Guest Reviews
- Tanya (10/5): - Had a great 5 night stay, our room was clean and neat, bathroom and showers clean and well kept daily. Loads of options for entertainment and food within a 15-30 minute walk. There’s a Tim Hortons downstairs, which was really convenient.
- Vladimir (10/5): - Great place for the price. Very well kept. Good service at the front desk. Only thing it needs is a fridge (a shared one would have also been ok) and a microwave.
- Fezan (10/5): - Quiet and great
- Abhishek (10/5): - Lovely campus to move around and located close to seashore
- Christine Priyanthika Sandamali (10/5): - The bed is so comfortable. Safety of the room is good.
- Samuel (8/5): - It was a pleasure to stay at Saint Mary's Loyola Residence this summer in July for 10 days. It resides close to Point Pleasant Park, the area is tree laden and gorgeous. While I was there, the cafeteria was open, along with a coffee shop with breakfast options, and a convenience store, among other options. I especially loved the staff working at the main desk 24/7. So lovely and kind. One more note, everything was so very clean. The building itself was lovely .
- Xinyu (10/5): - The best accommodation for summer in Halifax
- Aaron (10/5): - The check-in was easy, the staff was polite, helpful, and made me feel very welcomed. The location is situatated in a beautiful & quiet neighborhood. The building shower and washrooms were well-kept. The property featured a dining hall (very affordable), vending mavhines, a store for small goods and a tim hortons thats fully serviceable. 5 outta 5
- Catherine (6/5): - We just found one microwave in the lounge and nothing in our room to keep food so it was hard to cook something. The room was hot but big and clean. The beds were confortable.
- Yong qiu (4/5): - A few years ago we stayed at this dormitory with free breakfast. Now the breakfast has additional charge. There is no coffee or tea. We are not going to stay there in the future.
- Paul (8/5): - As dorm rooms go this was pretty good. There were fans due to the heat wave, and the area was convenient to walk to downtown - probably about 25 minutes. The beds were comfortable and the view took in the Halifax harbour. You also got a birds eye view of the athletics field and we were treated to several mens league soccer games. Kind of a cool element.
The shared bathroom was clean and there was a separate single shower room. There were few people in our pod but there was never a wait for the facilities.
The only negative points were: One of the elevators opened reluctantly and we learned to avoid it in case we got trapped; and the hallway to our pod of rooms had the feel of a prison - low security prison to be sure, but there was a vibe. That said the whoe experience was quite nice. There's laundry facilities readily available on another floor. Parking is right outside the building. If you're travelling on a budget or with a small family this might be a great option for you.
- Maria (8/5): - Less expensive than a hotel. It was clean , safe, beautiful and quiet
- Brian (8/5): - It was quite warm in the room, even with a fan going.
The bed was a bit hard. If I stay again I will bring some padding.
- Augustine (10/5): - Good
- Olufikunayomi (10/5): - I really enjoyed my stay there and at Mary’s will always have a special place in my heart for the unforgettable time I had there! Dreams come true in Halifax, especially when you stay at St Mary’s!
- Chantal (6/5): - I didn’t like the lack of airflow.
- Angela (10/5): - Friendly staff. Exceptionally clean rooms complete with linens, towels and soap. Comfortable common spaces. Great value!! Recommend this property.
- Ryne (10/5): - Great views!
- Sze Nga (8/5): - woke up at 8 in the morning because of the game in the sports ground
- Jinchi (8/5): - Quiet, convenient, close to sites of visit
- Murali (10/5): - Affordable and decent
- Cole (8/5): - Good for the price
- Cliffe (8/5): - Was a wonderful experience
- Michael (6/5): - Internet non existent
Accommodation good for the price
- Ayesha (6/5): - The only downside to this place was the no A/C. Definitely not a deal breaker, but it was hot. Other than that, it was good for a two night stay. Close to downtown and easy to get to and from.
- Glen (8/5): - The room was solid. It was good to have my own space. The shower and bathroom were both good. The room was very hot however. There was a small fan, but it did little to combat the heat. The staff were efficient, but didn't interact with me much. Also, this isn't a negative for the accommodation but I would have preferred if there were more people around to chat to. It felt pretty isolating at times.
- Lindsey (8/5): - Everything about our stay and the value compared to other accommodations was GREAT! The only downfall was that the rooms weren’t connected directly to the building’s ac (seemed to only be in the hallways), but our room did at least have a window that could open and a circulating fan.
- Amanda (10/5): - Staff were very friendly and helpful. Will be booking again
- Xinyu (10/5): - It’s so fun to stay here. Best accommodation for people who travel alone
- Jeanne (8/5): - We stayed on the top floor facing the city centre and the view was lovely.
