Guest Reviews
- Scott (4/5): - Nothing like what as listed on line. Old, run down, trains running all hours of the night
- Roberta (10/5): Great location, spacious & clean - Loved this place! We stayed here while riding in El Tour de Tucson. So close to the start/finish at the Conv Ctr and downtown restaurants. Cool lounge and courtyard, live music Sat night. Easy check in, showed us where our room was. Super clean, large room. Able to request a roller bed for our son to stay the 1st night since he was starting ride at 7 am. Bathroom was bright, all amenities needed (shampoo, cond, body wash, lotion, make up wipe). Room had fridge, microwave. Loved the retro/old school vibe. We will stay here again.
- Dave (10/5): Cool place to stay. - We were in town for the tour de Tucson. The hotel was super conveniently located next to the start line of the tour. The staff were very accommodating. They let us store our bikes there before our room was ready. We also kept our car parked there until the event was over. Super chill place. I would recommend.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Loved this little hotel. Cute retro decor. Great onsite restaurant and bar. Would definitely stay again!
- Kerrilyn (10/5): - Great property we stay here once a year.
- Tanya (10/5): - Stayed here for a week in the early summer. Room was a good size, plenty of space to move around. Would have liked some kind of table or desk though in the room we were staying in, had to do all my computer stuff on the bed. Temperature in the room was comfortable. Bathroom was nice. I never had a problem with parking, and I always felt safe but would have liked an extra lock on the door just for peace of mind. The food in the lounge was excellent and the staff were always nice. When we had to cut our stay short they were very understanding and issused us a refund.
- Kenneth (8/5): - Attentive service by staff. No pool.
- Stacy (10/5): - Great customer service and accommodations
- scott b (10/5): a sonoran desert gem - the clifton is a great experience... an ideal blend between a classic motel throwback and a modern, hip experience. a short walk to galleries, the heart of downtown, and food options in the surrounding barrio neighborhood.
- Sierra (10/5): - Super cute property. The room was simple and beautiful, and the vaulted ceilings and concrete floors/walls were very neat. Loved the midcentury flair. The courtyard and bar were a nice touch. Affordable, easy, and a short walk to downtown Tucson on a shockingly quiet street. Would absolutely stay again!
- Cindy (10/5): - Not your cookie-cutter hotel. Fun, retro vibe and close to downtown.
- Douglas (10/5): - This 70s retro feel hotel is really amazing. VERY dog friendly and a real bargain for what you get. Will be staying here again for sure!
- Heather (10/5): - Clean, spacious room with unique style and everything we needed. Staff were all kind and attentive to any needs we had. Quiet, lovely garden with seating to enjoy. Also, close to everything.
- Nancy (10/5): - Such a fun place to stay! Love the courtyard and open bar.
- Virginia (10/5): - Most rooms surround a courtyard. On Friday happy hour included a DJ and some local artisans had booths. Staff is friendly and helpful. A definite good vibe here!
- Mahmood (8/5): - Nice hotel, great staff... just needs privacy
- Dennis (10/5): - Mid century vibe. Comfortable. No pool and only 7:30am coffee available. Nice downtown location without congestion. Easy parking. Barrio close by for history fix. Many long time Mexican restaurants nearby. El Terero, etc.
- Kelsey (10/5): Great affordable cool place to stay - I love this place - it’s my go to.
- Verified traveler (10/5): excellent deal - Excellent value for the money: a very clean, very quiet room and great service. Very conveniently located.
I will definitely recommend it.
- Stacy (8/5): Nice place to stay I would stay there again. - Very nice place to stay. The only issue I had was the noise from the people sitting out in the courtyard After hours the first night people were out in the courtyard until 1130.
- julio cesar (10/5): - The staff was really great and hospitable, really awesome drinks and food. I happened to be there on movie night and was really fun. My room was very spacious with some nice vintage decor, would return anytime. Close to downtown, Bariio Viejo MOCA Tucson, super great location.
