The hotel is quite far from downtown, with little within walking distance. The swimming pool is nice, but I couldn't find the gym during my week-long stay. The internet in the rooms is poor, and the cleanliness is just acceptable.

That was very disappointing. The guests had to pay for their breakfast. This is very wrong as it should have been stated clearly during the booking but it was not. I felt so bad.

themariaw (10/5): Everything you need - would stay here again! - I stayed at the Hotel Villa Portofino for one evening while traveling for work. After a very long trip and arriving in Kigali extremely jet-lagged, a hot shower and dinner delivered by room service was just what I needed. Breakfast the next morning was excellent and included an omelet bar, fresh fruits, and fresh fruit juices. Though I had to check out and was not coming back for a second night's stay, I was able to keep my bags in storage until I was able to come back for them. Overall, a very positive experience and would definitely stay here again.

ttano (6/5): Over priced and slow service - The hotel is located in a good area. shopping center and Indian restaurant not far from the hotel, but there is few things the hotel should look after: Hotel management should give more attention about the rooms conditions and service. The room curtains is not covering the windows correctly it need maintenance rooms carpet smell which is very bothering Bathroom lighting. System is very limited in case you need to chef there is a small portable mirror inside the bathroom so you can used to do your shaving at the balcony or the room, Service in restaurant is very very slow. I notice one customer waiting for almost 1 hour to get his club sandwich waitress, very polite but at the end the service is extremely slow I repeat, very, very, very slow. receptions staff need to be more friendly and cooperative Nice swimming pool and beautiful view from rooms and restaurant I believe the hotel rate is overpriced

Food in the restaurant is fab and lovely chilled drinks by the poolside were indulgent and made me happy. Just across from the hotel is a great salon where I got my nails done - Ali was great! Again, everyone’s service was top notch - from taxis to booking restaurants to getting advice on cheap sunglasses. I loved my stay here and would definitely stay again. Thank you to the whole team - you were fabulous.
BhattiSherry (6/5): Decent hotel next to golf course - A nice hotel although slightly dated. The reception lobby is quite bare but adequate. Rooms are nice and comfortable with all basic amenities in place. Limited tea bags and coffee on payment in the rooms was a bit of a let down. The restaurant is decent enough but with limited variety. Quite adequate hotel for its mid range price. Location next to the golf course is an added advantage.
1MikeBrooke1 (2/5): Wedding plans ruined - This is an unusual review – not about service in the hotel – but rather about the attitude of the Villa Portofino in failing to provide a contracted service. This review concerns a wedding reception which was booked around 9 October for the reception to be held in a specific room inside the hotel on 30 October. A deposit of RWF 500,000 (about $500) was paid, and the booking confirmed. On Wednesday 28 October at 9pm we received a call from the Villa Portofino cancelling our booking “due to a double-booking” for the room the reception was due to be held in. Readers can imagine the stress and hurt caused by this call. To cancel a reception one business day before the wedding is unheard of and is totally thoughtless. The day before a wedding, brides have last minute preparations to complete. Finding a new venue for the reception is not normally part of these preparations, especially when they are not at fault. We appealed to the Villa Portofino and asked them to rescind the cancellation – to no avail. The best offer was to hold the reception around the pool and then move to the reception room when it was available. Those familiar with Rwanda’s rainy season will realise that anything booked outside is liable to severe disruption from thunderstorms – especially in the afternoon. If we wanted an external event, we would have booked that in the first instance. So, at 1.30pm on the day before the wedding, after wasting three hours meeting with various Villa Portofino staff, we had a cheque with the deposit returned plus meagre compensation of RWF 200,000 (about $200), but nowhere to hold the wedding reception. The attitude of Villa Portofino staff was unbending in the extreme; there was absolutely no way we were ever going to be given the room we had booked, despite their admission that they were at fault. Their stance throughout the discussions was morally wrong. I have no idea why the other booking was allowed to take precedence, but this should be a warning to anyone thinking of using the Villa Portofino services. Will they deliver in the end, or will you also be left as we were, scrabbling around at the last minute to make good their failings?

