Guest Reviews
- Allan Lim (9/5): - The room was clean and comfortable but no hangers? Room names instead of numbers and the check in note did not have a graphic as to which room was the room we booked. I guess the parking was on a first come first serve basis as there were no clear marks.
- Col (10/5): -
- Louise (10/5): Great value and a comfy, peaceful stay! - Great spot in Ranfurly, clean spacious room, comfy bed, good shower and excellent kitchen facilities. Very friendly host. We drove up to Naseby for dinner at the Royal Hotel (highly recommended!) and had a great overnight stay at Hawkdun Lodge. Great value for money! N/A
- Ryan (8/5): Warm and comfortable stay. Perfect for our one night in Ranfurly on the Otago Rail Trail. - Everything was arranged for our arrival even though the staff weren’t there. Room was clean, tidy and warm. 2 minute walk to supermarket and pub. Will sty again.
- chris (10/5): - Lovely overnight stay.warm room tv went and just a comfy stay. Staff great. Town very tiny and pub not worth the food. You’re probably better to go to next town if needing food or just take a takeaway to re heat.
- Beattie (9/5): - Common room greatfor our party
- Robin (10/5): Very brief as it was only for 1 Night. A great place to stay. - The deluxe room was very nice and roomy. We enjoyed our short stay.
Once we arrived there was a note on the office telling us what room we were in and that the key was inside the room. We saw no staff from the time we arrived as the office was closed and the same in the morning. When we left in the morning there was still no one in the office so we left the key in the door.
- Douglas (10/5): -
- Juliane (8/5): Ok for a night - Easily reached off the rail trail and close enough to town to walk in and get food Nobody to check is in- but they did leave instructions.
The space is very simple and a very tiny kitchenette.

- d7b3add66b4f72f1c0759773c9a3f46a (6/5): Extra Charge for already confirmed Twin Room - High quality room, linen, towels and beds. I had booked a room with the options double bed or twin bed. I asked for a twin bed and that was confirmed by the hotel through booking.com. Upon arrival, I got a room with a double bed and asked for the booked twin bed room. Then I was charged 40 NZ$ on top of what I already paid to get the twin bed. They argued it was the fault of booking.com, but I do not agree. Also, I did not like that. .
- Dallas (10/5): -
- Linda (10/5): Great spot. One could easily spend a few days here. - Lovely newish condo style motel units with cooking facilities and very comfortable beds. Very close to the Otago rail trail.
- Vanetta (8/5): Clean. Good parking. - Central and easy to find.
Plenty of outside parking.
Front office not open very often and phone calls go to voicemail.. difficult when you have questions. Can be a little noisy from other guests entering / leaving and talking in car parking area outside windows.
Property decor a little dated but made up by friendly staff and cleanliness.
- Tracey (10/5): - Very clean, nice layout. Everything covered. Very comfortable.
- Corey (8/5): -
- John (8/5): - Handy location, easy checking, friendly staff.

- Grayson (9/5): -
- Lynley (8/5): Was perfect for our needs - Clean handy location friendly staff
- Helen (10/5): - We had a lovely room, the main kitchen was avaliable for us to use & very well equipped. Everywhere was exceptionally clean, the owner originated from Buxton & with us being from Sheffield we had a great chat. We needed a rest from our busy site seeing tour of NZ & found nothing to dislike here, it might be a bit quiet for some but for us it was perfect, just what we needed.
- Brian (9/5): Suited our requirements, good proximity to Rail Trail - Very quiet, proximity to town, comfortable and clean. Met our needs. Television reception and connection to channels poor. Lighting in room was very dull.
- Zane (10/5): -
- GEOFF (10/5): - Really nice large room. Very comfortable Couldn't find a guest laundry option.
- Mary (10/5): -
- Shane (10/5): Great clean well equipped apartment - Apartment was well equipped and central to everything we needed. .
- Enzo (10/5): -
- Erl (8/5): -
- Chris (10/5): -
- Neville (7/5): Comfortable parking a little bit tight - They said there was electric blankets on all beds but there was not on my bed
- Lynneandmartyn (8/5): We would stay again - That the unit was close to everything we needed. The bed was comfortable. Very clean and tidy. The shower door had dropped and needed fixing. The pressure was ok but could do with a bit of a upgrade with the shower slider and head. The parking was pretty tight but in fairness we had a van so had to use the disabled.
- Eroica (7/5): -
- Lois & Geoff and Joy (9/5): Great - Nice and comfortable and staff a management very friendly and helpfull Nothing
- Don (9/5): -
- Nicola (10/5): -
- Nicole (10/5): - Really nice and clean.
- Grahame (9/5): Nearby Waipiata Hotel a great place for a meal and meeting/seeing the local farming community. - I usually judge a motel by its shower. Modern, good consistent water supply, and new fluffy towels. Yes Hawkdun exceeded my expectations.
- Rosemary (10/5): - We have stayed before and will stay again
- Aletta (9/5): Nice, roomy place. Very clean. - The Hawkdun room is lovely. Lots of facilities and ideal for cooking. A real asset.
- Andrea (8/5): Great accommodation and friendly staff. Would definitely stay again. - Lovely unit and very comfortable bed. Absolutely great stay but found office unmanned most of time - numbers on door to contact - sent text and got no response. It would be nice if hosts were more responsive. I found the same issue when initially enquiring about this booking. Other than that lovely and friendly.
- Brett (9/5): Nearly a 10. - Clean, good value, quiet. $25 breakfast was a little too expensive for what you got. For that price you could have a full English in town. Maybe add some cold meats and cheese to better justify it. Otherwise it would have been a 10.