- Rajiv (10/5): - Beautiful property. Excellent service. Very close to prime shopping and restaurants in Scottsdale Old Town.
- Raúl H (10/5): - it will be our go to lodging in Tucson
- Monika (10/5): - We had a little bungalow was very retro nothing fancy but very cool and clean bed was Comfy air worked great even had to turn it up was a bit cool, you could get a record player with records so cool, the restaurant and bar being right there very convenient and the food was very good and presented very pretty, the Bartender Asya made the best Margarita I ever had tasted so overall yes I would stay again.
- Leah (10/5): - The staff was wonderful, very helpful. Beautiful courtyard with entertainment, food and drink. Very clean - no carpet concrete floors that were cool to the touch. Very nice neighborhood.
- Joseph (10/5): - Unique and chill place (record players to take to your room, relaxed and not loud bar on the courtyard, interesting rooms) and nice to chat with the day hostess. Situated in the barrio viejo, nice place to walk around and get a coffee, but still not far from downtown.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Love how we feel like we step back in time!!! It our get away from the everyday!
- Kendra (10/5): - The room was clean, spacious and the whole hotel was well decorated. It had a retro Palm Springs vibe and decor that really differentiated it from the surrounding hotels. While there wasn’t a pool or room service, there was a bar/restaurant mere steps from my room and everyone who worked there (and hung out there) were friendly and engaging. This wasn’t just a hotel, it was an experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5): STAY HERE - Highly recommend staying at this hotel! It has a great modern 70s vibe, the hotel bar and restaurant was awesome, and the service was even better!
- Amy (10/5): - Chose this place because it was walkable to a concert at Rialto Theater. Cute little place with a 70s retro vibe.
- deborah (10/5): - Very ecectic and unique property
- Deborah (10/5): One-of-a-kind Hidden Gem! - A hidden gem straight out of the 50's! Unique and Kitschy! Gotta love the record players and retro albums. And the lamps are a hoot! Stop by the Redlight Lounge where Saints & Sinners meet for dinner and go for the Bunkhouse martini! And, be sure to check out the local fav's and discounts for keyholders on the website! All suggestions were spot on! Absolutely loved the Coronet Restaurant just a few blocks away.
- Tania (6/5): - The Clifton is in a great location, and the folks running it seem like really good people. There was an awesome pop-up event happening when we checked in, and just an overall positive vibe. I can see what they are going for with their aesthetic- it just needs to be a little more clean and polished. The decor is sparse, the paint is a bit shabby, and it really only has basic amenities. A comfortable chair or loveseat would have been nice, along with some more art. It just looks like they are still getting things up and running. That said, I'd rather support a local independent business than any chain, and they are heading in the right direction!
- Christine (8/5): - Very retro and different place to rest your head. Very cool little place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel was very cute and the rooms were big. The only negatives were that the bar/restaurant closed earlier than advertised both nights that I stayed there and I stayed on the first floor and heard the people above me walking around and making some noise in bed... so the walls/floors are very thin.
- Judith (10/5): - We enjoyed our night at the Downtown Clifton. It is a cute, funky, comfortable place to stay. The location is great. We enjoyed being outdoors at the bar.
- Penne (6/5): - The hotel was a 10 minute safe walk to the convention center, music hall and main downtown area.
Our challenge with the property was the walls are definately not sound proof. Lots of activity in the room upstairs made it hard to get some sleep.
- Blair (10/5): - Lots of character re hotel. I haven’t walked the neighborhood yet
- Pamela (10/5): - Old hotel with cool vintage boho vibe. Bed and pillows were comfy and bathroom included large bottles of body wash, shampoo and conditioner. The only thing I would suggest is a full length mirror. Went to a concert and would have been nice to check out my outfit. Lounge area and bar were cool and jalapeño margarita was delicious.
- Megan (10/5): - Great place
- Vaishnavi (8/5): - Good property. A little overpriced.
