Guest Reviews
- Edwin Irwanto (9/5): -
- Irene (10/5): - Tutto, posto meraviglioso. Personale eccelso.
- Mahri (7/5): Very pleasant. - The service, the onsen was great (especially the rotenburo), the meals. I wanted my husband to get the full ryokan experience, so that was fulfilled! The staff were amazing - thank you! It’s a great way to experience nostalgic Japan with a traditional ryokan experience (dinner in room, futon turn down service, breakfast in the grand room). Very memorable. The layout of the room was a bit odd (with the sink so far from the bathroom). I was expecting a more lavish manicured Japanese garden — due to past reviews. Check out was a bit early.
- Tiffany (8/5): - I like how attentive the staff was and clean they try to keep it at all times. It was really far from the station and have no shuttle to the onsen.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Franco (6/5): Quaint and authentic but a bit remote. - The staff were very helpful and breakfast was traditional.
The tatami rooms were great and authentic rooms. The property was old but cared for.
The property was a bit out of town with limited transportation.
The garden needed some care.
- Evelin (10/5): Amazing ryokan and onsen experience with a kaiseki dinner and breakfast. Extremely kind staff! - The staff were extremely kind, the dinner and breakfast were incredible. We visited on a Thursday and we were the only ones in the onsen, which was amazing for our first onsen experience. There is a cute japanese garden in front. It is easy to get to the train stop from Osaka where a driver was waiting for us and also drove us back the next morning.
- Jana (9/5): Superb - nice staff, nice onsen, nice keiseki Ryōri kitchen, good shuttle bus service all was good
- Soyoun (8/5): Very good -
- Margarethe (10/5): Exceptional -
- José (9/5): A real place of comfort and peace. - The nature around, the Onsen, the traditional dishes & the kindness of the employees. Nothing
- Emmanuel (9/5): A traditional ryokan not far from Kansai airport - Traditional Ryokan, good meals
Karaoke is fun
Pick up from nearby railway station
- Terry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kim (10/5): Relaxing time in the public bath and in a traditional accommodations - Secluded in nature wonderful place to relax Very isolated from once you get there it isn’t very easy to leave unless you have a car
- Arno (7/5): Nostalgic Hotel with Onsen - (+) Spacious and clean room with nice view into nature, large windows with a lot of natural light, authentic breakfast included, shuttle service from the nearby train station. A traditional Yukata was provided for the stay/Onsen.
(-) Staff does not speak English well (only one person), Onsen had strong chlorine smell and was rather decayed (with it seems some moisture on the roof and water did not look really clean, pool coating partly coming off).
Note: Onsen is gender separated
- Ellie (10/5): Exceptional - The little garden is really beautiful. Staff are very nice and helpful.
- Greg (9/5): A fantastic traditional Onsen which treated Australian vistors marvellously well. - The Onsen is a traditional Japanese Onsen - a great treat for we visiting Australians. We stayed one night as a last night treat, exiting Japan via KIX.
The location is in near countryside however the local train and Hotel pickup/dropoff service worked very well for both pickup and dropoff. The local train runs quite frequently and connects to a station with access to the Airport Express for getting to KIX. Getting to/from the Onsen was far easier and trouble-free than we imagined (SUICA worked on the local train).
The optional/extra dinner was lavish and traditional Japanese "in the room". It was expensive but an exotic experience and learning experience as well as great food.
We had a great experience. The staff were very helpful, one of them could speak English. There wasn't anything to not like.
- Curtis (10/5): Amazing - This place was great workers were all incredibly helpful and super nice and patient they drove us back down to the nearest station after. Food was great and the hot springs were super nice and relaxing.
- Thanh (9/5): Superb -
- Julia (8/5): Very good - Beautiful onson, very traditional looking place, lovely staff
- Fares (9/5): Lovely and distant - So the place is between the hills or mountains which is pretty already. I went in winter in Jan and it was so cold. leaving the station you need to get a taxi from Didi or their Japanese taxi app Uber doesn't work in that area since there are none.
The lobby and staff were welcoming and I enjoyed my time with my friend there. the room was big enough with 2 bathrooms one where the toilet is and the other for the shower. The shower was kinda cold but the rest of the room was warm. The food was delicious since the dinner was brought to our room and the breakfast was in the dining room. My experience is good for relaxing and spending time with your loved ones away from the cities. Had trouble finding a taxi using Uber even tho there was a Taxi agency number in front of the station, we called and they closed immediately after I said Hello.
The bathroom was cold from the weather outside and wasn't warm like the rest of the room. Using hot water in the tub will make the bathroom warmer.

- Triet (10/5): Recommended stay - We arrived late in the evening and were unable to enjoy the surroundings of Okumizuma Onsen. Still, we were able to notice that Okumizuma Onsen is a very beautiful, high-quality ryokan-onsen type inn. Okumizuma Onsen is located right in nature in the middle of the hills. The very spacious common lounge with two massage chairs and drinks dispensers overlooks the well-kept and beautiful garden. Okumizuma Onsen has double indoor and outdoor (covered) onsens: don't miss this last !
