- Steven (10/5): A great place and excellent food and a nice location with its own woodland will definitely be staying again in the futur - Everything the real fires the atmosphere and the great staff Everything was great
- camilleri (10/5): -
- Helen (7/5): Stay was ok but nothing special - Rooms were of a good size, property was quirky and rustic with original features which we love Service for food was very slow. Waited over 1.5 hours for main meal to be served to our table for evening meal. Breakfast was also a wait too.
- Ros (10/5): An absolutely fantastic place to stay, comfortable, easy access, friendly and absolutely stunning food! Catered brillian - Beautiful property with great history! Low ceilings in parts being 6ft tall! But it really wasn’t a problem!
- Wilson (10/5): Homely great service, will definitely book again. - Really enjoyed the old world charm No dislikes
- Simon (10/5): -
- Adam (4/5): - Grounds were great and very dog friendly Room had a large bug inside. Staff were rude at dinner. Served raw chicken. Hoovering at 08:00 on Sunday morning.
- Becca (8/5): - Staff super attentive! Especially in the restaurant. Head board was loose and moves and banged on wall!
- Peter (10/5): -
- Holly (6/5): Lovely setting, great to stay with a big group, but feel the bedrooms are tired & need redecorating - The food, in particular the daily breakfast was lovely We sadly had moths in our room, once noticing them we could spot 15 in the room and when looking closely at the carpet you could see that it was being eaten by carpet moths. One morning we woke up to moths on the bedding. The shower head in the en-suite bathroom our parents were staying in fell off when the shower was being used! When we checked out the staff asked us how the stay was and whether we wanted to pay the service charge and didn’t seem that concerned about the issues we raised. Disappointing as the restaurant area, food & ground are all lovely. At times we found the staff a little stern and as a result we don’t feel this property is a 4 star hotel.
- Yvette (9/5): Peaceful, chilled and friendly atmosphere - Clean and friendly staff The radiator making a noise through night as though something was hitting it
- Brian (9/5): Comfortable and food excellent. - Meals were excellent. We’re not keen on dog friendly.
- Emma (8/5): Wonderful breakfast, lovely staff. - Hotel, bar and breakfast was amazing. Really enjoyed our stay, would definitely return.

- Christopher (9/5): Marvellous hotel ! - Great friendly welcoming staff, Fantastic Accomodation, wonderful breakfast and set in lovely grounds! Can't fault the hotel or staff! just a little outside bowness approx 3 miles. Wish i'd of enquired about a taxi service into town to complete the experiance! theres always next time!

- Angela (9/5): - Beautiful, clean, comfortable hotel. Pleasant, helpful staff. Breakfast was delicious with lots of variety. Great walk through woods after breakfast. Very welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.
- Michelle (10/5): -
- Dona (8/5): Beautiful, cosy , relaxing get away - The hotel is beautifully designed, cosy log fire , all little details didn’t go unnoticed, the rooms are beautiful and done to a high standard better than some 5* hotels we have stayed in .
The food was amazing, we ate in the evening, good quality ingredients and done to a high standard . There was nothing we did not like about the property , we wouldn’t have the breakfast again, i think that could be better . The drinks are more expensive than anywhere else we have stayed in the lakes. Other than that its beautiful and well designed hotel.
- Janice (10/5): Perfect - Unique, good food Staff were friendly food was excellent.

- Anna (9/5): Lovely stay, excellent staff - History Nothing
- Emma (9/5): Nice stay - Excellent breakfast, lovely room Parking was tricky at times
- Margarita (9/5): - staff friendly and helpful throughout our stay, breakfast/dinner amazing - great selection of delicious well prepared dishes, premises cosy and relaxing-the fireplaces throughout the hotel created a very warm and inviting atmosphere While the overall stay was enjoyable, the room had a window facing directly onto the car park, which offered very little privacy. This made it difficult to fully relax, as the space felt somewhat exposed
- JGraham1990 (4/5): - the room and the food were really lovely. The pub is really cosy. I purchased this as a gift for my parents, I paid prior to their arrival, but when they arrived they were charged again for the room. Which was really disappointing as my dad had to pay it even though it had already been paid for, also, they knew how much I had paid fr the room which isn't something you want common knowledge for a gift. I paid for them to have the room with the big copper bath in and it was quite expensive for the night so I was disappointed that this was their first encounter when they arrived for their stay. I was also unable to pay for their afternoon tea over the phone, I had to transfer the amount to my parents for them to pay for it, again which tarnished it for me as the though of them having a lovely weekend paid for by myself was overcast. I did ring up and query the payment of the room and they refund my dad, but that wasn't the point, it was that I had paid and this was not noted on the booked. I had the confirmation and thought they would arrive and just have to check in and could go to their room.
