Guest Reviews
- Milianne (4/5): Basically a bed rental in a pretty box. Hospitality experience really lacking. - Nice design o the public spaces. No water in room; no access to drinking water in facility outside of operating businesses, bad lighting in room. Parking isn’t owned by hotel. Loud.
- Phillip (10/5): Cool relaxed vibe - Funky style old school elevator steam punk esthetic A bit frumpy
- Robert (6/5): Close to Historic Park Theater venue we attended. - The bathroom was awesome! The room small with a super creaky bed. Twas quaint though for 1 night. Dillon at the front desk was super! He let us borrow a charger for our phone. Parking was almost as much as the room, $42. Won't be coming back.
- Francisca (9/5): Great place for a night out in downtown Providence. - It’s in downtown Providence! The front desk person didn’t talk much.
- Chan (10/5): -

- Katherine (1/5): Complete BS hotel - It was located conveniently Everything. The room was small and had bunk beds like a prison cell. The beds were horribly uncomfortable and the temperature controls didn’t work. There wasn’t any bottled water or even a coffee maker in the room and there wasn’t a vending machine or anything or ice maker. Absolutely horrendous and expensive
- lopez (2/5): - No like us charge 2 times Nop
- Ingrid (4/5): - location The room description WAS NOT CLEAR. Leaving me in a bind because I could not get another room at a different hotel.
- Patterson’s (10/5): Great experience all around - Great job from all
Mr. Patterson approved -The attached restaurant could’ve been open more
- Mr. (10/5): -Every time I come to this hotel, I always have a great experience. Great job to all great job to the owners and managem - -Antique feel great staff great location great amenities all around great experience…
Mr. Patterson approved… -The restaurant not opening more that’s attached
- Matthew (3/5): Like instagram? stay here. Like comfortable hotels? Go elsewhere - This hotel is all about image and appealing on Instagram, and bad at most of the functional requirements of being a hotel. The bar and restaurant were hard to access. The coffee bar didn't open because staff didn't show up. The room is spartan to the point of uncomfortable. - Mukesh Jha (5/5): Its an ok stay given I was alone. Would have been very difficult if I had my family with me - Location Amenities in the room

- Kerri (1/5): Will not be going back. - It was close to the arena for the Providence Bruins game. Where do I begin? The elevator which was something that looked like it was out of an old warehouse was broken the night we arrived. In the morning it worked but the doors don’t stay open and the gate is heavy. My boyfriend found a clump of hair in the tub when we got there. And he left his winter coat in the room. When we called the hotel they never looked for it or called us back. Way over priced with no amenities.
- Neela (10/5): Great alternative to a huge corporate hotel - location and vibe were great. no need to tay at the big box conference hotel. stay here and take a break from work people. N/A
- Kevin (7/5): A fine example of a boutique hotel, reminding me of the ones I've seen in France and Italy. - Wonderful style, charm, and a perfect location in the city. Fine enough if you want a special place to spend a night. And a special mention to an old world elevator that makes the whole experience just a bit more magical. TV is outdated and the mount was broken when I arrived. Noise from other rooms came in clearly when trying to sleep. AC unit also was loud but questionable as to whether it did it's job at all. Bathroom is quite cramped, though effective.
- Sara (7/5): -
- Sandy (9/5): - The beds are comfortable and a good size. The coffee bar is excellent and dogs are welcome! Noise from outside does travel indoors. A white noise machine would be a nice amenity to have.

- amberdZ5772WU (8/5): Pros and cons - Location is great. Most of the small staff is great. Coffee shop onsite is a plus, but be aware there are NO decaf or no-caf options except water and hot chocolate - there are full service coffee shops very close though. Parking in the lots is expensive, but with a little planning, you can park on the street overnight for free, right in front of the hotel. We had a Queen Room. It was clean and in good condition, but no place to hang clothes other than a couple of hooks on the wall with some hangers, and no dresser or shelves (we used the wide window sills as shelves). Bed was comfortable but squeaky; would not be good for a light sleeper. We did not hear much noise from the karaoke bar downstairs although we were only on the second floor. There was some street noise, but less than expected, given the hotel’s location. The bathroom is TINY, almost European in size; a larger person would have trouble in the shower. The heat was unreliable; we had to get the staff to manually reset it in the basement twice during our 3-night stay, but they were very gracious about it. The plumbing in the toilet was a little finicky, often requiring a couple of flushes. It’s a quirky old building with an interesting history in an excellent location. Overall, we had a nice stay.