- Cameron (10/5): - I love this motel! Super cute, kitschy and unique. The live music in the courtyard added a great vibe. Really liked the concrete floor (no carpet, yay!), hand soap in a dispenser rather than a bar, and artsy water glasses.
- Timothy (10/5): Great - Very cool place and walkable to the center of downtown. Dinner and drinks were great and ate there both nights. Only area I can recommend improvement on would be newer pillows for the bed. I would stay again.
- Jennifer (6/5): - We were disappointed to be placed in a room in the annex. While the bed was very comfortable, the room and bathroom felt old and lackluster. No iron in the room was also an issue. When we asked at the front desk how we came to be placed there, the response was that we hadn’t requested a room in the actual hotel. As we had never been there, not sure how we would have known to do that. The lounge was pleasant as well. This was our first visit to Tucson and we will come again, I doubt we would choose this hotel again, though.
- Alexandra (10/5): - Had an amazing stay, would seriously recommend!
- darius (8/5): - A great place!
- LAURA (10/5): - Great stay! Retro vibe.
- Janet (10/5): Fun and comfort - Loved the old furnishings. Location was great for our needs. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. They had music on Saturday.
- William (10/5): DG Tucson - Get place to stay. Very retro.
- Eric (10/5): - A great little gem just blocks from downtown.
- Adela (6/5): - *PROS: walkable to downtown (and to the free shuttle bus), lots of TV channels, convenient bar/restaurant right in the lobby, remodeled bathrooms, good heaters. They even had a projected movie in the courtyard one night.
*CONS: Rooms are sparse (feel a little "cold"). Also, our car was broken into in the parking lot, and several things were stolen. The area seems safe enough, but the front desk says this is known to happen downtown, so just be sure to take everything with you into the room. We enjoyed Tucson otherwise, but the break-in was a big bummer.
- Verified traveler (8/5): SoCal Traveler - This hotel is a hidden gem. Excellent service. Big shout out to Genesis and the bar tender! Rooms are mid-century themed but need a few more touches to complete the look. Wall paintings or photos would be a nice added touch. Throw rug in room was dirty and should be washed more regularly. Water pressure needs improvement. Loved the courtyard dining, fire pit and chill vibe. Check-in and out was incredibly smooth and efficient. Have already booked our next visit/stay. See you soon.
- James (10/5): Funky, Fun, Cool - Stay there! - Really fun and friendly renovated motel on the edge of downtown Tucson. Great dining options within walking distance, and fun "speakeasy" with food and cocktails on site. Room decor was minimalist mid-century modern cool. Beds were comfy but the AC/Heat unit is a bit loud. Service from front desk and bartender were both awesome. Really a gem of a hotel that's a lot better option than paying a lot more at one of the big chains.
- Vera (8/5): - Good location, hotel and amenities were nice. It was a little noisy because walls are thin and we had someone upstairs walking loudly.
- diana (8/5): - rooms were clean and quiet.
- lulu (10/5): Great find. - Brilliant. Excellent value. Super clean, spacious, quirky. Helpful, staff. Great bar and food. Good location..easy walking distance to down town yet quiet.
- WADE (10/5): - Reminiscent of days gone by, the receptionist walked us to our room, let us in, and waited for us to give our approval. Anyone can borrow a record player and LP 33 rpm albums to take back to their room and play. They leave old 10 cent paperbacks at the nightstand. The Red Lounge is relaxed, quirky, and welcoming to everyone, and they have a great chef. You can walk anywhere downtown, and the trolly provides free service on Saturdays if you want to get out to the U of A campus.
- James (10/5): - We loved our stay at the Downtown Clifton. Upon arrival we were able to pick out a selection of vinyl to rock out to in our room—later we went back for games! Staffers were friendly and organized. We enjoyed being in walking distance to the Rialto and the Congress Hotel (as well as many excellent restaurants—several were thoughtfully recommended on the Clifton’s website and some included discounts associated with our stay). Even with its proximity to nightlife—including the Clifton’s own great bar and restaurant—our room was remarkably quiet.