- Su (10/5): - The atmosphere was warm and friendly A lack of plugs near the bed but not really somerhing to get tol hung up

- smileyfacejulie (8/5): Meals over rated but breakfast is Fab! - Lovely Receptionist and a free moonshine when booking in was a lovely touch. Too many stairs for me as I have trouble walking but a lovely pub and nice rooms. Thought main course was expensive for a meal I found a bit tasteless, lamb chops grizzly and meal a bit flavourless, the chips very pale not crisp at all, pork cheeks chewy but I must say the Breakfast was Brilliant with plenty of choice and oodles of flavour! Bed was comfy and roaring fire in the bar Homely. Didn't bring the dog as thought £30 a bit steep it'll probably put a lot of people off staying if they wish to bring their fur babies with them, they'll choose elsewhere.
- lizelliott2015 (10/5): Excellent hotel - Hotel was beautiful and the staff were really friendly in all areas.. such a beautiful place very homely feeling,
Will most definitely be booking again
- John (10/5): Exceeded expectations and value for money - From the moment we arrived in this beautiful peaceful location, the hotel and staff were so welcoming . Excceded our expectations. Try the short walks in the 72 acres of wood owned by the hotel .
- brian (9/5): Fabulous stay in the lake district - The staff were amazing. The good was fabulous
The location is ideal Nothing to add
- mikegC2130JC (10/5): Warm and welcoming hotel and restaurant. - We came here for afternoon tea. This is not our first visit and we weren't disappointed. The bar and restaurant are warm and welcoming as are the staff. The meal was a set menu but there was a choice of teas and coffees and as much as you can dring (see attached menu). Everything was beautifully prepared, hot and tasty. Afternoon tea in the lakes is never cheap but this is good value and you wont leave hungry. The estate is a drive or taxi ride from Windermere but there is on site free parking if needed. We are fairly local and come for special occasions but if you are in the lakes this place is well worth a visit.
- laurenpF7896FY (10/5): Perfect short stay - Stayed one night for a girls getaway! The room was lovely and comfortable. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was the highlight though, the steak was delicious but the scotch egg on the starter was the absolute highlight!
Really recommend, the free glass of fizz on arrival really started the trip off perfectly
- A3425KAkevinp (4/5): Great restaurant, but rooms badly let down by cleanliness and response from staff - Stayed for one night and unfortunately the room cleanliness was really poor. There were flies in the room, cobwebs in the ceiling corners, and when I checked around the bed area to find where the flies might be coming from it was filthy. There were clumps of hair and heavy dust build up behind and around furniture.
Throughout the night I had to keep killing flies and more kept appearing. The windows were closed so it felt like they were coming from drains or vents, which is pretty concerning in a hotel room.
I raised it with reception and it honestly felt like it was brushed off. I was told they would make a note of it. I even offered photos to help escalate it and again there was very little interest or urgency shown.
It is a real shame because the restaurant is excellent and easily the highlight of the stay. Sadly the rooms clearly need a deep clean and reception customer service needs improving, as issues like this should be taken much more seriously.
- bills830 (10/5): consistent excellence - fifth visit and always received excellent service from all staff. Expectations are now high and never disappointed. Special mention to the Chef for the highest quality meals.
- Yvonnepilgrim3 (10/5): FANTASTIC STAY - Just arrived home after another fantastic stay at the Wild Boar 🐗
We had afternoon tea which was beautiful, well made and filled us for rest of day..
After check in, which was smooth and friendly we went upto our room and WOW room 3, gorgeous, beautiful and with a bath to die for!