- u93btm7wt8 (6/5): Unusual, but not so much in a good way - It’s a funky old downtown hotel, a several steps up from the sidewalk. A friendly clerk handles check in at the desk and explains that there is hotel bar, but only open on certain nights, and a coffee shop only open in the mornings. She finds the bellman, who then carries your bags up with cheerful solicitude. The main hotel is another half dozen steps up.
The lobby is small, with black couches and bad lighting. Neon signs decorate here and there, and a generous expanse of mirrors expand the sense of space. The floors are tile or planking with occasional rugs.
From the main floor, you go up in a “Lift” that has a door on hinges that opens on a steel cage that slowly travels up and down in a concrete shaft that you could reach out and touch as it slides past, if you were so foolish. The concrete is raw between floors, but painted red at each floor. I’m told the hotel was once a brothel.
The lights are garish, I can say that. None meant for reading. All dim and glaring at the same time. The halls are shadowy.
The room is dark with spots of illumination at key points. When the sun comes in the western windows, the light is good. There is a vintage half-couch that molds you into a laid-back posture almost like a hammock. Hm.
The television is easy to operate, unlike in most hotels. A tiny desk allows work at a laptop. There are plenty of electrical outlets.
The bathroom is black tile, gloomy, and there is no hot water.
The bed is big and comfortable, with adequate covers and good pillows.
Several good bars are just around the corner.
The esthetic seems to be artsy threadbare. Would I stay again? No.
- legendlcox (10/5): Cool Designed Rooms - This place has interesting room design and I loved the tile-work in the bathroom and old-style decorative incandescent lighting. The rooms are small but all I need is a bed and a bathroom so it's perfect for me.
- Derek (9/5): - room was cozy
- Anna (10/5): Great location, charming design, and helpful staff! - Really enjoyed my time at this hotel! I came to see a concert so the hotel’s location was perfect- just across the street from the Arena. The interior looked great with a touch of historical charm, and the stuff were really helpful and responsive! Overall, it was an easy, comfortable stay!
- 139allysong (2/5): Hotel Hell - As the song goes, “Where do I begin…?”
My husband and I just returned from a two-night stay at the Neptune Hotel in Providence. Don’t be misled by its 4-star rating—if anything, it’s 4 out of 100. The only positives were the location (downtown Providence) and the kindness of the staff. Many online reviews echoed what we experienced, but here is our firsthand account.
We were assigned room 410 the first night, Friday. The “closet” area was pitch-dark with no light—thankfully, I always travel with a flashlight. The low, squeaky bed was incredibly uncomfortable. The “rainfall” shower only trickled lukewarm water, and the black shower tiles were dangerously slippery—thankfully, I had flip-flops to wear in the shower to prevent a slip or fall. The bath towels were tiny and as rough as sandpaper. Amenities were nonexistent: no refrigerator, no microwave, no bottled water, no coffee, no snacks, no iron, no ironing board—nothing. The pedestal sink offered no space for toiletries. And every time the sink ran, the pipes emitted a loud, piercing noise that eventually stopped, but only after several minutes.
Friday night was barely manageable. The next night, Saturday, was not. Around 8:30 PM, the pipe-screeching returned—and this time it never stopped. No one could possibly sleep through that. With no in-room phone, my husband had to go down to the front desk around 9:30 PM to ask for help.
Only one alternative room was available—309—which they said was out of circulation due to “no hot water.” We agreed to take it anyway, just to get some sleep. Ironically, it did have hot water, but the bathroom light didn’t work. With black tile floors, black shower walls, and black paint on the lower walls, the entire bathroom was a literal black hole. Again, out came the flashlight.
But the worst surprise came overnight: the toilet flushed by itself, waking us up, and then continued running loudly for the rest of the night. By morning, the toilet wouldn’t flush at all—discovered only after I had used it. Now we had a toilet we couldn’t use.
