Guest Reviews
- wildfloweroftheWest (10/5): A Room with a Hug - Staying at the Black Bear Inn is like visiting your favorite aunt's house. Your room is cozy, it's by the river, Liz leaves cookies and chocolates for a before bed snack, she welcomes pets in her pet friendly rooms, and you'll feel hugged just because you stayed there. It's clean and nostalgic with rockers by the front door. You can walk to nearby eateries and relish small town life. It is our go to lodging in Dubois.
- 501gaylener (10/5): Highly recommend - Very comfy and homey. Room smelled clean and fresh. Liz is exceptional. S’mores every evening at the campfire by the river was fun. Just sitting and relaxing watching the river flow was so nice in the evenings.
- 19821991 (10/5): Wonderful and kind manager! - Liz is absolutely wonderful and so kind and accommodating! Our plans to stay at Black Bear Inn I feel, would have been a great experience but unfortunately, never worked out. Liz got us two rooms and tried to move people around so I could stay in a non pet room because of allergies. She is super kind and I felt bad it didn't work to stay but I hope when I'm in the area, it works to stay at Black Bear. Hope you will give it a try and call Liz as she will go out of her way to help you.
- nancyd413 (10/5): A new favorite - Cute motel. Liz is the best. Large selection of movies to watch. Beautiful view of the river. Don’t forget to have a s’more before bed. Hope to be back sometime.
- MNLoriR59 (10/5): Beary good stay! - Very nice room, super comfortable beds, great shower except no place to put your shampoo & conditioner. Full size coffee pot. Small fridge with freezer. And let’s not forget the bears ! We did not count them but there is a lot of them. S’mores in the evening down by the river. Owner is friendly and outgoing. Very enjoyable stay.
- N8083XUnancyl (10/5): MUST GO!!! - Probably the most underrated inn I’ve been to. Great rooms that’s clean and comfortable, very cozy and the people are very friendly and welcoming. Kids love this place and so does the adults. Very fair prices as well, best inn I’ve personally been to.
- phill1267 (8/5): Exceeding expectations. An older property managed well. - The older motel comes alive with friendly bear motif. Remodeled rooms are excellent and ownership truly cares about guest hospitality. The firepit each night is a great example, but the effort to help guests enjoy DuBois is over the top. It’s an old property, but competes well with newer options and worthy of a base location to enjoy the region.
- MatthewL145 (10/5): Great Stop - Room very clean. Hostess very friendly and sincere. Lobby is very well kitted with Bear Spray, water filter systems, postcards, cups and more. The evening social S'mores at the fire ring, next to Wind River was awesome! After long drive from Steamboat with stops in Lander and Dubois Forest Service offices, this was a pleasant stay before a backpack into the RW Mountains.
- loria496 (10/5): A soul soothing stop on the highspeed highway of modern life - A true treasure for the traveler who is ready to step out of the fast lane and unplug from daily grind! The Black Bear Inn is an absolute delight. From the owner who makes you feel like family the moment you arrive to the nightly fires where other like minded guests and sojourners gather to make s'mores and swap tales of adventure to the cozy (and extremely clean) rooms, a stay here is both soothing to the soul and a reminder that life is good when we spend it focused on the right things. This will definitely be a repeat destination for us. The only thing I didn't like was leaving!
- R8953HOshannonb (10/5): Homey motel - First rate motel. There are smores and popcorn in the evening by the fire and the river. The rooms are clean and uniquely furnished. There are a plethora of little things (packs bear graham crackers on the pillows as an example) offered to create a pleasant and relaxing stay.
There is no air conditioning but with the fans set up in the rooms there was no problem.
- jonathanl37 (10/5): Comfort for the soul and body - When I first pulled up I didn't know what to expect. What we got was more then a room for a couple nights. Our stay changed our lives forever. Liz the owner greeted us with her usual joy filled smile. She gave us a run down on The Black Bear Inn. We went to our rooms which had so many unique and homey things through out. We had a refrigerator, coffee maker, treats and even a custom sign with our name greeting us welcome. All the amenities you would like to have such as shampoo, conditioner and even a bar of glycerin "Bear" soap.
There is a relaxing and tranquil place down along the river to sit and think, dream or just decompress. Every night Liz puts out all the makings for s'mores with professional marshmallow roasting sticks. She get a fire going so anyone who want can s'more up. Every night we meet people along the river while we made s'mores and shared our travel experiences.