- James (10/5): - What a great place, they have great food and drinks right there. They have great drip coffee or you can walk to quite a few amazing coffee shops.
- Daniel (10/5): Valentines - The Hotel Clifton has become our favorite place to stay in Tucson. The staff are wonderful, thank you Genesis for arranging our late arrival, love the food and the staff at the Red Light Inn and the retro feel to the rooms is awesome. Can’t think of a better way to celebrate Valentines Day a little early than at the Clifton
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very cool place to stay. - Good location an easy walk from all the downtown attractions and dining options. The customer service was unmatched. We were checking in late after the front desk was closed and they left a voice mail and email with instructions of how to get the room key and had no issue. The bar attached was also very cool. Overall a very cool, laid back vibe to the place.
- Francis (8/5): Worth a look - Great location for my needs - access to downtown and a quick tram ride to campus - and the lounge was fun.
- Austin (8/5): Great location, charming motel - Downtown Clifton was a charming hotel in downtown Tuscon. Well decorated. Convenient location. They didn’t offer bottled water in the room though. I would recommend that.
- Paloma (10/5): - My boyfriend & I loved our stay! Unique & Clean. Great service.
- Phil (10/5): - What a great place! Great location with super friendly staff. Great bar and restaurant on site with excellent service.
- Lloydon (10/5): - Great, great place. I liked the live music, recorders, and room aesthetics. Don't know what happened, but I was told I had a lobby charge when I was checking out. We didn't eat or drink from the restaurant though. Still, an awesome location and experience. Would recommend to friends. Probably one of the best hotels in Tucson.
- Verified traveler (4/5): WHOMP WHOMP :( - Sadly, our stay at The Clifton was a big disappointment and our room was a complete dud.
Such a lovely exterior with exquisite landscaping & charm, once inside our Bunkhouse room (#8) we were met with a musty smell being emitted from an AC unit with brown fuzz and dirty drips around the vent. We tried to open the windows, but most of the handles to the casement windows were broken. The unsealed concrete flooring is wonderfully modern in concept, but ours were super dirty even after we requested them to be cleaned again after our arrival. We had to wear shoes inside otherwise our feet or socks would quickly turn black.
The bed & linens are super basic & fairly uncomfortable. The handmade bed frames are a nice touch, but I wish they had added a headboard or even fluffier pillows to prevent your back from hitting the cold brick walls. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the room didn’t have any other places to sit.
Other things:
-peeling wall paint
-broken towel rails
-tattered window coverings
BIG POSTIVES included the friendly housekeeping staff who gave our puppy all the cuddles, the bartenders that gave us ice each night since there were no machines and the lovely neighborhood location. The Clifton’s Keyholders Club is great & we popped into several of their partners, flashed our key & got a sweet little discount.
Ultimately, we felt that our room is in need of major TLC & not suitable for guests, especially not for the 4 nights we stayed.
- Judith (4/5): - We knew that the property was supposed to be historic and quirky, but it was extremely over-priced for what we got. Our room was in the original building. The bathroom has probably not been renovated since it was built in the 1940s. It had cracked tiles, towel bar that had fallen off the wall (and not replaced) and mildew on the shower grout. The cheap blinds and curtains weren’t adequate. We had to hang a blanket on top of them. On Saturday night, they did have live music in the courtyard, which was nice. Otherwise - not much positive about our experience.
- Mikael (8/5): - Great neighborhood location
- Matthew (8/5): Funky retro vintage near downtown Tucson - What a cute, funky, retro place! It's modern and vintage all at the same time. Old school check in with an actual key, and the concierge walked me to my room and showed me around. Outdoor courtyard, with a bar and restaurant on site that opens at 4:00. Live music on Saturday night. Got a glass of wine to take to my room one night, and enjoyed a glass of wine another night while working on my laptop in the courtyard. About 2 miles from the U of Arizona campus, so it was perfect for visiting my son. Very close to downtown, but not in the noisy part. My only complaint was hearing noisy walking in the unit above me early in the morning, and a train that honked a lot as it passed nearby on Saturday night. Free parking on-site too. Would TOTALLY stay here again!
