Guest Reviews
- Yashanpal (10/5): - Overall, awesome place. Only thing is they offer free coffee/milo/tea etc but no milk
- Kelly (10/5): - So clean, comfortable.
Staff super friendly
Location is amazing
- Anna (10/5): - Owner is so lovely and accommodating, the staff are so friendly. Venue is safe and warm and is located right across the beach, always a stunning sunset.
- Jane (10/5): - Nice bathroom
- Stewart (10/5): - Close to the ocean love it
- Hoang (10/5): - My first option when coming back to Wellington ;)
- Crystal (8/5): - .
- Maemae (10/5): - I loved the outside dining area and the inside dining area. Everything is within walking distance.
- Young-Su (8/5): - Nice ocean view and kind reception
- Deborah (10/5): - We loved our stay. Very friendly welcome on arrival. Moana Lodge is well looked after and bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, dining area and lounge are all super clean/tidy ..... feels a bit like home. Our family room looked straight across to the beach/ocean, amazing view. We were lulled to sleep by the faint sound of the waves. Excellent value for money. Cooking was a breeze with gas hobs, lots of good pots, wooden spoons, airfrier and sharp knives - a very organised kitchen with ample space to store your own food. Little cute village just down the road, with train station close by. Hustling Porurua 5 minutes away by car and an easy 25 minute drive into Wellington city. We loved our stay and will only stay here now when we visit Wellington. It is a real gem.
- Annette (10/5): - Great view in the rooms- sleeping and common room. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Tidy and clean-
I enjoyed the beach on the other side of the road and the view on the waterfront- l highly recommend this hostel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - nice lodge excellent location for he summer break and during the cold season.. one thing tho need one more bathroom facility..than the two thy had..otherwise i had awesome stay..
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not going back there. - The place is worn down and half of the place is rented out to the government to be used as a place for social cases. A woman was assaulted while I was staying there and the police came and took report. There were old bottles and dirt under my bed and some of the residents made med feel unsecure. I'm not going back.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Got bite by something which got me ill and with an infection. Staff wasn’t amazing were ok.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely room with clean bathroom. Excellent location by the beach. Awesome welcoming reception!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Well located with beautiful beach view but not impressed by fellow guests.
- Natalie (6/5): Comfortable but loud - Comfortable hostel with a nice lounge but there were some regular residents who treated it like home and were very loud, which was a shame.
- Maggie (8/5): - Clean and comfortable with great view.of the sea front. Good sized room and comforta ble beds.
- Theo (8/5): Nice to hear the waves - We only where there for 8 hours but it was nice an warm on a cold night. Nice hot showers and would go back there when we go back to Wellington.
- kiwigal (8/5): Charming lodge - We were on a late sailing from Picton and were accomodated very well with our late arrival. Pity about the lack of off road parking but unrealistic to expect anything else. We had to leave early so were unable to experience much of this lodge but what we did was charming.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Was ok an old place but still survable at least had a heater in the room and an electric blanket which was good ok
- Manu (8/5): For the price awesome - Friendly staff, good room, good lounge and kitchen
- Helen & Ken (8/5): Quite & Clean Backpackers - Staff very helpful. Kitchen excellent, Rooms small but clean, comfortable & quite. A very well run Backpackers.
- Brian (10/5): Awesome hostel. - Really great hostel on the seafront. Super friendly staff, great kitchen, lots of space to eat and chill out, clean and comfy rooms. This is a hostel deserving of its excellent ratings. Safe for all travellers of all ages. WiFi was solid as well.
There's some excellent places nearby to grab food and supplies...I especially enjoyed some top notch fish & chips from the local shop while watching the sun go down.
This is also an excellent alternative to staying in Wellington: it's much cheaper, quieter and yet easy to make it into the city on the frequent train service. A day ticket was only $14...I imagine you could easily spend that on petrol and parking. And a lot less hassle....you can enjoy a beer and not have to worry about driving.
- Verified traveler (8/5): excellent location and bedding - really lovely place and quiet. the only thing I would change is a couple of more toilets and showers would help due to the number of people staying at the hostel. when one of the toilets got blocked it made the morning rush a little too much
- Carolyn (8/5): Another good stay - I was arriving after Reception was closed, I got a call to confirm I was OK and to advise where to find my key. When I got the the Lodge, key was where I had been told along with a letter welcoming me and giving a variety of instructions. All was good from my point of view :-)
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice hostel - Lovely setting, next to the beach. Convenient drive to Wellington. Good choice of cafes nearby.
- Robyn (10/5): Meet Plimmerton - Moana Lodge, fantastic lodgings, sea view over the beach & harbour from our room.
Top class service from staff and owner. Very clean facilities, kitchen fantastically kitted out. 5 Star backpackers. Will come back to Moana lodge again.
Thanks
- Peter (10/5): The best BB close to wellington - Very Good What ealse do you want me to say so this review will go in its way?????????????????????
- Shane (10/5): Amazing - Awesome place to stay. On the waterfront with amazing views. Would definitely recommend to everyone
- Mark (10/5): Spacious Room with a View! - Had a great stay at Moana! Room looked out right over the beach! Comfy beds and great bathroom and kitchen facilities. Friendly staff!
- Tamsyn (10/5): A+ - Top marks for Moana lodge! Scenic, peaceful, friendly and non-intrusive. Well worth the extra money compared with the inner city hostels.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Still close to ferry terminal - I was looking for hostel in welly because I woukd take a ferry to Picton with my car next day. So I preferred free parking and hi rated hostel but I couldn't find it in centre of welly. I found this nice hostel. here's just 30 minutes drive to Ferry terminal. Don't need to drive crowded road(like a CBD). Nice building. Clean and well equipped kitchen. Just front of the sea. If you looking for hostel around welly and don't need night club, must stay here.