- Gordon (6/5): - No AC, Just a fan. Staff unfriendly
- Amanda (6/5): - A very basic accomodation. Budget friendly. Beds were not the most comfortable, airflow in the room was minimal. Very clean. A fan was provided for added comfort. No kettle or coffee maker available. Microwave available.
- Gregory (6/5): - There were rats/mice that I saw around the dorms. Staff was very nice and accommodating and the rooms were quiet and safe.
- Tara (10/5): - Great for the price- cool view
- keith (10/5): - Great option visiting Halifax.
- bing (10/5): - it is affordable,safe and quite,the staff are friendly and helpful,the bed is a little bit small,totally a pleasant stay,recommend
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great value accommodation in South Halifax. The rooms are basic and a bit gloomy but the bed was very comfortable and everything was pretty clean. It would've been super helpful if there was a small fridge available to use but the microwave in the lounge was handy. Helpful staff and good public transport links, about 30 minute walk to the main boardwalk area
- Abdullah Mesut (8/5): - It’s very convenient accommodation if you just looking for somewhere to sleep and take a shower. Overall, if you don’t mind seeing bunch of hair on the floor, place is pretty clean. I recommend getting indoor shoes. Staff is really helpful and so nice. You have to walk pretty much everywhere but it’s really close to downtown(15-20mins). If you are a solo traveler with low budget, this is where you stay.
- Fu (8/5): - Nostalgic
- Amy (8/5): - The room was very basic which I expected but the wifi was annoying as you had to connect EVERY time you unlocked your phone… just a heads up.
The room was also overly warm for June so thankfully there was a table fan in the room or I would not have been able to sleep from the heat.
- Binni (8/5): - For a university residence it was fine. Old style but clean.
- Robin (8/5): Great choice for family under budget - Definitely a good value for this price. We got a 3 bedroom apartment (no common sitting area though), no TV but I don't use hotel TV anyway. There is a full kitchen so good for family with kids.
Also keep in mind there is no A/C. They provide a fan for each room. So check weather condition and make sure you are prepared.
- Ines (6/5): - The rooms are simply decorated and large. This was a good place to land for one night with kids. The washroom needed to be cleaned better and that was disappointing. The breakfast that was included was very good and it was fun to explore the university.
- Catherine (8/5): Will gladly stay here again - Our family was completely satisfied staying at the St. Mary's residence and will do so again when visiting Halifax next time. Perfect location to access the downtown area. Breakfast was wonderful!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I liked the library and the printing services it offers
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Best price in town. In the center ouf it all. Safe and quiet.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The accommodations are unique because they are dorms of St Mary's University Residence. It is unique to be on an academic campus.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice quiet neighbourhood, lot of stuff close by, don’t forget to take cooler or small refrigerator with you. No AC. Nights were colder during our stay so table fan worked well. Breakfast was good.
- Kimberly R (8/5): - Visiting family in NS and stayed here. Really a unique experience. The only issue, there was a musty odor in rooms and in the building in general. Maybe because of hot weather? Some air fresheners might have helped.
- J (8/5): - Very basic, but cosy dorm rooms. The room was extremely hot, but we were ale to use the fans prepared for us. Excellent breakfast!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Their way to circulate air in the room - they provide a fan and two windows to open. It did not help.
I believe I should have been told before I booked that the mattress was a brick. I sleep on a firm mattress but their mattress was beyond firm. I woke all night to rearrange to find a spot to get comfortable. And the pillows were not much better. They were hard also. I did not have a restful stay. When I checked out I told the staff my opinion of their beds. They told me they were sorry about the bed.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Beautiful university setting - It was perfect place for me to stay.It was convenient and only a few minutes for my meeting area in South end Halifax.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The bed sheets smelt like they had sat in the washer for a few days before drying them.
Other than that
Everything else was great!!
Breakfast was delicious !