We felt bad for the front desk staff—they were kind but clearly unequipped and unsupported. No manager was on duty Saturday night, and there was no maintenance person available to fix the screaming pipes or the dead bathroom light.
At checkout early Sunday morning, I politely suggested to the two very pleasant employees that they might consider finding other jobs; the hotel isn’t going to survive like this. They admitted that they hear these complaints regularly. Yet nothing changes.
So to the owners: please don’t respond with the usual on-line review responses, “This is not up to our standards, and we will address it,” when it’s obvious you haven’t—and won’t.
We were supposed to stay at the Neptune again in December for a wedding, but we’ve already canceled that reservation and booked the Graduate Hotel down the street instead. You couldn’t pay me to stay at the Neptune again.
- tombF8340OY (10/5): Friendly staff, beautiful interior, would stay again in a heartbeat - I only spent a few days at this hotel and I wish I had done longer. The front desk staff were so efficient and helpful, joked around and made me feel instantly welcomed - which is huge when solo travelling like me.
The lobby area has a great, relaxed vibe with a cafe and areas to work. The elevator is rustic and cool. My room was immaculate so props to the housekeeping team! There’s ample room to hang up clothes, a desk area, tv, comfortable bed, and an amazing black-tiled bathroom with a large walk in shower. The only negative I could think of is that the water pressure was quite intense and there was no way to adjust.
The WiFi wasn’t the best unfortunately, not sure if that’s just in my room or throughout the hotel.
Overall a fantastic stay, very much hoping to stay here again the next time I come to Providence.
- M7526YNmichellem (10/5): Great 3-day stay - Lovely little hotel! Beautiful and hip without being excessive. Absolutely no complaints. Would love to go back.
- kateO8174SU (6/5): Pretty hotel but could use some tweaks - This hotel has so much potential. Front desk staff was helpful enough. When we got to the room we were met instantly with a musty smell. I think it was coming from a shower curtain it appears they installed when they realized the shower was too small not to have a door (I don't know this for certain, but I'm just speculating because the curtain felt like an afterthought). The bed had no headboard, and the mattress was very squeaky and broken down. If there was a better bed and there wasn't the smell it would've been a perfect stay. Overall, the location is great. Parking was $126 for three days, so be prepared for that if you're driving in on top of your stay.
- Isha (6/5): nice location, but subpar quality of room - the decor was unique and the location was nice. the shower was nice the rooms were very small and very old. they also didnt feel very clean. it was also dark. this may have been the vibe of the hotel but not really my cup of tea
- Jan (10/5): -
- Phillip (10/5): -
- Janine (10/5): -
- A5853JEguest (8/5): great - Very nice hotel in great location - there were just mechanical issues with the shower that came up with our particular room.
- amandajquesada (8/5): Cute but not good bed - Great location, staff was friendly upon check-in w great recommendations (blond lady w glasses—super nice and knowledgeable). The bed was rickety though, and made a ton of noise. Small room which made it hard to get on the other side of the bed. Ok for one night.
- Eric (10/5): - Great vibe and friendly staff
- Coralie (7/5): Hôtel bien placé et bar très sympathique -
- SaraGchi (4/5): beware... There is a STRONG smell at this hotel! - This hotels uses a "signature scent" all over the hotel, hallways and rooms. When I say signature scent I mean disgusting and EXTREMELY strong mens cologne. It was so strong I could taste it in my mouth when I left the hotel and it was stuck to our clothes when we'd leave for the day. Beware if you have allergies or are sensitive to smells like I am.
- lisa (6/5): - Nice hotel for a quick stay .. no free parking $40 a night ..
- Anabel (10/5): - Very friendly staff. Clean rooms. The mall is very close by and a lot of restaurants walkable distance.
- David (10/5): Best place for reasonable money and great location. - The hotel in unique and interesting. The lift is definitely old school. The staff was phenomenal. The bar was great. Location can't be beat. Parking, Irish pub just two buildings down.
