T7247KBhowards (4/5): Difficult stay, ultimately resolved - I’m updating my review of Barker's Island Inn & Conference Center to reflect both my stay and the eventual resolution. My experience during the stay had several challenges. My room was not ready at arrival, and my room keys had been issued to another guest without full ID verification, which was concerning. The room itself also needed attention, with noticeable dust, towels left piled on furniture, a broken table, a missing light bulb, and what appeared to be mold in the bathroom. There was no hot water in the sink, and the heat stopped working on the second night. Maintenance did respond, but it took multiple follow ups and some time before issues were addressed, and I ultimately chose to check out early. After the stay, communication with management took some persistence. An initial partial refund was provided, and after further discussion, an additional night was refunded. I do appreciate that the hotel followed through to reach a resolution. Overall, while I’m grateful the situation was eventually addressed, the stay itself highlighted opportunities for improvement in room readiness, maintenance response, and communication.
Meander02009949987 (10/5): 10/10 as always - We had an unexpected fire in our home that caused smoke damage that made us unable to stay home for multiple nights. Every staff member went above and beyond for us to make sure our stay was everything we could’ve wanted. HUGE shout out to Shirley at the front desk. She was SO compassionate, kind, and truly cared about my family and I. Woman deserves an award!!!! We love barkers!

mickimicki (10/5): First time and I’ll be back! - Did a staycation at Barker’s with friends and loved it. Super relaxing location, lots of parking, staff were above and beyond and so friendly. Nice pool area and jacuzzi. Loved they have a sauna. Rooms were good size and value for the price. Didn’t get a chance to eat at the restaurant or bar but loved that they have both on site. Will be back.

While it is dated, it is always a great deal and we like that there is a small exercise room, pool and hot tub and restaurant. It too is convenient to Duluth and was a far better price than anything comparable in Duluth. We will come again!
sarahoM2070AL (2/5): Disappointed - This hotel is dirty. I’ve stayed here in the past and it was a beautiful wonderful experience. That was around May of 2024. I stayed very recently. The rooms were filthy. Mold in the fridge and microwave. Didn’t look like it’s been cleaned at all between guests. I was there during a snow storm, and I could hear the GM BERATING an employee, and even head that employee later make the comment that she could smell liquor on his breath. This place has really gone down hill in the last year and a half. It’s a shame.
134axlew (2/5): The Pit - The check in was smooth. It seemed we had to walk a quarter mile to the room. Not sure why I was given a room so far from the entrance. The parking lot definitely was not full when I checked in. And it was almost 9:00 pm. After arriving at the room, I did a walked through. The room had a smell, it smelled like dirty clothes that had been worn for a week. There was toothpaste splatter observant the sink, faucet and mirror. Worse yet, the toilet had not been cleaned in a while. And, there was only five feet of toilet paper left on the roll and two feet of the roll was hanging to the floor. Honestly, the room looked like it had been lived in and they did a hurry up of cleaning. The bed smelled the worst. We called the desk, no answer!! We decided to sleep on the roll out couch but as we took off the cousins we saw what appeared to be mold under the cushions. We decided to sleep on the bed, with our clothes on. We wrapped the pillows in our jackets to hide the smell. The bed felt like a piece of plywood with a pad.

I tried calling the front desk after 90 minutes and no one answered. They switched my king room for 2 queens. Bathtub was not clean. Was told I would get a 50% discount but would have to contact hotels.com and they would contact the hotel for the discount. Still waiting to hear.

Water pressure in the shower was very good but the faucet control seemed to need work. Pool area was fine however the lights were exceptionally bright. Some of the jets in the hot tub did not work. There was a water dispenser in the exercise room but no water jug. There were no tissues in the tissue dispenser in the bathroom. We arrived in the dark and didn’t see any lit signage for the property. There were a couple of holes in the bathroom wall above the sink. I’m not sure what might have been missing there.

VICKIE (8/5): - This is an older hotel, the room was outdated, and they was a very strong chemical smell, we told the gentleman at the front deck and he helped us problem solve the issue. We could have moved to a different room, but that wasn't going to work for us. We ended up with a fan blowing out the window all night long. Bath tubs were very slippery , my husband who was handicapped almost fell. We ask for an accessible handicap room and were placed so far away from the front door it was a long walk for him. Room 132 and Room 130.