Breakfast filled us up for day. Gorgeous freshly cooked food l
Thank you for the birthday card and mini bottle of prosecco in the room, extra special touch.
I say this everytime we go, fantastic hotel, fantastic food and most of all fantastic and friendly staff.
Loved every minute of our stay ❤️

- Jake (10/5): Lovely character filled place to stay - Stayed multiple times now and have absolutely loved it. The day staff and evening resturant staff are amazing, however after a nice meal with great food and atmosphere, popped into Windermere, came back and the bar area was busy and a great atmosphere but the gentlemen member of staff working the bar clearly did not want to be there. Shame to finish the day with a sour taste. Ill still be returning im sure and we'll worth a stay.
- RIOJA1967 (4/5): Noisy dogs and slugs. - We returned to the Wild Boar as we had a wonderful last visit. Sadly this stay was not up to the standards we expected.
Firstly we had a discounted return rate of £130 and they tried to charge the full rate of £169. If I hadn’t of checked, they would have charged. I agree these things happen. But please check your bill. It was rectified.
We were in room 20, which is an interconnecting room by the means of a door. There were dog/s in the next room barking and it was clearly audible followed by the owner telling the dog to shush!
I went to reception to log a complaint as it was 9.30pm. In front of me was another customer complaining about a noisy room. The receptionist offered them a suite as an alternative. They accepted. I then complained and was offered the ladies room who had just complained about the noise and been moved to the suite. I refused to take this room. They had no alternative rooms available. The dogs barked sporadically through the night. Annoying to say the least. I have a video of the noise and showed this to the assistant manager.
Being disturbed by the dog’s barking I went to the bathroom and noticed a big fat slug making its way up the wall. Obviously a hygiene problem and not acceptable.
Next morning I met with assistant manager who was very frosty until I showed her the video and pictures. She offered an 10% discount, refused finally got a refund of £130, but it was a struggle and after a few emails. The assistant manger was very apologetic in the emails.
We ate in the restaurant and the food was fine.
The staff are really great and helpful and deserve credit, but the management needs a retrain in customer service.
I would also recommend acoustic doors being installed to adjoining rooms.
We will not be returning.
- Shaunie_D (10/5): Excellent Hotel - We'e just returned from our second stay at the Wild Boar and I think it will now become a regular annual event. The hotel is relaxed, cosy and friendly. The bar area is lovely in winter with the open fires help give it the cosy welcoming feel. We opted for an Owls Next room and it was lovely. Large, well appointed and the roll top bath so deep we could hardly see over it! The staff are all really friendly and attentive and Jorge is a character. The food is great and the breakfast exceptional. Its a nice 3 mile walk over to Bowness across the fields and if you can I'd recommend doing it but it can be a bit soggy in places this time of year. We did the Clay Pigeon shooting again this year and that is great fun.
- ludomcgurk (4/5): A Mixed Experience. - My wife and I booked for two nights here, £432, in one of their best rooms. Upon check-in we were told vaguely where our room was, but it did take some finding, this is a very long hotel and our room was some distance from reception. No offer to show us to the room or hand with our bags. We're mid 70's and would have appreciated an offer.
We'd booked for dinner both nights. I ordered a rib-eye steak at £37, and my wife ordered a fillet steak at £45. Rich prices. When the waiter came to take our plates we expressed our disappointment with our steaks. The fillet was gristly and chewy, and the rib-eye was chewy also. They were just not good pieces of meat.
The next day I went to reception to cancel our dinner reservation for that night, and I also told the receptionist why, and that we would expect an adjustment to our bill as a result.
The next morning at checkout my bill showed no adjustment, and also included a charge for a fictitious bottle of wine.
The receptionist told me that they couldn't take any money off a bill and I'd have to e-mail to their head office to claim it.
I protested and asked to see a manager, who duly came. She didn't want to do anything because she said I hadn't complained at the time. I told her I very definitely had, once to the waiter, and the next day to the receptionist.
She then grudgingly offered to reduce the meal prices by 50% which I said was not good enough, and after a fair bit of haggling she said she'd take the meals off the bill, plus the fictitious bottle of wine, and the bill was re-issued, which I paid. However, I hadn't noticed that a service charge for £13.15 had appeared on the amended bill, what for I do not know.
