for just one person — hastily hung and far from adequate. In addition, absolutely everything in the room and throughout the hotel was worn out to a level that makes it unacceptable to rent these rooms out in good conscience.
I reported all of this to the reception and the management. It did not feel like it was the first time they had received complaints about the condition of the rooms and the hotel. To support my negative review, I am sharing the photos below
- Sheryl (6/5): Ok but far from perfect - The hotel entrance , the reception staff, the location was fantastic. Very opulent hotel with lovely furnishings until arriving at room . Room very tired , no welcome biscuits , no glasses for water.
- Fenella (8/5): We loved the hotel but felt a few modern conveniences were missing. The customer service was great and the hotel is love - Location and classic style also having a human at the front desk. Room was a nice size . Very clean No internet in the room . Coffee and tea station was in a difficult location. No water glasses in the room. Heat was minimal and the bathroom was freezing the towel heater never went on. The bed was short and very small, queen size should be automatic no extra charge. Tv was way too small and connection to cable provider spotty.
- James (8/5): Centrally placed hotel, pleasant staff and a good nights sleep. - Attended at the hotel the previous day to request champagne for the room as a surprise for my wife as we were celebrating our Ruby anniversary. The manager Gary attended reception and took the matter in hand. Left me his card so i could contact him just before our arrival to arrange the same. On arrival the surprise was as arranged with strawberries and snacks thrown in. The room was clean and tidy. Lots of storage space which can be lacking in some more modern hotels. We had a very pleasant stay in what you have to appreciate is an older hotel. We found it good value for money.
- kirstine (8/5): -
- Donald (5/5): Not great - Location Breakfast was terrible. Service was slow. Hotel generally looks very tired. Poor housekeeping
- Laura (10/5): Great location, historic building, fabulous staff - Excellent location in the heart of town. Very nice attached pub and restaurant with enticing menu. Historic building.
- Michael (8/5): The Golden Lion is a traditional hotel in the city centre close to the railway station. - Close to the train station and city centre facilities. Prompt and helpful reception. Comfortable and very quiet room. Dining room staff pleasant and helpful. Excellent breakfast although I did have to wait a few minutes for some items. This may seem a small niggle - and it's a common problem with many hotels - but I would have appreciated some simple instructions about how to use the shower. There were two control taps but it was not obvious which tap did what. I ended up having a very, very, very hot shower because I couldn't work out how not to have a very, very, very hot shower.
- Mags (6/5): The hotel was very Scottish which we really liked but it needs updating. - The hotel staff were excellent helping us with the car park, and dinner and breakfast. The room was average and the breakfast was average. But this was not a reflection on the staff they were excellent. the room and the breakfast.
- Richard (4/5): Faded glory - Good location Very tired hotel , no Wi-Fi in the room , breakfast was unsatisfactory and trying to get the car out of the car park was a joke.
- Vincent (8/5): -
- James (10/5): - Great Location
- Ed (4/5): Over priced for hotel requiring a lot of TLC - The hotel is very central to Stirling Parking area felt like a derelict site, the hotel it’s self was very out of date/ tired in its appearance, our room was bang average with old grumpy windows and zero view. The elevator needed some attention so we didn’t feel comfortable using it
- Stuart (5/5): A bit of a shame as the hotel had obviously seen better days. - It had parking and you could see how lovely the building used to be! Run down, tired. Completely inappropriate music in restaurant for families (explicit lyrics). Staff looked and sounded so bored and uninterested.
Poor quality breakfast, evening meal was ok.
- Timothy (6/5): Great central location. Public areas are a little tired. But room was clean decorated and nice enough - Central city location. With private car park. Clean room. Dining areas and public areas rather dak and tired.
- Bacon (9/5): -
- Sheila (8/5): - The location was central and because we were using public transport it was user friendly. The meals were plentiful and good. The staff, with the exception of the breakfast waitress, were very serious and glum. A smile makes such a difference!
Also I would like to see access to a fridge, because when I asked it was denied.
- Davit (4/5): - Location and parking is good
The bar is nice but expensive No wifi in the rooms
Shower was terrible, either cold or scalding hot
Rooms are a little out dates
- James (10/5): -
- Walter (6/5): - Lovely hotel Paid for breakfast, waited 45 minutes and still waiting
- Shelagh (8/5): It met my requirements and the staff were so friendly. - My meal was excellent. The salmon was beautifully braised tho it took a while to come. I thought they’d gone out to catch it!
I rather liked the retro nature of the dining room and the message beside the piano was funny. My room was a tad cold as it was a very cold evening. The CH response to being turned up was patchy.
- Yann (8/5): - Emplacement
- Vicki (7/5): - Cronies bar was beautiful the staff were friendly The bed was too small and wasn’t comfortable
- Stefano (8/5): -
- Martin (6/5): - Close to city centre No parking
- Scherer (8/5): -
- Kaly (7/5): -
- Richard (4/5): Stafff and location were good however the decor and cleanliness of the hotel was average to poor. - Location and parking Cleanliness
- Geraldine (5/5): We enjoyed our stay overall just few problems with the dated room. - Location was excellent and we enjoyed the bar area Jenga was a bonus. Bedroom very dated. Bathroom door kept sticking so very difficult to open and close. Room very hot.we
- Rob (8/5): -
- Matthew (3/5): Never again - Restaurant and bar was more than expected and staff was very nice The room was cold dirty and the bed was so uncomfortable with springs digging in every part of my body couldn’t sleep for the 2 nights I was there
- JIM (10/5): -
- Stuart (9/5): Great place for a short stay. - Great location, staff were helpful, nice and profesional. Room was a good size, comfy bed and perfect temperature. We stayed on the 3rd floor. Only bad points where no wifi in the room which was no big deal really. Toilet was not properly cleaned won't go into details but the rest of the room was spotless though.
- Jonathan (4/5): -
- mhairi768 (10/5): Great lunch - Really nice food.
Murray served us and was very lovely, great service.
- 3eaf58a6e8b571907f89f762c267bcc6 (10/5): Great stay great room and great breakfast - Great location Every was great at the property

- 74d2b0bbda757346c0d85747dca4b060 (5/5): Only paid £63 but not worth anymore needs a complete refurbish if they are going to attract people to stay in their esta - Good location A bit dated very small tv and lot of stations not available because not reception. Also no WiFi in bedroom poor show

- nicolafP1813ZX (4/5): Worst afternoon tea ever - We booked an our afternoon tea and as requested gave 24hrs notice .
Unfortunately, the tea was very disappointing.
The restaurant was not particularly busy but having placed our scone and drinks order we waited in the region of 20mins for our drinks to arrive, a further 10 for the food and another 10 for side plates to be provided. I can only assume that the restaurant and bar were under staffed.
While we did not particularly mind that the savoury course was only sandwiches, with no wraps, we do object to being served stale sponge cakes and scones that were quite obviously several days old, they shattered in cutting and were hard in the middle.
Needless to say, these were not consumed and our server was informed of the state of these items and asked to pass this on to the kitchen.
The young lady did apologise and proceeded to ask if we wanted anything further. Obviously due to the above disappointment we did not. No one came from the kitchen or supervisory staff to acknowledge the complaint.
Considering that this afternoon tea was booked in advance as requested it is unacceptable to serve stale food.
The use of our gifted voucher was supposed to be a nice closure to our holiday. Unfortunately, it was not the experience we had hoped for.
An email was sent as a follow up but no response was received.