- Rob (8/5): Convenient, cheap, close to the beach. - I had three days here while arranging a household transfer. It was pleasant and convenient and easy to fit into the ambience with the other guests.
- Tracy (10/5): Welcoming and really lovely - We had a fabulous stay at Moana Lodge. We arrived late after hours and everything was waiting for us. The lodge is really well appointed and our room was amazing with a sea view, lamps turned on for our late arrival, electric blankets and nice linen and furnishings. The communal areas are amazing.
The lodge was close to the Royal New Zealand Police College and the off street parking seemed very safe.
I would highly reccommend the Moana Lodge to any other travellers.

- Saeed (10/5): Pleasantly surprised - I did not realise that I had booked a backpacker motel. When I arrived I realised what it was, and was wondering what it would be like. When I went into the room I found it very clean...when I went to the shower it was very clean...the toilets were a;also very clean. Thank you.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Affordable lodge - Very welcoming and pleasant. Will be using this accomodation again. Lovely people and staff, close to beach/bay and shop close by. 4.5/5 rating.
- Andrew (10/5): A hostel that feels like a hotel - Despite being a hostel this place was fantastic! The owner was very friendly and welcoming, room was very clean and it was right on the water! Great view from the room. Fully functioning kitchen, ammenities, dining area and living area. Basically a big house that's been transformed into a hostel. Reasonably close to the train station to get into the city. As someone that does not normally stay in hostels I was pleasantly suprised how well Moana lodge was. Would stay here again if in Wellington.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely location on the beach front - Nice place to stay friendly staff value for money comfortable rooms
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect spot for a coastal getaway - I arrived in need of a couple of days solitude by the sea as you do. The outside of the lodge looked much as it did online, but you never know quite what a place is going to be like till you step inside. Everything is clean, tidy and well looked after. It's the little touches - shower gel in the shower, a nice cushion on the bed, clean white sheets, flowers in the dining room. I had a sunny, single room with a sea view, a perfect spot to read a book from the shelf downstairs and watch the sunset over Mana Island. The host was super responsive, friendly, and helpful, but I also felt quite comfortable just being there doing my thing. I would totally go back for the same experience, except maybe book the sunny double room next time!
- Karen K (10/5): Exceptional! - We loved staying here! Room # 9 has a fabulous ocean view through windows meeting at the corner (exactly as pictured)! The shared facilities were very clean with small considerate touches (body wash, hooks for clothes & towels). We were also very impressed with the amenities provided in the fully equipped kitchen, dining-room and lounge. And the free unlimited wi-fi was great.
- Summervilles (8/5): Very good backpackers - Top place, even for a family of 4. Comfy beds, clean, great setup. So relaxing in lounge with G&Ts, nibblies, books and watching the sun set. Also, an excellent meal and evening at the sailing club.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely location and atmosphere, - Clean well equipped hostel, would definitely stay there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent, had the family room for 4 of us. Lovely sea view and very comfortable. Lovely host.
- Verified traveler (8/5): quiet location on the beach with facilities close - fantastic stay; friendly and helpful staff. Lovely location
- Lau&Andy (10/5): A great hostel in an awesome location - Hostel is located right in the beach in a lovely quiet area (more suited to those with a car). Hostel is well run, spacious and organised.
Good value for money with free unlimited wifi, comfortable room and decent shower rooms & toilets.
- wayne (10/5): - clean friendly and exactly what was advertised
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing backpackers-style lodge in an outstanding location. Very friendly and cosy/
- Margaret (10/5): Fantastic feel-at-home by the seaside lodge - We stayed two nights. Our accommodation needs were met as requested. We loved the friendly ambience and being able to mix with other guests. The proximity to the beach was great and being able to enjoy the setting sun over the water from the comfort of the lounge. There was a family-like atmosphere that allowed people to keep their privacy and yet enjoy company if they so wished.
I have already highly recommended it to several although for less active people having their own transport is a definite advantage.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not bad - Too small room for 2 adults and one kid. After visiting lodge I felt the price I paid was bit high
- Lin (10/5): Nice lodge situated on a gorgeous spot - Moana Lodge is a very clean and super friendly lodge to stay. Most of all it is situated so beautiful overlooking the water and so close to Wellington too while you don`t even have the feeling being so close to a big city. The Lodge has an incredible friendly and warm feeling and it always a pleasure to stay there
- Ingrid (8/5): - A wonderful alternative to staying right in Wellington. The hotel is clean and has everything one needs to make a meal and enjoy the seaside. Great location.
- crystal (10/5): Beautiful view and cozy Front Room - I wasn't sure what to expect, because it's a hostel. You don't get your own bathroom, but they are clean and well kept. Also, if you have mobility issues, this might not be for you, since there are steep stairs to the rooms. If you're looking for a quiet place outside of the Wellington bubble, this may be a good spot. It has an beautiful front room that overlooks the harbor. I sat there several times with a cup of tea for hours. I ended up having interesting conversations with other guests that I never would have gotten in a regular hotel. The attached photo is the view from the front room, thus the Christmas tree. Some of the rooms are view facing, but ours was view... adjacent. With the downstairs, it didn't matter.
- Silvia (10/5): - Very reasonable price and amazing views of the beach right across the road. It was clean, had a comfy bed and was perfect for us stopping a night while visiting friends in the area.