- Stanley (10/5): - From the moment we arrived we felt comfortable at this cool little hotel. The rooms were roomy and clean, the staff friendly, the “bar scene” lively but not too loud. A great vibe!
- Meredith (10/5): - I love this hotel for its uniqueness that makes a visit to Tucson worthwhile. It has a laid back atmosphere that I enjoy when travelling. I always stay here as it never disappoints.
- David (10/5): - Nicely kept hotel close (walking distance) to the downtown area. Wonderful bar and restaurant as well.
- Ricky (10/5): A wonderful relaxing retro experience - This is a great hotel! It is a wonderfully relaxing property with great music, friendly people, and I believe the best burger in town. The added touch was the record players with albums from the 50's through the 80's. We had a great time relaxing every evening on the patio listening to music and enjoying a diverse selection from the bar.
- Eric (10/5): - Funky and fun. We’ve been loving cool renovations of well located motels. This was one of the best we’ve seen.
- Korey (6/5): - I really struggle with this review as in many ways I really like the place! I stayed in the bungalow side, which is a cute mixture of midcentury & WILD west, but definitely older in construction (think no real estate in the bathroom). The room has lots of square footage which means it is spacious but it isn't really usable. Parking was right outside the room which was great for luggage, but being as the rooms don't have much sound protection you can hear everything outside. It rained during my stay and it sounded like I was in a tin can! Oh-that early morning train is NOT to be underestimated. They had decent coffee in the morning, and a great suggestion for breakfast (Five Points Cafe). I went into this reservation knowing that it might be a bit noisy but I wanted a place where I could walk to downtown and this fit the bill. The guests were really quiet so the noise was more because sound made it into the room vs this place being party central. Being as they allow pets I was a little concerned about cleanliness, but aside from catching a whiff of musty/pet smell once or twice I would never have known they were allowed. I do wish the staff had been wearing masks, but they were all very nice and helpful. Overall a very cute property near downtown and if I ever need a place to stay after a concert I would definitely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The Inn is funky, retro, a little frazzled around the edges, but clean, cute and comfortable. I was grateful that I had brought ear plugs because my room overlooked the courtyard/open bar area and there were folks down there enjoying life and were a teensy bit loud as I was going to bed. Also, when you check in, make sure that you go to the new office on the right side of the parking lot-NOT the original “concierge” office, which is a small dark storage room!😳
- Susan (10/5): Super fun night on the road! - Great bar and restaurant right outside our room. Our doggie loved it as much as us! Comfortable rooms. Very fun experience! Would stay again and recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - So much to love about the Clifton. Staff are great, friendly, responsive. Great atmosphere to the hotel. Loved hanging around the patio for dinner and night cap. Will definitely pick the Clifton for next trip to Tucson.
- Lawrence (10/5): - Well appointed, simple but friendly and clean
- Sandra (10/5): What a gem!! - What a fun little motel! I felt like I was transported in time-I loved it. Very clean, comfortable bed and air conditioner kept us nice and cool. The food in their bar area is excellent!! Definitely would stay again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Big open rooms with great decorative touches. Includes fridge and microwave. Concrete floor good for those traveling with dogs. Staff is friendly and helpful. Restaurant/bar was great. Will be staying here whenever we pass through.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great local gem - We had a wonderful stay at the Clifton. The people were very friendly. The room was comfortable and had some nice design touches. We ate in the restaurant and the food was very good. This is a great locally owned, well-run hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved this little re-done gem. It’s retro, done well!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice place. Clean rooms. Had a tasty dinner at the restaurant/bar. Affordable drink and food prices. I am glad I stayed here.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a very cute hotel. I loved how old meets new here. The lounge and patio area were perfect for enjoying a few drinks.