Svein Erik (2/5): - From the moment you step into lobby all you see is an outdated run down appearance. The lobby, restaurant and guest room all smelled musty. Guest room mattress is old and extremely worn out. Bathroom not much better. Microwave was dirty inside and room looked like no one bothered to dust it at all. The only positive is the kindness of the staff and the ample parking. I would not recommend this place. This property has the potential to be amazing. Until then, its not.

Gabrielle (8/5): Good views and vibes - It’s a great place to stay for the views and easy access to the water. It’s an older hotel but quaint it has a swimming pool and a hot tub to relax at the end of the day. It’s very close to University of Minnesota Duluth.

Katherine (4/5): - Our room and every room we went into(went for a family wedding) all smelled weird, dust was caked on the headboards. If you had a room by the pool, your room was musty smelling and humid. The beds were so uncomfortable we hated that we had to stay for 3 nights. Pros of this room: The water was hot in the shower, the bathroom was actually quite large For the wedding portion, the service was terrible, they did not bring out the cupcakes the bride had requested, only brought out 5 pizzas at a time, and the bar service was very slow. Given the price, I'd encourage you to stay at the Holiday Inn down the road, even if you're going for a wedding, it's not that far of a drive.

Chris (4/5): Not Great, Won't Be Back - Check-in was easy and fast. The keycards failed to unlock the room so I went back to the front desk to get new keys. The front desk person decided it would be easier to move us to a different room. The new room had a serious mildew odor, so we opened the window and went for a long walk to let it air out. Eventually the mildew smell mostly dissipated. The entire place is outdated, the beds are not very comfy, there was a bunch of smashed up goldfish crackers under one of the beds, the body wash dispenser in the shower was empty, and the hot/cold valve on the shower was installed backwards so if you put it on "cold" -- hot water would come out. The pool is good sized but doesn't have stairs, the pool area is spacious but the token machine for the video games wasn't working. The island is pretty neat, but the Inn is not.

The menus in the rooms are not what is served in the restaurant. Took forever to get just our drinks in restaurant. The food was delicious we ordered for dinner. Ordered breakfast on app wouldn't give us our breakfast I had to explain to them there is 2 options with door dash which a dasher picks up and by door dash which we pick up ourselves. Had to ask for towels multiple times. The staff at the front desk were all very friendly. The property needs to upkeep. We enjoyed our stay over all besides the few small things.

Reception staff were great - restaurant staff less so. Very young and inexperienced. Didn't have a wine list OR know what wines they had, for example. So it was fine, but nothing special.

Melissa (6/5): - The staff was very nice. But, the accommodations left much to be desired. We had a late checkin and when we arrived, we found the door to our room propped open. The front desk was kind enough to give us a different room. The room was cold, so we turned on the heat and it caused the whole room to smell like burnt hair, we turned it off. The toilet lid was missing a chunk and there were several unfilled holes and gaps in the bathroom. Nothing that couldn’t be dealt with, but I do not recommend overall.

Michelle (6/5): - The resort rooms and hallways are old and dirty. The rooms we were given had significant visible mold in the bathrooms. I went to the front desk and asked if they had other rooms available for me to look at. I went and checked 5 other rooms, all of which were dirty and smelled, and most had visible mold in the bathrooms. Ultimately we chose to stay there as we had 8 people and needed two rooms, and a quick search for last minute lodging in the area was significantly more than what we could pay. The hotel staff was pleasant enough and I overheard other customers telling them how wonderful their stay was. Everyone has different ideas of what kind of lodging they are comfortable staying in. I guess if you are wanting a place that is going to be clean, free of yucky smells and has no mold, this likely isn't the best place to stay.

rose (6/5): - The room wasn't clean. One corner had a large spider web with dead flies. Dirty towels left from the pool in the bathroom. Ice bucket was full of water that had a film on it. Refridgerator was full of water. Had to keep putting on the bottom sheet as it wouldn't fit. Maid needs to pay a little more attention on the cleaning. I may stay again but would have to check room first.