Friends who had recommended this hotel to us 'phoned and ordered a bottle of wine for our room upon arrival and pair for it. They then found that service charge had been also been charged to them.
This is a very nice hotel in a lovely setting, but appeared to us to be badly managed, and my wife is very experienced in the field of hospitality. My complaint was badly managed, and we would not return to this place, nor would we recommend it.
By this time I had noticed another review for a rubbish fillet steak in this place, and also that it is now advertised at £109 per night plus free bits on Travelzoo; not a good sign, but perhaps indicative of poor repeat business???
- 455kerrys (10/5): What a gem - What a beautiful building in a picturesque setting .
We only had 1 night stay in Squirrels drey 25
The room was lovely and well equipped however it had a bit of an odour to it
The bed was one the comfiest I’ve ever slept In
The bar / restaurant is amazing. The meal we had was outstanding, the steaks were cooked to perfection
The cheese souflee with the fig chutney was mouth-wateringly good
Special thanks to Natalia ( sorry if it’s spelt wrong )
From Kerry and Giles ( Martin and Jane’s friends )
We will be back
- fionah498 (10/5): Fabulous stay at The Wild Boar - We enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Wild Boar Hotel to celebrate the recent Wedding in Australia of my son and daughter -in-law, with their UK family. This included a fun packed afternoon with Michael Coates company doing some clay shooting , archery and Axe throwing on the Estate, following a bacon rolls and hot drink welcome brunch .Special thanks to Peter and Isobel . We then had a fabulous evening meal with 22 guests , with delicious food and drinks , enjoyed and talked about by all at the celebration in such positive terms. The team should all be congratulated for making the celebration so memorable and delightful.
- 50beckyi (10/5): Amazing food, great location and rooms - Stayed 2 nights as a couple as wanted a nice get away and close to hiking trails. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the evening meal was stunning. Setting was lovely and the hotels grounds were beautiful. The staff we friendly and extremely attentive. We would like to thank Beth and the Canadian gentleman (sorry didn’t catch his name) especially for making us feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The room was comfortable, clean and very spacious. Just a few observations that would make it even more perfect. We had a bottle of Prosecco in our room on arrival but there is no fridge and wasn’t in an ice bucket. Therefore it was warm and not enjoyable. An addition of a fridge or ice bucket would have been perfect. Also in the bathroom, there is a holder for toothbrushes but no actual holder in there. Just a small addition that would help organise the bathroom. The bed was big and very comfy, an addition of a blanket would be a nice luxury as wanted to read on the bed but not get under the covers. A cosy blanket would be a great addition. We loved our stay and would recommend to anyone and especially the food! The breakfast was superb and excellent choice. Thank you for a lovely stay!
- Marion (9/5): -
- Pathendo (8/5): Night away - One night stay on a winter deal which was excellent value. The hotel was no where near 100%occupancy, the restaurant was very full for evening dinner with non residents. I think this speaks volumes about the food and service, both being excellent. We have visited this hotel several times, it’s not very often in hotels you see the same staff as you did on your first visit around 7 Yeats ago.
- cindygQ9958XA (10/5): Wonderful stay. - We really enjoyed our stay. The food and service is amazing . There is a wonderful cosy atmosphere with 3 roaring open fires.
- 25joanneg (10/5): One of the nicest places we've ever stayed - What a beautiful and well situated place!! A warm welcome met us and over the length of our stay it became apparent that all of the staff we encountered were very helpful and happy in their jobs. Everything you needed was present, down to wellies & umbrellas. Our room was the most basic but was warm, comfortable, and welcoming, and had everything we needed. We loved our stay and the food in the restaurant was fabulous!! Well done to everyone who made our stay a joy.
- Pauline (10/5): Outstanding - it was warm, friendly with roaring fires and outstanding food. - Two shining stars for our stay: staff and food!