What made this stay remarkable has less to do with the great rooms, wonderful personalized customer service or even the fact we were nestled along the Wind River. What stands out is how well Liz cared for our family. My family pulled together money so we could take my dying brother (Lung cancer) on his bucket list trip. All he wanted to do was catch trout in the Wind River Range. We knew that this trip had some risk involved. Her Son Micah also happens to be a world class fishing guide. Liz and Micah are cut from the the same clothe. There are both amazing, compassionate and joy filled. Micah who runs the Wind River Fly Fitter is the other half of who help our brother's dream come to life.
The first night we got there our brother went into a respiratory distress with an SP02 of 83%. He was in a bad way. Liz not only prayed for him but found an oxygen concentrator. Our first night was rough but he made it through and he spend the next 2 day catching more fish than he could eat. Throughout our stay Liz was just amazing. We wanted for nothing. I am convinced she is an angel from God Himself. I don't know when the last time I meet someone so kind, so generous and so full of joy. I would say stay at the Black Bear for the comfort but return for the friendship and love you'll find there.
As an ICU trauma nurse I know without a doubt our trip would have ended if it weren't for Liz. Her joy and the light of the spirit that she pours out to everyone is beyond my simple words. She has forever change our family and our stay will live in our heart until the end of time.
- timjC4843KM (10/5): Black Bear Inn. Recommended by locals too! - Liz was a great host! Any information needed, she had it. Friendly, clean and comfortable. Not to mention the towels and washcloths are so soft. Was it the towel type or the detergent that was used? So soft! Thanks for a great stay. Appreciate the hospitality.
- I7147SRlarryg (10/5): Memorable lodging by the river - Wonderful people running Black Bear Inn. They do all the extra details for the room to include a campfire down by the river where you make s’mores over a campfire … great opportunity to meet people from all over the US. No disappointments here!
- S5555YDchrisl (8/5): Cozy, Welcoming - Comfy, clean rooms carry the bear theme throughout. Liz is a gem who works hard to please. Especially appreciated the $10/dog pet policy and lit fire pit at river’s edge with s’mores available!
No TV but great movies available for DVD player in rooms.
- Vacation48823657273 (10/5): A Wyoming Gem! - What a gem the Black Bear Inn is! The rooms are very cute and clean, the location is excellent and the price is great. The setting is perfect for a getaway. You’ll love this place! The owners are fantastic and go out of their way to accommodate you and make you feel welcome. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay! My husband and I are looking forward to staying with you next year!
- V4423EHcarolm (10/5): Unexpectedly wonderful visit - I visited Dubois WY to attend my granddaughter's final rodeo at rodeo camp which happened to fit in perfectly with my homeward journey from friends in Powell WY. Dubois is a dear little town and I was lucky to find a room at the Black Bear Inn ahead of time. I booked online and was able to choose my room, which was every bit as comfortable and cozy as it looked. I loved everything about the inn and decided to stay an extra day as soon as I arrived!
The inn has character and history. The flower beds and containers welcome you and I parked the electric car right outside my room by my own table and chairs in the sunshine. A bonus, which I hadn't noticed on the website, was the only EV charger in Dubois! My room was comfortable, spacious and well equipped, and so quiet - I slept like a baby! However the very best thing was the area by a large creek at the back of the inn with seating and a hammock, perfect to relax in the shade with the sound of rippling water to further soothe you. At night wood is lit in the fire pit, fairy lights are switched on, and for those who enjoy s'mores (not me!) you can make your own! Other guests were interesting and friendly - and I haven't even mentioned Liz!
The owner of Black Bear Inn is Liz Cowen Furman, friendly, helpful, a talented woman of many skills, and an absolute delight! Her cookery book, which she illustrated beautifully, was in each room for visitors to enjoy. Liz invited me and a couple of other guests to join her at the annual Buffalo BBQ, a fund raiser for the local volunteer fire fighters, and attended by over 1000 locals. Bison brisket is cooked underground for 3 days and was delicious. What a fun evening.
I would have liked to stay longer but had to get on my way. Liz and Black Bear Inn will remain with me as treasured memories of one of the most fun hostelries I have ever enjoyed!
- c0l0mingle (10/5): Great Beds, Quiet, Quaint, and Nostalgic - This motel is quaint, cozy, and owned by one of the friendliest people I have ever met. It is a throw-back to the family motels of my childhood road trips. Each room is filled with personal touches such as handmade bear-shaped glycerin soap. The room was clean, the bed was very comfortable, and it was quiet. This is NOT your typical chain hotel and that's what makes it wonderful - there is no cable TV, the bathroom is a mixture of dated and new, and there is no air conditioning. However, it makes up for all that with charm, nightly s'mores by the river, and gorgeous flowers surrounding a communal outdoor patio.