I highly recommend this property Mattress
- Rainer (9/5): -
- Linda (6/5): - Staff was fantastic. Rooms are very clean however very low lighting in the bedroom and bathroom. No mini fridge so take out we had to throw out. Great walking distance to restaurants and shops and activities. Not sure if I would stay there again because it is high priced and I thought the rooms would have more amenities in them.
- Geary (10/5): - Great spot!
- Kathleen (10/5): - Went to a show at the Strand and it was so convenient to park and walk to venue. Great property with its own speakeasy… lots of food options in walking distance.
- WalkaboutWarrior (2/5): Really not worth it - Really not worth it... Con is a month and half out and normally my wife and I would stay here. This year we are staying elsewhere. This is not to blast the former "Dean" hotel they are obviously doing a great job of that on their own. This is to protect travelers from RI parking tickets. Don't park in the lot next to the hotel. They will literally watch you park and give you a ticket as you check in. The Neptune/Dean or what ever they change the name to know this. I complained and management was supposed to fix it which they never did. So, if you want boxed water and really crap service stay at Neptune. You may get a nice $ 65.00 ticket as a bonus..
- viola (10/5): - This is such a cute place and no more expensive than any other hotel in the area. Absolutely would stay here again
- reuven (10/5): Unique ;) - Interesting caricature hotel. The stuff was very kind and helpful. Great bar and coffee
- Caylee (10/5): Love love love - The lady at the front desk was so nice and personable. She gave us free drink vouchers for our anniversary. The room was clean and we love the vibe. The speakeasy was a cool sexy laid back atmosphere. Will come again!
- Alexandre (6/5): - Funny smell in the room
Very poor soundproofing.. loud bar in the back of the hotel
- Antuanette (10/5): - Comfortable beds
- Wanderer01629681264 (10/5): Perfect location! - Staff were so welcoming and helpful. Room was small, but it's a boutique hotel, and the quirks make it charming.
- Janel (8/5): - Very unique property in a building built in 1912. Cool little rooms with original hard wood floors and fixtures. Unfortunately, the lighting is terrible, especially in the bathroom. The shower has been nicely upgraded, but with it so open, water gets everywhere when you leave the shower with wet feet unless you put towels on the floor everywhere. There is no place to put any of your stuff in the bathroom, which is inconvenient. The bed was low, but comfortable. Area was nice and walkable to bars and eateries.
- Ann (6/5): - This room smells absolutely disgusting. Like a public restroom. And the shower curtain is somehow stinkier. There is also a layer of dust all over the lights, molding, etc.
- Adam (10/5): - Loved the ambience! All team members were very friendly and helpful.
- Amanda (10/5): - Super pet friendly, staff was very helpful and friendly, and rooms were clean and cozy. The only downside was not having hot water in the showers (it wasn't freezing but definitely never got hot).
- lvasquez2025 (10/5): I wish all hotels were like this place! - I was traveling to Providence to drop my son off for college at RISD. It was a big life moment and transition for myself, but staying at the Dean was the best decision I made on the trip. While sleeping there, I actually forgot I was away from home and slept as though I was in my own home. That’s a first for me. The staff was fantastic and I can’t wait to come back out.
- Anna (6/5): - While the room was nicely appointed, there was not much in terms of hospitality.
- Roeland Olivier Langejan (8/5): netjes hotel, de naam was vroeger; The Dean, maar tegenwoordig The Neptune. -
- Shanelle (10/5): - The front desk staff was amazing and helpful! The free drinks were easily used in their coffee bar, and I still can’t get over how comfortable the bed was and how amazing the shower products smelled! I would absolutely stay here again if I visit Rhode Island in the future!
- Tracy (10/5): - The parking situation was confusing. U can park in lot beside the hotel but u must go itno lobby to click the qr code to get the 438 a night rate, If not it is over $200 tpo park in that lot overnight if you just use the kiosk at the lot.
- Kylie (3/5): We didn't like it. - Cool vibe due to being an old factory but seems like one of those places that used to be 'factory cool' and is now a bit run down. Location good for downtown dining. Has not rebranded so wasn't even sure I was at the right hotel. Understaffed, no receptionist to greet so you stand around waiting wondering if someone will come. Cafe in lobby but server was over an hour late and the receptionist said 'sorry he's running slightly late today' but an hour or more is not 'slightly'. Free WIFI but awful and couldn't really use. Tiny shower very difficult to use. No amenities. Parking in lot next door convenient but $39.00 for the night.