Both absolutely outstanding
- michaelwL9099XU (10/5): A Perfect Stay - My girlfriend and I have just got back from our trip to the Wild Boar Estate and we are trying to think of anything that would've improved our stay... but we couldn't. This property has to be the best English hotel we've ever stayed in, the food is absolutely amazing and the service from every single member of staff was second to none. The room was comfortable, spacious and kept immaculate by the staff. We booked the spa as an add-on at Low Wood Bay and again, the service, staff and everything about the spa was amazing. We will definitely be back and strongly recommend this to anyone who wants a switch-off kind of break.

- Jordanpatto1 (10/5): Wild boar estate spa break - Beautiful historic property with exemplary staff and decor. Highly recommend to both solo traveler's and couples.
- zoejulianw (2/5): This place has really gone downhill - Visited on Jan 2nd for our favourite Lakeland afternoon tea. We have been here on many occasions but alas we will visit no more. The food was cold when served and the chicken/fish was very much overcooked making it virtually inedible. The hotdog has been incinerated and the outside of the scone was that hard I had to leave it. The cream was also on the turn and had to be given a wide birth. When we drew the servers attention to our issues she said “I will tell the kitchen”, what fantastic customer service???? We will not be back and would not recommend this place. I even emailed them to reach out over our concerns and yes you guessed it, no response!!!!
- Lisa (8/5): Enjoyable stay - Luvly cozy hotel Nothing
- Gillian (10/5): Fantastic weekend to start the new year with. - The breakfast was exceptional, and the location was close to the lakes so we went for a walk around after breakfast , we also took advantage of the archery that is offered which again was exceptional , we had a lot of fun. There was nothing to dislike.
- Sophie (8/5): Pleasant stay, enjoyed overall - Good size room, clean and staff were friendly Room a little cold at night and bar area seating a bit limited
Couldn’t get a seat for a drink
- Extraordinary789383 (10/5): New Years Eve Stay - Wonderful 2 night stay to celebrate the end of 2025 and welcome in 2026. From the moment you arrived, you felt special, nothing was too much trouble and plenty of staff on hand if you needed anything. Food was a plenty, all delicious and plenty of choice. The activities organised were great and inclusive for all ages/abilities. A whiskey lovers dream, you could not possibly sample everything on a 2 night break. Would highly recommend and would love to do it again
- davidmason2608 (10/5): Great trip - Really enjoyed this again for the 5th time. Old fashioned and characteristic with real ales and wood fires
- Antonina (10/5): Our purpose was to have a relaxing night away and this was achieved. - Nothing but relaxing vibes, friendly service and exceptional food. Me and my partner spent one night here and we hope to visit again. The breakfast was out of this world. Lovely comfortable room, with everything we needed. Stayed in the fox rooms. We enjoyed everything about the wild boar, no complaints at all. Don’t believe any bad reviews, if they ever get any. The place was buzzing with people and everyone seemed to be happy and having a great time.
- racheljX7747JQ (10/5): NYE package - Adam and his team were all friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the range of activities and meals. Highly recommend
- Diane (5/5): Not good … - Quaint Smelly in bar area
Room 36 bathroom not up to standard
Wedding party in bar area … no seating for residents
- Daniel (9/5): Great food, drink and atmosphere in this old building with lots of character, would stay again - Dinner and drinks were excellent. 3 wood fires on the go all day made a nice atmosphere and breakfast was particularly good. First room hadn’t been fully cleaned with a used toilet left from the previous guests. The staff were very helpful and sorted us another room late at night.
- johnnick2025 (10/5): Xmas short break - Well worth a visit very authentic property in an amazing setting with lovely walks. Quality staff and dining facilities.

- carolegT1288HK (10/5): Fantastic Boxing Day - We visited Wild Boar Estate again this Boxing Day and was fantastic! Food was delicious and great home brew beer. Staff was very friendly and helpful. We will be back next year!
- R0b60 (10/5): Fantastic Christmas stay - If you want a great Christmas break with superb food this is the place to go. The staff can't do enough for you.