The drive to The Tetons is about one hour and gorgeous and gives you views you can't get in the valley. It is hard to come by an early morning breakfast, so I recommend bringing some breakfast burritos with you. Hangry's Food Truck was only open the last day, but had the best breakfast.
- justinbG119NH (10/5): Cozy Motel with Lots of Character - Cozy motel with lots of character and a nice gift shop. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend this motel no matter who you are traveling with as they have lots of variety of room types available.
- BJG357 (10/5): Great place to stay! - We stayed 3 nights at the Black Bear Inn. We had room 21, it was decorated so nicely with bears, books,a gorgeous quilt on the bed. Liz couldn't have been nicer. I ended up with altitude sickness and she brought me chicken soup and crackers on a tray! We would definitely stay there again if we returned!
- GretaH1122 (10/5): Amazing - The s’mores that you can toast each evening are so delicious and you could even use girl scout cookies instead of a graham cracker. My family agreed that on out trip these beds were the most comfortable of all the beds we slept in. The owner was very kind and there were teddy grahams on each bed (packaged of course). Overall the place was great! Thank you for letting us stay!
- MarciaR121 (10/5): Nice, clean, quaint motel. - The Black Bear Inn is a clean and quiet place to stay. Liz, the owner, is super helpful and accommodating. Guests are invited to gather near their riverside fire pit to chat and enjoy complimentary s'mores. A very friendly place... Not just a room. Would highly recommend!
- NikChandler (10/5): The actual best - We stayed here in June. The entire trip was wonderful. It’s quaint and comfortable but gives you “olden days” feel. The s’mores by the rushing River was awesome and my kids loved it! I liked picking up a movie in the office that was fun to do together. It’s nice to have an option outside of the more expensive town down the road.
- bbb456 (10/5): Fall Roadtrip - We got an early start and drove East from Idaho, beautiful fall leaves in the mountains. We got to the National Museum of Military Vehicles, about 10 mi East of Dubois just as it opened and spent all day there. It was highly worth the time and entrance fee. We learned so much we didn’t know. Would suggest bringing a sack lunch to eat in your car. They’ll stamp your hand & you can come back in & continue looking around.
Supper at Cowboy Cafe was excellent.
We checked in to the quaint Black Bear Inn, friendly owner, everything was clean & comfy & quiet. The next morning we took Union Pass Road South off of hwy 26 to almost Pinedale. Beautiful dirt backroad. Would do this all again.
- carylanddon (8/5): Hot and smoky - The Bear was a lovely little motel with great character and charm. Our hostess was very accommodating and friendly. The unfortunate news was that the smoke from the western fires was pervasive and was joined by high temperatures and the room did not have air conditioning. The motel was constructed with block walls and held in the heat and the small fan was inadequate for cooling; hence we did not sleep well. Other than that, the Bear is truly a flash from the past and worthwhile.
- Maghasswag (10/5): Stay here to see Yellowstone & Grand Tetons, not West Yellowstone tourist traps! - This place is so very sweet. Liz and her family care deeply about this spot and it is evident they care about their guests. From the free nightly s’mores to the detailed town info binder, the Black Bear Inn will help you feel right at home in the cute cowboy town of Dubois, WY. The rooms are maybe a lil dated, but they are spotless, thoughtfully decorated, and unique! This is a refreshing take on my previous experiences in “motels,” truly felt like a welcoming community space with charming touches. The river spot next to the fire pit was a highlight too! Electric car charging on site!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Liz is an amazing hostess. The property is located beside the wind river and has a beautiful park like setting where s’more‘s are served up nightly.
- Colleen (8/5): Rustic, friendly Inn. - Room was clean, but small. barely get around king sized bed. I would have preferred a queen with a little more room. Nice friendly , rustic atmosphere. Common area on riverfront with firepit. My husband missed air conditioning, but I thought it was comfortable without.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Pang (8/5): Super friendly owner and cozy motel - It is a motel so we got to park right in front of our room. The room was nice and comfy. Wifi was poor but this was expected in the mountains. Nice touches such as the towels and toilet paper folded, graham crackers with teddy bears and chocolates sprinkled around, and a bear shaped bar of soap. Loved the s'mores, swings and the river. Owner was welcoming and chatty.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Even though it is old, I liked the character of Black Bear Inn. Sometimes I like to steer away from the typical hotel, and stay at locally owned places. It felt homey and cozy to me, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff was friendly and the rooms were clean and quiet. It was probably the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Family run. Very Friendly.