- Sedgwick (8/5): -
- Graeme (8/5): If we ventured to Ranfurly we would definitely stay again without hesitation - Facility was handy to township and walking along the rail trail. Very - quite location. Overall street appearance very good and the interior of our two units in a small rural community exceeded our expectations. We were more than happy with the overall experience.
- katting (9/5): -
- Michael (8/5): Over all is a nice place to stay - Kitchen was closed, TV setup needs to be sorted, milk was off but got sorted parking was not outside room
- Peter (10/5): -
- Peter (10/5): -
- Henk (8/5): - Alles was netjes. fijne schuur voor de fietsen ?
- John (8/5): -
- Jackie (7/5): Adequate. - Clean and tidy. Good shower. Comfortable sofa and chairs. Very little cooking equipment. In NZ you expect to be able to cook in a Motel. TV didn't work.
- Lyn (9/5): Lovely motel unit in a fabulous wee town. We enjoyed our stay! - Very spacious and clean. Bed was very comfortable. It would have been helpful if the motel provided information on its facilities in the unit i.e. a compendium.
It’s a shame the kitchen isn’t equipped for cooking as it is such a spacious kitchen and the ability to prepare meals in the unit, rather than in a shared communal space, would have made it an exceptional place to stay.
- Lizene (10/5): -
- Chelsea (10/5): - Everything! It’s a great place and we can’t wait to come back!
- Anne-Margaret (8/5): Just what I needed for a short stay. -
- Donald (9/5): Recommended in Ranfurly - Very comfortable room, easy parking right outside the door, excellent location with an easy stroll into the centre of Ranfurly (very small!), a remarkable common room available for groups - my second stay since 2023 and it was every bit as good as the last time. And it is such a good-looking building!! Only one coat hanger in my room and the only milk provided were just tiny sachets. BYO if you travel with your own breakfast cereal!
- Bev (9/5): Lovely motel, run by kind lovely people -
- Fiona (10/5): -
- Graeme (9/5): Very clean and tidy unit with a comfy bed, modern accommodation at a very reasonable price - Modern, clean and warm and cozy
- Darby (8/5): -
- Stephen Sinclair (10/5): - Very friendly reception. Unit large and very clean. Heatpump effective. Met all our requirements. The large communal lounge, kitchen dining area was excellent. Large fridge/freezer also available for guests. A fan heater in bathroom would have been more effective for heating the bathroom. No issues
- Thelma (8/5): - Ideal for our stay, bed very comfortable, heating good, clean. Great place to stay.
- Alan (9/5): -
- Tony (10/5): -
- James (9/5): - Space, facilities, comfortable bed. Shower floor slippery
- Liz (10/5): Excellent - Lovely lady managing, made our stay very welcoming
- Kate (8/5): -
- Owen (8/5): - TV had reception issues so could not use
- Owen (6/5): - TV had continuous reception outages so couldnt watch anything.
- Su (10/5): - This is a lovely spot to stay - very friendly and able to accommodate my need for twin beds as I was travelling with my adult son. We were put in one of the accessible units - my work colleagues use wheelchairs so I pay attention to accessibility now, and this room was spot on.
We could easily walk into town for a meal - get tot he pub early on Friday night for the meat raffle :)
- Christine (8/5): Large units - Large units, good location.
- Bruno Gatimel (8/5): -
- Wendy (10/5): -
- Wendy (10/5): -
- Roy (9/5): -
- Browett (9/5): Superb -
- Eleanor (8/5): - Very helpful staff when we arrived on dark. The unit was cold on entry and the aircon hard to get going. otherwise all good.
- Pauline (8/5): Very good - Great kitchen area One light was not working
- Vicci (10/5): Lovely well appointed room with everything we need. - We always enjoy saying here. The manager is lovely and we always feel very welcome. The TV could have been a bit bigger for the size of the room.
- Sara (10/5): Awesome - It was ready before 2pm There were 2 of each cutlery and there were 7 of us
- Meghan (9/5): Superb -
- Anne (8/5): Very good - Location, friendly staff, comfy bed, nice bathroom, heated tiles in bathroom. The TV kept going off. I gave up in the end. The pillows were a bit hard. There was a choice, but the softer one wasn't very soft. The lighting was dim. One bulb blown.
- Owen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Helen (9/5): Superb - Very clean and spacious with pleasant decor.
- Eva (10/5): Exceptional -
- Diana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dave (8/5): - Only fault was we couldn't operate the TV. Reception couldn't help us either.
- Roland (10/5): I would definitely stay there again. - Everything was excellent and would recommend the accommodation . There is nothing to dislike.
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Theressa (9/5): Superb - Room was spacious and clean, the bed was very comfortable. The free upgrade was appreciated :) and easy self check-in
- OnAir36552139396 (4/5): Good room, but hospitality clearly lacking. - When I stated to the lady at reception I had 'paid' less than what she asked me to pay (as she was unawares I had already paid), I then had to wait as she then phoned Expedia/Wotif for five/ten minutes and had an argument to them about selling rooms to cheap, rather awkward as I had to stand there.. This was before checking us in and giving the keys to the room...Three nights, room never serviced (website states they do), would suggest freeview tv needs a rejig as could only get five channels, two of which religious. Good room, but hospitality clearly lacking.
- Kaye (9/5): Superb -
- Greg (8/5): Very good -
- Richard (8/5): Very good -
- Kellie (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely big comfy bed with electric blankets.... nice big spa bath Nothing to put something into the microwave to heat up like a microwave proof jug or bowl ... and
- Chloe (10/5): Exceptional - Room was spacious, quiet and comfortable. The host was accommodating of our request to stay an extra night.