Room is spacious, clean and comfortable, and the staff is just lovely.
As Okumizuma Onsen is located in a fairly remote location, it is not easy to find a restaurant nearby especially at night time: don't hesitate to book meals at Okumizuma Onsen, especially the traditional kaiseki type dinner which is worth trying.
Our regret: too short 1-night stay !
- Julien (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chanchai (9/5): Excellent traditional ryokan. - The ryokan is in the middle of the mountain. There are shuttles for commuting to and from KIX but car is the best way to get there. The shared onsen is beautiful, with creek and mountain view. The room is traditional Japanese but with en suite bathroom and toilet. Foods are traditional Japanese style, which is basically rice with some raw fish, pickled vegetables, nuts, soup, etc. You should eat at the hotel, or you have to drive somewhere to eat.
- Paul (10/5): Perfect in every way - Sooo relaxing
- David (10/5): It was very good 👍 and people where very kind and helpful and great -
- Katrin (10/5): Great location, great staff, great Onsen, great food - A wonderful traditional hotel with such friendly staff and high level of service. Great onsen, great location, best Japanese food. Absolute recommendation 💕 -
- Angelika (8/5): Very good - Very good and interesting experience! The hotel seems a bit old school/retro - like many things in Japan it was likely built during the boom era before 1990. It seems to be family owned and managed. Well kept and clean, an establishment with high standards. I believe not a lot of westerners come here. There are many day guests from Osaka - I think if you have a car this is a good alternative. The food offered was traditional and (I think) good quality with several dishes of course new to my taste. The dinner menu is served in the room which I enjoyed. The staff was very polite and explained the menu and etiquette to me. If you arrive by public transport (train), the staff will offer you to pick you up at the train station if you arrive at a convenient time (around 14:30). Otherwise they told me there would be taxis available. The onsen had an indoor and an outdoor area. The outdoor area is small and can become full so you better come on weekdays. The outdoor pool was closed during my stay (mid of October).
Be polite and show a respect for/interest in the etiquette in any case. I definitely felt welcomed. Note that if you arrive by public transport that there are not really any options to dine out available close in the area. So you should either bring food or book the breakfast and dinner menu options offered on site. They are a very good experience but have their price and need to be factored in budget wise.
Further, note that coming from Europe I expected some kind of spa/relaxing area with daybeds but there is none, only the wet rooms/onsen itself. My room was a Japanese room which also does not really have any daytime relaxation space (only the traditional night bed on the floor). This seems to be traditional and just a good thing to know beforehand.
- Sarah (7/5): Good -
- Elise (9/5): Superb -
- Xiaofeng (8/5): Very good -
- Yves (10/5): Very relaxing and high quality stay. - Excellent food. We could feel the purifying effect of the thermal water on our body, we had excellent sleep and much more physical energy afterwards. Very relaxing. The staff was very friendly and did their best to accommodate the needs of our child. One minor aspect: would have loved to be able to walk a bit in the neighbourhood. As it is located in the middle of forest/mountain there are not many paths to walk around.
- Cho (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ostrogórska (10/5): Exceptional - If you want to go back in time and see Japan as it used to be, you absolutely must visit this hotel. Beautiful old Japanese hotel with wonderful onsen and the best food which we eat in Japan. Also vegan food was wonderful, I wouldn't have thought that he would prepare such wonderful Japanese food for me. Beautiful place to take a rest after sightseeing big cities.
- Terezinha (10/5): Our family's nature fix outside of busy Osaka - The hot springs were rejuvenating, the food outstanding and prepared with so much care, and the staff were all so friendly and accommodating. The Onsen is off the main transportation route, so make sure you arrange for a shuttle/taxi from the end of the rail line. The resort itself is a little dated, but our room was a spacious traditional Ryokan, which our two boys (ages 12 and 9) loved. I don't think they get too many international guests, since very little was translated to English and the staff used Google Translate to communicate, which worked fine. We also appreciated how empty the resort was during the week at the end of June (it meant we were brave enough to use the hot springs, Lol). It was too much of a trek to go back to Osaka from the onsen, so we decided to relax and hike in the beautiful nature. Thank you for the amazing memories! We loved everything.
- Francis (9/5): Superb -
- Elena (9/5): Superb -
- Kirsty (9/5): Wonderful relaxing time- fireflies and friendliness - Fireflies and friendly staff Everything was great
- Pedro (10/5): Exceptional -
- Timofey (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place!!! One of the best hotels I ever stayed in in my life!! The vibe, attitude, traditions and cuisine absolutely fantastic!!! I will recommend it to anyone!!!