- Diane (10/5): Beautiful hotel in quiet location - Everything from start to finish, staff, room, food. All excellent. We had our dog with us and even laid on treats for her in room. Will definitely be going back
- mariaD3985TH (10/5): Christmas Break - Our stay at the Wild Boar was extremely good , lovely accommodating friendly staff, the food absolutely delicious,
- 768adeles (2/5): No Service at the Inn - On Christmas Eve 2025, two lowly walker's had travelled on foot from Bowness, across field and Dale, to a public house they had spied on their journey into Bowness the previous day. They had noted how welcoming the inn looked and had decided that was the place to have lunch. They checked on the website and it was open. So off they trotted and got to the inn all the light's were on and when they entered the bar, the fire was roaring, patrons were making merry. I walked upto the bar and asked if we could have lunch and a pint, initially the young man appeared welcoming. Then the female manager stepped in and stated that they weren't open to non resident's today. I was obviously disappointed, but I explained we had walked quite away and could we have a pint before we left...she point blank refused and we had to leave. It would not have harmed them at all to allow us to have a quick drink before we walked back to Bowness...The pumps were on, the fire was going...talk about goodwill to all men...very disappointed.
- Chris_and_Emma1 (6/5): Food decent enough, expensive, service dreadful. - We were a party of 6 eating on Boxing Day. The restaurant wasn’t particularly busy, probably 2/3 full. The service was very, very slow indeed. We had 2 courses and were in over 2 hours. We had to ask where our desserts were as we thought we had been forgotten. The food was decent, small portions but decent enough. Given that 5 of the 6 had a single soft drink, almost £280 for 2 courses was expensive. You also get the bill (which we had to go and search out staff to get) but then pay at the bar so end up in a queue of people wanting to get drinks. We won’t be going back.
- lisa (3/5): Disappointing - Location Dog barking continuously in the room next to us completely ruined our stay. Told the staff the next day, they didn’t seem to be bothered
- anthonynO120RV (10/5): Ruby wedding stay - First of all, I must apologise for the late review , stayed 2 nights with my best man and his wife for our ruby wedding celebration. Stayed in owls nest, absolutely loved it. Nice touch with a card from the staff, food superb, staff wonderful, Really looked after us.will definitely be back. Thankyou all .

- gwoodward5599 (10/5): Perfect for a couples night away - We went to Wild Boar to stay overnight, packaged with using the low wood bay for a spa session and treatments.
The wild boar staff were all really lovely and welcoming. The food was very nice, with a great menu to choose from. Breakfast, included in our stay, was perfect. We got a welcome drink on arrival, which was really nice. We will certainly be back!
- diclairet2022 (10/5): Our favourite winter hotel - Excellent as always. We love sitting by the roaring log fire opposite the bar. Good service from all the staff. A very comfortable room and a good night's sleep. Only problem is the number of stairs. In spite of being able to have a room by the flat entry back door there are still three difficult flights of stairs to negotiate to reach the bar. lounge and restaurant - worth it if you can manage them though!!
- markbaker2025 (10/5): A memorable Xmas party - Our company had booked here for our Xmas party. From arrival to departure it was a really enjoyable experience. Book in was easy. Room was really comfortable well decorated and equipped. Food and drink was excellent throughout and I thought the staff were really friendly and hardworking.

- Christopher (10/5): Excellent venue for a short break, good food and excellent service - Breakfast was hearty
Staff were very well represented and efficient and personable Our room was really comfortable and clean, however the building is old and unfortunately we heard every footstep of the person above us.

- I6091RCstephenl (8/5): Soon be xmas - We went for the alternative afternoon tea experience .first impressions were good lovely log fires tastefully decorated for xmas .the platter of food was really interesting although could have been hotter the soup was delicious but in a tiny bowl .come on for the money at least put a proper soup bowl on the menu . dissapointed with the beer samples as they have an on site brewery it was tasteless and bland ..moving on to the rooms nothing special but spotless .they charge £30 for a dog which is ridiculous .evening meal was excellent I had a 10 ounce sirloin a d my wife had the beef and oyster pie .both were excellent .service was very good .really good nights sleep ready for the best breakfast .everything you could ask for they smoke their own fish and meat so I thought their might be some kippers on the menu .not to be what I had was superb though smoked brisket with poached duck eggs .which was first class .my wife had a full English which again was top notch .would I go again ?.yes maybe for the Sunday lunch . Overnight yes .for the beer 2 stars sorry I've had much better .but everything else spot on expensive yes but special occasion spend your money on yourself .before it's too late