- adrianatzig (6/5): Comfy but lacking in customer service - Bed and shower are very comfy and the hotel is centrally located, but the rest is just standard. Small room without fridge or closet. We had a broken door handle to the bathroom that needed fixing. Unclear channels of communicating with the front desk. Some confusion about using gift certificate that seemed to get sorted. Overall ok but overpriced for what it is.
- Deirdre (10/5): - All & all worth its value! The staff was great & it reminded me of many NYC older hotels - older but well kept.
- Patrycja (10/5): - Haley at the front desk was very nice. Appreciated the late checkout and holding our luggage
Room was average. The bathroom fan and 1 of the bathroom lights were broken. Mattress was alright
The karaoke bar was extremely loud. It didn’t affect my room, but I heard other guests saying they could hear it in their room
Wish they had a vending machine with water or a water fountain. Felt pretty dehydrated when coming back late at night
- Anderson (4/5): - Tried to use the trick of blasting the AC to hide the unpleasant mildew and public bathroom smell in the room. Only 1 front desk attendant was truly pleasant/helpful others were very dismissive. Also, booking said free parking arrived to have to pay $38 a night. Would not recommend.
- Hoi Ning (10/5): - I always love staying here! It's conveniently located with lots of dining and shopping options nearby. Brown, RISD, museums, more dining, and more shopping are a short walk away, as well as the river and multiple bridges. Except for the coffee shop being unexpectedly closed one morning, the service and staff were great. I'd definitely come back for yet another stay! (P.S. There's definitely weekend noise, but I'm a night owl so I didn't mind too much, since it stopped before I went to bed.)
- Gary (10/5): - Rustic building
- Francine (10/5): Would recommend - Friendly helpful reception. Excellent room and really liked the decor of entire hotel. Nothing to complain about
- Jordanna (8/5): -
- 165bridgets (10/5): Great location, fun building - The Neptune (previously the Dean) was a nice overnight stay. The old fashioned elevator was fun and unusual. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom clean. We were using the room as home base for other activities, but if you were planning to spend down time in the room, it only had a small desk and chair and one low slung seat (which was comfy). The AC was out, but the staff had set up fans and the windows opened, so we still slept well. The coffee bar in the morning served a good brew. We didn't try the other bars, as we had plans. It was a good expirence overall.
- Joseph (8/5): Just right in providence - Unique boutique hotel. Quaint and perfectly located. Good for the price also
- Salena (6/5): - Bed was uncomfortable very dusty. The floor not clean the shower was so small you couldn’t turn around in it. The ladies at the front desk were amazing though very sweet great service
- Keith (10/5): Neptune Review - Front desk and service staff are amazing here. 100 out of 10. Recommend to everyone.
- Glenn (8/5): -
- Angel (8/5): - Really nice staff. Clean property and comfortable beds. Really great pet friendly hotel with an awesome bar.
- Cecilia (10/5): - Very nice and clean. Location is perfect to walk all downtown
- sammyjo_77 (8/5): Providence Cool - especially when it's fully up and running - This was a late booking (a week before) and wanted to be central. It was in the middle of a rebrand so was a little tricky to find as outside it says The Dean. Parking was in an adjacent city lot ($40 with hotel). Hotel is small with a cool vibe. The check in guy was helpful and helped us navigate the old fashioned lift. There is a lobby area with a coffee shop but this was only open for a couple of hours in the morning and just serves coffee. The bar was being refurbished and looked very cool. The place has a history and you definitely get a vibe! The room was a very pleasant surprise - modern, clean design with thought to the style. Great bathroom and shower. All in all an interesting discovery if you want to be downtown.

- Irwin (10/5): - Small hotel but safe and quiet.
- ibrahim (8/5): Très bien - une chambre confortable, idéal pour une courte période, et bien située au centre ville
- Ana (8/5): - The rooms were very small. No phone in the rooms and the coffee shop inside the hotel had a very limited menu.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Fun designed place, dark room - Fun building furnishings. Newly renovated bath, etc. The Desk staff were gracious and helpful.