- Yu (8/5): Very good -
- Lian (6/5): Disappointed with the meals - Traditional building and quiet Meals very common like you can get any small eating place, not innovative like some other onsen hotel we visited elsewhere in Japan.
- Chee (10/5): Exceptional - Not much review on booking.com for this property , but really nice ! You guys must have a try ! Really appreciated !
- Melissa (8/5): Our peaceful and delicious stay here was a highlight of our visit to Japan. - The baths were wonderful – making us feel clean, relaxed, and soft. The futon bedding was very comfortable, and the food was delicious. Our daughter enjoyed the children's meals, too! Our family room felt traditional, and we could hear the water rushing in the river as we fell asleep! We enjoyed walking along the nearby creekside trail. The ryokan shuttle picked is up and returned us to the local train station. The decor in the main lobby and our room's bathrooms was dated (1980s), although it was all very clean and super functional.
- Chou (7/5): A relaxing, remote onsen with no-frills. - The staff was very nice; one spoke Mandarin, which greatly helped us with the language barrier since my father is from Taiwan. The rooms were spacious and the onsens were very clean and had a beautiful view of the outdoors. The location is a bit remote, but I think that is the purpose, to get away from the city and relax, so it was okay for me. The dinner service was a bit difficult, but this was due to the language barrier, they were very attentive and did the best they could to accommodate us during dinner.
- Harry (10/5): A wonderful, relaxing experience of Japanese culture and comfort. - The staff was kind and attentive, they immediately made us feel at home. It felt very luxurious, we wish we could have stayed a long time. The onsen was perfect, especially the indoor and outdoor hot baths. The food was good. The staff drove us to the bus station promptly at check out, which was so helpful!Okumizuma Onsen was perfect, and we hope to return! I have nothing I did not like.
- Frances (10/5): perfect ‘real Japan’ experience - such a Beautiful traditional Japanese experience. amazing location with very zen and unique inside and outside Onson. the photos don’t do it justice.
the food was delicious and very high end.
the staff were so lovely too and did everything possible to make our stay very memorable.
we stayed 2 nights.
the dinners were very different each night. we were 2 adults, 2 children- 6&8- and the food for the kids was different- more kid friendly- and perfect.
we had a lazy day in the middle day, used the onson several times, walked up to a forest path, did jigsaws etc. watched the river go past- saw a Great Egret from the hotel room!! . fed the fish- just chilled.
it’s an amazing contrast to the cities - exactly what we were looking for.
we got the trains from Kyoto to there. it took a few hours but was fine. there was a shuttle bus back to the local train’s station the morning we left.
book here to experience real Japan!! nothing.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- AK (8/5): - a very nice place with greenery environment and a very traditional Japanese hot spring style hotel. just no bathroom inside guest room. anyway. the staff or even the owner are very nice and hospitality as i come very late for check in. feel very sorry for this
- R (10/5): time of relaxation - was excellent stay over this place - very comfortable - so good that we extended one more day... will be in our plans for next vacation.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Monne (10/5): - The hotel is great however no restaurant and shops. This is good for relax.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- FANG (10/5): Unique and nice hotel - Staffs were very friendly and considerable. Breakfast was truly Japanese style and delicious. Will visit again!
- CHOR MING (10/5): -
- PrinterBird (10/5): Beautiful Retreat - We visited Okmizuma Onsen on the last night of our trip as a way to relax before heading home. The rooms are traditional and beautiful and the garden surrounding the ryokan is lovely. We loved hearing the rushing water from the creek outside of our window as we drifted off to sleep and very much enjoyed our beautiful dinner in our room and the lovely staff did their best to explain to us how to eat some of the more unusual items. Its worth paying the extra money for the meal - its a very special experience. The baths are relaxing and well-maintained with both an indoor section and an outdoor section with views of the forest and creek. You'll definitely come away feeling relaxed! A few of the staff speak a little bit of english and will do their very best to communicate and make you feel welcome but its mostly Japanese so don't book here if you are english-speaking and can't deal with that. Some of the guests even came over to help us in the morning with our food! You can call ahead to book the dinner and arrange a ride from the train station - there's a number for a translation service that will be provided for you or a short taxi ride from the station works as well. Just a note: they do allow smoking in the lobby and though its vented and doesn't reach the rooms, you can smell the smoke a bit in that area.
- Joe W. (10/5): The best hotel experience ever - This is the best hotel experience ever. My daughter loves it very much. It's beautiful and the staff is really nice. We felt we are at home surrounded by our family members. We'll definitely come back!!
- Jade (10/5): Beautiful traditional Japanese onsen experiences ! - From arrival to exit staff was so friendly and helpful. Dispite the language barrier staff was patient and understanding with westerners visiting Japan for first time. Hot bath is relaxing, and breakfast is delicious. As a tip for those not familiar with Japan do some (or lots) research on Japanese culture and day to day living and customs. Also get familiar with train lines in area, as the onsen is out of the way (which only increases its appeal to me).