Emma (4/5): - The property is in a quiet and safe area. The issue was the lack of at least adequate housekeeping. Upon arrival, we were given a room with unclean bed sheets and old food in the refrigerator. We were then moved to another room. However, during our 5 day stay, housekeeping kept missing doing anything . Had to ask for tissue paper and only received 1 roll at a time. The garbage was never picked up even when discussing the issue with the front desk.
Rachel (6/5): Not for a weekend getaway but a place to sleep - This hotel was very promising with the pictures they had posted and even with the front lobby. It took a turn when we walked to the door at the other end of the hotel. It was kind of like we were entering a different place with major motel vibes. The door was covered in webs and bugs. The entrance/ stairwell hallway was dirty around the floor and walls. As we entered the hotel there was a distinct smell, mostly of old carpet. The room was ok but was dirty on the floor, just looked like missed vacuuming. The bathroom definitely needs some updates with the discolored mirror and broken counter top. Otherwise it was clean! The beds were made up and the pillows were comfy. Overall not what we were looking for a weekend getaway but I’d stay there if it was just a place to sleep while passing through.

Unfortunately, once we got inside this feeling changed. The room was extremely outdated, was not clean and smelled musty. From the water drainage to the wetland catch basins, nature walking paths, beaches, etc. fun and adventurous place to stay.

Katie (4/5): No thanks - The location of the in is nice. It has a walking path near it. With the price of the hotel, breakfast should not cost between 12-18$, so we just found somewhere else to eat. Staff was not very inviting. There is a dire need for upgrades. Outlets are hard to get to, the bathroom hard mildew on the grout especially where the wall and tub meet. There were no tissues and only 1/3 a roll of to with no more in the room. Fridge wouldn’t cool unless you propped the freezer open. There was debris on the carpet. TV had a dark spot. Chipped/old furniture. Slow drain. The door frames were rusted and dented. We had a view of the water but the windows were filthy.

Could have used someplace convenient to stash our duffle bags. The bar and restaurant had an outdoor patio that was nice but the bartender seemed a little inexperienced. We had to tell her how to make our drinks, but still friendly and helpful. And the lighting in the stairway we had to use (at one end of the building) was pretty poor.

V4235DRgregoryb (4/5): This hotel needs a substantial remodel! - Upon checking in, the desk person curtly asked for my ID, had me sign the paper he printed, and handed me the card key. He was not friendly, and he gave me no instructions as to where to park or where my room was in the hotel. He did not tell me about the wireless. I got into my room and noticed that this property needs a substantial upgrade, to say the least. The false ceiling in the bathroom was rusted. There were a number of holes in the bathroom wallpaper, and the grout was dirty. The bathrooms most definitely need to be gutted. I think this owner/company is only focusing on weddings and events and does not care about the hotel or the rooms. The soap, conditioner, and shampoo dispensers in the shower were completely empty. The next day I gave a tip to housekeeping and specifically asked them to fill the three empty dispensers, which they did. But really? Empty upon arrival? The furniture in my room was also beat up. Don’t stay here. Stay in Duluth instead. Pay a bit more. I hope a new owner acquires this property and invests some money in upgrading the entire place! It was once very nice.

Todd (6/5): - It was just an average room and hotel. It was convenient for us for doing a fishing charter. The biggest issue was kids/parents. There was a young kid hockey tournament that weekend. The parents just let their kids run up and down the halls screaming and yelling until late into the night. No accountability or courtesy whatsoever. They were even playing hockey in the hall. That’s the parents fault for letting them do this until past 10pm when some people needed to be up at 4 am. And the hotel staff for not putting an end to it. Not sure I’d stay there again.
Cassandra (6/5): Great views, but definitely outdated - Great view outside. Great pool room. The bedroom was pretty outdated and hallways smelt like pot

Tim (4/5): - An excellent location, however the place is run down and definite need of repairs and updating. The back of the building was filthy, cigarette butts were laying by the door, weeds were growing next to the building and the pool area needed cleaning. It would be a very nice place with a lot of tlc. Don’t think I’m coming back.