Parking excellent.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The room was not the same as the one depicted on Expedia. It was smaller and stuffy. The staff were very nice though, the wifi was great, and it was a nice and quiet place to stay the night.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice breakfast included. Great value for low cost.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was very clean and the staff was very pleasant. The breakfast was great. The only thing that would have been nice is air conditioning and and few dishes and cutlary in the kitchen.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This summer residence was listed as having a kitchen. However, when we checked in, we found that nothing was available besides a stove and a fridge. It was useless. Other that, the rooms are clean and spacious, but no common space. Free breakfast was quite good. Communication with the staff was not pleasant regarding the kitchen issue. They insisted it was my fault that I did not understand a kitchen by default should have nothing but a stove and fridge.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I like the infrastructure, staff was very welcoming, the accessibility to nearby places of interest by bus was very convenient, the rooms are well lit and clean. The breakfast was good. Its worth it for the price paid
I don't like that although washroom was very clean but the ventilation was very poor
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great service polite employees , clean room! Great view of track
- Sam (10/5): - The staff was friendly and helpful (although there was a bit of an issue finding our room, it worked out), the location was VERY secure and clean. Breakfast and parking were included which you just cannot beat in downtown Halifax in the summer for the price!!
- Nin (10/5): - Amazing staff nice breakfast clean room, except the pillow. It smelt like someone's sweat..... i had to put 3 towels on it.. . Other than that, it is 10/10.
Will recommend!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location. For some reason, I thought I'd booked a better deal with this property, and was surprised by the cost. But on double checking my Expedia itinerary, that's what i agreed to, so I can't complain there. 147 a night is a touch steep for student dorms. But then again, you're steps from downtown, and if my stay had been longer the kitchinette might have been useful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The location was good and the nightly rate was affordable. However, the co-ed dorms are not good for women. As a woman, I felt very uncomfortable using the same washrooms and shower rooms as male strangers, and also felt uncomfortable having to walk to these facilities in my pajamas in the middle of the night. There should be female segregated dorms for women who are uncomfortable being in the same dorm as strange men. I would only return to this facility if there were segregated female dorms.
- Raymond (8/5): Convenient, Not Overly Fancy Stay in Halifax - The accommodations were clean. There is a kitchen but no utensils, pots/pans, or utensils. The breakfast is good, with plenty of options. It was typical of what you would expect in a college dining hall, especially since that’s exactly what it is. The accommodations are located at the southern end of the city, so near Dalhousie University as well. It’s about 20 minutes or more of a walk to the waterfront and downtown attractions but there are bus stops nearby.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The Residence was very well kept, inside and out. Parking was free and easy access. Breakfast was good and the room very spacious.
- Keith (10/5): - Room was very good. Better than I expected for university accommodation. Very clean bed very comfortable if only a single. Breakfast was good & hot. & students & staff very welcoming.
- Brad (8/5): Good place to stay while on a budget - It was good, no complaints.
- Kirsten (6/5): Nice Staff, But it is Just a Dorm Room - Staff was super and very reactive and helpfull.
Needs coffee and tea available earlier (none before 7:30, so if you have early meetings, you are out of luck), maybe a little pot in the common reception area.
Could not get Wifi in my room.
- Lois (10/5): Great stay - I had a single private room. It worked great for me but was definitely not the room in the photo. The shared washroom/shower facilities were cleaned daily and never a problem having to wait. The room was equipped with fan, 3 sets of towels, hangers, soap , glasses and book with suggestions of things in the area. There were a few noises at night from other travelers but really they didn’t bother me. The breakfast was great with lots of choices. I really enjoyed the yogurt bar. The staff were very helpful. WiFi worked well and parking was just out the door( free). I was in the Loyale building so lucked out to have use of elevators to get to my room. Great stay for the price and I will be back. I was there to visit family in the hospital so it was a great location.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very specious. Wish it was available year round!
Need fan in bathroom
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was great fun to have the student experience. We loved the cafeteria dining.
We had stayed in 7 different rentals for the past 17 days and this was the first unit without TV. That’s normal for student accommodations, just not something we had thought about. We missed watching the evening news.
- Terry (8/5): - Good place to stay. Nice breakfirst, close Halifax Harbour front, etc.
- Billy (6/5): - Extremely hot room with absolutely no ventillation
- Lynda (10/5): - Would have been more co forysble if the rooms had sir conditioning
- Amrit (4/5): Bad experience- Mice infested - For god's sake, the apartment had mice. When complained, they moved us to a different one which also had mice. We paid for 3 bedroom apartment, only two were opened to us as we were two people. They charged us for the kitchen that didn't have any utensils at all, not even a pot, or a knife or cutlery, basically totally empty kitchen so e had to buy our own pots and pans as we were staying there for over three weeks. Breakfast was OK but would start serving at 7:30 which was too late for us as we had to get to our work before 8:00 and they wouldn't let you bring in even your coffee from Tim Hortons which was next door. The coffee at breakfast was horrible, almost undrinkable. I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay there again.
- Skywalker (6/5): - Poor check in--two check in clerks
Four people in line
Had to wait fifteen minutes whilst one of the clerks did nothing
- Rick (10/5): - We enjoyed a hot breakfast in cafe. I will be back.