The hotel shower, fridge were very clean, but the floors were dirty- that is our only complaint - the floors could have been swept and cleaned better.
Would we stay here again? Definitely
- Kenneth (10/5): Great character, service, and location in Tucson - Great place to stay in downtown Tucson. Welcoming and sincere staff, clean and stylish room, and an excellent restaurant (The Red Light Lounge) with a good wine list and wonderful coffee in the morning. Funky vibe that is open to all types of visitors and travelers. Would definitely stay here again the next time we're in Tucson.
- Paula (10/5): Overnight getaway - Loved the location for proximity to downtown Tucson, but off the beaten path enough to be quiet and relaxing. This hotel is really cute and vintage vibe adds to the experience. Very clean and comfortable. Staff friendly and welcoming.
- Diane (10/5): Excellent Staff and Fun Vibe - We loved our two nite stay in our cool room built back in 1948. We were a bit late arriving after a long drive but were met by Matt who was so welcoming and friendly we felt like long-time friends.
I must also mention I contacted the hotel before our arrival and spoke to Matt who answered all my questions and more and said they were looking forward to our visit.
The hotel is very fun and they offered us a record played upon check-in with a wonderful record selection. The rooms are a bit sparse but our bed was comfortable and we had a small fridge and microwave in the big closet.
We were very impressed with old 1960s Arizona Highways magazines in our room and Vintage paperbacks.
They have coffee in the office in the morning, just a few steps away. Also easy parking in front of your room.
Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to have cocktails and a bite at the restaurant, but judging from the crowd it must be great! Perhaps on our next visit.
It’s an easy walk downtown which was fun, but a bit “sketchy” at nite when we walked back.
Definitely recommend, thanks to Matt and the staff!
- nickolas (10/5): - It was amazing and everything was so clean and overall had a great experience.
- Denise (8/5): Cool Motel in a cool neighborhood!! - I love the Downtown Clifton & it's walkable to plenty of restaurants & bars. The neighbor is turning over & it is super cute!
Only issue was morning coffee, 1st morning it was available in the lounge at 7:00am as promised but 2nd morning it was not there even at 7:30 so I left & walked to the Congress Hotel for coffee & breakfast! Either have machines in the rooms or have coffee in early morning.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Front desk was very helpful, lounge was pleasant with music and yummy cocktails and good food, and the decor was unique.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This hotel was in a great location with a really cool vibe. The lounge/restaurant was perfect in every way: the cocktails, food and service.
The service overall at this little gem was the best. Everyone was kind and friendly and super helpful.
Our dog loved it too, we will be back!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a fun place to stay. I’ve been there 3 times, and each time was the same: they are welcoming, friendly, and have a great sense of humor. Read up about them. Highlight is there bar and food service. The set up makes for a comfortable community setting. I’ve met people each and every stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Had a wonderful first post Vaccine trip to meet family and friends at the Downtown Clifton Hotel Tucson. Enjoyed hanging out with the owner and finding out about their upcoming property later in the year. The rooms were perfect. Would definitely stay here again. Very unique property with a great sense of place .
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel's check-in process was incredibly easy. The front desk showed me in and gave me a very brief history of the property. The room was clean and modern. I didn't get a chance to patronage the bar, but it looked calm and inviting. There were guests of all demographics and I would absolutely book with this hotel again.
- Daniel (10/5): New favorite - Loved our stay at the Clifton. We have a new favorite place to stay for date night in Tucson.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room was big and the bed was very comfortable. Free Netflix was a plus. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would definately stay there again. Close to places to eat and drink.
- Jennifer (10/5): Great place to stay! - The room was great! Retro without feeling outdated. The lounge and restaurant were fabulous and the food was excellent! I highly recommend staying here!