ems401 (4/5): Dirty and badly managed - I stayed in this hotel for one night for the required quarantine and as I checked into the room, I was afraid of removing my shoes due to the state of the carpet, then realised that the carpet was full of nails from previous guests (not small cuts but massive and visible). When I notified reception, a cleaner was sent with a dustpan and a bloom which I politely sent him back and requested a vacuum cleaner. He came back with a big old broken vacuum cleaner that didn't clean to say that is all they have. As the vacuum cleaner fumed out so much dust, I tied to open curtains to let the dust out and was shocked by the state of curtains and window covered with even thicker layers of dust. Tried to sit outside and there was bird poo everywhere due to bird nest above me. Balcony chairs were very dirty with no table. I was too tired to change another room with probably similar state so I wiped the chair and sat outside until I had to come in for dinner (dry and over cooked chicken with rice and no sauce but a compliment of one chip and I mean 1*french flies). I am not even going to mention the unmatching tea cup and saucer or TV position. For breakfast I ordered just fruits as I could not imagine cooked breakfast being better than dinner and received 6 pieces of baby size cut fruits. I will never recommend anyone to stay there under current management, however with the right team it will be a great hotel due to perfect location and amazing views of the entire Kigali.

Calvin (8/5): Nice hotel with a great view - Our stay was very comfortable. We had an issue when booking in as I booked and paid online and paid in a currency other than USD, but it was soon sorted out. The room was very comfortable and clean and had a great view from our balcony. Breakfast was very nice and well presented. Staff were friendly and service was good
olivetreecanada (6/5): Looks good from a distance - The Hotel Villa Portofino perches on a hillside (like most of Kigali), offering views of the downtown skyline from the restaurant, café, and pool deck terraces. The café serves decent cappuccino and plays a mixture of Spanish telenovelas and English football on two different flat screens. The rooms were comfortable. My air conditioner did not work but it was not needed as window screens provided cool evening air without bringing in mosquitos. My shower had a very nice shower that felt like standing under a waterfall. The room safe didn’t work and the toilet leaked, both of which I told the staff. My laundry was done affordably within one business day. WiFi was hit and miss. Capable of streaming Youtube videos during off peak hours but during the middle of the day the abundance of users made it difficult to hold a Skype call. The exercise room was small, lacking fresh air, with old equipment not in good condition. Neither towels nor water were available. One evening I was in the hotel restaurant with a group who ordered at staggered times. Each of us waited an hour and a half between ordering and receiving our food, which seemed unusually long. Fans of Céline Dion will not be disappointed by the constant stream of her hits from the 90s piped into hallways, restaurant, and lobby. If you share the same abiding love for her entire song catalogue as the hotel management, then near, far, wherever you are, you will appreciate the unending repetition of her songs.
Londontraveller7484 (8/5): Super friendly place - would stay again! - We stayed here for a work conference and the staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating... they really went out of their way to make your Buffet meals (breakfast and lunch) were good with wide variety. Evening meals took a long time to come but were good quality still. Rooms were clean and very comfortable/spacious. Wifi was strong and great views out over Kigali on the back. Conference room was everything we needed. Would visit/use again!

639bernicej (10/5): RWANDA DARLING - AMAZING PLACE - This hotel provides a very warm service, staff are always at your service and they do everything with a smile especially Geoffrey who worked tirelessly to ensure our conference was a success. Stanley the manager was also very supportive. The hotel provides all comfort, very clean,large air conditioned rooms.The view of Kigali landscape is also breathtaking from the rooms balcony.
nlmace (6/5): Safe and serviceable - We spent one night here when our other hotel had a gap in our room availability. Pros: Clean Nice staff Quiet Nice view Good food Air conditioning Cons: Not very updated Beds barely off the floor Price seemed as much as Nicer hotels in the city center. Overall it was a nice and serviceable hotel. Though for the price, I would expect more than it delivered.
1003AndyS (8/5): Give it a try - I spent 6 weeks at the hotel. By then, the new manager Stanley had arrived and things were definitely tighter than at first. The staff are very friendly, the breakfast is good, the view is great, the rooms fine (with the exception of dim lighting in the evenings). The hotel managed to fix the wifi, which had been poor, by installing new routers while I was there. I didn't try the pool or massage. The hotel business seems to be mainly day use (conferences, meetings) rather than room guests. Would I go back? Yes, definitely.

Donald (8/5): Kigali Portofino 2015 - Firstly - the staff were very friendly and helpful. A plus point. The restaurant staff and the bar staff were sometimes confused by basic requests and the service was slow. The hotel is in need of renovation, carpets dull and dark, seen better days. The room was OK and the bathroom clean. The room staff were efficient. I ate something from the Xmas buffet which made me sick, not a pleasant experience.