- Karina (8/5): Halifax 💕 - The room was perfect for what we needed. Building is on the warm side, loved the fan availability at the front desk (hair blow dryer as well). We had linen, bathroom towels and a shared bathroom which needed cleaning or at least garbage taken out. Someone left wet dirty towels on the floor and in tub and we’re left there the duration of stay. I would make sure in the morning to tidy a bit for my comfort and for sister in law. The front desk staff very accommodating. Overall felt safe. Breakfast time needed extra staff due to the amount of tourist so just be patient. I’m definitely staying here again!
- Niki (6/5): - A little too spartan for me. It would be nice to have towels in the room - towels required a separate trip to the “laundry room”. Would have been nice to know that when I checked in.
- Ella (8/5): - Nice accommodations however housekeeping wasn’t available when we requested it
- Diana (8/5): - Love that guests have access to so many amenities (laundry, fitness, breakfast, Tim's). Lovely building in a quiet and residential area. Close to bus service.
- Natalia (10/5): - Hi there,
We didn’t get the chance to complain about our stay in your property because we were rushing to check out because our cab was already waiting for us.
Just a couple of things that we wanted to point out..
- the pillow cases smelled like wet dog so we had to remove them
- there was a mouse in one of our bedrooms. Not sure what you’re going to do about that
- there were bottle caps and empty juice packets left underneath our table
Halifax is a beautiful city. We enjoyed our stay it’s just we were not satisfied with our stay in the property.
- Andrea (6/5): - It's an extremely warm building. Yes, you can sign out a fan from the front desk, but still. The windows open a disappointing amount...it's like they might as well not open at all. Our "suite" and shared bathroom very obviously had not been cleaned for a number of days-- floors were dirty, there was old and mouldy fruit left in the lounge that we had to request be removed, etc. Halifax is expensive for accommodations at a hotel, and yes, this is the cheaper option, but I would seriously recommend finding an Airbnb in someone's home if you're on a tight budget. I won't be staying at a uni residence again.
- Yong (10/5): - Everything is OK, but hope electric fan for each room, too hot this summer
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Reasonable accommodation on the price. Recommended the place.
- Mary (6/5): - Proximity to downtown harbor
Poor ventilation
Ask for harbor view
Institutional ck in and no instruction as to where
Building not identified
Food service powdered eggs and packaged muffins quite a disappointing
- Sam (4/5): - Liked the location and the breakfast. The rooms were dated, hot and humid 40 degrees, no ac, fans or circulation. We ended up sleeping in our car.
Not good for families.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Not at all what my family expected and very disappointed how different everything is from the pictures
- Dale (8/5): - I didn't realize until I was checking out that fans were available - the room was stiffling hot.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Rented a three room suite. Two of the three were fine. The third smelled like my hockey bag. The sheets looked clean but they smelled badly. Got new sheets but they stank after a few hours, upon which I realized that the mattress smelled. Otherwise, okay. Fridge, stove, kettle, sink. But no pots pans, plates or cups or utensils, as it is meant to be a place to sleep, not a full on self contained apartment. Breakfast was decent. No A/C. Front desk ran out of electrical fans.
- Valerie (4/5): - It was perfectly fine except the whole building seems to be infested with mice. We stayed on the 2nd floor and the9th floor and saw mice both places.
- Matteo (8/5): - Very nice place to stay. Only thing missing is air conditioning.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very convenient location.
Economical.
Quite warm without AC.
Shower very in need of update.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - No air conditioning room very HOT . Should have atleast fans
- Gia Long (6/5): - its good for the price
- Laura Amanda (8/5): - We had a great experience in the dorms. Fun for everyone!
- Murray (4/5): - This is a basic dorm room plain and simple. It is economical but I wouldn't give it any more than a two star rating. We were in one of the three bedroom units and one of the bedrooms smelled like a gym bag. There is no air conditioning and we were there during the heat wave. We stayed the one night and checked out the next day.
- Shannon (8/5): - The college students at the front desk were wonderful. The accomedations were fine for the price. The only problem was the linens are pretty worn and there is no a/c. It was unseasonably warm during my visit and it was difficult to sleep. But it was cleaner than a hotel would have been at that price.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - good price, separate bedrooms for each person, full kitchen, close to waterfront
- Donnette (8/5): - It was the first time I spent in residence and it was pretty good. I had a clean fairly comfortable room. A good breakfast and helpful staff. It was a little warm but fans were provided. It was quiet and safe. I paid fifty dollars a night. I would do it again