- Linda (8/5): Great staff old building - The service was wonderful! However, this is an old building without air conditioning. The staff could not have been friendlier. Tgey were fantastic.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - rustic situation
- Tiffani (10/5): Unplug, unwind, and find your happy place - This place is magical! From one-of-a-kind ambiance, to nightly smores round the campfire, its truly a unique experience. Each room has a theme and stories to back them up, to which the owner loves to share (one of the nicest gals ever). Its truly a family affair here!
Layout is like a motel with free parking right outside your door. No cable but plenty of old school vhs rentals available in the office (for FREE, plus popcorn to make in your room too) and excellent wi-fi for your personal devices. Nothing too fancy here... just old fashioned rustic charm that will remind you of days gone by and fill your heart with joy. So unplug, unwind, dip your feet in the stream, and enjoy!! Oh, and look out for the occasional traveling musicians cause they just may break out their guitar and share a few songs for ya come sundown ;-)
- MICHAEL (10/5): Great stay - Do not let the looks deceive you. It is an older hotel but the charm alone is worrh the stay. My wife and I live in Las Vegas and are accustomed to fancy hotels, but we loved the rustic nature of this motel. The room was exceptionally clean and homie and Liz the owner was very welcoming and made sure our stay was enjoyable.if your anywhere near Dubois Wy and want a comfortable, charming motel don't pass up the black bear in.
- Louis (8/5): Home away from home - Friendly, welcoming owner as we arrived later in the evening. Room was smaller, but comfortable. Didn’t have as many electric outlets as newer motels, but we managed. No breakfast provided (e knew that when we booked), but nice table and chairs to eat our breakfast we brought. Everything was clean and seemed like staying at your mom’s home! Stayed here once a number of years ago and would stay again. Easy trip once we left Yellowstone.
- Edward (10/5): GREAT STAY at BLACK BEAR INN - The Black Bear Inn is a charming multi-generational family run motel right on the Wind River. We loved it and it is run by great people. The flyshop is a great bonus! Highly recommend both.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Felt like staying at Grandmas. Both good & bad. - It was fine. Felt very clean but dated.
- KELLY (10/5): Great night in western Wyoming - We were there just one night on our way to Idaho. It was a perfect place to spend the evening. My husband and son went on a flyfishing trip with a guide that does free flyfishing lessons daily in the parking lot at 5:00pm. My daughter and I were able to walk the downtown and had a wonderful meal at the Cowboy Cafe. The Black Bear Inn offered a campfire with s'mores and games at 8:00pm. The office had a lot of items, from movies and games, to books, to give you something to do in your downtown. We would stay there again.
- Douglas (10/5): Great place - This is a hotel that is very cared for by the owner. The room was homey, not a hotel room. The owner was friendly and professional. Plus they had a fire and smores everynight of our stay. 10/10 will stay again.
- Lee Ann (10/5): - Loved it. The young lady checking us in was fantastic.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice and quiet. Great staff with a good breakfast.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - i am but the property old and run down the only positive was the wifi
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good location, pricey for the old motel. Unique and quirky. No TV, internet or breakfast.
- Donna (10/5): Best kept secret - beyond friendly staff - Liz was informative and kind. Great location, right on the river. After 2 different local kennels fell through with doggie day care on the day we were going to Yellowstone, Liz offered a family member to walk our 2 dogs. So lucky to find this property. No air conditioning but the area's climate did not require air. We truly enjoyed our stay away from the big corporate properties.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We only stayed on night at Black Bear Inn, but we were really loved it. The owner was there to greet us, even though we had arrived late, and she was one of the most pleasant people I've ever met. She was friendly, helpful, and made our stay very enjoyable.
The room was clean, and the bed was very comfortable. Checking out was easy, and quick.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great property with unique features. Excellent, friendly and responsive staff. Easy check in/out and fun time with the nightly offering of smores at the firepit down at the river. Large room with spacious beds and lots of great amenities including coffee maker, microwave and mini fridge. Liz brought in a space heater to ensure we were comfortable since it was still a bit chilly and the heating system was being updated. We were cozy, comfy and had a great night's rest.
- Yvonne (8/5): Nice and friendly - Great place to stay! Friendly owner!
- James (8/5): Go stay at the Bear. - Clean motel; friendly & helpful management. Able to sit by the Wind River & enjoy a peaceful setting.
- knarfus (8/5): - Good location. Somewhat older property, but that's to be expected.
- Barry (8/5): - Hotel was very clean but outside needs some attwntion. Rooms very clean and neat. Owner was great!