Our room was very dark, the windows look to a brick wall and the indoor lighting was minimal. Had a small TV at far end of a 20ft room. We werent there to watch TV but still. No fridge in the room . I have VIP status = allotted a free drink yet they declined to tell us the bar was closed for renovation. We did get a nice coffee @ coffee bar there in the a.m.Central location, so overall a nice place, Just ask for a room facing the street, and bring a cooler if u need for drinks or snacks
- Joanne (6/5): - Small room, difficult elevator to open, few amenities, no mini bar, food or in room coffee, no cafe, parking is expensive, tiny bathroom & shower. Room decor was fine, bed comfy, bar was nice. The karoke place downstairs was loud and awful. Would not stay here again.
- Catherine (8/5): Tiny rooms in a cute hotel! - Cute hotel and SMALL but well designed rooms. For some reason the cute coffee bar was never open during our three night stay! Definitely not a room you would “hang out in” as the only seating was the bed and one small desk chair.
- Danielle (6/5): “Meh” - Started out annoying as my room wasn’t ready on time on a Monday afternoon. The front desk said they’d text me when the room was ready. 45 minutes later I checked back and they said the room was ready but the previous agent left for the day. Okay cool thanks for that. I had problems with the parking and got a ticket though the machines weren’t working. Front desk kid couldn’t care less. It’s small and gives more of a hostel vibe than a hotel. And why is the bed basically on the floor. Wouldn’t come back.
- Anne (10/5): - It was a unique place to stay and Haley at the front desk was amazing. So friendly and upbeat and went out of her way to help me with my luggage to room and made me feel very special and she cared .
- Marion (10/5): Comfy stay in Providence - The stay was very nice. The staff was friendly. It's in a nice area of town. My only complaint is that the name of the hotel in not on the front of the hotel making it difficult to find.
- Chung Hin Aaron (10/5): - Great location and nicely styled hotel with friendly staff
- PM (10/5): - Excellent staff.
Great vibe to the hotel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Fine for what you pay. - Inexpensive, not a bad location and definitely more hipster than the local Marriot. But now looking shopworn and the staff are consistently diffident.
- Michael (10/5): - The property is very cute and we enjoyed our stay. The area is great and there is plenty to walk to. The rooms do not have a coffee maker or refrigerator. There is ice available, but you have to call down to request it.
There is a coffee counter in the lobby area to buy coffee, but it’s only open Thu-Sun, so we had no coffee available since we weren’t there those mornings.
The bathroom is very small with little counter space, but it worked out okay for us. The shower is also very small and made it awkward to shower. The bed was fairly comfortable, but the couch is stiff.
We enjoyed both bars (there is a ‘speakeasy’ and a karaoke bar called Boombox). We wish they were open more nights. Bartenders at both bars were terrific. Friendly and full of recommendations.
The hotel staff was all wonderful, helpful, and kind.
- silverower (10/5): delightfully unique - From reception to checkout, we had a wonderful experience. Loved the vintage elevator! The room was quiet, clean and comfortable and the hotel staff were delightful. Parking was simple in the lot next door and everything was close by and easily walkable.
- Daniel (8/5): - It's an elective place, quirky, and why we selected it. I wish it had a few more amenities like readily available coffee and food bites. Other than that I enjoyed it and would recommend if you want to experience something other than the common hotel offerings
- Charlotte (6/5): - Very nice hotel room in a great location - plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes nearby - the hotel staff we encountered were very nice and welcoming. Unfortunately we couldn't find a water cooler and the hotel cafe hours were not clear. The hotel has a single very small old fashioned lift (only fits 2 adults + luggage) that at times made some questionable noises and it took us 3 tries to get from Level 3 of 4 when checking out (stairs not an option with our luggage). The Boom Box Kareoke bar was fun, but would have been very noisy on lower levels at that end of the hotel! The walls were pretty thin and we were woken up at early hours by some inconsiderate, noisy guests returning to their rooms - bring your earplugs! The hotel car park is convenient but costs USD 40 a night.