- Maureen (10/5): - So Cute!!!
- Brian (10/5): Great place to stay and feel "at home" - Amazing place! Excellent service! Nice home feeling. Safe and pet friendly
- Bill (8/5): - The s’more the merrier. We had a wonderful stay with the terrific staff and had a good time sitting around the campfire making Smore’s and visiting with the other guests. Terrific experience.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Accommodated late checkin - Arrives very late but Liz made sure we were all set.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Unique & charming - Very cute & quaint. Great hostess. Creatively decorated. Comfy bed. No cable but excellent wifi. S'mores at riverside every night by campfire. You can even learn to fly-fish. Highly recommend.
- MERRILYNN JAnice (10/5): Quaint and cute - Wonderful, cozy, cute. Many personal touches. Only negative, no TV or cable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Happy Place - The owner has thought of everything possible to make it an enjoyable and comfortable stay. Loved the bear decor, this is a happy place that embraces it's individuality instead of cookie cutter formulas of the chain hotels.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Cute, comfortable rooms, photos are accurate. Lots of thought put into every detail. The owners are kind and take the time to say hello and chat if you want to.
- mary and bud (10/5): Rustic Inn on the river - Our stay was fabulous and staff was fun and helpful would stay a week if we could.
- David (10/5): - Owners were great and very accommodating. Room was very comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Smores at night - A very nice little hotel on the doorsteps on Yellowstone. Management very nice, family owned and run. Rooms nicely furnished with cute little additions like cookies and candy. Strange bathroom layout and electrical outlets a bit challenging.
No television, which was no big deal. Free videos in office, as in hundreds of them.
Each evening smores are prepared (well, you have to cook your own, but the fixings are free) down near the river's edge.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A one of a kind relic - This is a delightful hotel which is well maintained and has excellent service. You'll find the care-takers are very approachable and overall readily there for you.
This is a nice stay for anyone looking to do activities in the area. We went to Yellowstone and this hotel worked perfected.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Worst stay ever!!! - This hotel is so outdated!!! No cable service, no AC and there was lots of bugs! We were glad that we only booked one night because it would have been horrible if we had to spend another night in this hotel,
- Steve (10/5): Nice stop on way to Yellowstone - Great hostess, s'mores on the river beach YUM! Room was very nicely set up.
- Monica (10/5): - Great place to stay! Wish we could have been there longer. I mean... who doesn't like FREE S'mores EVERY NIGHT!!!
- Juan Carlos (10/5): Good and different get away. - The host was very friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (4/5): You get what you pay for - No air conditioning, no phone, no TV, very little hot water
- David (10/5): A Bed and Breakfast without the morning food. - Liz and the crew were great. Yes, the motel is a little older and not as sophisticated, but it made up for it in charm. It was a relaxed family atmosphere, and I enjoyed the lack of TV and high-speed internet. It made everyone put down the devices and enjoy the beautiful Dubois areas and all of the natural wonder that surrounds it. I am having withdraw right now and I feel crowded back at home, and I am awaiting my next visit back to the Dubois area. The smores and the pool table helped to make use of some downtime, and the free fly casting lessons with Wind River Flyfitter were the best bonus. Dubois is not a commercial place, so don’t go there expecting what you can find everywhere else. Look for the small and unique things that make the trip incredible. Thank you Black Bear Inn.
- Rebecca (10/5): Lovely place! - Wonderful time at the Black Bear Inn. Would definitely stay here again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Vacation to grand tetan and yellow stone - Excellent hotel to spend couple of days ! Staff were excellent! Helped with all my unusval needs. Kids enjoyed dinner at riverside picknick table and smors afterwards. Staff gave me great tips for my visit which helped a lot.
- Lorrie (2/5): Don't stay here! - Definitely not worth the price, pictures of the rooms aren't what you get! It shows flat screen TV, we got a 19" tube. Free movie rentals are DVDs and vhs, there are no TV channels not even local news. No ac, the door wouldn't close only locked w a chair against it to hold it, could still see light all the way around it. Don't smoke even in the parking lot or they will charge you $327.00 my daughter is asthmatic but claims smoked in the bathroom.
- kendall (10/5): Great stay - Would definitely stay here again. Wonderful staff, friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Room was super cute and clean. The room had lots of character with touches like bear shaped soap and a fish and teddy bear on the bed.
- Janice (10/5): Right off Wind River for water fun - Loved campfire Smores with staff and other people lodging there. Wonderful staff beautiful area to stay and go out to see sites.
